Solange and Chris Rock were on “The Oprah Show” yesterday promoting Chris’ new movie “Good Hair.” Bey’s little sis, came to Oprah today to talk about hair, including why she got a relaxer at 4 years old, why she cut her hair, and how much she spent per year on relaxers.

Take a look:

I am so mad that I missed this. However, I plan on supporting Chris Rock on this new film. Solange looks great with the new do. I didn’t like it at first but love it on her now :). Can’t wait to see this. It has gotten awesome reviews so far and it is a very relevant and necessary topic in our community.

its funny how a lot of black people hate on b***hes wit perms but will be the first ones to make fun of a broad walking around wit an afro and dreads, u know nappy hair aint attractive be honest. why do u think so many black females get perms. wat female don’t want to have nice hair. how come no one talks about white women coloring and straightening they s**t? thats altering.

I think it takes more effort and time to keep up natural hair than permed hair. Natural hair uses just as much products as permed hair. Who cares…to each’s own!!!

Just my opinion…but how can men say “F” a perm and that we’re subconsciously telling ourselves that God made a mistake…when you go to the barber shop more often than women go to the salon??? So why don’t u go natural and let your hair and beards grow out. How about you give up your cuts and linings!!!

Okay when we start identifying ourselves as something that males use to denigrate us there’s a serious problem. But, people there is some work to be done on our mentalities. We have been conditioned to believe that some things about us as black people are inherently “bad”. WOW….mental slavery is far WORSE than anything imaginable. When your thoughts of self subconsciously tell you that you are “ugly” or less “attractive” that is SAD. We all want to look our bests,ok that’s a given. However, we do a real disservice to our ancestors who fought, died, perservered and sacrificed so that we could be PROUD of who we ARE! Some of the posts are symbolic of a more profound problem called SELF-HATRED. See, the issue really is not whether you perm, straighten, lock, or twist your hair! It’s about what you feel about who you are DESPITE your DARN HAIR!!! There’s a bigger picture that we’ve missed here.

    @ Darealreckless…

I could easily say: “White women and their tanning booths that make them look old as sh*t” or…”Latina women and their hair dye and ill fitted jeans”. And the list goes on and on. Let’s not take this as an opportunity to devalue Black women as if they’re the only group of women with a “thing”

    :)
