On Zoe & Nina: Rosie Perez, Emayatzy Corinealdi Chime In On The ‘Colorism’ Controversy

Just recently, “Avatar” actress–Zoe Saldana– was tapped to star as Nina Simone in the Cynthia Mort-directed biopic of the late jazz-singer.  Mary J. Blige was first cast for the role and after rumored years of preparation dropped out. Contrary to the wishes of  Nina’s only daughter, Simone, the Latina and fair-skinned Zoe was chosen to fill the role. Since, much controversy has arisen  and the director (who is white), questioned.

We caught up with some of the leading ladies of color in Hollywood at the Urbanworld Film Festival to get their thoughts on the drama. After hearing their thoughts, one thing is clear–we should support women actresses of color. As Rosie Perez told us: “If you have something to say, don’t say it against our own, say it against the system!”
