Rihanna’s new song “Russian Roulette” is sparking a lot of controversy. Singer Tiffany Evans boldly expressed her opinion on the track via Twitter, claiming that the lyrics would cause the “suicide rate to skyrocket,” and implying that most provocative artists are devil-worshippers.

Read Evans rant here.

Chuck Harmony (the producer of the record) and Ne-Yo (who wrote the lyrics) have stepped up and fired back in defense of the track:

Harmony says,

“There are no satanic messages in the music. Maybe if we did a remake of ‘Promise Ring’ (Tiffany’s hit single), then Rihanna wouldn’t be a devil worshipper. People are so closed minded. The song is not literal. Like most provocative art, its symbolism. Grow up. I’m never going to defend my art. I create it and then it’s out of my hands. So reviews don’t hurt me, but Tiffany’s unrealistic take on the song really urked me because idiots breed idiots. Bottom line, she is in the music business so she understands that the song is not indicative of the artist views, but rather, it’s the brainchild and vision of the songwriter and producer. With that being said, to use that song as a shining example of devil worship in the music business, you are saying that Ne-yo and Chuck Harmony are devil worshippers. Thats stupid!! That’s beyond stupid it’s immature. Artist should understand art. So with Tiffany Evans rant, I can safely say that the title artist should not be part of her bio.”

Hear the song here.

Ne-Yo explained to MTV News the use of Russian Roulette as a metaphor:

“I’m listening to the track, and all I can see is Rihanna and some random person sitting across from each other at the table with a gun sitting in the middle of the table and playing Russian roulette. And I just started thinking, ‘What would go through your mind if you was in that situation?’ It just all started coming together, and Rihanna has never been one to be afraid to take a chance, especially with me. She’s always game to do something a little different. I played it for her, and she loved it – went in and knocked it out. The rest is history. It’s definitely dark, but if you think about it, ‘Thriller’ was dark, but it’s one of the biggest-selling records of all time. Nobody’s really going out to play Russian roulette or thinking about killing themselves or nothing like that. It was just an interesting topic over a crazy beat, and who better to pull that off than somebody like Rihanna?”

What do YOU think of the song?

okay Ne-Yo, but I’m not convinced.

I work with a lot of mentally unstable people who are trying to find their way back from it and it really should be pulled. Rhi just came out of a very dark situation herself and I can’t really put two and two together right now except for the fact that is a terrible first comeback title and song. Not a god one this time Neo. suicide? That is a very sensitive subject to sing about in a dark fashion to a society in as much trouble as ours is today. It kinda makes fun about people who have actually done it or might be thinking about it. Not a good one at all.

Its just a song good grief, it seems like more and more each day even MORE and MORE people are trying to find something wrong with damn near everything another person is doing…except the things they do and put out there themselves.

Did he really just compare THAT crazy-ass song to MJ’s Thriller??? THRILLER??? Seriously?? Ain’t no comparing those two. I know Thriller was dark but it didn’t make me want to cut myself like russian roulette. Get off it! Her song wasn’t that good at all.

i think it is a totally unresponsible song……as a role model for the youth……and ity has no positive vibes at all……….

“…it’s 2 late 2 put a value 2 my life”…? What is this to symbolize? What can this be catergorized as? A love song? A dance track? Where is he (Neyo) going w/ this? Perfect timing to release this BTW~ seeing as people are becoming more and more depressed and suicide rates are on the rise and more & more kids are running around shooting folks and killing each other off~
Way to be responsible for your art…this will be planted firmly in the minds of the simpleminded~ I can hear it now~ “oh it’s just a song” “If your dumb enought to do what a song tells you then blah blah blah~”
    The days we are in~

I totally agree with Sweet n Evil…Ne-Yo must be on something to compared her song to Thriller. Tiffany Evans might have took it too far about worshiping the devil but, at the same time she has a point. What would make Ne-Yo think about Rihanna sitting across the table from someone else with a gun in the middle? I’m not here to judge or bash anyone but, Rihanna has gone crazy since she’s “Gone Bad” and Ne-Yo’s music and judgment has changed a bit since he when and cried on stage. I don’t like the fact that he said in his comment, “Nobody’s really going out to play Russian Roulette or thinking about killing themselves or nothing like that.” You never know what people are thinking after they here a song like this, people are more depressed these days. After what Rihanna just went through, I would think she’d want to sing music to empower and encourage woman, not crawl into a darker place. After all, she did say…”Pull the Trigger…..”

Ok im not a fan of the song or rhianna.. but i will say that music is labeled ENTERTAINMENT. But then you do have these people out here who actually live and breath music and then there are those who take music so seriously that the music that they listen to gets them through the day. To those people it may not be good. but with a name like that for a song title why listen to it if you already know its vibe? Music is entertainment and the things you do every day is called life. Learn how to separate the two and get over it. Many of us already knew that rihanna seems kind of twisted in the head.

