yung-joc-kandi-burruss-video

In her last blog, Kandi posed the question: “Why Do Hip-Hop Artists Think They Need That Many Bodyguards?” after being in LA and witnessing famous actor Matthew McConaughey walk down the street like a regular Joe.

Kandi recently sat down with rapper Yung Joc who broke it down. He explained to Kandi that white celebs don’t walk around with cash; they carry credit cards. However, most rappers carry cash, because cash = status!!!

They’re flashy and frivolous with their money so they need bodyguards who will protect them from being robbed.

DO YOU AGREE?

Take a look:

    Yay 1st one 8)

Plenty of white “celebs” walk around with body guards. Bradgelina, Madonna, Paris Hilton ETC Just like theyre plenty of Black celebs w/o them: Brandy, Terrance Howard, Kanye west John Legend etc. After what happened to John Lennon EVERYONE should have a body guard.

    Anywhoo,
As far as “black people” not spending their money right, way to knock us down aye? Theres a difference between a black person, and a niggger. Black people are smart, sophisticated, classy, gorgeous ETC…Nigggers–arent. And btw you’ll find a niggger in every race, creed, or nationality.

NIGGGERS will spend thier money on stupid things and can definitely end up poor after having millions (The DUTCHESS OF YORK Ring a bell) and have to resort to doing silly things for money (MC Hammer cash4gold).

Another thing I want to address is what is up with Kandi’s need for money. Like I see you doing ALOT—Too much things for the sake of ‘a paycheck’ I mean, I JUST saw you on ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ Tuesday. How about spending time with your children, teaching her that MONEY ISNT everything? Seriously, dont you think you have enough?

Black people are always in more danger than whites so body guards are necessary for them. Either that or Matthew McConaugheys more gangsta than Suge Knight.

Hmmm…I agree that there are “N****rs” in every race nowadays…the term that was originally coined to downgrade people of color has now risen up to devour ignorant people of all races, colors and nationalities. The ghettos of the Mind are also spreading…as in ghetto philosophies of poor parenting skills, lack of focus on education, teen pregnancy, apathetic, uninvolved parenting, rampant disrespect and abuse of women, poor communication skills, wild, unsupervised children and dead end drug and thug cultures…Just went outside a little while ago to the local grocery store and heard a young ghetto teenager (who is more interested in selling weed than going to school to succeed) call out to his nearby friend with these priceless words: “What’s up, my niglet?” True damn story…ugh!

    I like this lil video…

to add on, we gotta get rid of the POVERTY-CONSCIOUSNESS of “lack” & of expecting failure. self-sabotage,etc

we are probly THE most creative people in the world, we should have so much more. when we spend money amongst ourselves and the money can circulate within OUR OWN hands, we can come up like the Jews/Asians do business with each other.

look at Japan, they had a damn nuke dropped on them but look at them NOW. they were fueled by their CULTURE, while being versatile enough to learn new ways that could benefit them and got it poppin.

we can spark another Rennasciance Era

Im sorry but I went to business school and took finance and accounting classes. I also listened very well in those classes. Sike..honestly, I was half asleep in class or trying to creep out early.

But if there is one thing I know about a million dollars, it pretty had to blow away one million dollars. Its also pretty damn hard to blow past 2, 3, 4, or 6 million dollars. VERY HARD!!

This is the honest to goodness truth. And you heard this here first:

1.) Black people don’t lose their millions because they lack knowledge. Truth is there are people in our system that are licensed to practice thievery, and live to separate rich black people from their cash. Our system was build to NEVER reward blacks no matter how hard we try.

2.) Americans are not realistic. All these celebrities, athletes, actors, rappers, and singers are not making the kind of money they claim. The media is a big liar that has all our small minds in a knot.

I have a hard time believing Shaq racked up $200 mill in the MBA, or JZ made $500 mill in entertainment, or Tiger Woods made a billion in endorsement. Or all these $100 million ball players are making these hugh sums. ITS ALL A BIG FAIRY TALE (Like Obamas Administration)

There are two ways to lose a million..1.) Either you weren’t making millions in the first place, or 2.) Your so called contract was just another media fairy tale.

Take out your pen and pencil and do the math. Oh wait I forgot….Americans don’t like math (LOL).

Well, Lets just all go to WALMART and shop :)

I think Joc hit the nail on the head. Generational influence is important, and it’s hard to give somebody what you don’t have (tangibles and intangibles, alike). Thanks, Bruh, ’cause some folks REALLY don’t understand the power of investing, compounded interest, etc. They also don’t know they have the power to do it. Hell, until a few years ago, I thought that in order to play the marker, I had to have enough money to purchase a complete unit.

Before I go, I have to plug Ariel Investments (I’m not an employee, just a loyal customer). It’s a socially responsible mutual fund company, and if you’re unable to set aside the initial one thousand dollars, they’ll allow you to deposit $50/monthly, as long as you sign up for automatic withdrawals. Even the initial deposit is $50. There are no account charges (unless they’re hidden). Check ‘em out; I don’t think you’ll be sorry.

