Where is the line between “keepin it real” and being hurtful? When does a person stop being honest and start being hurtful? I think most of us can agree that fakeness isn’t exactly uncommon in today’s world. It is for this reason that being honest, even if not everyone will react positively, is a virtue. But most of us are also familiar with a phenomenon I’ll call “keepin it too real”. If you or someone you know can relate to most of the following list, it may be a case of keepin it too real:

1. Do your family and/or friends frequently ask you, “Why would you say that?” Obviously, there are people who are unable to take any kind of criticism. But if your opinions constantly cause others to react in surprise and anger, you might want to consider what you are being so honest about.

2. Do you ever ask yourself why you’re telling someone information? I think most of us can agree that informing a friend that her man is being unfaithful or that a dress she’s trying on does nothing for her are examples of (usually) constructive honesty. But what about telling someone that her man kind of reminds you of Steve Urkle? Is that just being “real”?

Is it time to end the friendship? Read more here.

3. Do you have a “That’s just how I am, deal with it” attitude regarding your personality? If so, one question you might ask yourself is if you believe every part of a person’s personality is perfect. What about the idea that part of life is about learning about yourself and improving who you are? If you realize that your brutal honesty is alienating you from others, maybe that could be an area of yourself to evaluate.

Improve yourself, improve your credit!

What do you think, hello beautiful?? When does keepin it real go wrong?

“Keeping it Real.” Translation, “I’m ghetto and unsophistcated as hell, and I’m comfortable in my social-economic skin.

Keeping it too real sometimes is a lack of sensitivity. While I keep it real, I also know how to relay that message so it comes off in a respectful manner

This is some ol’ bullshyt, if somebody tell me I’m keepin it ‘too real’, I’ma tell dem they keepin it ‘too fake’ an move left, because there really is no such thing.

If you are bringing up a jus downright bogus topics all harsh like ‘see you shouldnt have been fukin thas why you got AIDS mofo’ then yea, shut tha fuk up, but other than dat keepin it real an bein honest should be welcome esp how fake everybody is now, alot of times under the guise of ‘i was tryin to spare you feelings!’.

Following this pucci azzed doctrine most of the leaders that we herald today, Jesus, Muhammad, Malcolm, Martin, wouldnt even exist, after all ‘they kept it tooo reeeal’

I sometimes think I keep it too real but some people need to know things so they can see that the grass isnt always green on the other side. A little constructive criticism never hurt anyone but if a person is offended then maybe they need to stop being so sensitive and just have some heart.. Me personally I dont get offended by criticism thats just a part of life that we must deal with….

Please be careful of “Keeping it Real”, especially in some careers. I have seen quite a few blacks keep it real out of a job and in some aspects, out of a career. Remember, be grown about it. It is not what you say but rather how you say it.

It comes down to liking yourself enough to except that everybody might not like you, but you still have to make yourself laugh and hopefully others too.
