Shine Awards: Best Display Of Sisterly Support
1. Toni, Trina, Towanda, Tamar and Traci (The Braxton Sisters)
Convincing the honchos at WEtv to give them a show is one of the best business moves Towanda, Trina, Toni, Tamar and Traci Braxton could have done for themselves. The world was already familiar with Toni Braxton but fans also fell in love with the people who helped mold the megastar into the woman she is today via Braxton Family Values. Despite the drama each sister is dealing with in her personal life—from divorce to infertility to arguing with each other—it’s clear that they love and place their sisterhood first. They go to family therapy to sort out issues and grudges they may have with each other but they also go to war with anyone who disrespects their clan, even if it’s an out of pocket husband.
2. Tia & Tamera
Tia and Tamera are twins but their personalities are nothing alike, as viewers discovered on their eponymous TV show, which airs on the Style Network. One of the most endearing things about the Mowry sisters is that they are down-to-Earth. They’re two women navigating careers, motherhood and maintaining a healthy sisterly relationship. They don’t always get along but they understand that family comes first and despite any setbacks, if they keep communication open and continue to respect their bond, they can overcome anything. It’s a life lesson that everyone can stand to see reinforced on a consistent basis.
3. Mary Mary
Tina and Erica Campbell are so close that they coincidentally married men who have the same last name and their children are close in age. The gospel duo’s reality show focused on a new phase in their careers as they try to expand their fan base but also manage their busy personal lives, which includes small children who need their mommies around. The example they set is that Christians don’t have to be perfect but faithful. The Campbell sisters know how to have fun and keep it classy in everything that they do. Maybe it’s the “God in them” that their fans love so much, which is why their show will be returning to WEtv for a second season.
4. Venus & Serena Williams
Whenever one is slaying competition on the tennis court, the other isn’t far behind. They’re always at each other’s matches, even when one gets knocked out of the same tournament. That’s the type of sisterly support that sets an example not just for blood sisters but also for women who are close friends. They support each other despite feeling down about their own disappointments and never let their own feelings outshine the other in a true display of humility. They’re confident and take no prisoners in everything they do—not just on the court but when it comes to their businesses as well.
5. Kim, Khloe & Kourtney (The Kardashian Sisters)
Like with most big families, anyone who loves one has to take the whole package. That’s how it is with the Kardashian Sisters. Khloe is the tell-it-like-it-is feisty sister who is constantly calling Kim and Kourtney out on their shady dating choices and also gives them relationship advice when they need it. Kourtney is organized and anal, which is still sometimes necessary, but when her boo Scott suffers because of it, Kourt’s sisters help to talk him off the ledge, ultimately always preserving his relationship with Kourtney and their kids. Meanwhile, Kim is like the Elizabeth Taylor of the bunch. She falls in love fast and is constantly “in love.” Kim’s sisters don’t like that type of behavior but they’re always there for her when things don’t work out. However, this time around, all seem to be in harmony with Kanye West, who even has Khloe’s hard to come by approval—unlike previous suitors. It must be nice to have people in your corner to keep you grounded and focused. That’s how the Kardashians get down.
