I just find it interesting that black love is not good enough to put on television. Why is it that being equal means being able to date a white person? Why is it ok to see white love on television? It’s not about being racist. Do people not see the stereotypes that are on our television today? Why is it if a black kid shoots up a school he is a thug, but if a white kid shoots up a school he is troubled and “why didn’t we see it sooner?” Why is it that the black women are usually protrayed as promiscious if they are attractive, the “b” if they are successful, the always single, or motherly fat comic relief, or just plain ditzy? It would be different if there was an equal mix of both of television. For every Al Bundy or Homer Simpson, there is a positive white male role model. Can we say the same for all black characters? We as black people know what we are like. But, somewhere there aren’t many blacks, all they see on television is the “pimp”, “thug” etc. If they see a successful black role model, he is usually not with a black woman.

Im personally dont see anything wrong with the white man/black woman. I have couple of female friends who are black and love white men. Just like I love black men. Love is love. Love does not have a color, and I think it is important to show children that now. When they are at an age where they don’t fully understand the history about black and white though I still think it is important for black children to learn about it at a certain age. Black people are not required to fall in love with only black people. White people are not required to fall in love with only white people. We love who we love and that cannot be changed. It is true that Disney has never had a royal black couple, but don’t you think that it is more important that children have a black president to look up to. He is a real life prince charming for young black boys to model themselves after, and for young black girls to use as a model for a TRUE prince charming to spend the rest of their lives with. I am not sure how ppl are going to take this but coming from a white lady who only dates black men, I am not pleased at all about the coupling of a black princess and a white prince….I have wondered forever why all of the fairy tales have been mostly about white ppl in the first place. I’m in no way hating on my race, it’s just that my children are mixed ….and not white and black….they are white and latino……however, until the spanish chic in Hunchback, there hadn’t been a latino couple either (still isn’t one)…..I am definitely for interracial coupling because I don’t think race should determine who you love….. That being said though, why can’t there be an authentic representation in a positive manner depicting what I see every day…beautiful black women happily married to beautiful black men and prospering the way everyone hopes to prosper in a relationship and in society. I think that it is great to finally have a black princess…. my granddaughter is biracial and she loves the disney princess’, but has often asked why there is no black princess???? It looks ok…Its set in New orleans I guess so looks like the cast is gonna be multi racial. I dont watch cartoons often anymore so i could care less. although it did make me a little nautious when i first clicked on the link…because I knew what people were gonna say. I think this is wonderful.. it just shows how as people were making BIG steps to show that it’s okay to date outside your race or ethnicity and still be accepted by society.

i don’t see much of a deal here. i mean, it would have been a first to have a black couple for Disney, but this is also a first (or second–Pocahontas). besides all i see on tv these days are black men with white girl, and that is very discouraging and tiring for me. it’s not fair that they get to date whichever girl they want, regardless of race, yet black women are taught to date within their race,and if they date outside it’s considered wrong or not accepted.plus that type of relationships are not depicted well in the media anyway, so i think this is a start in the right direction. either that or they get dumped for someone of different color. i think its a great idea to show that not only will black women be more encouraged to date outside their race, but also younger girls will know that they aren’t considered s**ts for wanting to date white men or befriending guys of a different race. it’ll probably take time for people to soak this in and be more tolerant about it.

Question, how many times have we seen a black man with a white woman in a Disney cartoon? For that matter what black man have we seen with any Disney affiliate geared towards youths? This is mainly referring to Disney Channel and abc family. Linkin Heights and other controversial shows on there. You know their motto “A new kind of family” makes you wonder, huh? TV and entertainment pretty much raises the majority of children nowadays so there you have it. I think the problem is that society has already taught men, in general, the features of black women is not the ideal beauty. I’m not against interracial relationships but I believe there should still be a healthy respect for both male and female of your particular race. It’s about time Disney has a black princess! Always wondered as a little girl where they were at. It’s amazing to me however, that people would get upset about the color of the prince. I for one truly believe that a prince can be found in all different kinds of skin tones. The real concern would be if this character prince is actually worthy of the princess. Or some low down egotistical hustler. Besides, in my life I happen to know way more Black men married or dating exclusively out-side of their race.

Personally, I do not have a problem with interracial dating. HOWEVER, I believe since this is Disney’s first attempt at having a Black Princess, they should have paired her with a Black Prince. Too many of our children already have an identity crisis, and since many of them are being raised via the television, I think a positive showing of a face that looks like theirs is necessary. There is enough available that shows Black Men in negative connotation; why not make a change for the better and start with our children? However, these are just my thoughts and opinions. Personally, I have no intentions of EVER dating a white man and I have white in me, but again, that’s my personal feelings.

