As we reported on Tuesday, Mattel’s new and improved black Barbie line was released this week, but it is already being criticized by some African-American girls who claim the company went too far with the dolls associated “hip hop” accessories.

The New York Daily News showed the new “So In Style” trio of dolls – Grace, Kara and Trichelle – to several girls in New York to get feedback.

“Not all black people like hip hop,” said Barbara Mootoo, 15, of Manhattan, looking at Kara’s silver rope chain necklace. “They gave her a chain like a 50 Cent video.”

Tyaine Danclaire, 15, of the Bronx, liked Trichelle’s straight, long hair because it looked like “a weave,” but she thought the idea “was sorta racist.” She continued, “They say black girls are ghetto with the gold earrings, with the big bling; I don’t agree with that.”

Veteran Barbie designer Stacey McBride-Irby, an African-American mother of two, created the dolls so her kids could have toys that look like their neighborhood friends.

“Barbie Finally Goes Ethnic”

Mattel announced today their introduction of new Black Barbie dolls. The new dolls have fuller lips, a wider nose, more distinct cheekbones and curlier hair. Deemed the “So In Style” line, or S.I.S, the line features Kara, Trichelle and Grace who are three best friends in tune with fashion, fun and music.

Take a look at the dolls below:

And don’t worry ladies, the dolls come with “Aqua Curl” technology that allows you to curl, straighten and style their doll’s hair with a spray of water and hair styling tools.

We stopped buying white barbie dolls for kids in the family a long time ago. It’s about time they caught up and gave a better depiction of what black people look like. My better guess is that they’ve lost money to the bratz dolls and other doll collectionss who have produced dolls that look reflect what that group looks like and is non-white. Best believe they lost some money somewhere down the line….THAT’s why they changed.

They been had black barbie dolls by mattel thats what i bought… but what caused them to lose money was the fact that barbie went up to 19.00 in the 90′s. it was cheaper to go to dollar general and get a generic doll.

I remember Mattell trying this same thing back in the 90′s with a line of 3 black dolls that were the equvilent of Barbie, the main one’s name was Shoni, then there was her dark skinned friend, Nichelle and a really light girl called Aisha. Those dolls didn’t sell well because people preferred to keep buying the white Barbie or the black Barbie that had white featutes but was painted black. The faces of Nichelle and Aisha have been used as Barbie faces and reproduced in various colors after the Shoni line was discontinued, but Shoni’s body was never used. Nichelle’s shapelier body and broader forearms have also become a trademark of the newer Barbies, white and black. So my question is, if Barbie stole all of Shoni’s features to make the Barbie line, why didn’t Shoni sell? Was america just not ready to accept black features or the ideal of ethnic beauty in the 90′s? Keep in mind that the girl who did the research with the seporate but equal case of the 60′s in which they asked several children which doll was prettier between the white and the black doll got the same results in 2007 as they got in the 60′s (all the black children thought the white doll was prettier). Look at the line of Bratz dolls and see if you don’t agree that the lighter doll, Yasmine, thouht to be redbone or latina, outsells the darker sasha doll. By the way, Yasmine is supposed to be Arabian, and is named after the daughter of the creater of Bratz, who is also Arabian, but they never disclosed that information because of how Americans think of people from the middle east after 9-11(safer to let people think she is whatever they want her to be, lightskinned or latina). All of this is to say that parents should be careful what toys they buy for their children, because they are sending the message to them of what is and is not acceptable as beautiful.
    P.S.
I am working on a full length article on this very subject, and that is why i know so many tasty tidbits about black fashion dolls. Another issue i will bring up before i go is African American dolls, even when they are designed after real people, are generally produced in lighter colors than the actual skintone of the star. Do a picture search for BRandy’s barbie-like doll and you will see that after the first line of dolls didn’t move like Mattell wanted, they lightened her skin so that she was even lighter than beyonce, but kept the features the same. SMH!!!! and black people actually buy it!!!!

which part of them dolls have ethnic hair…there dolls are sporting there own WEAVES! and the lil sisters dont cut it, they come arcross as baby mammas

thats what mattel are promoting here
if they had real kinky hair or afros i would of been a lil more impressed cos it would be a positive imagine

90 % of full black girls are not born with no straight brown /auburn hair

and why ain rt there any doctor barbie with her medicine and stephecope or a scientist barbie with her little lab? oh yea barbie is really bimbo.

Those little girls that are criticizing this doll already need to sit down somewhere. This is a big step up from barbies back in the day so be grateful. It’s a black women that design the dolls according to how she see herself and the black people around her so how are the dolls racist? It jus goes to show that no matter what is done to try to bring up black people, there’s always going to be someone in the corner that thinks otherwise.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/VIDEOMAKER/ VIDEOMAKER

All we see is the answer of 2 girls out of how many?
What it doesnt tell you is how many girls were asked this question, their race, ethnicity, or age group, and what percentage of them was “for” or “against” the new dolls.
It would be nice if the reporter of this story showed more graphics.
This story actually asks more questions than it answers!

