business-womanOver time, I’ve always heard conflicting stereotypes: either that the older a person is, the more their senses are deteriorated OR the more a person ages, the wiser and more intelligent decisions they are able to make. Both have grains of truth in them, yet the real answer comes from a study that AOL News posted: the mid-life brain actually peaks in memory and is stronger in mind than its younger counterparts.

Apparently, people as old as their 60′s are sharper mentally than when they were younger, which supports the idea that getting older actually makes you wiser. While I could get into the details of this study (check out the book here), I really want to explore why in this culture the older we get, the less revered we are in the workplace and why even after studies such as these, there’s still ageism in America.

After being in the workplace for years, it’s pretty common to see young 20-somethings working alongside those in their 40s and 50s. It’s also unfortunately clear to notice a discrepancy or cut-off age where jobs are more likely to be lost. The younger, more experienced workers are almost always coveted because they come “bright” and “fresh with ideas,” even though those who already know what they’re doing could be the ones holding up the company.

Why is it that we’d want to immediately instate 20-somethings into the workplace when the ones who have the years under their belt could be assets for bringing everyone up to speed? While it’s great for the younger workers to get a chance, especially in this economy, it’s also important to keep those with strong skills for the job in the position to teach the up-and-comers. While these discrepancies could also be due to money troubles, it’s wrong for the stereotype of the deteriorating brain in middle-aged or older workers to be used as grounds to fire people who have been working at the same place for years. According to some experts’ weigh-ins on the subject, “Older people are [also] less likely to respond thoughtlessly to negative emotional stimuli because their brains have slowed down compared to young people. This, in fact, is what we call wisdom.” The older you get, the more calm your decision making gets. This could create a balanced environment in the workplace that might not otherwise be there.

Although it is true that cognitive abilities do slow with age, the study does say: “What we have learned from studying the time we call ‘middle age’ is that the changes that take place as we age give us the best brains of our lives.” Is that the type of worker you really want to pass up? It’s clear from this study that we should be working in unison with the older and younger workers to create a happy medium of job security and understanding.

What do you think about ageism discrimination in the workplace?

Well I have experienced workers that are up in age aren’t as proficient as new comers. Only because they lack technology. And now in today’s world you have to “know” technology“. And A lot of older workers aren’t as cooperative with learning “new technology” only because they are accustom to the “old way”. It really sucks for them but it’s life.

Hell no! In my field, things change by the second and you have to ready. Old people can’t keep up, they try but they can’t do many things at once plus keep up with the changes. My field IS very age discriminatory. Other fields, where the science of what the people are doing, hasn’t changed ever, well it doesn’t matter what age you are, once you learn it that’s it. Those fields are boring but you’re not wiser because you’re older. Unless your age has allowed you to see many different trends, and the thing you’re proficient at has stood the test of time, that’s the only time old people have an advantage. Hell, no one even wants to see old sales clerks in my field!

I believe that older people can adept to the changes in the workforce, but the have the EDGE in experience in dealing with problems with machines, people, etc…..and those who came out of college got the degree, but not the BRAINS of doing the new job as smoothly as those who been there a few years…….

Many older people in the work place can be a positive, but also be a negative at times. Older people tend to carry baggage. Especially in the work environment. They are less afraid to speak their mind to their supervisor, which can come off as condescending and demeaning. FYI,..supervisors really don’t like that sort of thing. They prefer employees who will openly accept the rules, younger employees tend to go with the flow effortlessly compared to many older workers. :)

This is an easy one for me, because I work at an HBCU. Also, I’m dead in the middle of the pack at 40 years old.

Older workers know the ropes of the business, and they are wise about process and politics. Their deficiencies tend to come in understanding trends and technology. What makes it hard for them to understand the contemporary workplace is either their fear of change or the pace at which trends and technology change.

Younger workers are the opposite. They know the current trends and are wizards at technology. But people in their 20′s often neither understand nor appreciate the politics or the ropes. That lack of understanding and/or appreciation often breeds disrespect or an attitude that could easily be perceived as disrespectful.

At the end of the day, younger workers need to learn to sit down, shut up, and listen; because politics, policies and procedures often trump creativity and energy. Older workers, however, need to learn that they don’t know everything because of a fast-changing world. And EVERYBODY needs to realize that their individual contributions look much better when people put their heads together.

I’ve found that the age factor varies by industry and by corporate culture. There’s a metric in information technology called the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) which basically measures the maturity and operational efficiency of a company’s software development (and other IT) function. A 1 means the company is not very mature or efficient, where 5 is very optimal and top notch. In a way, companies that find a mix of effective older and younger workers are optimal and top notch while those who favor one over the other may lose a degree of optimum efficiency. Of course, if your industry is physical labor-intensive, then younger workers will have more strength and energy, though older workers in the same field may have found ways to work smarter without breaking their backs. In information or service industries, mixing age and other social factors in the workforce is ideal and brings a unique synergy in the workplace.

Yes being older in the workplace is a great thing. I like working with older people. They are more efficient, focused and know more of the ins and outs…

BUT they aren’t as prevalent as they should be these days being is that they don’t always LOOK the part…I’ve worked in recruiting, and there were many well qualified older men and women who were passed over for the fresh out of college, AIRHEAD, BIMBO that didn’t know shyt but happened to have on the shortest skirt and highest heels…
Gotta love how men rule the world….

Just tailor your interaction regarding younger managers. Sometimes younger managers + older workers= drama in the workplace. Young managers need to be respectful, but older workers need to make sure they don’t speak to the managers as if they are their parent.
