Roxanne Shante

Roxanne Shante (aka Lolita Shante Gooden) is widely recognized as the first female hip hop artist to break through the male dominated industry. The rapper recently spoke to blackvoices.com and shared some insight on her very real life battle with breast cancer … in her own words:

In March, I noticed a lump in my left breast, rather small at the time and didn’t really know what I was feeling. So instead of going straight to the doctor’s office, I started asking friends their opinion and trying to go by their experiences. It was such a stupid move. Well, I figured I was just getting older. A hysterectomy in my early thirties led me to believe that I would be fine. Another stupid move.

I let months go by – five months to be exact. The weight loss of over 40 pounds made me feel like, “Damn, this diet is finally working.” But then I remembered I wasn’t on a diet. So on a bright, sunny day in August 2009, I walked into Doshi center for a mammogram. I put on the gown and stepped up to the machine. As soon as the technician took my breast in her hand, she asked me how long had I had the lump. It’s huge, she said. I made a joke, she giggled, but I was scared and angry that I had waited so long.

I was in denial. I even went so far as to ignore the letters sent by the lab that read: “Urgent!!! Please contact us.”

I had gotten a call from the doctor, “I just received your images at my office and they have been trying to reach you for weeks. As soon as you get back to New York, you come to my office. This is your life.”

I hung up, turned the phone off, walked out on the set and tried to pretend that the call never happen. But they did. And it showed on my face.

The doctors was a different story, however.

VIDEO: Feel Up Your Boobies With Me

This is how the week went. Headlines: ‘No Ph.D. Roxanne’s Revenge,’ ‘Where are you Roxanne?’

It was the ’80s all over again, but this time not to spark a career but to end over 10 years of charities, pushing education and giving and helping people and not too mention 25 years of hip-hop. But that’s nothing new. What about my children ? My 13-yea-old ? What if I die? So Tuesday another mamo, Wednesday ultrasound Thursday the bad news and then the surgery.

So I felt all eyes were on me to tell women how important it is for them to get checked. It is only by the grace of God that I have been able to survive. I have been blessed to not only have survived the pitfalls of an industry that has destroyed so many, but to also survive just the everyday struggles of surviving all the negative that has come my way

I pray that she recovers fully. I lost my mom in 07 to cancer. It started as breast cancer then moved to her brain. Whats even more sad is mom kept it a secret because she did not want anyone to make a fuss about her seeing a doctor or feel sorry for her. I miss my mom so much!!

I would HOPE no one would lie about something of this nature but who knows *shrugs*. If true, I pray for her continued strength and improvement of health through this illness. My mom battled cancer and BEAT it…10+ years of remission (Praise God). I have also had a Cancer “scare” but thank God it was nothing. However, knowing this is hereditary (my Grandmother had breast cancer) I have to make my health a major priority.

Hey Roxanne. I grew up listening to you. Funny how you listen to different music from different celebs and when something happens to them, be it good or bad, you kind of feel what they are going through Right now I feel very sad for you but I also know that God has a plan for all of us and you will survive this ugly cancer. My sister is now 47 yrs old and she is a cancer survivor. She is just three yrs older than me. She was diagnosed with cancer in her late 30″s. My mom passed away from cancer in her 30′s. I was only 17yrs old. God has kept my sister due to there being a lot of new and improved medicines. My mother ignored a lot her pains and it went too far. Please take care of yourself. Listen to your body. I am 43 yrs old and have type 2 diabetes. I went through so much pain emotionally not wanting to except the fact that I have this disease and that this is what I have to live with. I was in a coma for about a day and to this day I always think to myself. God must have a plan for me. He brought me through. I am living through his grace and mercy.

Roxanne. Please keep your head up. I love you and know that you will be a survivor just like my sister.

    Peace

As a breast cancer survivor, I feel for Ms. Shante. Going through this is not a joke and I encourage ALL women to check your breasts monthly.

Ms. Shante, if this is a ploy for attention, you are hurting the millions of women who really do have breast cancer. If it is true, I pray for your full recovery. If it’s not true, shame on you!

Hello pretty and how are you doing today? Anyway I only called to say happy new month !!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Baby-Baby/ Baby-Baby

Shante, you see what happens when you cry wolf. No one knows whether to believe you or not. I believe you. This cancer (breast, lung or any other kind is no joke). My mother had a breast removed when I was in high school. I was up at that hospital everyday before and after school. My sister is a 10 year survivor only to have the breast cancer return. She is now a 2 time survivor (1 year and counting) I have another sister that passed 5 years ago (Lung cancer). Keep the faith and things will work out. Tell your 13 year old daugther to keep prayer first that mom will be alright. When prayers go up blessings come down. Stop the lying…Things are going to be alright.

Shante, As a breast cancer survivor. I did the same thing. i know it was there, and i ask everyone.. but the doctors. and when it started to hurt, under my arm , then i went to the doctor. and yes it was to late to save my right breast. but it not to late for me to let every female know go to the doctors and ask them, right away don’t wait. It might not be anything but at least you have a chance of keeping your breast, with out reconstructive surgery, and your life. It only took one year for this to happen. i got my yearly and the next year i was off a couple of months and feeling the lump. it only took 14 months PLEASE GO THO THE DOCTOR…notice your breast hurt in the same area when you drink alcohol go see the doctor.(that go for anywhere on you body). BE BLESSED AND I WILL KEEP YOU IN MY PRAYERS

I hope she is not lying again. We might need to see some proof from the doctor because she is just not always believable.

Wow that is crazy, and they say men are afraid to go to the Dr. I pray for her and call her healed. That breast cancer aint no joke for Black women (higher rate of non survival compared to Whites). I had a aunt die from it in her early 50′s, back in the early 80′s.

God bless her! I will keep her in my prayers! This is one of hiphops female pioneers! One of the first rappers ever ! I saw her recently at the Jacob Javits Center “Circle of Sisters” and she stepped on stage and performed along with Kane,Master Ace, a bunch of hip hop legends! She has accomplished alot, rap career, college educated(I know there were some issues surrounding her degrees) and other things! I wish her a speedy recovery! I have had family members ,fight breast cancer, some at young age. My mom goes to Doshi for her mammograms also, and she had a scare one time, but thank God it turned out to just be non cancerous cyst , that were drained!

aint she the one who lied about the phd… umm id hate to believe she is lying about breast cancer too though

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ShaQuana-Tasha/ ShaQuana-Tasha

I totally agree with some of the previous post. She is obviously a habitual liar. I would hope she wouldn’t lie about having breast cancer but who knows. She lied about being a doctor for years. Im not trying to be cold hearted but it just seems very convient that she has breast cancer after it came out that she wasn’t a doctor. That would be a great ploy to distract people from the fact that she lied about her PHD
