1. Emayatzy Corinealdi
The breakout star of Ava Duvernay's "Middle Of Nowhere," Emayatzy Corinealdi delivered a beautiful, complex performance of a woman in transition in her first lead role. The 32-year-old has won a Gotham Award and was nominated for Indie Spirit and NAACP Image awards for her performance in the Sundance hit. We expect to see more of this amazing actress on the big screen in 2013.
2. Lion Babe
Dubbed a cross between Erykah Badu and Rihanna, Vanessa Williams' daughter, Jillian Hervey aka Lion Babe released her first single "Treat Me Like Fire" in late 2012 and is on pace to making a name for herself in the music industry. The R&B singer uses lioness images to showcase her strength and elasticity as a woman.
3. Tamar Braxton
Tamar stole the show in "Braxton Family Values" and made every woman feel her pain and struggle in her new single "Love & War." It took only 24 hours for Tamar Braxton's single “Love & War” to reach the number one spot on iTunes and is still slaying in 2013. 2013 feels like it will be a bold new chapter in Tamar.com's life.
4. Damon Wayans Jr.
If you're born into the Wayans family, you better be funny! If you watch Damon Wayans, Jr., who plays Brad Williams on ABC's breakout comedy Happy Endings, you know he definitely inherited the Wayans comedic gene. The handsome son of funnyman Damon Wayans definitely has the gift for joke-telling each week on the sitcom as we get so see him balance those beer chugging bro moments, with sensitive honey-do qualities. Wayans, Jr., who got his start with a role in his father's 1994 superhero spoof, Blankman also served as a writer and actor in his father's Showtime sketch show, The Underground and also starred in the dance movie parody Dance Flick. We definitely expect to see more from this hottie in 2013.
5. Jessie Ware
Jessie is a British singer-songwriter best known for her 2012 single "Wildest Moments." The 28-year-old Londoner says she conceives her elegant R&B songs by visualizing high school gymnasiums filled with balloons, bunting, pheromones and expectation. If you're a fan of Sade, you'll love Jessie!
If there's an artist you want to watch in 2013, AlunaGeorge is THE one! Aluna's vocals have been described as "almost child-like voice" as well as being called "sugar sweet" and "emotionally soulful and heartwarming too."
7. Meagan Good
Meagan Good has it all...beauty, handsome husband and a lead role in NBC's new hit "Deception." The actress who appeared in such films as Eve's Bayou, You Got Served, Biker Boyz, and Deliver Us from Eva is making moves in 2013. For decades there were no black female leads on any major network dramas until ABC's hit show "Scandal" and Meagan is making history with her role as a detective Joanna Locasto on the NBC drama. Good says the show is so much fun for her because it has a little something for everyone: "It's awesome. It's definitely a change, working every day and being [the star]," says Good. "I feel like I'm becoming better at my craft. I love the character. I love that I get a chance to do everything -- from action to drama, love triangle, it's a family drama, it's a procedural. You get your creative fix." Meagan is definitely having a moment!
8. Rita Ora
Rita Ora burst onto the music scene in 2012, when she released her debut album, 'Ora' which debuted at number one in the UK. It also spawned three number-one singles "Hot Right Now", "How We Do (Party)" and "R.I.P." which made Ora the artist with the most number-one singles on the UK Singles Chart in 2012. The Roc Nation's blonde bombshell individuality is effortless and unique and it looks like she's finally found her groove that will showcase her talents in a different light in 2013. We can't wait to see what she has in store for us.
9. Quvenzhané Wallis
Best known for her leading role as Hushpuppy in the critically acclaimed drama "Beasts of the Southern Wild," for which she became the youngest actress ever to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress, Quvenzhane Wallis will be on your screen in years to come. Her next role is the upcoming movie "Twelve Years a Slave," which also stars Paul Giamatti, Brad Pitt, and Michael Fassbender. Not bad company to be in for a 9 year-old.
10. Angel Haze
As a rapper, you know you've made it when you're featured in the New York Times Arts section! After signing a contract last summer with Universal Republic Records just three weeks after her first set of songs, “Reservation,” was released for free on the Internet and drew critical praise, Raykeea Wilson aka Angel Haze, is on her way to becoming a household name.
11. LeToya Luckett
One of the original members of the top selling R&B group Destiny's Child, with whom she won two Grammy Awards, LeToya Luckett is set to guest star in this season of "Second Generation Wayans" as the mother of Craig Wayans' child. Fans of the singer will get to see a different side of Luckett as she gets a little ratchet in this new role.
12. Chadwick Boseman
Up-and-coming actor Chadwick Boseman plays Jackie Robinson in "42", a biopic about Robinson joining the Brooklyn Dodgers and breaking pro baseball’s color barrier. Boseman has mostly worked in television, and has appeared on Persons Unknown, The Express, and Lincoln Heights. His other television credits include appearances on Law & Order, Third Watch, and All My Children. The Howard University grad may not be a household name just yet, but this role may just be the one that puts him over the top!
13. Coco Jones
Teen singer and actress Coco Jones, best known for her role on the Disney Channel movie "Let it Shine" sang at her kindergarten graduation and has never looked back. The 14 year-old loves to sew, work out, swim, bike ride, surf the web and shop with her friends. Who would this young star like like to work with the most in the future? A duet with Justin Bieber or Mindless Behavior. She plans on going to college, but will likely take online classes so that she can continue to pursue her dream of performing.
