Apparently Mattel has had enough with its fun-loving, sexually-ambiguous Dora the Explorer, since the company announced last week that they would be changing the character to a more effeminate one, much to the dismay of many parents who were pleased with there finally being a doll on the market that wasn’t the epitome of pint-sized sex. However, I’d venture to say that no one really expected the new Dora to be, well, THIS girly. And now that I’ve seen her, I’m not too pleased with her, either.

Sure, the old Dora had a passé bowl cut, mom shorts and a pudgy stomach. But that’s what made her cute. New Dora, much like Barbie, Bratz, and the like, is thinner, taller, has longer hair, shiny red lips, a feminine shirt, accessories, and sparkly eyes – and is officially just another fake little girl designed to give real little girls skewed body ideals and make them feel bad about themselves.

No wonder all these parents are pissed. What do YOU think about the new Dora?

UPDATE: According to Yahoo! news,

Mattel and Nickelodeon both say there are two major misconceptions about the new Dora, which is not replacing the “Dora the Explorer” cartoon, but will be a new interactive doll aimed at 5- to 8-year-olds.

“People care so deeply about this brand and this character,” Leigh Anne Brodsky, president of Nickelodeon Viacom Consumer Products, says. “The Dora that we all know and love is not going away.”

“I think there was just a misconception in terms of where we were going with this,” Gina Sirard, vice president of marketing at Mattel, says. “Pretty much the moms who are petitioning aging Dora up certainly don’t understand. … I think they’re going to be pleasantly happy once this is available in October, and once they understand this certainly isn’t what they are conjuring up.”

Does this change your mind, or do you still think the character switch shouldn’t exist in any realm?

The new Dora may be a bit much, but we still love our Barbies. And she’s just had a birthday!

Even makeup companies are eager to board the barbie train.

Mattel is trying to attract the hispanic child as those children are pushed to grow up faster than any other minorities. The men treat there women as subordinates, though they want them to look sexy and half dressed. the television soap operas and sitcoms are all the same, exploitation of the woman, this is no surprise that Mattel is following in those steps.

Dora has to grow up to keep up with her viewers. Children do grow up why not their cartoons. New Dora is not sexy, doesn’t come with mini skirt, feathered boas, high heal shoes, tattoo maker, full lips, and a unrealistic body type.

I think its alright that she is changing because my daughter is going to change so why cant Dora grow with her. I’d rather her stay interested in Dora than to feel like she is too big for old Dora. My daughter had a shape like the old Dora when she was 4 but now at almost 6 she is gettin shapely so I think she can relate to the change. She is very girlie but a lil tomboyish because of her two older brothers. Parents need to talk to their children about change and quit acting like other people make it hard for them to raise their children. Parents need to be more active and communicate with their children rather than blame a damn doll for why their daughter cant cope with herself not looking as pretty as Dora or as pretty as any other girl. Parents you need to build up your childs, especially girls, confidence about themselves and then you dont have to worry about a doll tearing it down. Come on parents(who dont agree with the change of Dora)!!!!

Dora could have stayed chubby. The clothing upgrade is fine, but you can be chubby and still be feminine.

As for one of the previous posters. NO 6-year old should be shapely. To describe a 6-year old as that is in very bad taste.

Man why do cartoons need to grow up? They aint go out and make a f**king grown up winnie the pooh? Sometimes it aint all about us individuals. If you move on and you can’t watch the show anymore, DOH WELL. There will be plenty of kids who can still watch it with all these baby strollers getting lugged around. Bottomline they should just leave Dora alone, she doesn’t need to grow up. The people that watch the show do, and then they can find something else to do.

I think it is cute, look at the Rugrats, they grew up, so why can’t Dora? It’s not like she got big boobs or anything hanging out, her out fit is also cute, its what they are wearing now, not like its some booty shorts and a tube top, damn it look better than them cut off shorts her mom made for her LOL. And look at Barbie, she the next Marilyn Monroe, they still buying her and the clothes and outfits, hell she had a boyfriend Ken! and lets not forget Betty Boop, OMG Josephine Baker…watch out! But why they didn’t make Barney grow up…damn i miss him!!!
