I know it seems scary at first, but going natural can be a very liberating experience, especially when it comes to your time and money.

I was also very fearful making the transition from perms and hot combs to wearing my hair in its natural state.  It seems uncontrollable and just too much to be bothered with, plus losing some of the hair that took you SOOO long to grow in the first place. Trustme when I say, I’ve done it all. So instead of you having to do the field work on your head, here are a few tips for moving processed to perfect:

Starting Off

When you are 100% sure you make the leap into the natural pool, you generally have two options: grow it out or cut it off.

1. If you are of a bold persuasion, cutting it off may feel like starting from scratch.

But if you’re like me, and desired some length during my transformation, then you must keep your hair very conditioned and place it in simple styles to take the pressure off of your hair and minimize breakage. This is not to say that you won’t have any breakage because you definitely will. Some styles you may want to take into consideration:

- Braids

- Straw Sets

- Sisterlocks

- Extensions (specifically sewn-ins)

2. Wear a silk cap, scarf, or sleep on silk pillows to maintain moisture in your hair and minimize friction and frizz.

3.  NEVER EVER comb your hair when it’s dry!!!! Your hair will go into breakage overload! Comb your hair using a wide tooth comb when it is soaking wet and dripping with conditioner. The water and conditioner minimize tangles and helps promote healthier hair.

4. Trim your hair at least once every three months to avoid having lots of splits ends with no hair to show for it!

For tips of the trade, check this site out! It got me through some of my panic.

too funny…yeah u kinda need to look n the mirror b4 walking out the house with a blonde wig on, or think b4 buying a 24pc pk of hair that looks like a bag of skittles! the contacts yeah totally agree…that is not cute. natural hair is best because it makes ur hair stronger and healthier, and it makes it GROW so then u wont need the wigs and weaves and such and such…

i don’t know if i agree with the self-hate thing in every case, but yeah it’s true sometimes. i think the reason i permed for so long is b/c it’s what i was used to and had been conditioned to see it as the only way.

i finally decided to stop in april. feb 27 was my last relaxer (i’m a college student, times is hard! hence the 2 month period) and cut off the straight hair in july. i’m soooo happy with my decision. it’s def not as hard to manage as one might think, and there are some really cute styles you can do with natural hair.

i also agree with the blonde wigs (highlights, maybe. whole wig, not cute.) and blue contacts (not everyone can pull it off).

PiMpInShawTy_08, it will get easier trust me :). You hair just has to be “trained” from the relaxer that’s all. A lot of people make an attempt to go natural but get frustrated from the process of “stripping” you hair from the relaxer and go right back to relaxing their hair all over again (lol). I was “conditioned” too (many people have been just because of fads/trends etc.). Not a big deal. I had a jeri curl when they were in and wanted a relaxer because I so hate my naturally curly hair. However, in 1995 I decided not to perm my hair again and it has been 14 PLUS years now. I am from Michigan and left Michigan and moved to Florida and just knew that I would have to go back to a relaxer due to the humidity here but lo & behold I managed. Our hair does adapt.

Although I’m glad they showcased natural hair, where are the pics of black women with highly textured, coil-y hair. The majority of black women have highly textured coils not curls and waves. I guess i should just be content that they even mentioned natural hair. *shrugs*

I love being natural. It was the best decision that I ever made. Relaxers broke my hair off in a bad way. I always wanted long hair but I hated weaves and desired for that hair to be my very own. I gave up. I cut all my hair off one summer and let the warm gentle breezed caress my scalp. I never looked back and I never will. It was so liberating. But my hair is highly textured, kinky, coarse and cottony. I had to learn to work with it. It was definitely trial and error. But I absolutely love it and will never put another chemical in my hair ever again.

i agree with Darealreckless…Black Women need to stop with the hideous weaves, especially blonde. Check out my page…oh yeah…I do practice what I preach. People tell me, I’m a rare breed I go to the barber every week to keep my hair shaped and tapered. Many people get brainwashed into thinking long hair is the s*&%…NEWS FLASH…i’ve had hair past my shoulders back in the 70′s..and yesssss, grown straight from my roots, not some Yaki bag or grown from women of other cultures getting paid to cut their natural straight hair off to sell it to any bw who will purchase it and sew it into her own hair….no matter if the color/texture don’t even match. lol The weaves/wigs today have turned into a full-blown circus and colored contacts.

All of these mixed race chicks! Please show me someone with kinky hair like Jill Scott or India Arie, among others, who define and embrace their darkness and are “dark, nappy, and happy.”
