A Father’s Labor Of Love…Braiding Her Hair

We recently came across these touching photos from hopefullhappyandnappy.com of a dad giving his daughter his loving touch. Originally from Ethiopia, Miriam Tigist Green, 4, was adopted by Emory professor Clifton Green and his wife in 2005. This is her hair unbraided, before her father applies his weekly loving touch. His care and attention to detail show mastery of a task few white men ever contemplate. Miriam had short, patchy hair when Green’s first saw her in the orphanage in March 2005.

    This is absolutely beautiful. I have pictures like these with my dad attempting to do my hair. He certainly didn’t have the skills that Mr. Green has but he gave it a shot. It’s wonderful that a father (black or white) would spend this quality time with his little girl. I love it!

    I been doing this everyday for my daughter since her hair was long enough to braid. I didn’t know how to do anything when I first started. I’m a lot better now. She’s 6 now. It really is a labor of love.

    Lol! The fork is funny as s**t! Who gives a rats ass if the man is black or white? The baby obviously looks happy and is well taken care of. Nothing else really matters. Don’t speak on other folks situations with stones and gavels unless you over there doing a better job with yours. Just my opinion. Stop being so ignorant…it’s not cute.

    S**t, why not save a white man? Lol. I see negroes in the streets saving white women night and day…all day everyday like they don’t even know what a black woman looks like. But when we say something about it not being right, we get slapped with the “stop being a bitter black woman” pill. If you’re a good daddy, regardless of your race…it is what it is.

    I think this is so sweet. It really made my day. I remember my dad having to braid my hair once while my mom was away, and he actually did a good job…lol

    Blk men take notes,We need more men to stand up and do what’s right in our familys….if there is a need that your daughters hair needs combing…..learn, it’s nothing wrong with that it’s makes you more of a man than less…….I know because i did and it made me felt more impowerd and not look for a woman to do it , and to trick myself……. just to get my daughters hair done,DON’T BE A HATER, just look in the mirror and do something about it.

    @Renee_blackstar: PREACH SISTER!! But honestly yes this is a beautiful thing. I can’t stand it when “men” refuse to do certain things (like their daughter’s hair) because they think it makes them less manly. Like Kennyboo said if something needs to be done, LEARN. There’s nothing wrong with that! I want a husband like the man featured in this story. Way to go Professor Green!

    SMH…. I definitely see nothing wrong w/ it. I do see another avenue for (some) women who are continually trying to find a way to be Lazy and find more “chores” for her man to do so she can be more independent. Cant/Wont cook, Complains when she has to wash or pick up anything she dosent use, and now the hair of the kids.Men, Find ya purpose and get focused, cherish ur “wife” (given u’ve married a respectable woman) and find ur purpose.

    i do think it is a labor of love. i mean seriously, how many MEN you know that do their kids hair? i encourage any person who puts fourth effort to take care of and love a child to ensure they are not just taken care of, but have a certain balance. Maybe it’s just me, but i’m just gald to read a story about a labor of love and not some crazyed person killing or huring another child.

    Was it incredibly uncommon and unobtainable for you all to a different picture of a beautiful hand of a black man, african man, even a mexican hand ..(hell!) just a hand of color doing a little girls’ hair????????????????

    I think it is a labor of love. Don’t know about the usage of the fork. Give the man some credit where credit is due. He took the time out to educate himself on how to care for his childs hair. You can see by the photos that he’s doing a good job.

    Ok. That is heartwarming to see a father taking pride in his daughter’s hair….but…what is up with the fork and the fact that we don’t use VASELINE on our hair….whew…..

    If I could just get my daughter’s father to BRUSH her hair (when I have already combed it for him), it would be such a beautiful experience. Yes, we have daddies who do the daggone thing and for that I am proud of you. MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD so we can celebrate you. Brothers, mentor a brother who has a daughter so that he too can take pride in celebrating the beautiful hertiage of our children. BESIDES, her hair is really cute!

    So quick to play that old ass worn out race card! This is a man that took the time to figure out a way to to keep his baby girl from looking her best. There are plenty women (including my queens) that will let their child walk out the house with a hot mess on their head. Maybe his parts come out straighter when he uses a fork. True we don’t use forks to do our hair, but as so many people have pointed out on this post, HE AIN’T BLACK so he had to improvise to the best of his ability. I have a white god daughter whose hair I’ve done on the regular and it’s a challenge because I’m not used to the texture of her hair. I give this man mad props for takin pride in his baby girl’s appearance. To me those pictures show that he didn’t adopt a token child, he adopted a child. Expand ya mental and focus on something other than race. I challenge more of my brothers regardless of color to be man enough to hook their baby girl’s head up. If you don’t know how, LEARN! I think it’s a wonderful way to instill a positive male image into the minds of tomorrow’s women. The look on my god daughter’s face after I make her hair look pretty is priceless and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Y’all non-hair combing brothers are missing out on something very special. REAL MEN WILL BRAID A HEAD IF IT NEEDS TO BE BRAIDED!