Yes those little 15 year old girls sound pretty ignorant. I like how they made barbies’ features and hair look like it comes from the skin their in. All black people may not like hip hop(which is a little odd being that the music of hip hop originated from africa), but that has nothing to do with how these barbies were created. All of them do not have chains on. They all have different interests and careers, as the creator explained and showed in the video.

    Dis_is_it,
ummm..the white barbies do have little sisters and they come in the pack with her often. I think the little sister doll’s name is kelly or kathy, and these little dolls that appear with the black barbies have all been featured as one of kelly/kathy’s friends at one time or another. this is mattell being cheap and trying to get rid of an overly produced product, but they are not being racists. LMAO

i know i used to hate when someone would buy me a white barbie or any other doll. i always returned it and got the black barbie. for the record, not all of the black dolls were barbie’s sidekick. i remember skipper (the teen) and christie (barbie’s friend), but i think there were others that weren’t specifically sidekicks as well.
i don’t find them ghetto… i wouldn’t exactly call playing a stringed instrument or painting a picture with bob ross “ghetto”… i don’t know why these 15 y/o girls have something to say about it. shouldn’t they be in HIGH SCHOOL and past the barbie phase anyway?
i really like what this lady did with this line. she seems to have good intentions by including the math/science, art, etc. trying to encourage diversity.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/venusinrapture/ venusinrapture

I don’t see what’s racist about the barbies. I don’t like the chain, but I wouldn’t necessarily be caught dead in most of barbie’s outfits whether they be on the black dolls or the white dolls. I see a violin, an easel, and … uh cheerleader barbie accessories. The whole issue with barbie goes above and beyond this line; people have been addressing the insane body proportions on barbies for years. Most of the articles on BP, especially the ones on Hello Beautiful, have absolutely no rhyme or reason to them, make no sense, and don’t say ish about anything. THIS IS ONE!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/KaliMaat/ KaliMaat

Well there are pluses and minuses to these dolls. The pluses are the beautiful faces and skin tones. Minuses babies with blonde hair and hair weave. Indoctrinating children from young to not appreciate their own hair texture isnt exactly helping our condition as afrikan ppl. However; its still one step up from the ‘white doll’ syndrome. So in this case Ill give credit for the appearance of ‘baby steps’-but then in turn say if real black ppl had control over media and entertainment we would have no need to step up from anything. But we cant expect much from a ppl who still have a slave mentality-so one step at a time.

White corp always have a puppet spokes person to pose as the creator of something but trust it is europeans who approve of and make suggestions of the image these dolls represent. No self respecting black person would have a doll with a chain of any kind around its neck-thats just the real. But again , I believe the doll itself is beautiful-we need to step up on the gear and hair.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/KaliMaat/ KaliMaat

Oh and whats up with the blue eyes, thats another problem i had with the doll. When we gonna keep it 100%? We need a black nation!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/naturalbeauty47/ naturalbeauty47

I like new black dolls. Wish they had them when I was little. Us blacks are always complaining about not seeing any real black barbie dolls well now you have them. But yet some of us are still complaining about hair colors and weave. Get over it. Some blacks are actually born with light colored hair and some actually do have naturally long thick hair. The white barbies all have long hair and not all white people do but you don’t hear them complaining. We always finding something negative to say. If they would have made the doll too ethnic, nappy hair, pink, red, or blue hair, gold chains, just straight hood you all would have a fit! So accept the doll cause its a major step from what they have had in the past. I will be buying my little sisters, niece, and god baby one for Christmas.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/arozendaghetto/ arozendaghetto

First off, I gotta say all these dolls are adorable. It’s wonderful to have a more diverse variety of ethnic dolls for young girls of color could identify with. I join the others in supporting this move. however, I have a bone to pick with all who were involved with creating, developing, manufacturing and distributing these dolls.

Why do all the dolls a baby in tow? These are suppose to be little girls playing with this stuff, right? It is also how they learn about their identity as a girl, realistic or unrealistic right? Sure there are a lot of teenage pregnancies, especially in urban neighborhoods but these little girls can play with the dolls without having to deal with the tiny tot that they want to CALL it the doll’s little sister. It’s funny how these “little sisters” look young enough to be these teenagers babies. There seems to be a hidden message in the packaging of these dolls to me. There implication that all teenage Black girls who live in the hood have a kid. Yes, I see there is an African American woman who manufactured it and super ^5 to her… but one who hasn’t read this artlcle would think so as they bring their little girl into the toy section and he or she sees the packaging of these “Ghetto Barbies”- a black teenager with a baby. They wouldn’t even realize the tots as their sisters. Also, chances are the sales might not do well either because of that.

