It’s too bad these articles fail to suggest an answer when they make up a problem. I think the real issue that needs to be addressed is parenting. No it’s not ok to choose single parenthood as the norm that it has become. I support women/men that have that role, but it took more then one person to make those babies. We need to worry less about who’s bringing in the money and more about how the money is being spent and invested on behalf of the family.

When men were primary bread winners, my perception is that couples stayed together, in many cases with men listening to what their wives had to say. I think women that now have become the bread winners often dismiss their boyfriend’s/husband’s views and I dare say it drives men to look for an alternative form of empowerment, often sex.

Work together in the household and keep the partnership sexually satisfied at home and I think we can turn the single parent thing around and promote happier unions.

Reading the comments about this article is unique. On one hand some are applauding the success of women while some are crying foul and demonizing it. I have a few questions. What about the increase of brothas attaining college degrees and working in corporate america where there might be one or two other brothas in a department. What about the weight on the brothas who choose to walk a narrow path to getting educated, not having children out of wedlock, engage in addictive disorders, and choose to do the right thing only to be casted out as being soft, or not being (black) enough. People, it is so many factors to this article that BP simply forgot to mention. In today’s time, the focus is on females so if you are a you black male and you fall between the cracks, your a lost cause. If a black youth is not athletic but just average, their forgotten about. If a black male makes a mistake in his youth and is put in the system, its just about a lost cause. Too many people decide to have children without a stable house hold and what do you end up with. No matter what and ladies, please forgive me, but it takes a man to raise a boy into a man. I am a product of that environment. I might piss many off but what do you call a child that is born out of wedlock? A bastard. I can not apologize for saying this but I am not the one to have coined this phrase. I could go on and on but lastly, there are many of great successful black men out in about, many just refuse to deal with the drama and sadly, marry outside of the race. Normally I just read the posts but today I’ll make one. While I do understand what many are saying, that this is a devisive subject, the really sad part to me is that even when we are presented with numbers we don’t accept the truth for what it is. The truth is more black women are obtaining degrees and therefore increasing their earnings potential. The truth is as a race we do have an abysmal marriage and divorce rate. The truth is the further up the ladder you go the fewer suitable mates you will find and thats regardless of race, color or religion. The staggering rate of incarcerated youth and teen pregnancies show truth that many of us aren’t the great parents that in our minds we believe we are. The truth is we of color still have not banned together as a united people. And most of all if we can’t even accept the truth as being the truth, nothing will change… and thats the truth

Well this study is definitely realistic. What I do not understand is why is this labeled black women winning the battle of the sexes? That’s there to stir up some s**t. Anyways the truth is more women (of all ethnicities) are obtaining higher degrees then men (of ALL ethnicities). It’s not just the black women who are losing out on a corporate mate. If anything this only reinforces the stigma that women only care about social status. I mean let’s be honest.. if you are a a woman on top of the social status quo, why is it important for a man to be on the same level. I agree. Women, in general, are really coming up. Nothing can stop them. Although I do wonder how long before there is no need for their male counterpart. Anyway, no matter what role women have had throughout history, they have always been in charge if you look at it. Women are almost 70% of the retail market, it makes so much sense for them to make money because they are the dominating consumer, which makes them the most knowledgeable about her fellow consumer. Companies understand that and work hand in hand at ensuring that females are ever present in the workplace. While both male and females are ambitious, a females ambitions are not as intimidating, therefore their loyalty and dependability to a company is far beyond that of their male counterparts. Especially African-American males! So when a woman is expressing her degrees and higher earning please save it for the job interview, men are not intimidated just merely unimpressed, so bringing it up at dinner or social outings is entirely too much. As a matter of fact since you are making all this money how are we going to channel it to take advantage of these high ass taxes? Take advantage of woman’s earning power and potential, for example if women are spending the most money she could be the perfect weapon in marketing your own business as a couple. 68% of women’s conversations about her day at work are actual complaints, use this as an advantage to make your business approach better, rather than get a drink to pacify her nagging, get a pen and a note pad. Imitation is the best form of flattery and for years females have watched men rule households and get preferential treatment because men were the bread winners. Now that she is earning money, she is only acting out on what she knows. it’s not BLACK WOMEN, it’s women in general. The laws are made to rape men of rights, which was designed to empower white women over white men, and it’s just now that black women are using it to further empower themselves too. Black women are dying from HIV/AIDS. Black men are being locked up everyday. Homicide is the #1 killer of young Black men. Over 70% of Black children grow up in single parent households. 1/4 of them have some form of std or another. Are Negro’s crazy? What planet are you living on that you would even post this battle of the sexes s**t? We have real problems and if we don’t address them, Black people will be done, gone and finished in 75 years. There isn’t a “battle of the sexes” or at least not one that was prompted by women. Women are realising that they must be prepared to take care of self rather than rely upon a man that may never come or the man that abruptly leaves. Since the days of slavery (if not before) up until today Black women have had to take charge and provide for self as well as keep a family together; first due to the reality that a husband could be taken away without warning (sold away during slavery or lynched in the times after) or prevented from being around (remember the old welfare rules) or simply walk away because he doesn’t have a clue of the concept of responsibility and/or committment to others or decide not to even enter the picture since he prefers White women for the perceived “status” and “acceptability” it will afford him (like hello…Tiger and others). So in that context a Black woman had and still has no choice but to empower herself through education and a career with potential for advancement. Still often the male ego cannot handle a woman who is more educated and earns more money but rather than strive to improve himself by bettering himself through education and increased [legal] earning capacity far too many opt to try to destroy the woman’s pysche or physically abuse her and failing that opt for someone who he considers his inferior who will then in turn “worship” the ground he walks upon.

