1. Best Off-Screen reality TV Initiative: Kandi Burruss
Kandi Burruss is a unique reality star because she had fame and fortune before appearing on Real Housewives of Atlanta, due to her successful run as a singer, songwriter and boutique owner. However, Kandi used Bravo’s RHOA as a platform to sharpen her business acumen by expanding her empire beyond music. Kandi has landed a spinoff reality special entitled The Kandi Factory, where she turned competitors with mediocre talent into overnight pop stars, as well as a line of sex toys called Bedroom Kandi. Anyone who watches RHOA knows that Kandi has a high “freak number,” so she teamed up with popular sex toy company, OhMiBod, to help create devices that would inspire closet freaks and people who are out in the open as well, to “love themselves” a more. Award-winning products in the Bedroom Kandi line include massagers, bullets, vibrators and more. Business must be booming because Kandi has expanded Bedroom Candy to an at home consulting business where enterprising individuals can host their own parties and turn a profit by selling the goods. 2. Best Display of Sisterly Support: Tia & Tamera
Tia and Tamera are twins but their personalities are nothing alike, as viewers discovered on their eponymous TV show, which airs on the Style Network. One of the most endearing things about the Mowry sisters is that they are down-to-Earth. They’re two women navigating careers, motherhood and maintaining a healthy sisterly relationship. They don’t always get along but they understand that family comes first and despite any setbacks, if they keep communication open and continue to respect their bond, they can overcome anything. It’s a life lesson that everyone can stand to see reinforced on a consistent basis. Words By: Starrene Rhett Rocque
3. Best Self-Image Makeover: Nene Leakes
Viewers have noticed a more low-key Nene Leakes on the current season of Real Housewives of Atlanta. That’s probably because “she has arrived.” The reality TV diva made her mark by going off on cast mates—not just on RHOA, but also on Celebrity Apprentice—and generally being cantankerous. However, now that she’s acting professionally—with stints on Glee and The New Normal under her belt—she’s calmer and appears more refined. She even traded in her sometimes short, sometimes long dark hair for a bolder blonde short cut. Words By: Starrene Rhett Rocque
4. Best Use Of Star Power: Gabby Douglas
Gabrielle Douglass saw her dreams come true at the 2012 London Olympics, and has since continued to live an exemplary life. The accomplished Olympic gold medalist returned to the United States and found courage to share her passion for the sport, detailing the sacrifices her mom made in order for her to become the champion she is today. She also revealed that on her journey toward gymnastics stardom, she encountered bullying and negativity that could have thwarted her goals. The haters obviously didn’t succeed and nowadays, there’s no telling where Gabby will end up next—from TV appearances and cameos, to public speaking, this is only just the beginning.
