When it comes to societal norms, one thing that I have never quite grasped is why it is largely socially unacceptable for men to take care of their bodies-inside and out. I am thoroughly convinced that one of the reasons that women, in some circumstances, do not end up with men that they are happy to be with is because some women really don’t know what they want in a man. On one hand you say, I want a “manly man” who exhibits all of the macho images in the media. Then you turn around and denigrate those men who do dress nicely and take care of themselves in special ways. You leave men to wonder, “which is it?” What I find even more curious is that some women who say that they want a “manly man” feed into this stereotype.

What I have never quite grasped is why any woman would want to be with a man who is less than clean, neat and well put together? Someone, somewhere has come up with a list of items that “manly men” are not to engage in. And it seems like every day the number of “unmanly” things increases. To date, here is just a small list of what women have told me manly men should not do:

-Pluck or manage their eyebrows

-Shave their underarm hair or chest hair

-Get a facial, pedicure, or massage

-Use chap stick on their lips

-Applying lotion daily

-Have soft hands

-Dress nicely

-Smell nicely

-Eat a salad (yes!)

The list could certainly go on, but you understand what I am getting at. Now, ladies, close your eyes and think for a moment about the “manly man” who is a result of not taking care of himself by doing none of these things…

I will pass on plucking my eyebrows and shaving under my arms…. lol… My hands are in between soft and rough, Chapstick, carmex, is a NECESSITY, all the rest is me all day…. And I am a VERY manly man…. I even get my nails manicured and this was at the advising of a woman I once dated, although my mother took me to get my first manicure when I was about 15. It is now part of my regular grooming as well as maintaining a fresh haircut…

I agree, many women don’t know what they want and the things on this list are more or less things a bad boy wouldn’t do, not a manly man.

Ladies if your man doesn’t own at least one outfit to attend church in or a suit for the unfortunate funeral that is probably not a Manly man…

Most MEN love to look nice, we just can’t hit the boutiques like the ladies as most mens clothing is expensive. Cheap suits, look cheap in most cases and our BLACK OWNED mens clothing lines were not made with the “Working Man” in mind. In other words it’s not priced in his budget, yet many people still find the money or the booster to get the gear they need… Some of the more popular clothing lines were not designed with black body types in mind…. Case and point… I love The RL Polo lines but I CANNOT wear the khakis or the jeans they make because I have a big azz for a man. The pants and slacks just don’t wear very well. This can make an absolutely fresh outfit look like trash…

Fellas also need to buy themselves a variety of shoes not just sneakers and tim’s… Care of your feet is essential and many black youth are not taught to take care of them properly… Any serviceman or woman can probably relate to how wearing the same shoes day in and day out can be murderous on your feet… Change your shoes DAILY, DAILY, DAILY… I can not stress this enough just how important this is…. Allow your shoes to thoroughly dry before wearing them again…. once you are home for the day/evening change your socks or go barefoot…. Allow your feet to breathe every now and then and if you sleep in socks like I do, make sure your feet have dried before putting them on …. Much of being a MANLY MAN is really basic hygiene and ladies, if you go about it the right way most fellas will adhere to your higher standard of HYGIENE… Yes there is gonna be the dude who says thats some chick shyt, but he does not know any better, be patient and take him to the spa for his birthday and see if he b***hes about it AFTER the session…..

I like a clean, well kept man, but not a prissy ass metrosexual. I think mani/pedi’s are great for men, especially if they are on their feet alot. The eyebrow, armpit, chest and leg grooming is a bit much for me. If I wanted to lay next to something smooth as a woman I’d become a lesbian. I like my man to be a man and to feel like a man, he just doesn’t need to be scaly. LOL!

as long as dude is clean, not ashy, and neat in his own style i am fine with him. he just needs to be comfortable in his own skin and not look like he was playing in flour or like he was getting ready to fry himself because he uses too much oil, lol.