Anyone that really thinks that Black career women have an easy time of it I can tell you that s/he is mistaken. Black women in the working world in positions of authority or not are more closely scrutinized as people look for any mistake or misstep for which to turn into an issue of epic proportion. Women still earn less than men in the same professions and the glass ceiling is very real. Women are still deemed as nothing more than “window dressing” to “prove” an organizations committment to affirmative action/diversity and Black or Hispanic or Asian women are considered a “two-fer” under affirmative action/diversity.

In general men should stop ego tripping and certainly stop acting like they are “lord and master of the universe” because they are not even if historically they have been placed – or assumed that position through self-proclaimation. So if anyone needs to “put up or shut up” that would be men.

Despite all the issues we have I don’t see this as a battle of the sexes. I will admit that as black men we need to step up our game. There where clearly more black women graduating from college then black men.

We have a huge number of men/boys & women/girls who have not taken responsibility for their actions. To many of us are having a huge number of kids & are not taken care of them, not going to school, have no respect for life, to much violence, some continue to make bad choices, don’t take care of ourselves and believe that entertainment or drugs are the only ways to make money. We need to focus on the soul, heart and character of a person instead of how they look or how much money they have. We need to start teaching our kids manners, respect and help them strive to be great. To many of us tend to be selfish, greedy and unwilling to admit that we are wrong.

There are to many of us who are content with being below or just average. There are also to many of us that are just existing instead of living.

We need to have more respect for each other and respect for ourselves and we need to step up and stop making excuses for what we do.

since when does how much money you have is the measurment of the type of person you are which should be the measure of a man or woman in terms of a relationship. you shouldnt be able to buy respect, motivation, kindnes, gentleness, loyalty, courage and encouragment, attentiveness to the moment but apparently that is what you are suggesting when you measure a persons worth by how much money you have. The people who prop up the black community everyday are the ones who struggle to make a way out of no way and the celebrities who you folks dub as your heroes are the ones standing on their shoulders. I dont see a war going on between black men and women. Black men have gone thru hell and come back, yet we still manage to survive. Im well tired of all these BP editorials/articles talking about how deficient and ill-equipped Black men are. RARELY DO WE SEE AN ARTICLE ON A BLACK MAN WHO IS UPLIFTING HIS COMMUNITY, BE IT THROUGH CHILD EDUCATION OR POLITICAL MANUVERING.

None of these editorials address the fact that Black men made up a large percentage of the American workforce from 1920-1980…after the late-1970′s alot of labor-oriented jobs began to disappear (ie. the rise of computers in the 1980-1990′s) and the fact that alot of labor jobs went to places like China, Thailand, Mexico, Singapore, etc….Remember all those pictures of Black men working in Detriot factories, building American cars…cutting Pittsburg steel?? That image doesnt exist anymore for Black men.

Rather than writing these long, redundant articles on what Black men lack…maybe BP should highlight the positive Black men in the world and set an example??

