weave-childWe have nothing against weaves, but seriously does a 3-year old need a weave? In a recent episode of Toddlers and Tiaras, three-year-old Kayleigh looks like she’s having the (most painful) time of her life as she gets a weave for an upcoming pageant.Take a look:

Que Linda…… i mean all the lil girls black white spanish whatever they get hair pieces and wigs put on mostly its done just for more fullness .. s**t they even get fake teeth .. so i guess it is what it is .. at that age most lil girls are just happy seeing their hair straighten whether its their own or not.

This is not new. I saw a 3 or 4 year old with her mother with a full head weave, in a bob and china bangs. If the goal is to fill a child up with low self esteem then they are being more successful in this area than any other. I wish people would stop pushing these issues onto our children.

While girls get wigs and such, but they are not as invasive as black folks getting it done. White people get clip-ons and add ons, or just wigs all together. I saw that shiite you black chicks do, that’s unsanitary and really involved. I feel sorry for these young girls who have to grow up this way with these women of the world today. I know half of you posters are doing this to your kids as we speak too.

The little girl’s hair is still natural so that’s a good thing. I guess this makes sense if she is a prolific pageant contestant. Better that than to ruin her own beautiful natural hair underneath. And it was a reasonable length. She got the Hicks Edges. Awesome stuff. Only thing to tame my hair into afro puffs. And judging from the length of the girl’s hair, it looks like they don’t leave it in too long and are careful. But please listen to the girl. She says it hurts so be more gentle.

She is participating in something that albeit she did not create – but has to adhere to. For the little one she is playing dress up..For the big one she is competing. Tha is what the weave was for, the competition and the dress up. Now I ask: what’s your weave for? Who are you in competition with or dressing up for?
I have witnessed girls smaller than this with hair extensions. There is an entire comapny that makes infant headbands with hair in them to give the appearance of a baby having hair. This obviously can evoke many a response from people who are obviously perfect physically and as parents, but my comments are for those of us who realize we are not. What difference will her weave make to the human condition? xoxo

LOL at this topic and the point was what? Hell little white kids have weave in as well so what-this child got weave put in. She is in a beauty pageant. Alot of them do it and its not a crime its just how some of the world want to see most little girls and women…with long hair.

oh, please my 7 year old complains more when I comb out her own hair. That baby was not crying or fussing all like that. even to remain as natural as possible sometime we must endure some pain or discomfort just to care for our basics that have to be done. that is what the competition is about if you want to win. it is a choice you make when you start the process. it will be fine as long as the things you say do not instill hatred for ones self in your child. black women, mixed women and even some simple behind white women choose to use weave and other enhancements because it makes them feel better. everything is a choice and we all need to remember that first!

Although I dont agree with the sew simply because i dont have processed are ” fake” hair but I do know that for these pageants those kids go through alot because they want to win. these parents know what the judges are looking for, so in order to win they do wats necessary. And I dont think its so much that black people look to white people for assurance that what they do is ok but its the arguement of nobody critizes whites for putting wigs in their babies hair but when a black mother does it shes the shame of the community … ie a double standard

For me as a parent even though my daughter is grown and in college. I believe that is not going to instill in a child that you need to be able to make it out in this world with common sense and your brains. You cant live off your looks alone!! And to put a 3 yr old thru that torture of getting a weave is crazy. That process hurts.. But this is just my own opinion

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/odoggz/ odoggz

    @DAREALRECKLESS
these are sheep idiots, who always use that excuse “well someone else is doing it so it’s ok for me to be stupid too”. They are too stupid to make a determination, for themselves, how bad something is, so they rationalize the stupidity by saying it’s ok since someone else is doing it. Read some of the comments here, they ARE doing this to their kids for everyday appearances and I know they have it in their heads “well other black women are doing it…”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TRIPLETHREAT718/ TRIPLETHREAT718

ROLLING MY EYES … so what if ppl commented that white kids get it done too .. clearly its just to show how common the act of weaving is in the pageant world .This whole article is based on a Mother giving her daughter a weave for a pageant … since when is stating the obvious become that ppl are sheep idiots … this coming from the same person who said “White people get clip-ons and add ons, or just wigs all together. I saw that shiite you black chicks do, that’s unsanitary and really involved.” ….