I don’t know if all the doll has a tot with them which it seems that way, but if so maybe they should have some that doesn’t have a kid with them. Just like Barbie didn’t always have Skipper with her all the time.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/angelishot0/ angelishot0

She had good intentions… but bad outcomes. The accessories were a hell no… and the little kids/little sisters was cute if you listened/watched the video… I personally would not buy them for anyone I know for the negative sterotypes that I believe they display.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/38peace/ 38peace

Hello let me start off by saying these dolls are beautiful, you see i am an african american puppet maker, and i know first hand when you design something like this some black folks will feel uncomfortable, i rember i designed a young urban black puppet with short hair thick lips and broad nose did not make puppet look ugly at all, and some kid said to me why is his lips so big, and this black kids lips were bigger than than the puppets, I think that some black folks have fell into that trap of thinking that only white facial features are beautiful, and any black person who has these white facial features are beautiful too.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Innovative_Brother/ Innovative_Brother

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/baby1180/ baby1180

ok i am going to be a nice as i can be, but isit just me or is Mattel making fun of our RACE!! now first of all i don’t like the doll at all but who am I, I am just a Black woman who has issues RIGHT,WRONG. I feel like this is a misrepersentation of Women Of Color. All Black women or other women of color dont have BIG NOSES OR THICK CORSE HAIR, and all of us are not What You say CURVEY, some times we get confused because how the media and society labels WOMEN OF COLOR!! But i feel it is offensive and it is cruel and it should not be sold at all. I mean hell you already have girls thinking that BARBIE is the representation of the all American Woman, now you want to bring us in the mess by callling it GHETTO BARBIE! Now you tell me what the definition of GHETTO!!! tell that !!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DahCharmer/ DahCharmer

Why all the fuss, these are just dolls for crying out loud.. one set of dolls cant be used to represent any entire race and anyone who thinks that its just dumb. Ppl will forever have issues when they feel they are left out..when Barbie had there dolls white fat women complained about stereotyping beauty. They should have had these dolls along time.. hey throw in the asians, mexicans and some latinas dolls to, its about time. I’m sure if they were designed by a Caucasian they would be even a bigger stir up. The fact is things are always out there but its just people giving unnecessary misguided “associations & meanings” to them.

If people really don’t like the dolls, they won’t buy them. I will still buy the “Julia” doll that came out in the late ’60s that my mom bought for me. the “Julia” was the Barbie doll they made replicating Dianne Carol’s character in the first TV series featuring an African-American woman that had an honorable profession as a Nurse (not a “black mammy” maid) and she was a Widow with a small child. We were happy about that…What’s wrong now??..almost 40 years later and you Children are arguing about racism in the Barbie dolls of which we don’t have that much variety…I will buy them for my 6yr old daughter…She likes all color Barbies!!! Yes..I have a 6yr old daughter at 46 yrs old!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Reneenix/ Reneenix

OMG….these dolls are beautiful!!! I don’t understand WHY anyone would hate on these dolls? They look great. Who doesn’t know someone who looks like them? So one of the dolls has green eyes. I know someone with green eyes and light brown eyes. We’ve got to get over this notion that we all look a like. We come in different shades, different eyes, different bodies. We are beautiful and these dolls reflect that. They do different thinks like play the flute, violn, painting, etc.

I love that these dolls have full lips and full nose. How can people hate? How? Gold Star to Stacy McBride. She did her thing! I’m buying one for all of my God daughters…I have 4! Plus I want my set!

PS…which doll has blond hair and weave? Really? Come on…little girls like to comb hair. As for the “baby”…it’s the doll’s little sister. How about I need some of you to READ!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cestleon/ cestleon

Remove the chains. I’ve seen far more offensive. With a last name like Mootoo, I’d expect her to be into Soukous or Highlife before hip-hop anyway. People need to address REAL problems like black on black crime and such. If you don’t like that MATTEL, after all of the complaints, has made another BLACK/AFRICAN AMERICAN DOLL for blacks to squander their money on (because this is the ethnic group that is the most obsessed with consumerism) then don’t buy it! I think that it’s messed up that they didn’t introduce one originally since Barbies heyday was smack dab in the turbulent 60′s. Then again f**k Barbie. All she does is fill little girls heads with unrealistic aspirations and appeals to their sense of materialism! Now what’s up with no black HE-Man figures? Just kidding, I’ve got bigger fish to fry!