Black/african american whatever they want to call themselves are the worst examples a parent should want their child to emulate. For those who have made it with their jibberish and beats, most end up broke in the end because of poor money management, poor judgement in friends and associates, and lack of education that would have taught them the basics. The industry only cares about what sells and teaches them nothing. Our young entertainers are living so fast and dying so young and for what? For those that you defamatory remarks about women and such must have had little or no relationship with their own mother because there is no respect in any of these songs. Young girls walking around thinking it is okay to be referred to as a female dog..hmmm scarry, thank God I came in a different era when parents cared, neighbors cared, and friends were friends.

@soularFlarez and Chicago_he Ya’ll are so on the right track. I need for my people to wake up before it is too late. Get off the Grid and Fiat. How come it is so hard for us to come together and get our own currency up and running for our community. All we have to do is barter until we can agree on what type of currency to use. We need to do this so we can pass on wealth to our children. Stop the hatred of each other and recognize that we are very important as a people!!!! Elitists have held the people down for so long using their little tricks from behind the scene. If more people would wake up to consciousness and realize these people are playing games with our lives that would be beneficial to us. Why is it that they are talking about irresponsibility of our people and money when all RACES of people are the same with money, either you are responsible with it or you are not..Period! and really who cares? Until we find a way to come together and bounce the dollar around in our communities and build wealth with whatever we are using nothing will change. It has been this way for generations and instead of us talking about CHANGE,(not Obama change either), but real change for people of color nothing is going to get down and then our children and children’s children will be DOOMED! It is up to us to stop this madness and find a way to make our kids futures brighter. We can’t blame the Media because you don’t have to feed into the LIES at all. Teach your kids the truth and they won’t get caught up in the mess that is out here. Like rappers and actors and anyone else that have money but spends it with white people instead of their own. While these rappers are walking around showboating with wads of cash how come no one has held them accountable. A great man once said “Hold us accountable for what we do and say” Rest in Peace to one of the greatest leaders we didn’t get a chance to see Lead us! 2 Pac
T.H.U.G L.I.F.E = The hate you gave little infants f*** everybody! I think that pretty much sums up what I have to say oh and of course in the words of my Girl the alway conscious Erykah Badu, I STAY WOKE!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/phazex_female/ phazex_female

Fact. Our black people are viewed as consumers and laborers.

But? The face of this can be changed. Example? Nail fashion. Instead of sistas throwing their money to Asians in the ‘hood, why come a GROUP of sistas that hold Cosmetology Licensure WON’T “band together,” set up shop IN the hood and have them remove themselves from your community? Hell, you’ve clocked 1600 hours to get licensed…why NOT? It kills some of us to SEE a successful sista, yet at the same time predatory lenders, individuals, etc. come to black neighborhoods that hold little to NO interest in the black community come in and OUT floats that almighty dollar. Make me understand? I do agree with one poster here that stated, “THIS system (for it’s never been ours) was built to NEVER reward blacks no matter how hard we try.” We’ve seen the evidence in this. Yet many of our people continue to do their BEST in “back-paddling behaviors” to prove why our people are STILL on the whole, not taken seriously.

I can only surmise that they are not hungry. That is, hungry for the resources here and globally. Yes the continual demon of racist exists and black people will always be FIRST on the radar, but please, do not make this the reason that we cannot become a force of our own, like the Jews) in moving forward…finally. We KNOW the ills and expectations of US out there, but many still continue with defeating behaviors AND with THAT influence…guess WHO in OUR ranks picks them up? I’ll let you tell it.

In answering the question about black people spending money correctly, first, to effectively handle money, you have to become “literate” about money. Because by OUR history? Money is still relatively new to black folks. Because the euro-clowns “control” the economic system in this country, they have had time to become familiar and comftable garnering money–and wealth. Just it was never meant for our people to become educated, it was never meant for blacks to attain optimal states of WEALTH. Example, I find it very telling that there have been (and remain so) very FEW black CEO’s in corporate Amerikka. Yet, we’ve seen the face of how the euro-clowns have wreaked havoc and bring companies to bankruptcy or dam near bankruptcy. And then have the gall to EXPECT generous “exit” packages. But will kick a brotha or sista OUT at the first call of, abandon ship!

Our black people have proven that we have buying power—misdirected by most counts. Many of us simply must “unlearn” to “re-learn.” Your brother and your sister is NOT your enemy! All of the hatred, apathetic behaviors, envy, DISenfranchisement stems from what the enemy has successfully TAUGHT MANY and now moves from generation to generation.

MANY of our black people should take time to find out what “frugality” and “delayed gratification” mean, and then adopt these terms until they become knowledgeable to savy about allocation of money and how to make money work for YOU and for your people.