Ppl of all race get weaves, clips on, add ons and wigs. The way they go about getting them done are all exactly the same ..They either clip the s**t in , throw the s**t on , or they glue ,sew, and or braid it in …

By the way today is Sunday me and my daughter will be at the hair salon getting that extra great blow out .and trust me it has nothing to do with self hate or doing it because everybody else is .Its about switching up hair styles.

I hate the superficial aspect of those child pageants! The parents always seem more eager than the children participating and them, and most don’t have a life outside of the whole pageant industry. these children are made to look like grown women, with tons of makeup, hair weave, some use fake teeth, fake tans, false lashes, skimpy outfits, and too grown dance routines. Why cant a little girl look like a little girl and participate? The parents are a hot mess (and this includes manyof the black and non black parents), acting liek they are trying to live their own dreams through their children. Half the time the audience is d^amn near empty and they are spending all this money on dresses, etc, and doing this ona regular basis.

For me being a black woman, I can truly say that I have never in my life had to wear a weave. My hair has always been long, I have cut it short before and it has always grew back fast. I have a daughter who hair is long, pas the halfway mark down her back. I do not understand why a parent would put weave in their little girls hair for a pageant. the little girl is beautiful already and any pageant judge that don’t see that is crazy.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SweetPoodle/ SweetPoodle

To everyone who wants to start criticizing black women..please go watch any pageant on tv, and realize that White mothers are already doing this to their children, their daughters have the most hair extensions even more so than the black girls..It’s not right, and I am not justifying it but it is the reality of many girls who are in pageants..this is just a newsmaker because it sounds like a black mother is torturing her daughter for the sake of winning but reality is that it is the norm, get over it.

First I would like to say to each person’s decision is their own. I pass no judgment. I would like to say that as the days come and go, I find it very hard to find a woman that I admire. I know a lot of Black women do wear weave, extensions or whatever title it has, I’m drawn to simplicity, natural beauty and self awareness in a woman. Blessings to that mother for her decision.

Its all in the game. These pageants are geared and weaves, wigs, hair pcs all comes in the line of work. This is what ppl do in order to win. So I am not surprised. I am glad, that they choose to put weave in her hair, rather then chemically treat it in anyway.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sassy_gemini/ sassy_gemini

    @darealreckless I agree

And also, Why do these LITTLE girls have to look like WOMEN to participate in these pageants?? Its sickening to me. Im 22 and I dont even wear weaves or half the make up and glop put on these children. Dancing around in ten pound weaves and bathing suits?!?! Its appalling to me. Are there any pageants where the kids can look like kids? These parents should be ashamed of themselves. The whole pageant thing is contradicting.

Omg.. let’s be serious for a minute.. A 3 year old gets weave in her hair… big deal.. Black people have been wearing weave for years.. and apparently white people have found it to be appealing as well.. What’s honestly the difference in a 3 year old black child getting weave in her hair for a pageant, and a 3 year old white child wearing red lipstick in a pageant? If it’s a big deal for a 3 year old to wear fake hair, it should be a big deal for a 3 year old to wear lipstick. What we should focus on is these white parents allowing their teenagers to experience drugs and nose jobs, and breast implants.. Lets let the life or death situations be of great topics that NEED to be discussed.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mskristaleezy/ mskristaleezy

Well I personally think those pageants are quite superficial and if I had a child, I would never put weave in their hair, doing so causes split ends and breakage and will not have a good foundation from the start. Being a black woman I am all about changing it up at times and even wear a wig sometimes to diversify my looks but when I do wear my own natural hair people automatically assume that it’s weave anyway so I really do not care what people think but I just don’t agree with using weaves for little girls or the pageants all together.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ItsMsBoo2u/ ItsMsBoo2u

I was in pageant in the year of 2000 , I won Grand. I was supposed to return and complete again but I didn’t want to because it just not “me” . When I was in first pageant, my mom made me wear expensive makeup for the first time, I had to purchase over 5 outfits for each show talent, showcase, etc.