These dolls accurately reflect the eurocentric images that blacks themselves have adopted as
the standard of beauty. It can no longer simply be blamed on whites since black women are
willing to spend ridiculous sums of money on fake hair. Black people now accept that lighter skinned women are the most ‘beautiful’. We are the most whitewashed of all the world’s people.
While others embrace their uniqueness, we shun ours. Now you want to complain because a white

I’m glad they finally have a black doll. When I was growing up, there weren’t any, except my buddy doll. White dolls are diverse in what they wear, so why can’t our dolls?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SuzyQ38/ SuzyQ38

I think the dolls are gorgeous. They made them in different shades of color, and the clothes are cute. Some of the accessories are a bit much, but so what, there are some girls who love those types of accessories and some who don’t. The bottom line is not everyone can be pleased ALL THE TIME. As a white woman, I’ve never been happy with “traditional” Barbie because she is COMPLETELY unrealistic and I believe she gives young girls a complex about their bodies because of of them don’t have huge boobs and a flat butt (ie, ME! LOL!) They’ve made changes recently so she looks more normal, but that booty is still too flat! Memo to Mattel, NOT ALL WHITE GIRLS HAVE FLAT BOOTIES!! LMAO!!!

Seriously, if you don’t like the clothes or accessories, take them off and purchase different ones, don’t piss and moan about it just because YOU’RE not happy, as others may be. :)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/kojo2222/ kojo2222

no one should be upset with these dolls, because it is a reflextion of the image we have imposed on ourselves. after all, the dolls were designed by a black woman who simply made what she saw in her own neighborhood. if you don’t like what you see, then make a change in your coummunity by changing what your daughters imitate and see on tv. rapers have made billions from the glamourisation of street life, but you will never see any of them racing back to that way of life, or encouraging their own children to live a ghetto fabe life. i’ve read some of the comments left by members of black plant, and it saddens me that, mostly young girls, they don’t understand that how you look is how young men will treat you. when a male sees eye candy the first thing that comes to mind is how can i get a piece of YOUR!!! candy, not you. oh yeah, no one is going to see the small doll as her little sister unless its described on the packaging.

Either the woman that designed it has no taste whatsoever or she was manipulated by the white Product Design / Marketing folks at Mattel to make the doll look “more Black = “Ghetto”)

Come on now. Cheesy ghetto clothes and an overall image of project chic. Somewhat insulting at the least. How about an upscale doll so young Black girls can have something to aspire to. Some white chick (SuzyQ38) made a comment that the doll was not racist. My dear woman, your race/ethnicity invalidates your opinion. wigs and weaves are ancient African symbols of honor . so how can you say its euro-centric? white people emulate us you can see it in their court systems and Parliaments of Europe . I’m far from racist, but one thing i know from studying black and white culture is that alot of our (black people) habits, morals, scientific theories, rules of law, etc. were adopted by Europeans. you can even see it on our money

I am happy that designer is black. Had she been white. I would be pretty pissed. Also these dolls will probably sell pretty well which is the goal. I wouldn’t buy it. I would buy an Oprah Or First Lady Doll. What am I saying? I don’t play with dolls.

Oh Man!!!! Remember Brown vs. The Board of Education. All the little black children choice a white doll over a black one. Some decades later the same choice of a black doll vs. a white to black child and they still chose the white doll. It had nothing to do with hoochieism. It had everything to do with self image. My Point I don’t see much wrong with the barbies. I do know we have to give are children a excellent image of themselves from the inside out not the out side in.

I would have love to have one of those dolls when I was a girl. They’re cute.
    Alady5
PS Bady daddy Jamaal……. That is funny. We can’t get it twisted. Its always going to be something. No one can dictate who we can or can not be but sometimes I wonder if slavery is really over. Free your mind and your ass will follow.

    @Alady5;

We really just need total control over our own image and more importantly our own industries….’and the rest will follow. Not too much more complex than that. Mattel is still owned by europeans therefore the image is approved by them before its distributed for sale.

we cant win em all. i dont think their is anything ghetto or racist about these dolls. the woman that designed them did the best she could to create a product that benefits little black girls who need a toy that looks like them-i mean at least the dolls aint got big titties and big booties -now that would have been something to get pissed off about. the chain doesnt represent hip hop. hell if you dont like the chain dont buy the product or maybe remove it when you do buy it. any progress no matter how small is a big step in creating a move towards self empowerment. if anyone got a problem with the dolls-hell, talk to the designer to get her side of the story since she did it and produced it. the other dolls that come with it are apparently the little sister. rather than critisize the designer maybe give her some positive input and suggestions on creating another doll or set of dolls that are more fitting to what you want. another option is to create your own line of black dolls with black money-at least thats one way to cut out the white man

I love them! I think they are super cute. They all have their own individual style and beauty that’s reflective of African American people. Love the different skin tones, hobbies and interests. As far as the hair is concerned…. ALL BARBIES… (black, white or otherwise) have long flowing hair. There is nothing wrong with that. That’s what makes a Barbie… umm… a Barbie. Most women in general (again… black, white or otherwise) don’t naturally have hair like Barbie so that’s no different than what they’ve have done with all of their dolls.

