She is referring to the “one drop rule” instituted in America to classify who is considered black and who isn’t. In mainstream America when you have knowledge of self, people list all of their known ancestry. Due to the slave legacy of America most people judge who you are solely on color without engaging you in conversation to find out what or who you are. Many people of mixed heritage take pride in all of their facets of their identity or select which racial identity they want to embrace and identify with. In America more so than anywhere else people want to TELL you what you are and how you are expected to act to conform to their expectations.

Her mom is Irish. She mentioned in AMerican she’s black b/c in America we had the 1 drop rule— again, going back to her parents– Black & white. In other parts of the wrold, she may not be consider black, but maybe white or whatever else. Babyraga do not eel bad about that because when I was in Elementary School I got called Paleface and other unusual names myself and I really did not it in no where growing up. I believe all of this came to a head one day when I was called Paleface and I had had enough and I jump the two boys that was joking about it. yo see Mama is full blooded Cherokee Indian and my Father (may the MOST HIGH GOD rest his soul) was African American, Colored or whatever the syndrome was during those years. My mother got a call to please come to the School because I was getting suspended for fighting. When she arrived and everyone in the Office saw how Beautiful (and still is today in her Eighty something years of age) they knew right then and there that I had finally stood my ground and was not taking it anymore.
My mother looked at me and asked the Principal “I thought you said he had gotten into a fight,” the principal said Yes, Mam, but the problem is not with your child it is what he did to the two boys. He showed my mother what I did to the two boys and she just looked at me and said Now you know what it is like not to be accepted when you have not done anything wrong. I later found out that they had never met my Mother so they did not believe it until she had to come to the School. It was my Father that always handled this with such admiration.
When my Grandmother got whim of this, she told me do not ever leave an enemy behind and I have kept that motto.
do not worry about what they will say, just leave them in the wind with their mouth wide open just wondering what.
I never knew how special I was to my Mother, Father and Grandmother until that day, you see, Momma gave Birth to four boys and one girl, I am the last one of this brood still walking on the planet. My Sister and Brothers all took the complexion of my Father but my Mother’s Hair, I took my Mother’s complexion and got a nice combination of both parents in the hair department.
From this at School, people had a very hard time believing that I was part of the Family. So be proud, you are part of a new entity on this planet and as time moves on you will see this.
One thing my Grandmother also told me was that a Cherokee never forgets who helps them, and always returns the favor.