WTF!!! That was a LAME ass excuse for a WEAK ass song. Rihanna is so much better than this and is capable of coming harder! I do like her and am a fan of most of her music but this is not the song for her to “resurface” to. She has been out the scene for 8 or 9 months so I expected her to do something controversial but not to this extent. I do agree with some of the comments below. This song is absolutely NO COMPARISON to Thriller. Thriller was fun, upbeat and had a rhythm you can dance to. This song??? You can’t do anything with it other than cry and if you are a suicidal manic depressant, follow the lyrics to the song and “JUST PULL THE TRIGGER” (smh)!!

for those that continue to say music is “just entertainment”…that’s true, however, you must realize that there are people in this world that arent as strong and level headed as yourself. Like the individuals below have stated, as a celebrity, you do have more power than you may want. Rihanna has many young followers because of the age she is and was when she first came out. As adults, we know how to seperate the “entertainment” of the song from our “real life”, however, a 13, 14, 15, etc yr old girl who feels like the break up with her boyfriend was the end of the world…may not be able to do that. Whether we are willing to admit it or not, we can all think back to our first love and heartbreak at an early age and how we didnt handle it as we would now handle it as an adult. The comments made by Ne-Yo in my opinion are extremely naiive in nature. To say “Nobody’s really going out to play Russian roulette or thinking about killing themselves or nothing like that” is a very irresponsible thing to say as the writer of the song. Just like most of us could/can listen to a N.W.A or other so called “gangsta rap” song and not feel the need to run out and commit murder….we all know it has been done a few times. A kid commits a murder and later says they got the idea from a song or a song “made them do it”. While no, that’s not a valid defense nor is it an excuse for them taking another’s life, it just proves that it does happen, has happened, and I dont see why Ne-Yo can’t for it that it may happen again in the future.

I dont know what the girl is going through and how much of the things she’s been doing lately directly correlates to the things she’s been through this year, but she’s a talented girl and should value her younger and more impressionable fans a little more than coming out with something like this. Celebrities don’t always like to be role models, but the fact remains that they are…it’s a price they pay for the fame they love.

I really think I’ll just skip past the record counter this time and not make a purchase.
This kinda makes you think back a while ago when Mary J used to sing songs that were dark and dealt with her life. And then Keyshia Cole came out the same way. Maybe..just maybe..Neo was going in that direction when he wrote this for her. Nevertheless, it is still a very poor rendition for her. Teens today are listening to every single word in every song that they hear especially their favorite artist today. Teens are looking towards some stars for support and empowerment and some (I hate to say it) ARE actually listening and imitating for guidance. It is the “Practice what you Preach” scenario if you will.
Not to mention that she is a Cover Girl model. It is actually placing not only focus on her but to that company as well. She is adding “nonsense” tatoo’s on her body in places that that “Cover Girl” ad is not going to be able to cover up in a minute. Mind you..Cover Girl is not a black company (last time I checked.)..I really don’t think it is going to last for too much longer. Maybe she needs to just go sit her lil a** down for a minute and talk to someone with a license in a private room with a nicely cushioned chair. That might help her a lil. She seems to need it right now and Neo needs to write the girl something uplifting to rap, sing or talk about behind the music.
And as for Thriller..OMG! Reallly Neo????? I can
t believe he pulled that rabbit out of his hat..Wow!..That song was about monsters. MJ teased his girlfriend in that song and the video and made it fun for kids to watch with a bag of dam popcorn and some kool-aid while they were watching it. But this song is telling folks to “PULL THE TRIGGER”…Come on Neo! Are you trying to destroy this woman’s career or what? This goes a little bit beyond entertainment because of “WHO ” is singing it..and “WHAT ” this particular individual has just suffered. It could actually even be misinterpreted that she wants to pull the trigger on the person who assaulted her..which would have been “WHO EXACTLY”?????un hugh…Hide Chris! Hide!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/missstrings43/ missstrings43

And we all thought that Chris Brown was not going to make a come back after this thing..hmph..Looks like it might be the other way around if this girl doesn’t get it together….Wrigley’s vs Cover Girl choices now…..We’ll see shortly….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/missstrings43/ missstrings43

Oh and one more thing…Rhi is singing about pulling the trigger and Chris is working for Woman’s Domestic Abuse centers, talking to the woman in the abuse shelters about it and doing his time as ordered in the ditches right now….big ..major…and I do mean …MAJOR differences right now…who’s coming back?..
    ok..I’m done now.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/FyreSkye/ FyreSkye

Honestly…. The song is both catchy and unnerving. I first listened to this yesterday, and I found myself humming the melody. The words are what is haunting. It is a lot of things being said about Ri being on one accord with the devil, and this song doesn’t help dissuade one from thinking she is turning. Ne-Yo was wrong on so many levels when he wrote this song… I mean he is free to write what he likes, but look at who he wrote it for… look at how many young people like this song (go to other websites, and they LOVE it). Rihanna is in a BAD place right now… Not because of Chris Brown… because of HERSELF. She needs help, not enablers. Ne-Yo is not taking responsibility for what he wrote, and Ri is crazy…. simple as that.