I’m not offended at all. I remember when I was little getting a black Barbie with very little hair that was curly (like a blown out afro). Soon after, I got yet another black Barbie that was identical to the white one but just had brown skin. Neither one looked like me! I was disappointed.

I’d buy them! (and this is coming from an educated African American woman who has no tolerance for stereotypical implications of what black people should be)

For the rest of you people who are offended: Since you’re so super sensitive…This wasn’t your first… nor will it ever be your last time being offended. Sucks for you.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/elneda1_2luv/ elneda1_2luv

Not everything is racist I like the dolls and I would by them for my grandchildren and if anyone takes offence then don’t buy them for your family. We can’t please everybody and some people are negative no matter what is done for them. I like the Dolls go Mattel!!! and the fact you can change the hair very inventive because we know we like to change our hair more than we like to change our clothes:)

HAHAHAHA! Tyra wished her fore-head was that small! ha!

Anyways, I like this collection, ghetto or not, true to life or not, this is what the black women I see on t.v. and in the movies look like & I think the designer did a good job but merely touched the surface when it comes to our skin tones and hair textures though…
I’d get one for my nieces…hell, & my damn self too Sh!t they didn’t have this much variety when I was a child.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Xefina/ Xefina

I don’t see anything wrong with it…..I don’t understand people. People generally get all angry over stuff like this and smaller things……..If you really think about there are a lot of African american girls who have straight hair it may not be weave but perms and blow outs, and now lace wigs is just the same……..whats the big fuss…..sometime i swear people just love to argue about something they would find the little things to argue over. How about arguing over the act that everything that Obama says the media take it to another level when it’s innocent how about that?

mothers old enough to remember when they were little girls i am talking about the women who are now in the late 40′s and 50′s we did not have black dolls, we had dolls that were white. we had no dolls to identify with. No black barbie is not racism. come on people we do not have to fight stupid battles this is not one of them. Do we take a stand as our children’s schools like we should? do we go to PTA meeting like we should, do we teacher our daughters and grandaughters to tell little boys to keep their hands off in improper manners? these are the things we should be focusing on not a damn Barbie dolls. People let keep it together.!!!!!!!

The dolls are Beautiful… Big Butt… Little Butt… Big Boobs… Little Boobs. A Woman is a Woman. Or a Teenage is a Teenager no matter what Race… Africa America, Asian America, Hispanic American, Euro American and many many more. We are a diverse culture and in that case means mixed culture as well. That is the Beauty of America… These dolls are Teenagers, I myself have my oldest child 15 yrs older than my youngest… So is my oldest suppose to be ashamed of the youngest. He used to love to take his youngest sybling with him alot of times. In the video it says Sybling! It is the ignorant mind of some people to automaticly make it something negative. It is not negative. It is more of a teaching to family ties in my opinion. Its just filthy minds making it negative…

@ shaggakhan2009 – What a shameful soul you are. It’s ignorance like yours that keeps racism alive and well in our country. First and foremost, I don’t recall anywhere in my post saying the dolls were not racist, however, there were SEVERAL other posts from people of ETHNIC DESCENT who said they weren’t racist. I have the right to an opinion on racism just as much as anyone else. You sir, are ATTACKING ME BECAUSE I AM WHITE, IS THAT NOT RACIST???! Please refer to your dictionary and learn the DEFINITION OF THE WORD BEFORE YOU TOSS IT AROUND SO FLAGRANTLY. Better yet, since you obviously have no time to educate yourself on the proper use of the word, here’s the definition for you:

Racism: 1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

NOWHERE IN THIS DEFINITION DOES IT SAY THAT RACISM PERTAINS ONLY TO THOSE OF ETHNIC DESCENT. Whether YOU want to believe it or not, Caucasian is a RACE OF PEOPLE. So please keep your OPINION of what the word RACISM means to yourself until you learn the proper usage. Thank you………

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/fillnlonee/ fillnlonee

No I do not feel it is racist. White women where weave and were gold to. What will happen if a doll was made dark skin, wide nose, with nappy hair that comes with a perm. It is true, Black women where weave. I do not perfer it, but I do have a gold change around my neck. A lot of white dolls comes with make up. I think all white women can not go with out make up. But that is how things are.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/melissa_157/ melissa_157

But why give them straight hair? If you want young girls to have dolls that look more like them give them at least one version with nappy hair or braids. How many little girls (3 years old) have weaves or relaxers like that? Also how about changing the body structure below the neck too. How about some hips and booty? Not too many women are that flat