It is sad to say that a childs Movie is up for the latest news.Yes, we know there are some people that can not leave the past behind,but why should we try to influnce the children, by frowning on this movie.Maybe if we watch the children and see how they play and not see color then why can’t we.GET OVER IT PEOPLE!!!!! As a former Disney employee and lover of almost all things Disney I think this is great. This will be the first black princess and if anyone remembers Disney has already released a black male cartoon (Dr. Joshua Sweet from Atlantis). I am very happy that there is a black princess in a Disney feature film. This allows little black girls to go to Disney and see a princess like them, dress up like Princess Tiana for Halloween, and have princess dolls they can identify with. This also helps break down the racial walls at a very young age. I say its long over due but way to go Disney!!!

To me, this does not seem like a bold step on the part of Disney. It’s set in Louisiana where various shades of brown, from dark to super light, are all considered “Creole.” It’s a very soft example of a “mixed race” union. The cartoon guy looks ethnically ambiguous to me. I’ve seen black people who look like him, especially ones from LA and the Caribbean.

Racism would be over if people would just let it go….there’s not a lot of people who still hold it in regard, mind you there will always be CULTURAL differences..that’s what makes us different!! i think this is great….Disney has always been the ones who taught children lessons that the parents were afraid to give…like about death for example..

There is nothing wrong with this at all. I’m actually quite proud of Disney for portraying a black princess with a white prince. Before you jump down my throat with negative notes…hear me out. In today’s society we always see a black man being paired with an attractive/non-attractive non-black female. Black men run to the rescue of white women all the time. Many black women are deserted by their husband/spouse and are single. Even on this site..you see how many black men claim to love white women…and there’s nothing wrong with that. Black women need and deserve to be loved as well. SISTERS PLEASE EXPAND YOU”RE HORIZON. Many of us are waiting for our black prince charming…but he may never come. I know we want to be loyal…but alot of our men are not loyal to us. They run after other races of women and leave us to care for the children and nurse our broken heart. I’d prefer a prince of color (i.e. blackrace -any shade), but understanding the the marketability would probably not be popular to the mainstream public, it’s a safe move from a revenue earning perspective.

Before you say something, make sure you know what you are talking about! It amazes me how many people can’t see the token of a gesture this film is. If both lead characters were black, this would be considered a “black family cartoon.” With two white leads, then this would be an “All American film for the whole family.” I guess blacks aren’t American. Just to show that racism is not dead, but instead ignored and internalized: If President Obama was half Mexican and half Korean would we so arbitrarily choose one race for him? President Obama is half white and half black, but yet we as a country feel fine addressing him by only one half (“The First African-American President”). Isn’t that racist? Especially, consider looking up why we have this habit of referring to half-white and half-black children as “black.” It dates back to slavery. It was refered to as the “One Drop Rule.” Look it up. Also check up on an antiracist (white) man named Tim Wise and his essay “White Privilege.”

Sweetie I dont really get your take on this issue. Reading this you contradicted yourself in too many ways to me. But this world is the way it is. I think Disney did not make the prince black because in this world racism still exsist and this movie is a perfect example of showing little black girls that a black man isn’t good enough to be her knight in shinning honor. I agree with blackasiaX, her features could stand to show some ethiticity.For the longest I have had issues with Disney portraying what was hinted as black folks as loud singing shuffling bears or monkeys in some of the films.I would still like to embrase a black PRINCE, something we have NEVER seen.For the longest I refused to even take my kids to Disney movies because of it.

I think this is absolutely WONDERFUL!! I love the idea and the fact that people are finally coming around a realizing that the color of your skin is just that…. A COLOR. We are humans not colors.

I think its good progress in my opinion. People have to realize however we are not there yet with things being completely together. I must say that I am very happy that the princess is dating or involved with a seemingly white prince (because to be honest I don’t really know what ethnicity he is). I feel more interracial couples should be displayed because that is where the world is heading. More people are beginning to look at race less and pay more attention to the individual. It makes me angry when it is seen as unacceptable to date outside one’s race. You can’t help who you love. I think this movie will be a positive for all children, I personally can’t wait to see it.

i think this is cute. i personally haven’t dated out of my race before, but….it’s not for lack of trying. i like in the deep south and the opportunity just hasn’t presented itself. i went to an all black school, work at a historically black university, etc. but…….i dont see anything wrong with it. I think there are various sides of this. I think it is great that Disney has a Af-Am princess but on the other hand by this frog becoming a caucasian prince are we saying that Af-Am men cannot be a prince? I would just be careful of how little girls interpret this. I would not want my child growing up to think that she can only find a prince in a caucasion man. I think it is important for to see a Af-Am prince as well. Then on the flip side looking at this photo of the prince he just looks really light skinned to me with brown eyes! Why is it so wrong to think this is cute? I am a biracial woman and have absolutely nothing against this arrangement. Relationship-wise it’s fine to date whomever one pleases. But I do feel that our black male youths need more positive black men to look up to. My 9 yr old son is enrolled in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program but it’s going rather slow because I won’t allow my son to be paired up with a white big brother. I just want my boys to have that positive black man in their lives. So they can see first hand that good black men do exist. White men can’t help young black men grow up to understand the ongoing issues that black people have to deal with. This is no different than Cinderella the movie featuring Brandy. The king and queen were a b/w and a w/m. I loved the movie and they crossed that racial barrier. In my mind I think it’s beautiful. I’m a mixed girl myself and I just think interracial love is HOT these days..No matter what color you are…It can be a black man and a white woman…white man with a black woman…etc…but i do feel for those kids that do grow up being a mixed child. I know from experience. My father is black and my mother is white. People hated me for that. Why I will never understand but I think it is a great idea to show the kids that love is love and love has no color.

