in a way it is racist .As we all know the streotypical “black folks love fried chicken.” But if you watch other popeyes commercials you see more black people than white. There known for their Louisiana style flava, and there just trying to proceed in that. Honestly when i saw it i immediately saw a flaw and where they’re trying to get at. But other than, don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.

How ironic is this post, being that it was yesterday that I was sharing with a friend of mine that this commercial is vey questionable. I am not one to pull the racism card at every angle, but this commercial is a modern day creation of the past mammies, coons, and bucks.

I think the main issue is that there are not enough brothers and sisters on the creative side of advertising. So you have a ton of people that do not know black culture creating ads that are supposed to resonate with african americans. Its a problem.

when they first started showing this commercial I remember thinking why did the actress even agree to aing such a role? But then I realize the bigger picture is that even in the 21st century we are still limited in our potrayal in the mainstream. They would NEVER offer Sandra Bullock, Jessica Simpson, or Miley a commercial such as this. The roles for black actors are still thugs, prostitiutes, jive talking coons and sidekicks. No one said anything about the Popeye’s commercial with the black guy frying the fish and shrimp, but now that it is a woman and actual chicken it is racist… oh well. In my neighborhood I have seen Black, Latino, and Asian people cooking in actual Popeye’s. If she was an actual cook or an actor let her make her money in this economy. The GSD&M Story Behind Annie The Chicken Queen And Popeye’s Is “Proud”
Yesterday, I seriously questioned the Popeye’s CMO, GSD&M as a whole and ECD Mark Taylor’s judgement in letting such the blatantly racist and pathetically ignorant “Annie The Chicken Queen” commercial hit the airwaves. And here’s where it gets interesting, according to sources inside Greed, Sex, the creative team allegedly fought against the spot. Here’s just one source:

“As an employee there, let me be very CLEAR when I say that he [Taylor] as well as all other creative directors, and pretty much the entire creative Dept. [sic] actually fought this campaign to the bitter end. In fact, as you wrote in an article a few weeks ago, The [sic] higher ups in the agency actually went behind the creative department’s back and hired a freelancer to do this. He is rumored to be pretty ethnically insensitive (but from the looks of his latest campaign that’s obvious). Overall, Mark Taylor and most of the agency agrees with your post, that the campaign is offensive and stereotypical, but that’s not what’s being implied in the article. That’s why I hope you do a follow up article to get the TRUTH out – That Mark Taylor and the creative department had nothing to do with this ( in fact, it’s that freelancer who’s producing it because the creative dept. wont be associated with it.)

Now isn’t this interesting… we did report that CEO Roy Spence had leapt over the head of Taylor and selected a freelancer to perform ancillary work on the Popeye’s account, but in no way did we think that Spence would let this guy’s work be the pillar of the campaign; to be produced into million dollar nationwide broadcast spots. That’s well, that’s some big balls right there. We were wrong in blaming Taylor for the showing the green light to this work. Blatantly wrong and we appreciate the correction.

Now then, Mr. Spence and the CMO of Popeye’s Dick Lynch have some explaining to do. You are both on the hook. Naturally, we reached out to Popeye’s to see what they had to say about their controversial campaign. And guess what? They don’t much seem to care, which surprises us quite a bit. Their response to questions about consumer concerns over the campaign, as well as the fact that the GSD&M creative team fought against the ad spot and that an outside freelancer had to be brought into to create the work?

“Annie,” our new advertising character, expresses the heart and soul of the Popeyes brand. Her lively personality and energy underscore the pride, passion and authenticity that go into our carefully prepared, delicious, Louisiana-style chicken. We are proud of this campaign. I specifically question him about the spring rolls and the noodle soup, yet – with the anxious enthusiasm of a child on Christmas Eve – he couldn’t stop reminding me (while taking the menu from my hand to flip it over and point to the pictures) of their barbeque pork and chicken dishes. I kinda chuckled because I couldn’t believe he was so insistent on what he thought I’d really want to eat. By the third time, I had to assertively refuse ANY meat: “I just want the noodle soup, bruh,” I said, now angry because he kept insisting the barbeque and chicken dishes. Trust me, it’s always racial, and it’s always an insult. Whether you are aware of it or not.

This commercial isnt racist, the woman is playing the role of a popeyes worker from New Orleans, Bojangles chicken almost has the same vibe. The woman did her job and thats making people hungry enough to go and get chicken. And being a chef , most white folks eat pasta, most blacks eat chicken fried, baked, jerked, whatever, southern white people eat Beef, steak burgers, most Hispanics eat pork and beef, most Asians eat seafood, it depends on your ancestors resources and what they had to work with growning up. The commercial does rely heavily on stereotypes, and we are so accustomed to seeing stereotypes that we start believing that they are true. It is lazy advertising, and the commercial is not creative.

