I’m glad to see that large health/beauty and fashion conglomerates are finally using African-American models as spokespersons. I was reading InStyle magazine today and saw Kerry Washington in a full-page, four-color ad for Movado. Movado epitomizes understated tradition and class. These companies are beginning to realize that African-Americans are large consumers of merchandise, and that the merchandise does not have to be ostentatious (i.e., Louis Vitton or Versace) for us to purchase. In the past, they did not use blacks as models, nor did they target blacks demographically as potential consumers of their goods. Things are changing, and that’s a good thing!