Having a laissez-faire approach and mentality about money lessens your chance of creating wealth for yourself and worse, creating “generational” wealth. We’re still arguing over “stupid chit” and money in volume and circles still continues to be targeted and moved in particular circles—just not to our black people on the whole.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/KEVINBMORE/ KEVINBMORE

Many of us never was taught good finance rules, Many are careless to how they spend money, eyes bigger than their wallet. If they understood how credit scores work they would learn to pay their bills on time and it don’t have to be the whole amount, just 10 dollars , the computor only know u paid it, not how much, it shows u are responsible, even if u didn’t pay the whole bill. Many hustlers know how to keep money and know the value of it, always put some aside for that rainy day, thats how U keep money and allow it to grow. we created wealth and how to earn and run money/gold before slavery, and others took our lesson and captialized on them. Simple rule of money ,always save some, alittle adds up. and pay your bills ,even if it’s alittle your credit score will grow that way.the system shows 30, 60,days late and on, but to beat it send what u can before the cut off. never just say I,ll get it next week, because u won.t real talk. Hotep GODs.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/soveu34/ soveu34

Kandi and Yung Joc know exactly what their talking about, we should be a powerful culture when it comes to the issue of money.

Investment is not a topic in most folks home, nor is dividends, drip and if we have the powerful buying powers than we should also start opening up our minds to more long term investment and not some get rich quick schemes

I have to admit if some parents teach their children the value of a dollar instead of buying those high price azz sport shoes, sports crap, weaves, over priced rims for the car, over priced cars and materialistic shat that will depreciate in value and have no long term return than we wouldnt need to worry too much about some money matters.

You can be a mw(miminum wage)earner and still invest some of your money and for most we are living paycheck to paycheck and living outside our means. When you take the time to become financial sauvy than you will enjoy the benefits of it.

We all know that uncle sam still going to screw us over but atleast you can save something and Good Credit is a must have as well.

Take some responsibility and stop being full of shyte !

How come when folks tell black people some shyte for their own good, nyggas always bytch and complain, and end up somehow tryna blame the white man, instead of admitting the truth ???

Black folks are the most materialistic group in the whole entire United States of America. Why ? Cuz historically we aint had shyte. So when we get a little bit. We make the most of flaunting that shyte like we are way more paid that we are.

The only people who will buy a $50,000 dollar Escalade and live in the gawd’am projects are black folks !

Whites, Mexicans, and Asians don’t do that ignorant shyte ???

It’s interesting how this site is geared toward the African-American community, and at the same time, it perpetuates negative stereotypes about African-American people in it’s articles. As for this particular article, I feel very inclined to submit my response. I work in the financial industry. What I have come to understand, through my day-to-day work, is that American’s have issues handling their finances responsibly. This is no “black” problem. This is an American problem. Just as often as African-Americans spend their money irresponsibly, European-Americans do the same. This is an American tradition. When people from other countries come to America and obtain wealth, and keep it, it could have much to do with their cultural practices, morals and values. For example, Mexicans normally value family and unity in their communities. Therefore, it should be no surprise to see ten Mexicans in one household. While everyone is working, bills are split ten ways, and everyone is able to obtain and multiply their wealth quite quickly. This is due to their Mexican cultural morals of family and unity. American values are much different from many foreigners. Status, materials, fashion, etc; these are everyday American values that lead to irresponsible spending. For example, you notice American families make purchases on credit (credit cards) instead of being patient and saving the money. In conclusion, irresponsible spending is not a “black” problem, it is an American problem that we ALL should take personal responsibility for continuing. Maybe if we looked at it that way, we can start to dig ourselves out of our recession. : )

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Wonderinglovely/ Wonderinglovely

Kelis_TheMagnificent makes a very good point, this is not a “black”problem this is an “American” problem.
With that said there are plenty of Americans who do not trust banks, have never even had a bank account a day in their life but are well taken care of so its not a black thing its an American thing
Why do you have to say “Black people”? why can’t you just say “Americans”? Why do you have to shine such a negative light on Black people? We are in a recession right now, Black people don’t run this country, we didn’t cause this country to be in debt. We should be elevating our black people not dragging them down with senseless comments and articles That highlight fault and ignorance. This is why racism still exist because we continue to drag our own down. Why?

OH YEA…Another important thing we need to understand is that only 1% of Americans control 95% of entire American wealth…

This simply means that from a statistical standpoint, for every dollar that fall into the system $95 will go to the elite, and $5 will go to the rest of us slave Americans…

Yes, I said “Slave”…because if you live in America and you are working a 9 – 5 job, I don’t care who you are be it white, black, Spanish, or Indian your a modern-day slave.

So if America creates $1,000,000 in a city that has one million residents living there…

a.)$950,000 will go to 50,000 elites ($20 per elite person)

    and

b.) $50,000 will go to the rest of us 950,000 peons (.05 cents each)

Man, that’s a hard pill to swallow right there.

