I say “Let it go!” Back in the day, we were observant of everything that Caucasians called us, wanting to make sure nothing was considered derogatory. This is a new and different time altogether. I don’t really take offense to it. Those that grew up during the civil rights period understand the use of the word colored and it wasn’t used in a derogatory way. Sims is right. It’s kind of like us getting upset if she said “black”. She just used an outdated term.

Now that I thought about it, she’s 22, 23 years old, shouldn’t she know which term to use? It could be taken as a sign of disrespect – if she blatantly ignored the more PC term because she doesn’t feel like we should be called “Blacks” or “African Americans”.

I wouldn’t want someone to call me colored. There are TOO many other words she could have used. Maybe it was taken out of context.. but derogatory or not, “colored” is so outdated some of us take it as offensive.