I think that it is absolutely beautiful. Being someone with interracial couples in my family, I think that it is a great idea that “black girls” or “interracial girls” will now have a Disney characters that they can identify with. For the past few years, the USA has become a more culturally diverse country and it is time for everyday interactions to reflect that (i.e. a Black Disney Princess). For those people who think that this is not the appropriate direction, you all can “kick rocks” because this country is going to move in a more progressive direction.

I have no problem with interracial dating. I’ve done it and somewhere down the line we are ALL a product of it but I do think it would have been nice to have a Disney movie with as many Black characters as possible. It took so long for them to finally create a Black princess and with all the other movies, the entire cast is typically white or Asian (in the case of Mulan). Pocahontas was Native American & White due to the historical content but I sometimes feel like there is never anything just for Black people…even the tv shows & movies that are supposed to be for us seem to always have White people in them. But how many White shows and movies are there with no Black people? Just some food for thought…

there is nothing wrong with interracial dating, at all. but i think that it’s so importnant for little black girls to see that this thing called “black love” really does exist and really is possible. There are not enough enough positive images of successful black couples in the media (let’s see… Barack and Michelle, Will and Jada… any others?), and this could have been a chance to show little girls that if real love with a black man is what they want, then itis possible. Yes, it is a fairytale at the end of the day, but there are a lot of children out there (including myself) who grew up watching fairytales wondering why none of the characters looked like me or anyone in my life. Why couldn’t Princess Tiana’s prince be African-American? I think this new Disney movie would have been better received, particularity in the African-American community if Disney tried to present an African American Prince and Princess. I would get on my soap box about how important this is considering how Disney has shaped and molded ideas of romance, masculinity, femininity, etc. for several generations, but….

Why does the first black princess has to be in this story? A stuck up rich girl that doesn’t want to repay someone who helped her and is speaking poor grammar with a country accent. Why are we being portrayed like that.

Personally I don’t have a problem with the Prince being white. I mean lets face it people, we are lucky enough to get a black princess. You think that they were going to give us a blace prince too? This is Their way of saying “We like black people” without having to open their mouths to really speak those words. I would have rather preferred to see her with an african american prince but of course we know that some things are just too good to be true.

Im a TRUE Disney addict so before everybody gets on the “its only because we have a black president kick” this movie has been in production for years. Long before Obama came into office or better yet long before he was a running canadate. Im just glad they have changed it from what they originally purposed, cause the princess looked horrible and looked like something out of a 1930 Uncle Tom book. And the reason the Prince is white in this story cause most of the french women in Louisana are of mixed race so since the story is taking place there they are trying to make it as realistic as possible. Ummm, do people not really listen to the song that is in the background, the film is set in New Orleans hence the southern drawl and the firefly is a dead give away that this is in the South. As a white female I have dated nothing but black guys and have never seen or been treated the way most of you feel. I am definitely glad that the black princess finally emerged, now where’s my black prince, nothing wrong with the interracial couple but my son needs to see that black men are not the deadbeats they have been potrayed as. It is VERY easy to not understand how someone feels or to discredit that person’s reality when you have not had the chance to walk in his/her shoes. The only way for you to feel the anguish many Blacks feel is to leave the comfort zone of White America.

Wow, it’s amazing how race can stir up a fire that blazes as bright as the sun. I am happy that Disney has finally made the lead in one of their animated features BLACK:) I’ve grown up a fan of Disney but always wondered why none of the princesses looked like me. The fact that her prince is white, well isn’t it about time they displayed something real:) People date interacially all the time where I’m from, including me. I hope this is a start to a great change, the possibility of more diversity in Disney films… Just a side note… Because I truly accept people of every race, I also RESPECT their history and struggles. I would never comment on their lifes experiences as if I know what they go through (eh hem babigrl) So it is extremely annoying when people like to act as though the effects of our history still do not resinate throughout the generations. Years of slavery and being treated as second class doesn’t just dissapear. We as Black Americans, barely obtained the LEGAL rights we deserve in the last century. Yes we have made definate strides in the right direction as a people, and yes we can accomplish what we put our minds to. Why do you think so many of us are accomplished and educated now, even though at times we were robbed of our ideas, not given credit, or even denied our own use of our own inventions. We weren’t broken when when we were bought and sold, not when we were slaving the fields, raped, beaten, lynched, split from our families, told we couldn’t eat shop or go to certain places. We survived slave ships, slavery, racism and other injustices…and we are still here, one of the biggest cultural influences in the world. From our clothing; our speach; our style; our music; hell our overall abilities.