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shaska1980/ Shaska1980

No, I don’t think Ethnic Barbie is shetto or racist. Gosh you just can’t please people no matter what you do. We finally have dolls that reflect some of the black community, reality. No, not all black girls like hip hop and wear gold chains and weaves. However, a lot do! So these dolls look like the audiance of 106 and Park…and? They represent some of the youth. It’s time that they were reflected in Barbie world. We come in all shades, styles and forms. All young black girls don’t have fulls lips and hips either. I’m a light-skinned balck woman who wishes I had more hips and lips. lol Am I any less black? Absolutely not..
Bottom line, this is progress, not racist. If you think about it, white Barbie is a sterotype too, that doesn’t reflect all white girls. Let’s not forget all the ethnic Barbies through the years. I’ve seen mixed race Barbie, Asian, Latino…barbies with kinky-curly hair, wavy. So let’s not trip over this and look like a bunch of whiners. I agree with the earlier comment- we have a lot more important things to fuss over than this. If you want to get mad over something, lets get mad at all the double standard crap our first black President is dealing with every day. A laundry list is forming. I mean really…

Omg all you haters please STFU!!!

Doll makers can NOT make a doll that emulates all the different features of a damn race! OKAY? It’s not just YOU in the race. If you don’t have a big ass then chick I am sorry for ya!! They can’t sit there poppin’ out dolls with small hips, and big hips, and big lips and little lips, and big noses and little noses, and Fat dolls and skinny dolls. Just because 25% of ya’ll happen to be different! It’s not all about you! I was a child playing with a Barbie about 10 years ago and I did not have a choice of a black damn Barbie!

And Of course she got straight hair! A child is not a idiot and knows that the big one is older, and we all know that most of you push your child to get a relaxer, or give into your child wanting one, and then she will have straight hair too, so, oh, motha, effin, well, stop effin, complaining, People complain to damn much instead of doing productive things, and it’s damn well annoying. It’s a damn doll. if you gonna get offended over some crap like this, Well, then I’mma need you to sit down and rethink what being OFFENDED really was about 30-40 years ago, even longer then that.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/omarjazz19/ omarjazz19

Of course Mattel needed a Black woman to come up with this. europeans have always found a uncle tom ni**er to be the “whipping boy” for them so that we wouldn’t put the blame on them where it really belongs. They told you “black people sold you into slavery so you would blame them”.
“Colon powell was the reason for the war in Iraq.” “Preacher” is short for pre-reacher (the one they sent to pre-reach us for the whiteman)ect… ect…
Anywho..we keep falling for the same stupid tricks that they play on us generation after generation. Look, this is an “Image” (something used to teach) that we are talking about and when it comes to our children we better make DAM* SURE it’s accurate because if it is defective then everthing it produces after it will be defective also.THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS,LOOKOUT!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/rgoddess69/ rgoddess69

    Peace Family,

I look at these dolls and say about time. But I also say that we still have a way to go because anyone of us could have designed a doll and put the money in our community. White Barbie has done nothing for the self esteem of white girls. It has caused anorexia, bulimia and look at how many young girls want liposuction and what not because of this stereotypical image. When I first saw the little doll I thought it was supposed to be her daughter, since its supposed to be ghetto and all. And please, I know many Black women who perm their daughters hair as soon as their old enough because they are too lazy to properly train their hair. I’m Muslim, so I buy the dolls and make them Muslim garments and convert them to Islam for my daughters so that they truly look like them. For my Christian sisters I suggest you do the same. Look at this as a teaching moment, so that our girls know that you are not limited by what you wear and where you live. Im proud of the sister who designed them! Now lets right her with more suggestions on how to diversify this black woman!

You don’t know how much we black men hate weaves. There is nothing worse then choking off a piece of that yachk (in the morning).Or having to snatch a ball of it off the floor when we help clean the house, or seeing what looks like dead animals laying all over dresser and let’s not talk about the bathroom, what do you think is clogging up the drains YACHK HAIR. STOP IT!!
And to my (con-science)family.. our enemy is now fighting us on a metaphysical level more than ever, wasting our energy trying to bring “Cartoons” into reality will only keep us under their mind control. You may think it’s just an innocent toy, but to your enemy it is a weapon of gene-o-side
Remember the Cress Theory, The hand gun was always designed to be placed in our hands along with self-hate teachings. personally i think this weapon is more wicked because there is an economic component attatched to it that sustains them while we destroy our minds. Throw it down and step away!!

So every “Race” of doll always had a male counterpart who was white, Ken.

I like the fact that they have little sisters. that will show my daughter that her and her siblings has to stick together. She has to take care of her family. and if she wants to pretend that the little sister is the kid of the older doll I am fine with that also. When i was small my mom said that i would be a good mother because i took very good care of my dolls and today i have two happy and intelligent kids. 1st..It’s a dang doll people..I personally think they are cute and I wish I had them to play with when I was little..I remember they had a black barbie or two when I was growing up..But they had pointy noses and small lips just like barbie and only came in one complexion.. And I hardly played with her unless Barbie need a cruising buddy..If I had these back then I would probably purchase Grace cause she more closer to my skin-tone LOL..