I just hope that she and all the other people they are claiming are devil worshipers, aren’t.

i have to agree that tiffany may have gone a bit far but don’t think the chick is crazy cause crazier things have been proven true, but anyway…i feel that ne-yo is way off comparing “thriller” to this song (and the term is used loosely) because it is about the nature of the song. this is a serious topic and to just assume that nobody will be affected by a song that even references death and “ending things” is just being delusional and irresponsible. artists should be more aware of what they put out there because some people don’t have a filter, some people are easiy influenced. i’m not saying censor everything, but there should be a personal standard to which they hold themselves and their art. the reality is that people have killed themselves for less, so don’t throw a brick and hide your hands, admit that you dropped the ball on this one and move on…and pray for ri ri cause the child is honestly lost…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Sen666/ Sen666

Rihanna and Ne-yo had gone emo! LOL Pathetic! This is a song you sing when you about to kill yourself or pull a murder-suicide that is all the rage around here…:? They didn’t even try to make it subliminal. This is crazy. Everyone lost their damn mind during the Great Recession, I guess…

a.) Rhianna doesn’t have any responsibility to the suicidal. Or to public opinion. Capitalism will settle it. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. And if you’re thinking of killing yourself, you’re probably going to do it anyway. I mean, the first lyric of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody was “Momma, I just killed a man. Put a gun against his head, pulled the trigger now he’s dead.” I don’t think that song significantly raised the homicide rate. Ricky Martin’s La Vida Loca’s chorus says, “Helps you ease the pain like a bullet to your brain.” I didn’t notice an increase in the suicide rate in Miami over that.

b.) I didn’t hear anything in the song about devil worship. And if she wants to worship the devil, it’s her prerogative. The same crap was said about The Beatles and almost every heavy metal band across the globe. So what. What makes this song any more of a tribute to the devil or evil than the average gangster rap song? I mean, Snoop and DMX have songs about them selling their souls to the devil…but it wasn’t REAL. Nobody I know has seen this infamous devil character and signed some sort of contract with him. Nonsense. Use your brains.

First off I work with suicidal children everyday and if you wanted to commit suicide a song would not be the reason to do it, people always want to find a scapegoat for everything. Maybe Tiffany evans thought about killing herself before, heard rihannas song and it made her thing about it again. The thought was already there before the song was written released and listened to, people need to take responsibility for thier own lives and stop blamming the media or people you have never even met. And i bet you someone will comment on my name at the top, if you do you are the reason why cacuasion people still use the word N****r.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/diva61811/ diva61811

This is really ridiculous. I can not believe someone would say that about a song. Now everyone will want to go out and hear the song because of the negative controversy surrounding the song. In any case if someone is going to commit suicide they will do it regardless of lyrics to a song. I have heard of people commiting sucicide to songs that have nothing to do with suicide so what does that say this is ridiculous. There are other artists who have lyrics about suicide why not go after them as well she is not the first artist to speak about suicide. The next thing that will happen will be attacking artists for talking about sex, drugs, or money because we all know it will influence the youth. Now don’t get me wrong some people can be easily influenced but it is the reesponsiblity of parents to censor what their child is listening to and as far as an adult they must have a weak mind to not be able to think for themselves. If there is something you don’t like or agree with my philosophy is don’t listen to it.

Well some of you I agree with and couldn’t have said it better and others…Let’s just say that I see the point you are TRYING to make and it’s cool to not want reality to slap you in the face with truth. The truth of the matter is that maybe Neyo was innocently trying to do something that was requested by Rhianna. Maybe she IS actually feeling gloomy and down about things in her life. I mean, she can’t be with the man that she says she’s in love with plus all the other things that they’ve been thru. But at the same time, music is the devil’s tune. A way to manipulate the listeners’ minds by melodic lyrics and instruments. It has been proven that subliminal messages are chanted on ppl of idolization. They are the most influential over the followers aka puppets and those are the ones that will help garuantee the idol’s fame. In return, ppl are manipulated with the words, melody and whatever demonic chants are blending in with the music. I mean, for those that are naysayers, instead of dismissing what ppl are saying, research it for yourself. Under audacity recordings, youtube, demonic music, etc. PPl don’t try to look up info, but be so quick to put their beliefs in something without having anything to back up their logics. Meanwhile, they make themselves look like complete idiots by assuming that what they know and feel is right. I respect ppl who READ and therefore can back up their feelings off of what they KNOW and not what they THINK the KNOW.

Sorry Ne-Yo, defended you on one topic, but this one is ridiculous. These children already have enough pressure on them now and to hear an artist like Rihanna sing about suicide is only going to endure this situation. I don’t care what you say, but songs give off an emotion and somebody may be at a breaking point and this damn song comes on and their stupid self will probably think its a sign to kill myself…and do it! I am not putting blame on you as a creative artist, but music is very influential and russian roulette is not a game that really needs to be glorified.
