This struggle goes way beyond the many beautiful shades of color that African-Americans’ possess, to the system that was designed to “Divide & Conquer”… You don’t believe me, then check out a copy of “The Willie Lynch Letter”. Although this is not where these theories derived from, this is where you can read for yourself just what exactly the purpose for the whole systematic division of our people originated from. After our people were forced to the states, there was no way of knowing who came fromn what tribe. There was no way of knowing what occupations they possessed, while still in Africa. If they (the slave masters) had, then the whole D & C theory would be based on bloodlines, skills, education, etc. (Just a note: we’ve managed to do that on our own, since we have been on auto-piolot for some time now).
Point is, the slave masters knew nothing about us, so they caused bitterness between us based off of the only thing they could: which is what they saw, hence the ‘color’ division began.
Keep in mind, ‘color’ was not the only issue used for division, but, in being shallow, some people still use that, because they are superficial.
Most people these days are still niave. If it didn’t happen the prior day, then they forget about it. (These are the same people that feel that racism is a thing of the past.)
When I was H.S., I remember that they wanted me to be on the Dance Squad. After I realized that the only reason why I had been recruited was because of the shade of my skin, I didn’t try. There were plenty of darker skinned females there that could dance rings around me, but they were cut EARLY on. I barely even moved, but I was given chance after chance after chance. I d*mn near had to walk off, before I was cut. (Needless to say, none of the squad choosen could fail the ‘paper bag’ test).
I could go on with examples, but I won’t.
Point is: the only reason why Omarion’s choice is so-called “news worthy”, is the simple fact that it rehashes old, deep wounds.
Times have changed… Unfortunately, people move at a slower pace.

So in the end it’s all about preference and we cant knock a person for what they like, just because we may not fit the mold.

It makes very good sense that he would be attracted to women that remind him of his mom. Men tend to gravitate toward women that are similar to their moms as women seek fatherly-like qualities in their men.

I just think it grew out of a slavery mentality where the lighter you were the more “desirable” or “non-threatening” you were to whites. It happens in most colonized areas where whites created a sense of inferiority. I think thats the only reason it bothers me when people don’t understand that the legacy of “light skin isn’t just a “preference” its a history. Most people are completely ignorant of that when they make comments for either side which is apparent.

I totally disagree with what he said because I believe all women are beautiful, no matter their size, shape, height or complection. But come on now women please don’t act so damn innocent…women just as guilty of doing something like this as Omarion is, a lot of women judge a man by his appearance and not by his qualities or his personality. Many women may not care about the complection of a man as Omarion cares about the woman he dates but not all women but some women could really give a damn about a man unless he has muscles, looks like a damn football player, model, actor or somewhat thuggish or is thin. And some men not all men would not give a damn about a woman unless she has long hair, thick as all get out, a nice complection and a face as pretty as Halle Berry’s. Most of this is due to society allowing us to think that bigger people are unkept and unhealthy which is a complete misconception. Last time I checked I keep myself clean and smelling terrific at all times, and I got my doctor’s report telling me that other than my weight I am a healthy man with no health issues and a long life to live. Now I know that I’m gonna get some backlash for this but I could really give a damn because this needs to be said and because I get judged based on my size all the time and I have been my whole life and this kind of in justice has to end.

Until you see things from the point of view of a person who has been judged then you will never understand where I am coming from or understand what I mean. i dont really care about the skin color itself, its the attitude that comes along with it. from my personal experience light skin women seem to have better attitudes than dark skin women. yes i have met redbones with funky ass attitudes and i have met dark skin women who were just as sweet and polite as can be, but across the board the light skin women i meet are more chill and down to earth. on the other hand my uncles on my mom side are all light skin and they all married very dark skin women, they all say thats their preference.
