Hey, I love and respect them all the R&B female groups. The one who stands out has to be salt-n-pepa. They did their thing in what was a male-dominated rap field at the time. To this time, no one else came close. I remembered JJ Fad, but for some strange reason they were never heard from again. We had some great female hip-hop artists in our time, but hardly any more female crews. That’s why I think Salt-n-Pepa’s place in hip-hop, is so significant.

Destiny’s Child Shouldn’t Even Be In The Same Slide Show As These Groups. Im Sorry For All Those Who Belong To The Church Of Beyonce, But Think Of All Those Girl Groups And There Music And Voice Ranges Than Compare Them To Destiny’s Child. Destiny’s Child Was Good But Not Great.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/prism11/ prism11

Well you know they said Top Selling girl groups so Im gonna leave it alone…but a list of black girl groups that doesn’t include Labelle loses all credibility with me…thats just me though

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blackdiamond184/ blackdiamond184

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/4_sa-kin/ 4_sa-kin

with the subtraction of destiny child you don’t get female artist like those anymore

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shamel_/ Shamel_

WOW!!! You brought back into time with this one….the good ole days. This list was well put together. However, I have to agree with many when it comes to 702. Although I liked them they were not a “top selling” group. Other than that this list was PERFECT :). Black women age gracefully. Most of these women haven’t aged a bit (especially TLC, En Vogue, and Salt n- Pepa)…they look AMAZING!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sexeeblk/ sexeeblk

I’D GIVE ANYTHING 2 C AN XSCAPE REUNION…TINY 4GET ABOUT THAT REALITY SHOW…GET UR GIRLS AND DO THE DAMN THANG!!! BUT I’M HAPPY ENVOGUE IS COMING BACK…AND BEYONCE ENOUGH SOLO..GET BACK WITH THE GIRLS 4 ONE MORE ALBUM…2 ME DESTINY’S FULFILLED WAS THE BEST ONE…BUT THEY ALL WERE GOOD ALBUMS

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sensualseduction1986/ sensualseduction1986

Out of most of these gropus, TLC was all about all the members not just ONE. That was the best group of all time, not Supremes.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Arrielle2007/ Arrielle2007

I would love to see some of these group have a reunion. En Vogue, Xscape, SWV, etc. We have no good girl groups out now.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/R__M/ R__M

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/britt4lyfe77/ britt4lyfe77

All of these groups were the best ever!! The only one I had never heard of was Brownstone. I’ll have to download some of their stuff.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/elitewoman30/ elitewoman30

Here is the top Three Groups
    SWV
    TLC
    Salt n pepa

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/dirtymind78/ dirtymind78

Thanks for the posting this. I haven’t seen a girl group since Destiny’s Child. Where are they hiding? One question, how come the Pointer Sisters, the Honey Cone, the Three Degree, MoKenStef, Sister Sledge, and other great Girl Groups didn’t make the cut?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/dirtymind78/ dirtymind78

Thank for posting this. I haven’t seen girl groups since Destiny’s Child. I know that they out there somewhere but I haven’t seen them on TV. How come that Sister Sledge, the Pointer Sisters, the Honey Cone, the Three Degree, MoKenStef, and other Girl Groups from the past didn’t make the cut?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/badazyellagrl/ badazyellagrl

britt i cannot believe that u never heard of brownstone!! they were one of the flyest girl groups out there!! along with jade.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_LaDy_SoPrAnO_/ _LaDy_SoPrAnO_

CHANGING FACESS!! smh!! i just rememberd them!! what about Changing Faces. I loveeeed brownstone back in the day!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ciera0687/ ciera0687

These were definitely some of the best girl groups from my generation. Being born in the late 80s and growing up with SWV and Xscape and TLC brings back memories. I still jam these girls on my IPOD to this day.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/vasco5/ vasco5

i love pebbles who sang “girlfriend how could let them treat you so bad” and that’s exactly what she and her lable did to these talented girl i think if they had someone stronger with them they would stick together and still making hit records i miss left eye she was really searching to put herself back on top but unfortunately there’re ppl in dis world are here only for distraction when they don’t know they purpose in the world they think we should live for journey and let death take its course and work and just multiply in a world with ppl that has know proper education

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/wwhit77389/ wwhit77389

Remember the girl group Zane’ them girls could sing also.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/onyx11_76/ onyx11_76