This is why Americans haven’t gotten a raise since Reagan, and also why the average American makes $6.75 (if your black), and $11.72 (if your white)

as far as loans, everybody in my entire family needed a loan to buy their homes from the 1940′s on up so it’s obvious that loans are sometimes necessary…though they wouldn’t be necessary if black folks had gotten their 40 acres and a mule to be well off like our white counterparts

This egghead gangster dosen’t speak for all African-Americans. We have innovative African-Americans in business, engineering, science and finance. And some of us got sense enough to save with 401 k’s, credit unions, checking accounts, savings accounts, mutual funds, stocks and bonds. Putting it all on your azz and keeping it in your pocket is a choice. Personal I think the dialog was a waste of time. A fool knows what he wants to do with his money. And has his fool ass reasons why not to invest in his future or in the future of his family. I read where a white man said. Don’t worry about giving monkeys (blacks) money. They have no thumbs (intelligence) to hold on to it. Enough said!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Feline123/ Feline123

    (sigh)
There is a lot of truth in what Yung Joc said regarding ignorance when it comes to Afr Americans managing their finances but it goes much deeper than that. A lot of rappers and nonrapers carry cash to make these “frivolous” purchases not just because they want to flaunt their wealth but also because there isn’t a”paper trail” when you purchase with cash as their is when you purchase items with a credit card.

And Caucasians Americans spend money too just on different things
Before Tiger woods, golf was usually played by professional whites (doctors, judges, etc) because it can be and is an expensive game/passtime (golf clubs, golf shoes etc) in comparison to say basketball ( hoop, ball)

I also believe that the “playing field” is NOT level when it comes to maintaning and building wealth for blacks and whites in this country. Even with blacks obtaining degrees and better paying jobs. However, our grand parents made less than we do yet it seems they had more; they didn’t buy on credit, they saved up their money and bought items with cash. But in today’s society, things are set up in a way that you need to have credit card just to obtain things that or be worthy of getting items on credit-rent a car, lease an appt, lease of cars.

“I also believe that the “playing field” is NOT level when it comes to maintaning and building wealth for blacks and whites in this country. Even with blacks obtaining degrees and better paying jobs. However, our grand parents made less than we do yet it seems they had more; they didn’t buy on credit, they saved up their money and bought items with cash.”

And there’s your answer! The playing field was never meant to be even for blacks and whites in this country.

It’s all about OWNERSHIP. Our grandparents weren’t about to put themselves in positions of having to ‘beg’ white folks for anything; especially after slavery! So they owned their land and businesses instead of settling for a job at Mr. Whitefolks general store. That was their empowerment: ownership.

We don’t stress ownership anymore in the black community. We stress dependence. Go to college to get a good paying job working for…Mr. Whitefolks! Even with college degrees and what not, if you go to work for another, your college degree is really only making whoever you work for rich. It’s just giving you a temporary living.

Lets get back to owning our labor by laboring in businesses that we own! That’s the only way wealth is built and maintained in our society.

ITS Affirmative that blacks spend money more money on material worth (clothes, shoes, hair)rather than putting away money for their kids college, life insurance, etc. Blacks are always in the mall preparing for the next holiday and at the end of the month they’re broke. Many other cultures are work together and save money to invest to keep their money rolling in.

It’s crazy as hell that every time a black person tries to educate, we as a culture snap at them and tear their s**t all up. The point these two are trying to make doesn’t apply to you if you have your thing together. However there are far too many within our black culture who don’t, and they, just like you, are not listning to the point. The messed up thing is they’re either dying before they reach 21 or killing someone for having more than them. In actuality, you are just as bad as the Uncle and Aunt Tom’s that you’re depicting these two people of being because instead of understanding that they are trying to reach a certain demographic for self preservation and awareness purposes, you’re pointing fingers like they are the source of society’s ills. Just don’t watch the blog if it’s that major, you’re the ones that sat through it.

In my opinion Kandi and Yung Joc make some valid points. Many rappers carry cash, wear lots of jewelry, and waste money. In addition, lack of knowledge (ignorance) is the main reason why some people make millions today and end up broke in a few years. What I can say is lack of knowledge is not restricted to race, there are people from all races, nationalities, and cultures who lack knowledge in how to handle money. There are books written on how to become wealthy and how to invest, I think more people (myself included) need to spend more time on those subjects. Wealth does not happen by accident.

Share these observations about education and isolation.
I can remember growing up with the phenomenon of Michael Jackson-
Rich, famous, & powerful. Later in his career I heard for the first time him speak. I thought, damn, he seems a little inarticulate by comparison to the status I held for him in my mind.
I knew then that he was completely guarded from the word ‘No’.
Later, reports of his spending habits raised eyebrows but as many of you have said, “It ‘was’ his money” anyway.
I frankly only can get excited or depressed about my own money.
The point I’d like to make is the lack of formal or liberal education with ‘isolation’. Your mother called it being ‘spoiled’.
Another example was Elvis. Although he was probably never on the verge of of being broke, he ate himself to death. Again, isolation and a lack of education.
Howard Hughes was educated but here again, he was isolated and surrounded himself with yes-men. He ending up a rich paranoid nut.
Since if you can’t trust anyone, maybe rappers [& wanna-be's] would do well to get a formal or at least liberally educate themselves.
    Just observations . . .