It was glamour , but pricey than you could imagine. Probably more than my community college’s tution.

Of course white baby DO wear exstion, fake teeth, anything addition… But I really didn’t wear anything fake, I didn’t care about win. They just thought I had more points and called out my name as a winner.

I still love watch tv show on how baby or young child getting in pageant, it shows me how they make fool out of them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SUMMER_SO_FINE/ SUMMER_SO_FINE

OMG, and we wonder about the results of our kids when they become mature. I love kids and all, but frankly, if she needed a weave to be sewn in her hair, then maybe she have no business in a beauty pageant. For the love of God, she is 3 years old! Why did this mother feel she needed to be extra by adding weave? SMH I can see a wig and some braids maybe. But if she is getting weaves at three, what will she be getting at 12? Honestly, the baby is such a pretty girl. She could have simply put some nice curls in her hair, dazzled her up with make-up and an extravagant dress would have been enough. A weave to me is to much. Why damage her esteem about her looks and hair when instead this mother should be encouraging her to accept her beauty the way she is. I just wonder what else would she sacrifice her daughter to do SMh…….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sivira/ sivira

That is a crying shame! I know that the mom has heard her daughter saying ouch over and over again. She should just fix her daughter’s hair in candy curls instead. She is a pretty little girl and she can wear her hair like this. She does not need a weave in her hair. I have an three year old, and I would never put any tracks in her hair. Her hair is long enough already.. This mom is stupid! Just my thoughts…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1SexcellentGal/ 1SexcellentGal

This is child abuse. Not only is it child abuse, but it’s telling the child that what she has naturally isn’t good enough. Play is the business of children. That child should be playing, having fun and enjoying her childhood, not sitting around getting weave sewn in. I bet pedophiles are having a ball looking at those wee ones. OMG that is just gross to even think about. Reminds me of that vid that was on the news with those kids half naked moving like grown women. I’m not saying that just because they dress up and act grown that some sick pervert has to right to go touch them. What I am saying is that kids should be allowed to be kids. Once childhood is gone, its gone and then the bills role in and its time to be grown and pay them. The pierced ear comment below is interesting. My mom never did mine and as an adult, I never got it done either. The way I figure is that I have all the openings I need. I didn’t pierce my daughter’s ear either. Big daddy wanted to and I told him he could do it in the first year (me making a compromise). Why, I don’t know. He didn’t do it then and he’s not going to do it now. The time frame we agreed upon went out the door. When she grows up, she can decide what she wants to do with HER ear. I won’t take all her choices away from her. Just like her hair is natural. I don’t see me messing with that either. It’s natural and lovely. When she becomes a woman, she can decide if she wants to undo God’s great creation. No doubt Big Daddy will want to put some mess in her hair in a few years, but I’ll just have to see about that. Hopefully he won’t be paying attention to the fine print lol. For heavens sake, let children be children.

I am aware of the “magic” that is worked on these innocent babies…fake hair, eyelashes, etc. The question that I ask myself–AND the parents is:

Aren’t you teaching these adorable little girls that this superficial and blatantly fake representation is REAL beauty?

If they are they’re preparing that child for a lifetime of feeling inadequate, self-conscience and depression for “not measuring up” as a human being. This is especially tough for little girls, many of whom have already fallen into the “barbie Doll Mentality” that is so relevant today. To me this kind of thing sends the wrong message to a child that is young and impressionable, AND IN TODAY’S WORLD OF SUPERFICIALITY, THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING AT ALL AND A VERY SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS.

AS for intimidating and coercing children to step into adult shoes lightyears too soon-think: the sad life of Micheal Jackson, Nuff said.