You all have named some of the best groups while I remember Brownstone I can’t remember what they sang but if I hear it know I will remember. Jade, those are my girls and they could sing too. Total and SWV great groups but vocals for them were average, I think average singers make the best entertainers. Envogue, I don’t have to say much about them we all know they were the bomb, they just had really cheesy dance moves, well maybe they weren’t cheesy back in the late 80′s/90′s. And I used to be crazy about Peebles she was so pretty and “Mercedes Boy” was and still is my jam. Man those were the days. And TLC was on more of a R&B/POP genre but I appreciated the positive messages they put out there not only for young girls but for eveyone. “I ain’t to proud to Beg was cool but it emphasized safe sex and Left Eye with her condoms all over the place. Waterfalls was A GREAT song and Unpretty was really positive too. TLC really hit home with a lot of their music. RIP Left Eye.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/onyx11_76/ onyx11_76

Breakitdown Salt and Pepa was the s**t. I loved that they were rappers but very positive on top of that, not like the Lil Kim’s or Trina’s of the world. They did the damn thing, much love to them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/reginadallas727/ reginadallas727

OMG I THINK IM GONNA CRY THOSE PICS BRUNG BACK MEMORIES! I HAVE ALWAYS LOOOOOVE SWV AND TLC! THOSE WERE THE GOOD OL DAYS!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/adamwsu/ adamwsu

Maybe I am dating myself, but what happen to the Emotions….it was a all girls group that did Flowers, The Best of my Love, many more. The list also missed Martha and the Vandelles. I will admit, the list is great, but in honor of the really great black female groups….Lets give them all props.
    adam

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pretty-cp/ pretty-cp

Wonderful article! All of these groups plus others would make one heck of a concert for today. Seeing those pictures brought back memories and my cassette tapes. LOL. I do agree that Martha and the Vandelles and Labelle might should have been included because if it were not for them then none of the others (expect The Supremes) would not have probably been there. In fact there are others such as Jade and Zhane that come to mind as well. However, ladies and gents there could only be 10 on the list. Still wonderful article. Thank you Hello Beautiful for giving props to these ladies. To God Be the Glory.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MsRain_/ MsRain_

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/JimmyBones22/ JimmyBones22

REALLY, I AM JUST PISSED OFF THAT THEY HAD THE NERVE TO PUT A LOT OF THE NEWER GROUPS OVER THE OLDER ONES!!!!! HOW THE F*CK DO YOU PUT DESTINY’S CHILD OVER SWV???? 702 OVER XSCAPE????? BUT YOU KNOW, THE SUPREMES ARE #1 SO I GUESS THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lswilliamsb32/ lswilliamsb32

This just reminds me how old I really am!!! I remember all these groups like it was yesterday. I am named after the Cherylle’s girl group. Now who remembers them? So that tells my age, but I am a lady I am not going to tell. lol All of you ladies have done a wonderful job of entertaining and to the ones we’ve lost, you will be missed. I still listen to the tapes, now on disc.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/YOURNAWTEEGIRL/ YOURNAWTEEGIRL

    NEVER HEARD OF BROWNSTONE
BUT I STILL LOOVE ME SOME EN VOGUE
    THEY’RE MY FAV

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ket_Ket/ Ket_Ket

OMG I love all those groups, especially TLC and xscape, those were my girls. But all those groups were great.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tbone1971/ tbone1971

Why are these groups not on this list? La Belle, martha reeves and the vandellas, the emotions, the jones girls, pointer sisters, 3 degrees, honey cone!…they were the best and could SANG!!! 702? salt n pep( they don’t even sing) this list is bogus, it must have been created by a 10 year old. If this is done by total album sales, please show the numbers. by the way Milli vanilli sold a ton albums too if that is your criteria.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tbone1971/ tbone1971

    I forgot to mention Jade…

I love my SWV…I really wish they would do a reunion album!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Stan_Vinyl/ Stan_Vinyl

Personally I thought this was a good list, you can twist this many ways and each time you’re going to find some female soul group that was hot.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1FineDay_/ 1FineDay_

There are many more great girl groups but I think this list is well justified.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/fetti10/ fetti10

Brownstone? they had one hit. same for 702. total had a couple, but that was puffy/biggie influenced. theres some other groups left out like the emotions and other female groups that paved the way. but i could listen to xscape, tlc, en vogue & swv all day

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shindogg/ shindogg

oh damn! en vogue is such a sexy group! some of the groups aint hot at all. i aint heard of no brownstone. 702 id also forgotten about. supremes was a looooong time ago. “nowhere to run to” is a good song though. maybe xscape had talent but only girl in the group worth a s**t is kandi. shes bangable.