@TeachThemCulture-I agree with you and to ad im sick of SOME people using the terms ALL black women instead of SOME and using that-SINGLE parents line and no FATHER in the home as a reason why SOME black men and women act the way they do. That might be true in SOME cases but,NOT all. My father died when I was 11yrs old and my mother stood her ground with my brothers and I and none of us has been inside a jail cell and we went to college and we all got great jobs. They are married and im not because I hadn’t maded that choice to do so and when I feel that its time-I will and I got 1 child and own my own house and car. Im not looking down on anyone else nor do I think im better im just sick of Some people using that as a reason why they act the way they do. I agree that marriages and all relationships should be based on love, trust, and other issues not just regarding money. Money is not everything and as women we should look to be equal to our mate not superior. Some of us work hard because we feel the need to and to help out equally so our mate won’t have to work so hard. I work, go to school, and take care of my kids and I am now a single parent. But when I find my next mate, I will make sure that we treat each other with upmost respect, not based on our background for education or who makes the most money.

I don’t think women are planing it that way, it just happens like that. I feel women are more successful, and will stay that way, as long as she is able to carry on the role of the man and the woman. After reading some of the comments here two of the people here make valid points. I agree with Paneiro1 that articles like these are made to pump the over inflatuated egos of women, because they can’t stand to see men making more money than them so they want to do whatever they can to change that. I also agree with doing_me74 that since women are equal now that they can start paying for dates more instead of the men having to pay all the time. Lets see how they like making more than the men now that they have to spend more on them.

Here is something very interesting, women have come a long way from the 70s to current day society. No longer is the man the breadwinner in most relationships, in today’s society women typically make more than men in most relationships. Whats interesting its that the drive in women has been stronger than the drive in men. When men were young , most did something stupid and did some time, garnered some felonies and ruined the rest of their lives. Not all black men by no means took this route, but statistics don’t lie and the prison records reveal more in dept details. Women have normally proved to be the cooler of the two genders, there are some stalkers, killers etc. but generally its the men who take the long ride to the correctional facility. Now here we are in 2010 and time has changed but the story is the same. THE MAN IS HOLDING ME DOWN! I am an American male, from African descent as i was told. No one is holding us down, brothers stop using excuses for everyday occurrences. Life goes on and the status quo doesn’t apply to me. I hate when people use that excuse. It shows weakness in our structure and then we are generalized. I don’t believe in how we interact with each other, its like we are doomed from lack of education with the language we call each other. The bottom line is this, there are an ocean of opportunities for everybody regardless of race. Stop making excuses and change your habits. I am the breadwinner in my relationship, i started a business and 9 years later the next generation will enjoy fruits of the labor created by hard work. I believe we as African Americans have lost respect and compassion for one another. Our brothers have abandoned their roles as fathers, and head of the house.
I was born in the 60′s, and back then the family unit meant something, now we’re living in a world that it’s become every person for themselves. Are priorities are in the wrong place. Whatever happened to together we stand, and divided we fall. We need to be proactive when it comes to our family, neighborhoods and our world as a whole. We must leave a legacy for the next generation.

Not only is it every person for themselves, I’ve been trying to figure out why African Americans are acting like it’s the late 90s and there is still a surplus in the US economy. White folk crying broke all over this country, black talking like they makin’ it rain! 2 nickels over lunch money and you can’t tell black folk nothing!,…9 xs out of 10 if you got big money you got big bills, so all it takes is for you to lose that good job and you crying on the unemployment line, about to lose the big house, big car etc.

The African American dilemma is one that is affecting all races, but the lower the lower the socioeconomics the more amplified the lack of support and more aggressive treatment of Male children that increases over time.  When we understand how average stress is correctly defined as layers of mental frictions that take up mental energy, then we can understand how differential treatment of Males in terms of more aggressive treatment allowed by society and more abrupt, harsh attention by parents, peers, and others creates more social/emotional distance from others; less acquired mental/emotional/social growth; higher stress that hurts learning and motivation to learn; and more activity for stress relief.  This a problem with all races but relative to socioeconomics and time in those brackets.  The nineteenth century belief girls should be protected is creating much kind, stable, mental/emotional/social support from infancy onward and thus lower average stress and continued support through adulthood.  If you want the Male to be a breadwinner in the information age, you need to help society begin to treat Males with as much care in life as Females are receiving.  This is the problem and it begins as early as nine months of age.
