To celebrate the second day of Kwanzaa’s principle Kujichagulia which means “Self-Determination” we thought what better way to show that principle in action than to highlight Self Determined African American women.

These women exhibit just how focus and determination can lift us to higher heights personally and bring about change in our communities collectively.

Share your thoughts about our list and tell us what you’re determined to do!

The world over have not been aware of these pioneering women. It is always wonderful to see that we have mentors to look too. Such women of nobility, faith, intergrity, determination and love. Love for all of us and the future is what has driven them to fight, to stand up and to show us that resiliance is withing us all and that we can all be counted and make a difference to in the lives of others.

There were only three that I had never heard of before. Two who I what to share with you are Henrietta Vinton Davis and Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson.

Miss Davis was a Shakespearean actress elocutionist and dramatic reader. Frederick Douglass introduced her in her debut in 1883 and she was a major influence on Marcus Garvey and the UNIA.

Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson made the Baltimore branch of the NAACP the largest in the country and was the first to utilize the practice of peaceful protests as a way of creating social change long before it was popular.