I first saw that commercial about a week or so ago. The first word that came to my mind was koon. The second was ant jamima 09. The people saying get over this and it’s just a commercial are completely clueless to the stereotypes and caricatures that have been made of blacks in this country. It may not have been the intent of popeye’s to make a racist commercial, but unfortunately, that is exactly what they did. It should be pulled. In no way does it inspire me to go get chicken from popeyes, nor should it inspire anyone else from its perceived target audience.

I definitely saw the typical Mammie (named Buelah, Annie, etc)character being portrayed in this ad, way before I saw the article. I don’t think it’s particularly racist, but it’s definitely playing into the stereotypes more blatantly than is appropriate. Granted the demographi would probably be black families, but I think this character could have been shown more tastefully( ie compare KFC’s “Tyson Kitchen Chef” to Popeye’s “Annie the Chicken Queen”)

Well, I live in a small area in PA called the Lehigh Valley, we get White Castle, Sonic, and all these other ads for fast food places we actually have to leave town just to get to… I mean we got plenty of KFC, Arby’s, McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and all that… but these other places we don’t have, we get ads for ALL THE TIME… it’s crazy.

Well I see everyone is convince that this commercial is not racist….. When I first seen this commercial witih my girl, we both couldn’t help but notice how EXTREMELY racist this commercial was. When looking at this commercial, what consumers do you think “Popeyes” is trying to attract? In addition, What’s up with the “Get up off that floor!!!” Maybe I’m thinking about this wayyy to much, but always know, most times your first thought is usally the right one!!!

I find it very interesting to say the least, that every time I sign on to Blackplanet there are these stories asking the racial intentions of one thing or another. Usually whatever it is in question is a commercial or some sort of advertisement. FACT: There are lots of racial undertones to much of what we see in entertainment (not always pointed at black people might I add); however, I feel that you disregard lots of other creditable and newsworthy stories and create a distraction from real racial injustices. This forum presents a great opportunity to inform the public of real problem but instead you choose to repeatedly flood us with this mess. Soon or later, people will become so immune to these post till they no longer care to read them and they actually miss the opportunity to come together collectively to resolve a real issue when (and I said when, not if) it presents itself. Wow its scary to see that so many of us is missing the whole point behind the commercial. They are telling “US” and the world that this is what you can expect a Black women to act like. Well… maybe if they didn’t have the woman talking like she came straight out of Aunt Jemima’s kitchen with all the “Uh huh’s,” “Mm hmm’s” and “Honey’s”… not all black people talk like that. I blame the people who produce and direct these commercials. This is not the only commercial where someone is talking and over acting in stereotypical manner. I’ve seen many commercials- even more lately-where black women are taking and acting this way. Look at that lady on the elevator in that Hamburger Helper commercial…. many of the women in those Kool Aid, Diabetes, and Life Insurance Commercials. There was even this commercial back in 90′s where this woman was going around gossiping about her husband’s constipation issues. She too, talked and acted the same way “Honey, baby, suga, child…” It IS offensive!

In addition to the talk and overzealous acting, I see when they cast most African Americans, their hair tends to be uncombed (i.e. twigs, dreads with a lot of new growth, the mop hair). The producers and casting people might want to call it being cultural, I call it putting us in a negative light. I think it’s cruel and disrespectful.

Last but not least there’s the media coverage of white couples from Hollywood toting arund babies they adopted from africa like they are an accessory or something. Reporters going to the most rowdy set of black people they can find on the corner to get their opinion about a breaking story, the list goes on and on.

To me, it seems like a lot of this negative exposure intensified since Barak Obama became our President. There’s many people out their who still have that old way of thinking. That supremacy mentality. It’s like these people are trying to throw cheap punches at the Black community because finally we have a black President in office.

As an individual and an African American, I’m not happy with some of the President’s spending decisions because it seems like these banks and big corporations don’t need to have any more money given to waste. Nevertheless, I still support President Obama and wish him success in trying to redeem America from this horrible recession.

i dont think its racist, its a black lady trying to sell chicken. So what! If its was a white lady, i guess we would have a propblem with that too. We always getting mad at stuff like that. There’s alot of “white commercials” and those white people are making money for it. so why is it so hard for black people to let go of the color thing and be proud that we can express our culture, on tV, be black and proud, and get money for it. its a win win situation! there aint that many commercials on tv with blacks, she owns this one!!!! let her have her moment, damn!
