As cruel as it may be to some, Ne-Yo is telling the truth. I’m a thick girl as well, and what he is saying is the same mess that people from the music industry, to your living couch thinks. You do have some big girls that make it (which in that industry is VERY few), but unfortunately (in the general sense) they got to have the look to. People in the music industry is looking for everything (looks, “talent”, etc…), because they know that’s what sells. Me personally at this point in time, if I was in the music industry and I know that my audience want the WHOLE package, I would not invest thousands (maybe millions) of dollars on a person who doesn’t have this superficial complete package, and who isn’t going to make me money at the end; even though I would rather pick the girl with so much more talent, even though she’s thick. I am a singer and also a big girl, but I don’t take offense to what Neyo is saying because what he’s saying his spoken from an industry standpoint. Also, Neyo was very positive in his advice to this young lady and was very tasteful in his advice. He didn’t just say “you have to lose weight to be in the industry”. He said that in order to be in the “pop” arena, unless you have other accomplishments ie: an academy award, like Jennifer Hudson or fan face, ie: Jennifer Hudson in American Idol, then you have to take his advice since he is in the industry and didn’t just come onto the scene because he had talent. Its unfortunate, but it’s reality, when he talks about Bey bein a “big girl” he’s not necessarily calling her a “big girl” cuz thats what he thinks of her, he’s telling the truth, in this society and in the entertainment business, Beyonce is teetering between being considered a plus size woman and a thin woman, because unfortunately in the entertainment world, if you’re above a size 5 you’re considered plus size it seems like. You can’t get mad at him for telling her the truth, and preparing her for what she is going to have to put up with, now its up to her whether she is willing to confront the entertainment industry with her size and try to make it without changing her self. I am a big girl and I look good with it to and I am an aspiring singer. There are a lot of big girls out there that have made it in the industry. Look at Jennifer Hudson, Monique,Queen Latifa,Toccara,Jill Scott, Missy Elliot, Countess Von, Kim Cole, Kimberly Lock and so many more. These women were and are famous because of there talent and not there waist size. You can be big and beautiful as well as small and beautiful. Just take a look at my pictures. I bet Ne-Yo couldn’t share the stage or hold a candle up to Luther, Gerald Lavert or Barry White. Those were big celebrity men who’s names will forever be a house hold name, where as he may just fizzle out lit a match.
What he needs is a big girl to cook him a good meal and leave those lil skinny ass girls alone that don’t know how to us a stove (that why they eat salad all day, cause you don’t have to cook it) and let a big girl cook for him. I totally agree with all comments made. The reality is that the average woman, the real woman is not a size 2 with a butt from here to kingdom come. And the sooner we start opening our eyes to real beauty the better. Also, take a look back to the old school powerhouses like Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Roberta Flack… They were all on the heavy side, but with their commitment to doing the thing they loved which was singing, they created a great history for themselves and the American music industry. OK, even as a curvy woman I am NOT offended by the advice Ne-Yo gave this singer. If you watch the video you can tell he was NOT being mean when talking to this young lady. She wanted advice and he gave it. The music industry is VERY competitive. He told her if she wanted to go the neo-soul route, she could stay the way she was; that’s true. Look at Jill Scott. But he said to share the stage with Beyonce, she would need to trim down. Well, look at TV. You can say, “That’s wrong,” all day long, but if Beyonce let herself go and gained 40 pounds, you would talk about her all day long….and NOT in a good way. I chose a career where my appearance didn’t make or break whether or not I worked. But if I had chosen a show business career, you can best believe I would’ve worked like hell to stay in a single digit dress size.

Beyonce her self has stated she works really hard to keep her weight where it is. she was not as small and curved in her earlier times but that’s ok. She wanted it she worked hard and she got it. I don’t agree totally with everything he is saying. He’s being honest about the pop world being shallow, but to say she gonna have a hard time if she don’t look a certain way is not all true. There are plenty of pop and R and B divas who are big and successful. And Jordin Sparks isn’t exactly skinny but she was still chosen as American Idol and is doing just fine. The young lady has a nice voice and I’m sure that maybe a makeover would suffice and the weight loss should be just to enhance her performance capabilities. Girlfriend, do your musical style the way you’d like and just go Indie. If the people love you a lot, then you’ll get picked up by a label for your abilities and talents. You have the potential to be a moneymaker and money talks honey. If you go to a gym do it because you want to better yourself, and for your health but never to please anyone. And judging from your original piece, you sound very neo soul despite your weight. I would buy your music any day.
