The Power of Rape and Sexual Assault

Rape. Does the word send a chill down your spine? It’s cold. Hard. Rough. The worst part of rape is that it usually has nothing to do with sexual gratification; it relates more to power.

It hardly phases us when big, powerful politicians and the like are swept up into some kind of sex scandal. It’s almost as if we expect it. Elliot Spitzer, Bill Clinton, Anthony Weiner, Dominique Strauss-Kahn–it seems to be a trend.

The latest man of power to have the finger pointed at him isn’t a political big shot, he’s a rapper who recently released his debut album, Finally Famous. What an interesting album title because now that Big Sean is finally famous, it seems he’s ready for celebrity scandal right of passage.

Allegedly, Big Sean and Willie Hansboro were both accused of sexual misconduct from a female concert goer a few days ago. The two were charged with misdemeanor counts of forcible touching, unlawful imprisonment and sexual abuse and eventually released on $500 bail.

Where there are allegations, there are two sides to a story. Usually the victim has a hard time being vocal about their allegations because of shame, guilt or the fear that they won’t be believed. Being sexually assaulted by a public figure of any sort is a slippery slope. Coming out about your allegations could make you look like an opportunist–using your allegations to gain recognition. So there’s torture in opening up and accusing the person that hurt you. No one man should have all that power in the palms of their groping hands.

Being a celebrity usually yields a ton of “Get Out Of Jail Free” cards, but just because you feel you have the power, doesn’t mean you should abuse it by abusing women sexually. Sex is beautiful between two mutually attracted lovers–it’s damn near spiritual. But when a good thing goes bad, everyone loses their power. The victim will forever feel like a victim and the aggressor loses clout. Once power is abused, it becomes evil.

There are a lot of issues.

When powerful men sexually assault women, they also will threaten either the victim’s life or the lives of her close family members or friends.

There is also the issue that some people are raised to think that no one can or should ever tell them no.

Add to that the fact that some people can’t see the difference in porn and reality.  Just because you saw a PAID actress enjoy being choked and beaten during sex in a porno doesn’t mean you should do that in real life.

Even when there is evidence, i.e. in the Strauss-Kahn case, the world is still very patriarchal.  The Strauss-Kahn case has the added issues of race and class level.

Rape is the worst crime because th victim has to live with the burden or ridicule and attack.

Often people are quick to run to the defense of the rapist and ignore the victim as if being raped is no big deal or she lying.

Some fool’s exaclty say  ”she asked for it” or “that’s what she gets for being sexy”.

There is little justice for the victims.

Rape and having consensual sex are two totally different topics.

Women have a right to enjoy sex without being label as hoes.

Women have a right to not live in fear of being raped.

No one wants or deserves to be raped.

You missed my point I see, but I forgive you…

MY POINT is why does HB have to perpetually force the tones of SEX day in and out to the minds of black women?   I’ll say it AGAIN…

One article says ‘liberate yourself! go out and buss a nutt ladies! get it girl!”

Then the next article says ‘Poor poor women of the world…”

NEITHER type of article speaks of wisdom, knowledge or empowering…..THAT IS MY POINT…Either we are portrayed as VICTIMS or DICK HOUNDS……

i believe some artists think it’s ok to take it their because they are on the rise to fame or famous already.. they feel like your the groupie and you know you want it.. they need to start acting accordingly not everyone wants to be or feel like a piece of meat..

Rapist usually attack women they “know of” either date rape, a neighbor, aquaintance, classmate, or co-worker.
This is VERY true. I know.

Darkness automatically means evil or mean.  That why his hand is so dark.  The media wants to project that black man and poor defenseless less than black woman.  Underlying racism at it’s best.

AHHH, shut up.  Men are molested and hit all the time.  Whether it’s touching /rubbing his chest or punching him in the shoulder; it’s just never reported and even if it were, the victim would be laughed out of town.  So much for equality.

For your ignorance to illustrate itself so openly is just a sign or how deep your hate is for Black Men. If you try not to speak to them or do not speak to them then all likelihood points to the fact that you do not know any Black Men. That being the case, you have no right to speak on which you don’t know. I would wish you the same in reciprocation, however considering my penchant for good will to all, I will wish you an education and an eye opening event because in all probability, you will find another “man” that will do the very same that you say Black Men do. Your lack of intelligence is truly insulting to those who know better.

    Very well put.

Well, considering that this website has had a history of divisive tactics portraying Black Men as users and abusers and Black Women as less than deserving of any kind of love, it is not surprising that one would find such innuendos placed within seemingly innocuous illustrations. If it were truly to speak the real story, history has time and again proven that it has been white and asian males that have used rape as a weapon and form of torture/control. I think that it is funny and saddening considering they are the two males that are more often than not placed on a pedestal in this society. It has only been recently in times have Africans and/or African-Americans imitated said acts.

I abhor rape and all forms of violence against women. There is a double standard when it comes to domestic violence, but this is neither the place nor the time. I will conclude with my closing thought that, it would be wise to keep oneself guarded while out and about, male or female. It would be also advisable to learn a martial art for self defense purposes.
