First, if Barack Obama was inmate #54321 on Cell Block C in the local state prison, there would be no question that he would be considered a full fledged BLACK man. However, since he somehow managed to become president of the USA and basically forced the whole of a racially plagued America to confront not only race but class in a constructive way, his racial identity is somehow a mystery. Well, what Black people already know is that if he does a great job and uprights our sinking ship, he’ll be classified as anything but a regular Black man. However, if he performs terribly, he’ll go down in the history books as Black, period. Anyway, I digress.

So today’s question is “Why is the”interrracial” such a sensitive term for some Black women? Aside from the fact that the question itself is rhetorical, it’s clear at least to me that yet again there seems a need to characterize Black women as irrational and hostile. In fact, one minute it’s being ingrained into our psyches that we have unbridled rage about “interracial” dating and now we’ve ratcheted that up to despising anything that’s “interracial”.

President Obama clearly and openly identifies as a Black man (I’ve met him personally so I’m not merely speculating), married a Black woman, and has two Black children, isn’t a mystery to Black women or Black people in general for that matter. In fact, it’s clear to us that “blackness” isn’t merely about phenotype, it’s a deeply cultural, intellectual, spiritual, psychological, and political experience. Thus, when whites and others began to toy around with the “why do Black women/people have problems with this or that race” thing, we bristle because we recognize the new spin on the hidden divisive and political agenda.

Again, this is really about characterizing Black women as being aggressive, hostile, nasty, intolerant, insensitive, petty, and frankly ugly and inflexible about race. I personally find it fascinating that, at least according to Black Planet, Black women are perpetually problematic, can’t have diverse views, and frankly aren’t privy to having valid opinions about anything, especially Black men and race.

Well, the bottom line for me is that the thing that I’m most sensitive about is the obsession with dividing and manipulating our people. At some point even BP has to realize that the constant race and gender baiting is offensive. In fact articles such as this one don’t really work for us in general because it’s clear that the topic is overall heavily loaded.

Even when we read catch all “hey guys, we’re on your side” phrases such as “We will endeavor to continue promoting positive self esteem for all black women and if you don’t believe us have a look at some of latest inspiring articles, etc..”.
Well, you know what they always say: “people will believe what you DO and not what you say”. Thus, if BP really wants to promote anything positive to us, rather than being so determined to “fix” everything that they believe to be wrong with Black women (and Blacks in general), they should instead consider hiring writers who have a higher level of knowledge, understanding, respect, and depth on the issues of interest to Blacks in general. The last time that I checked, the concept of one being “interracial” was neither a priority or a mystery to most of us.

So if you’re not jealous or envious of others’ relationships, and not like the women I described, then that would exclude you, as a black woman. See that’s not ALL BLACK WOMEN! I am a white woman who will soon have three children that are interracial. I love my choices no matter what I go through about my children. Regardless of how I feel it has been explained to me by many people that interracial are considered black more than white or anything else because this country still has in its laws somewhere that even if you have a drop of black blood in you that you are considered black and will be labeled as such.
I have explained to my oldest that people will consider her black first because she is very obviously not all white. I have shown her all of the negative things that people can say of her, me and our choices but I also teach her that her color does not matter but her character always will. I have taught her that her stunning looks that she has because of both her father and I may fade but her education will not, that no one-not even time can take away. I don’t think much of this sinks in but we won’t know for many years until she is confronted fully with those who do not agree that she should have come into this world.
As a white woman mixed with many nordic races I believe that no one unless snow white in every way is completely white and just wish it didn’t have to be the way it is for those that make the decision to have interracial children.

These separations are found in all races. i hear you, brotha, I also come from a large family of men, four brothers, father, uncles, and grandfathers, and none of the men in my immediate family married non-black women.

I was raised with proud black men who protected their women and children — and everybody in our neighborhood knew what time it was, and that we would go to jail over my mother or sisters, bottom line.

I also grew up with dark, gorgeous women — sisters, cousins, nieces, and sister-in-laws — in my family, and so I learned to appreciate black female beauty at an early age.

Actually, that’s not true that you don’t see white people bashing each other, on white dominated sites. That’s not true at ALL! Go to any RELATIONSHIP forum, you’ll see the same comments hurled at each other, as we do here. The thing is, we are the sub-culture here, so when they are speaking of “I hate dating”, the element of race is not the factor, they’re just having a BATTLE OF THE SEXES, when they go off. Their arguments are seen as general conversation and sharing of opinions, while our subculture arguments seem as specific attacks on our own. We assume their dating is normally with other whites. So their arguments don’t have the flavor of race, so their arguments are seen as littered with sexism, by the angry women who push back when a white guy complains about women. This is why all this pro-woman mumbo jumbo is so big with white women today, and also our own, taking cues from white women. When a woman comes out and puts out publishing called ‘THE END OF ALL MEN’, I’m pretty sure they have dating problems too! lol

And that’s just it, even if HB took out the “black women are rude” headline, and replaced it with just “women are rude”, it would STILL translate back into “black women are rude”, to the ignorant, black readers here, because we’re black here. Your drama-genes will throw the race card in there, and make it like we’re the only ones having these issues, we’re NOT! Then black women are going to make the connection and say “you hate black women”, as if you’d rather go to another race, because you hate our skin, you hate our hair, you hate blah blah blah making up all kinds of stupid shiite, to get more drama and crybaby support going, and reach into their hate-banks. That’s the problem! So, with that being said, the conclusion is no one has the right to say anything bad, about black women, in particular. If a black guy says he’s displeased with the dating scene, automatically, the drama audience here, translates that into ‘HE HATES ALL BLACK WOMEN’. White men can do this and it’s not seen as a strike at his woman’s race, it’s just seen as a comment on dating. It’s different for us, because NO one can voice displeasure with anything a black woman does, or the drama machine rolls out on your ass. So instead, we have to lie to you, speak to you like little girls we don’t want to hurt with our words. Where’s the respect in that?