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jauharah/ Jauharah

it’s not just rappers, athletes and other celebs (particulary the young, dumb and arrogant ones) but the working class, unemployed and poor Blacks (being on welfare is not a damned job by the way!) that will always be broke for the same reasons; too damned materialistic and irresponsible. The slightesst amount of money obtained is spent on trying to “style and profile” in the form of clothes/shoes/sneakers, hairstyles and vehicles forgetting that material things come and go but concrete things such as education remain. No doubt everyone wants/desires nice things (even the most humble among us) but you don’t need those things if you know you can’t afford them and you have no back-up plan if something happens. I personally find it funny to see people driving around in SUVs (why are they even referred to as trucks?) but they can only afford to put $5 or $10 worth of gas in the damned thing which gets them to where – the next block or perhapss the edge of the gas station itself?

I work hard everyday and put my children and their stability before pursuing my own materialistic desires and so often I sacrifice to ensure that essentials are taken care of. Now perhaps that puts me out of the norm but at least I can sleep at night knowing that I can’t be judged incorrectly when measured against true values. I do however notice that my eldest has been infected by the disease of materialism and stupidity despite my best efforts and so will soon find herself put out and shut out by me so that she an learn just how hard life really is.

Financial Fitness Rule #1 is Buy Financial Assets (A Financial Asset is something that has a Return On Investment [R.O.I] a.k.a Makes More Money) BEFORE buying Financial Liabilities (A financial liabilty is something that has a Loss On Investment [L.O.I] a.k.a Takes More Money)

Examples would be Financing a SHINY NEW CAR VS. Financing an INCOME PRODUCING HOME; In essence Buying the Home that Produces Income allows more income to work with … if for nothing else … to Buy and Be financially fit enough to Buy A SHINY NEW CAR.

LoL not much of a Secret since Banks and other financial instituions (IRS, etc.) have guidleines to follow when it comes to how they value and Operate the Money Making mechanisms.

I am a professional guy and we all go through it but the point is to mature and change. I use to do the crazy things when I was young. Spending on cars I could not afford and buying things I could not afford. I was lacking self respect and trying to have others respect or like me. As I grew older and looked at all the money that was slipping through my hands with nothing to show for it I changed. I now invest more and pay off bills. I keep an older car until it stops running. I don’t really care about what someone says because they probably don’t have nothing any way. I don’t want to to get old and retire with nothing at all or nothing for my kids. We still will buy that expensive car which looses value as soon as you drive it off the lot. Try buying property you own or buying property to rent out. That is where the money is. Try saving at least some of your money each month. You will be surprised at how fast it acc**ulates.

I think you have to look at the background before you can judge the foreground. Most of these entertainers come from no money. They idolize the guys/gals in the neighborhood that have material wealth, because they think thats what being “RICH’ is all about. They want to be like these people, so they try to follow in their foot steps (crime, entertainment, sports). The problem is that neither their families (which are usually poor) or the people they follow have a clue about how to make the money last (that’s why these guys always end up broke or are always chasing the dollar). the other thing is they’re trying to outshine each other to prove how “RICH” they are. A lot of them don’t see a future and live in the now. A lot of them think they’re smart (otherwise how would they be making so much) so they don’t seek help in making the money last. think about the personallity of the average rapper, athlete, entertainer. they’re mostly bragging types, so they want to talk and not listen and when they do get someone to handle their finances, they don’t question or monitor that person, so they get taken. Education is the best backgroud for a successfull forground. Blacks have always done this, try to impress someone with their material wealth (thats why we are the No.1 consumer, but last in actual wealth) Look around your neighborhood and you will see it. True wealth is acquired over generations. You have to pass something down that the next generation can grow with. And stop blaming someone else for your situation. We all understand our history (slavery, Jim Crow, etc.) but when will we take responsibility for our actions. Look around your neighborhoods. How many Blacks now own businesses in your neighborhood. How many Black business did you close down, because of your patronage (or lack there of) Passing down a Escalade with 24s is not the same as passing down a businees to grow on. True wealth takes generations. And please all whites are not rich and all rich are not white. Stop believing the stereotype.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pourjamais/ pourjamais

