What do you spend most time on when preparing for a date? Your hair? Makeup? Hot shoes? Buying a new dress which shows off your figure? I am willing to bet that you spend a lot more time doing your hair than you do focusing on your smile.

Well, it turns out that we should be focusing on improving our smile rather than spending unnecessary hours fussing about a new dress, as a survey conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation has found that a smile is the second most important feature that people assess when determining attractiveness.

Female First noted that a smile was rated as the most important feature by 56% of respondents, closely followed by faces at 53% and eyes, 51%. Dress sense, body shape, hair and height were also measured, with the latter bringing up the rear on 25%.

Interestingly, it was a non-physical attribute – personality – which was the clear winner of the survey, with 90% of respondents rating this human attribute most important when it comes to attraction. These results are reiterated in another similar survey conducted by Allure Magazine, which also found that women are more attracted to a man’s face and smile than to his height or body type.

The Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr. Nigel Carter, explained why we love a smile: “The survey is a great reminder that we should be giving greater attention to our teeth… because it gives us the confidence to smile, which makes a major difference to our relationships, careers and overall image.”

He continues to say: ‘It takes 43 muscles to frown, yet it only takes 17 to smile. A simple smile can make others feel at ease around you and can be a powerful show of emotion, yet not everyone has the confidence to do so… The results of the survey show even though many of us aren’t happy with our teeth and do avoid smiling because of their appearance, we’re still attracted to the opposite sex by a simple smile.”

So there you go, it turns out, all it really does take is a smile! To steal a line from Mother Teresa: “We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.”