2nd.. Barbie and her friends, ALL HAD LITTLE SISTERS, this is no different from in the 90s..Cause they had em then and Im not surprise they have em now..But I will admit me and my friends made Kelly, who was Barbie’s little sister, her daughter..But they are made to be the girl’s little sister..This is no worse when they came out with the pregnant Barbie..LOL..She had a baby lump, a baby and everything not to long ago..When they start doing that and don’t include a Ken like African American doll..Then complain..On the discussion of that they need to make a Black male barbie too lol..I never seen one of those..

Everybody talking bout realistically, well realistically everybody don’t have big boobs and flat butts and perfect skin..What next we gonna give barbie acne..Is Barbie gonna have stretch marks from her weight fluctuating from big to small as well..Is she gonna gain 15 pounds when she’s off at college..Is Barbie gonna come with a plastic surgeon as well..We gonna start making Barbies with health problems and mental illness now..Is barbie gonna come with physical and mental disabilities too.. If not then shut that ish up people..LOL..Its a Dam* doll people its not meant to fit what you look like..It’s a representation of what our community looks like..And the line of dolls just started..Give it time dang.. Besides, if you want a doll to look more like you then go out and make one..sh*t..Stop complaining about every little damn thing..

Now if Barbie had a 40, a pack o ‘Ports, and a Welfare Check hang n out her purse, then I would have a prob wit dat!! My truth is Ghetto is as Ghetto duz, struggle to survive. The reputation of Barbie is Excellence,Style, Independant, Very Wealthy, Socialable, and having 1 man in her life. Maybe the term Ghetto isn’t appropriate for the doll, perhaps she should have went for the term URBAN. And juz because a Black Woman created it dosen’t excuse the ignorance of the term GHETTO.HOOD iz GOOD!!!!!

Sometimes we Blacks over re-act on some issues. We wanted black dolls to be recognized in our image for a while and now that we have one, we complain. We need to step up to the plate on black on black crime, gang violence, police brutality and lack of education on our black youth.

I actually like the new ethinc barbies. I think that my daughter would choose these dolls over any other barbie doll. I believe that the people who are writing these hate messages are the people who hate themselves and who hate the african american culture and style. First yall wonna complain when they dont include us now yall wonna complain when they do…..? Thats a bunch of bull! There isn’t anything ghetto about these dolls. These dolls are stylish and beautiful.

The dolls dont look bad to me. I dont have any idea what the fuss is about on these dolls looking “ghetto”. The only thing I take issue with is all of the dolls have long, straight hair? Where is the diversity in doing that? Not all black females are into weaves. We rock locks, twists, braids, short styles, mo-hawks, etc. All of the dolls look the same. I guess they didn’t know that when they made the dolls to represent “real” females. I think alot of us need to see Chris Rock’s “Good Hair” when it comes to a theatre near in your town. Because we are missing not only the cultural implications of this mentality but the financial as well.

Ok first ppl betch about how its so hard to find black barbies, so when they get there own line ppl want to nit-pick at nonsence….

” Tyaine Danclaire, 15, of the Bronx, liked Trichelle’s straight, long hair because it looked like “a weave,” but she thought the idea “was sorta racist.” ”

    DF?????
Black barbies always had long straight hair why is it a problem now………And they have more then one with differnet hair styles….

i love the new barbies, i do not believe they are being racist in any way. I love their new outfits and their hairstyles. Now if Mattel barbie makers would have put the african american dolls in blonde hair and american eagle or something of that sort they would still be calling mattel racist, some people just dont know how to accpet change for the better and not the worst

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Deletha_J/ Deletha_J

I dont consider the barbies racist! Whoever consider these barbies racist are just pain sensitive and dont know what the hell racist means. I mean finally we get recognition via dolls and someone always has to turn this positive project into something negative. This is blown way out of proportion. Come on now

people always wanna make it black, white, and bulls**t. there is nothing racist about them dolls. if you look at majority of the african american culture as a whole. the pre teens and the teenagers, this is what they represent. go on any myspace, moco, bp, fb page, and i guarantee you, when these kids get on pics and cam, these dolls bare a uncanny resemblence to them. i think the dolls are cute as well. Good Job Barbie. :-)

i think its fine the white barbie go the same type of accessories. the only thing that bothers me is that with the black dolls the littles sister liked like there child at fist glance. i dont think its anything tht the company is doing its just my mind set. when i see barbie and skiper i think sisters. when i see trichelle and janessa i think teen mother or there mother is single so trichelle got to pick up the slack. is that wrong of me?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DEELOVE09/ DEELOVE09

the dolls dont look GHETTO and why does everythign has to be about RACE? @dutchesof3 I THOUGHT THE SAME THING UNTIL I WATCHED THE VIDEO and the comments the girls made they prob was dressed jus like the dolls when they were interviewed. SMH.