Yung Joc somewhat hit the nail on the head, about black people and their money problem(s) generational influence is important and is part of the problem, but how do you give somebody what you don’t have. You don’t have to give someone anything but get them interested, first we have to check ourselves mentally we blacks have so many things that we are defensive about. It is hard to approach us about anything so get rid of the attitude, we also need to learn from those whom have made wealth and try to copy what they did within our means, make what we have grow. We also need to know our self worth and teach that to our kids so as they grow become adults and start looking for work they don’t let people pay them less than their talents really are. Yeah prejudice is alive and growing stronger everyday despite of the recent achievements that this country have made, we have to three times better in what we do than other races, but I will not ride that excuse. We have the internet which is not there to just check email, porn or dating sites, but to research to verify what we find out or what someone have told us. Lastly we as blacks need to get rid of that crab-n****r mentality instead of being jealous, and trying to pull others down that may have found the secret to make their finances grow. And to the ones that have found the secret to make their finances grow share with people instead of turning up your nose to someone who have not figured out what you have, help them someone had to help you. Status, materials, fashion, etc; these are everyday

    (((you got it right)))!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with both of you. We as Black people… must change our behavior when it comes to money and positions. Just because you have a dollar in your pocket doesn’t mean you have to spend it. I am teaching my daughter to save and plan for the future. My parents didn’t stress saving money and investing in your own future. Please keep up the discussion and Blogs.

While I’m not one to personally attack others without provocation, I do believe that there is WAY too much negativity and connotations when it comes to the “news” and opinions on BP and web sites associated with it.

As far as finance and being being money savvy, the basic point is to spend less than you what you take in and invest in opportunities that will more than likely increase in value. I use the qualifier of more than likely because not all investments will turn out the way you seek however it is better to invest in something that has a chance of producing more than something that will sure depreciate in value.

Hello Kandi, in response to your statement about pulling coattails: Why don’t you actually pull their coat tails and talk to them about planning/saving for the future instead of just thinking about talking to them about it. Furthermore, isn’t the JOB of their financial/business managers to do this. And if they don’t have financial managers then their personal managers and legal advisers should be doing this. But I have also learned that you can take a horse to water but you can’t make them drink, especially when they are “grown” and think they know it all and the fountain of money will flow forever.

Now let me pull your coat tail… Since you are in the position to meet many of these newly rich artists, you are also in a good position to start a financial/planning consulting company. Even if you don’t have all the knowledge yourself you can hire the right people to work for you.

Keep up the good work Kandi

Successful white people don’t necessarily carry cash or credit cards around them, they have someone around them arrange for or pay for all their needs otherwise “successful white people get what they want for free. So called successful “hip Hop” personalities who buy into that life style feel a need to over compensate for the many years they spent as less than ordinary people with no power to effect real change in their lives. The cash can be used to buy favors, and create the illusion that they are just as resourceful as their white counter parts. Nothing can be further from the truth. Black people will always have to work harder and pay for everything they got, no body is going to give us anything for free in America. Just ask Michael Jackson!

Kandi is right! its seems when we get money we want everyone to know it, so we show it. 15 percent of rich black people ARE very smart about their money, but 85 percent of them are not. I know for a fact in order for them to learn is to be mentored or just surround themselves with people that have the wealth and dont care if you think they don’t have a dime. If you hang with nothing but slackers you think like A slacker, but if you accompany yourself with positive go getters, business owners, rich people and people that loves you and your best interest in heart, you will never go wrong. We care to much about what other people thinks about us. I know when I get to this money the way want to get to it, im going to do everything to make sure my kids kids benefits off it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sweetchuck/ sweetchuck

They make great points (also lovin Kandi’s hair!!!)…but it would also help if the celebs (mostly black) would demonstrate the kind of wealth-building they are talking about here — stop walking around making it seem like insignificant material things are the possessions that one should attain…talk about how you use your money to help others in your records sometimes. But moreover, I agree with Joc. Adults do a poor job of instilling these values in the young people we directly influence. And us talking about what so and so has versus what we have built and own with our own hard work doesn’t help. We are raising people that are never satisfied (in a bad way). That is, people that never have enough “stuff” and certainly no “stuff” of substance, like a house and a savings account.

Its called INSECURITY!!! A lot of white and other celebrities are secure and have no need to impress people who for the most part dont have a pot to pi$$ in. There are some secure black celebs and there are also some white celebs who front. Its about being secure with yourself and when I see a brotha or sista who is flashing that tells me that they are insecure with themselves despite their wealth. Also when you think like that its only a matter of time before you will no longer attract wealth, it will run away from you.

A lot of people who are not use to anything flaunt what they have. It is a level of insecurity. As far as rappers, let’s be honest, the majority of them come from the streets and don’t have the sophistication to know better. Now Common, is low key and does not flaunt. I really love his style because you can tell that he is secure and believes in himself and is not trying to impress others. Other rappers need to take note.

