Editor’s Note: This makes me laugh! Relax your hair (because having nappy, Black hair during Black History Month is too militant and Panther-y and subversive. This is Obama’s post-racial America! Celebrating Black History means having straight hair like the white people who were kind enough to let us put a Black man in the Oval Office!) to celebrate BHM!

WARNING: Reading between the lines can lead to severe bouts of white-hot anger – no pun intended.

Read below! What do you think of this ad? Is this an acceptable way to celebrate Black History Month? If not, what would be more appropriate? SOUND OFF!

From Context.org:

In honor of Black History Month I thought I’d post this Family Dollar ad from last February, sent in by Gloria K.:

As Gloria says, “I guess nothing honors African-American heritage quite like cream relaxer.” Indeed. If only they’d included some skin lighteners, we’d really be set.

    Well…it is a black invention

Considering that Garrett A. Morgan, the Black man who also invented the traffic light and the air conditioner, also invented hair relaxer, I guess it IS part of the celebration of Black History Month.

ha ha. that is funny. iv been growing my natural hair for almost 2 yrs. it’s so long and so hard to comb and breaks every kind of comb i swear. i can’t stand looking at it which is why i just put it back in braids month after month. im feening for a perm right about now. i love my big strong beautiful afro but um…i love some soft silky manageable hair too

I think they mean: “here’s a sale, in honor of Black History Month”. It is still a product made for us, by us. Just my opinion.

i can see both sides of this: a black person invented it vs. it’s not celebrating the natural, Black state you were born into. it’s kind of contradictory, but whatever.

@Kashi: your hair shouldn’t be too hard to manage if you comb it while wet and/or saturated with conditioner and use a wide-toothed comb (usually more durable than smaller combs) or just use your fingers to detangle it from end to root. i’m not sure how you currently comb it, but this should work. try checking out some natural hair message boards/sites for more tips.

I agree with MMgold. I think it was just an innovative way to market a sale. I don’t think any pun was intended. Being Black or African American is much more then our hair. We could bald, natural, long hair, relaxed, flat ironed, weaved, it doesn’t matter. Hair is the newfound neccessity. How someone decides to wear their hair does not distinguish what or who they are.

I think we as a ppl need to stop being so sensitive. And publications need to stop stirring up stuff.

    Just my opinion.