i want 1 dey r really pretty i like da barbie i only like barbies of color . when & where can i get 1 @

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/itzmissbrown/ itzmissbrown

What makes this racist is that it is ONLY THE BLACK BARBIE that is dressed like this, if all races had the same outfits it would be O.K. because if not they are stereotyping (and that is sooooo not cool!) Plus you can buy clothes separately anyway so why not just sell them as accessories? Actually I am not sure why she just can’t wear what the White, Latina, and Asian Barbies wear…….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ThatGirlNitra02/ ThatGirlNitra02

THIS IS NOT A RACIST DOLL OMG THERE ARE SO MANY IGNORANT PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD! WE ALL KNOW THAT SOME OF THE SAME OUTFITS THE DOLL IS WEARING,WE HAVE SEEN FEMALES THAT ARE BLACK, NOT ALL BUT SOME, WEAR THE SAME THING! GO TO THE CLUBS, OR PARKS ON THE WEEKEND OR THOSE BARBECUE COOKOUTS OR BEACH PARTIES AND IN SOME MUSIC VIDEOS…….SAME OUTFITS, AND D*MN IT’S A DOLL! I GUESS IT’S RACIST TOO AT CHRISTMAS WHEN MOST BLACK PEOPLE PREFER THEIR CHILD GET A BLACK DOLL INSTEAD OF THE WHITE ONE, ESPECIALLY IF THE DOLL COMES IN ONLY WHITE ALOT OF BLACK PARENTS GET UPSET IF THEY CANT FIND A BLACK ONE! THATS CRAZY TOO BECAUSE A DOLL IS A DOLL IT’S ALL PLASTIC, AND SHOULDNT MATTER WHAT RACE/COLOR IT IS OR THE CLOTHES IT HAS ON………GROW UP PEOPLE BECAUSE WE HAVE ACTUAL RACIST ISSUES STILL EXISTING TODAY THAT ARE MORE SERIOUSLY EFFECTING BLACK PEOPLE; WATCH THE NEWS AND YOU WILL SEE.

i like it…..how can you not be happy, why find a negative angle?
i remember growing up in the 60/70′s playing with GI Joe’s, the life-like hair and the kung fu grips. I had 10 of them, the dark-haired, the blond, the red head and the black-afro American. they were all equal. if people find a necklace racist, then i will write a letter to Mattel to take the dolls away. i find this very ungrateful, if you’re going to be so negative. it sounds like black people will never appreciate anything.

To those young ladies who feel these dolls are racist, more emphasis should be put on the stereotypes we portray and our intraracial predjudices. We as a race in general tend to gravitate towards ignorance because of the lack of knowledge of self. Be more worried about the fact that what we portray in public, what we glorify, and how we act is more damaging than your negative reactions to this so called ethnic Barbie. I think the dolls are beautiful, and they are depictions of style and culture that is displayed in the general black population and it’s communities. Would you be satisfied with a Madea Doll instead? Would you have a problem with the dolls if they were simply colored with different complexions, and have no accurate physical characteristics or black features? Yes indeed, the young ladies that I see walking the streets of New York everyday dress this way. Though it may not be all of them, it’s an overwhelming majority of them that dress this way, a black woman created these dolls not a white woman. Fish for an education instead of negative, misinformed blind opinions due to your ignorance. Ms. Matoo age 15, from Manhattan it figures, where exactly is your geographical location and who do you hang out with? That’s bad to not have a clue about who you are at such a young age. You need to sit down and talk to a seasoned black woman that’s been around. Your sociological view is off young lady. Buckwheat, and Madea as well as some Hip Hop artists are modern day stereotypes and coonish in the way they act. They don’t need clothes to portray that.

I am of the older generation were the only doll my parents could find was a black doll. I don’t see what the complaints arre about. Everyone complained years ago when we didn’t have black dolls or when the dolls that were eventually created were black faced with nappy hair. But has anyone ever thought before they started creating ethnic dolls; our ancestors created bleack dolls out of cloth and cotton, drawing faces on them. I can’t understand what wrong with our society of african american. They complain whenthey don’t have and they complain when they do have. Futher more I see nothing wrong with these dolls. It could be worse. They could have created the hair of heeps wool with the hair sticking up, wearing raggedy clothes. Find something else to complain about. These dolls are no different from the way they dress the caucation dolls. I’ve never raised my daughter to identify with any doll as being different.