In general, Blacks are just insecure and want to prove themselves. I don’t totally blame blacks for the mentality but everything goes back to slavery and how blacks are/were perceived. However, we as blacks need to think beyond that BS and understand that, if you are doing positive things, you don’t need to flaunt what you have. Plus, you should do what you are suppose to do and until that is done, flaunting is just that, flaunting. I personally have more respect for a brother/ sister working in McDonalds and/or going to school to get his degree and wearing the basic jeans and a T-shirt as opposed to designer this and that. But for the brothers/sisters walking around with stupid big gold necklaces, driving luxury cars, kids in designer wear and probably does not have a high school diploma gets no respect from me.

We are also still in the dark in terms of stocks, etc. Many whites are very well educated with stocks, bonds because of their ancestors. Unfortunately, our ancestors were excluded and didn’t have much knowledge of many things but it’s still no reason for blacks to spend money foolishly. I’ve been investing in stocks and bonds since I started working. I don’t miss the money because I don’t see it.

First of all, when my daughter was about four and learning her colors she asked me “Dad,why do they call us “black”? This is not black” she said pointing to her arm.”This is brown…” So today I say “African American”. We see our brothers and sisters walking around with gold and diamonds on and we criticize them, perhaps because we have succ**bed to the slave master mentality. I see some of the styles today, jewelry included and can’t help but think that some of us are feeling and have reached the financial success that we had in Africa when we were kings and queens and felt free to walk around with said “jewelry”. As a matter of fact it’s been said that in the southern part of Africa (where there were pyramids too) gold and diamonds lay in the streets and every one wore them. Or did you think that the other races brought the gun because they like the sun? We are and always have been happy and bold and beautiful and colorful people. And we were warriors. Our youth feel the warrior spirit in their blood and the other races are afraid because now they have the gun too, and just like them, we are afraid of our own children. And because we have succ**bed they have lost respect for us. Oh yeah, and the so called status symbol of credit did not exist. We have come today to deny our very nature of laughing loud and a lot and being a very expressive people. We blindly accept some other race’s opinion of what is good and what is not. When our youth self express we try to steer them away from their spirit to what is “accepted” and then we get anger and rebellion. We should celebrate the people like Dave Chappelle who didn’t wear a dress and take the money, Lebron and DWade and Chris who didn’t sell out, and people like Floyd Mayweather who is “flashy” and can make the remark “Everything I have is paid for” rather than still push a stock market that crashed, and a world wide “credit” system that has most of us in debt. Tell me honestly, who really owns that house that you are paying 2-3 times what it’s worth? Isn’t that usury? Did you know that banks will indeed loan structure a mortgage on a flat fee? I personally know of Muslim communities that have such an agreement with BOA. Miss a payment or 2 on your car and see if it’s still yours. Are you living the American “dream”? How much did you lose on your 401K when stocks fell? Don’t get me wrong I still love you and America too. It’s my home. But my eyes are wide open. Besides doesn’t the Bible say “owe no man”? We want to criticize our youth that strut their stuff instead of guiding them back to where the spirit lies. They don’t know how to channel their feelings because we don’t take the time to study where we came from in order to pass it down. What we should be questioning is why we are content to accept what we are being told about our past instead of reading J.A. Rogers or Carter G. Woodson. What we should be questioning why we live in a society that would rob our youth that walk around in gold chains and diamond piercings when we have done so for thousands of years…History and present African traditional attire shows us that we have always worn loose and flowing clothing. Knowing that we can tell our youth that they can feel the spirit without showing their behinds. If we help them fight the spiritual war may be they won’t make war on themselves.
James Brown didn’t have the Lear jet and radio stations that he owned previously, but the last time I saw him, shook his hand and said “hello Mr. Brown” he looked happy. The last time that I saw Mr. Ali he looked happy. And perhaps for the joy that they bought millions perhaps they will reach heaven. Just another opinion. I got things on credit and bills too but I try my best to keep my mind free thinking. See, my car is black and it and I are not the same color. Ask any child.

Don’t depend on everyone else to look out for you, you look out for yourself, take a course in Econ 101. And when being interviewed stop saying “nam sayin’ ” every other word, why is it that a lot of the white boys with the same level of education or lack thereof still seem to articulate better on national TV? My father only had a 3rd grade education but he was so articulate in his speech that most assumed he was a college graduate, he was self taught and read books in his free time and was well versed on most subjects outside of just sports and religion he also insisted on proper English spoken at home so his children could easily assimilate into the workforce and be competitive as well.

This country is rigtfully in a recession. It worship the false god mammon with it’s ranked materialism and status. If there is no fear of God why should anybody be shocked. People walk around puffed up with pride as they are the ones who makes their own heart beats in there chest and are the Boss of bosses. It is not just the people it is also the government who we failed to hold responsible for their wasteful spended and washing of money. It is not a racial thing it is lack of self respect and self worth thing. Money, position, and goods are not a measuring stick for of love and respect for ones self. It is character that is the measure of a man, woman, boy, and girl.

Hello Kandi, I hope that my comment just makes you go hmmmmm….! As far as your suppositions about the trivial pursuits of wealthy Black People are concerned, unless somebody takes them aside and teaches them the principles of investing and saving their money, they will probably buy some jewelty and a pair of Jordan sneakers before they talk to a Real Estate Agent. And if they grew up pissing in the projects, the most luxurious room in their home might be the Bathroom. (smile) Unless they are “intimate” with someone who also has money, they will never understand: “HOW MUCH MONEY YOU MAKE DOESN’T REALLY MATTER—-WHAT COUNTS IS HOW MUCH MONEY YOU SAVE!” Let the record also show that if the individual doesn’t have any principles, morals or common sense, they are destined to fail anyway….! I’m sure everyone has heard what happens to “A FOOL” and their money? So sincere, Michael Sydney Perkins (aka SWEET P)

@ Kelis … I agree. The people on here that are saying “yeah its a black thing” and that and this are just feeding into the stereotype. Irresponsible spending is irresponsible spending no matter the race. A white couple having $20,000 in credit card debt is no different than the black person “bling bling” out.

@ AngryMann1 The reason why people tune out Bill Cosby is the way he does it. People dont want to hear the message if all you are doing is downing and degrading them. They will automatically tune you out.

This article reminds me of this case on Judge Mathis where these two young black guys were suing each other for loans…one of them had a ’90 something car with chrome rims that were worth MORE than the car. So basically Judge Mathis said “you buy what you want, but ask for what you need” and that statement can be applied to American society in general. We are always trying to keep up with the Jones or try to get the next big thing. But african americans in general are harder hit because they have nothing to fall back on. If you think buying a ’11 BMW is the right choice when you are living in the projects is the best idea, then you are asking to be broke.

For anyone thinking rapping about the next big dance or car is the way to riches, consider this: once you made it big, a huge portion of your check will go to the record label, then the manager, then the producer, then lawyers…so without any investment you have NOTHING to fall back on.

One of the comments referred to the baby boy scene where ving explained guns and butter and that is exactly what Americans need to learn about. So if you are young or older and want to be financially stable, do your research and invest (this is the internet so there are plenty of sites to teach you about investments after all), no need to be ghetto fabulous and no one is going to feel sorry for you when you are broke and struggling.

This comment is for those who think this article is a stereotype. Sorry but this time I agree. Most, again I will say MOST black people don’t spend their money right. The first thing most of us want is a MERCEDES. We’ll buy that on a VW budget. Knowin we can’t afford it. Example of not spending your money right. Buying cars over 50 thousand dollars with no garage to park it in. Spending 500 dollars on a hand bag living in a roach infested apartment. Having 200 pairs of shoes in your closet with a credit card balance of 15 thousand dollars or more. Hangin out in the strip club making it rain while living at home with yo mamma. Yeap I totally agree. Black people don’t spend their money right.

The economic melt down exposed how Americans put up a front as to how they are living: beyond our means. I pay my bills and I still have a bank account that would make most people hate me at my age, but I know I want to live comfortable when I’m 65, if I reach that age, and I don’t want my future family to suffer from being broke. Of course I will teach financial discipline before anything else. White celebrities were not broke when they weren’t actors. Most of them went to college, and good colleges at that. Rappers come from the hood, so they’re not financially savvy. Young Joc is making crazy assumptions, but then again look at Will Smith. Do you think he’ll be broke by the time his star falls. I doubt it. Him AND Jada are too smart, and Jada went to college. Maybe if rappers stopped rapping about being rich, they wouldn’t have to carry so many body guards. Singers have body guards too.

Do you know the difference between an Asset and a Liability? The minute you’re able to decipher the difference you can discover whether you are rich or poor. We spend too much money in cars or clothes or even bills. Why take all your money and spend in bills? This why you are poor. There are things that Rich people do that are different from poor people. Why go broke? When you have $100 dollars, what do you do with it? Most people don’t believe in mutual funds, stocks or bonds. Why not buy property atleast if you get something for $150,000, it “could” appreciate to $175,000 or even more? Is it because of your credit why you can’t acquire property? You have blame yourself for messing up your credit and Oh, Rich people don’t have poor credit. Maybe you should start there. Things that we think have value have done and things that are of value we don’t acquire. We waste too much of our money trying to keep up with other people and going broke. Have you ever heard of a life insurance policy? There are so many things that can make us rich, we just don’t acquire them and that’s why we are poor. Having a job doesn’t make you rich. It’s how you spend your money. Nothing wrong with buying yourself nice things and wanting to look nice and live nice. You work hard for your money. You deserve the finer things of life. But when you have the extra $10 dollars sitting on the dresser, what do you do with it? A small saving account will give you a profit for your money. We should be in a profit making business because this is what it’s all about. Taking what you have and gaining a profit. Rich people know this and that’s why they are the way they are. They don’t waste their money on foolishness. Like I said – nothing wrong with wanting nice things, but the sooner you put your money in something that will grow your money and stop owing people (like your creditors), then will you be rich.

    God Bless Everyone!