Whenever you talk about all things racial and/or interracial, you are sure to get talk of the “angry black woman,” who will either try to debunk that particular perception or justify it. I am part of several forums. The ones with predom white people on them, they never say ANYTHING along the lines of ‘What white women can learn from Beyonce’ Or ‘Robin Thicke is on the cover of people mag, White women are mad’ You’ll never see that crap on there. First of all, I Love Black Men and I appreciate those Brothers that are holding it down and especially to the Brothers that truly understand what it means to build up the Black Family…I don’t have a problem with interracial dating as long as it’s in the name of love. The thing about this is, in this country whites have been displayed as the epitome of beauty, so would you know if you really love him/her for who they are in their spirit, or love him/her because society says they are better?

Many Black relationships suffer because we have been taught to hate each other. The proof is when you read these post and hear all the attacks on each other, Wow, unbelieveable. And also when you see far to many little Black children that are growing up in single family homes, and Black women being alone. My feeling on this is in order for us to really have strong confident children in society we must show them the beauty of strong families.

Our Communities are suffering because a vast number of Blaks have bought what society has sold them. That white is better. if you saw the doll study, many black children don’t even like playing with black dolls, they prefer the white doll because they said she is the pretty one! Now that is so sad, we have to teach them that they are pretty also. When our communities become strong, fruitful and we are loving ourselves. Then I would think if you decided to go out side of your race and date, that you really do Love him/her, oppose to believing he/she is superior.

Some Blacks, (not all) don’t even like themselves, or see the beauty in their own culture; and you can never love anyone unless you love yoursel first!!! I think love is great, so if date out of your race and you contantly put the people of your own race down, generalizing and hating on each other, then thats a problem. because you never have to hate anyone in order to love yourself. One of a few things. First, I don’t know where people get the idea that white men don’t bash their women as much as brothers bash sisters. Ok this topic has come up so many times and again I personally don’t believe black women have issues with interracial relationships, but as a black women I personally get tired of seeing alot of successful black men who think to get a latino or a white women is a”upgrade” and once they are successful they no longer even look in a black womans direction. Don’t get me wrong you love who you love, there’s a difference between i met a woman and fell in love with her and she just so happen to be white and i looking to fall in love and marry a white woman. But for all fo these black men who think a latino or white woman is a upgrade just assume if you were working at walmart would she still want you?

I think what pisses black women off is that after slavery and after Jim Crowe and the civil rights movement, we believed as a people we would walk into the future together and conquer as a people. But a people is only as strong as it’s weakest link, and the black man has proven to be the weakest link. He destroyed everything for the black family; Look at us now, black women are struggling to maintain the black family while black men are all over the place. When black men overcome and make it – they turn around and give the money back to the white race. Black men ARE the weakest link to the black family and that’s why black women are disturbed by this madness.

I’m telling you all, I have NO problem getting a black man, a white man, an Asian man or a Hispanic man. Why? Well I think it’s more of an issue for black women is because of the reasons why black men justify their need to date interracially. I fail to see how as a race you wouldn’t want to see your people finally unified and attempting to to rebuild and uplift the broken black family but instead call it self-hatred.With the sad state of the “black family” we should be doing everything we can to rebuilt it and rehabilitate it. By reteaching our daughters how to respect your man as the “king of the castle” when the title is well deserved. We need to teach our sons the value of black women and how to uplift her and support her and not tear her down. I’m not making a general statement in saying ALL black children feel this way but a good percentage do, when as a boy your first inclination of a girl telling you she pregnant is to deny the baby and slander her name there is a problem, when as a young girl you don’t know your own self worth so you search for it in the sheets and beds of numerous men you have a problem. For me the issue isn’t of why he dating her or vice versa but instead why not build up your own people

The issue here is not of hatred toward white people reproducing with black people but the fact that almost all other races have had some form of unity in at least one point in history except the African-American. Even in the days of slavery, you had some who believed the way they lived was fine as long as you abide by the master and his rules. The participants were asked if they were Hispanic/Latino, but this was not considered to be a racial category. 86% of those who only chose “other” race also described themselves as Hispanic, and 46% of those who described themselves as Hispanic only chose “other” race. 72% of those identifying as American Indian also picked another racial category, usually white.

The data are presented in terms of odds ratios and statistical significance, both of which are briefly explained in the next paragraph, which knowledgeable individuals can skip.

The odds ratio (OR) is the number of times something is more prevalent in one group compared to another. Thus, OR = 2.0 means a two-fold greater prevalence, OR = 1.3 means a 1.3-fold greater prevalence, OR = 1.0 means no difference, OR = 0.5 means half as prevalent, and so on. A statistically significant difference is a difference that most likely represents a genuine difference between the groups compared rather than a difference due to chance factors alone. If the probability that the difference obtained is due to chance is less than 5%, then the difference is typically considered statistically significant, which is denoted as p < 0.05; similarly, if the probability that the difference obtained is due to chance is less than 1%, then this is designated as p < 0.01. All statistically significant differences in Tables 2-4 (p < 0.05) are marked by an asterisk. On the other hand, due to inadequate sample size, genuine differences may not reach statistical significance in a study, although trends toward differences may be clear.

Table 2 shows that mixed-race individuals had an across-the-board higher incidence of health and behavior problems; the specific health problems addressed were assessed in terms of whether they occurred frequently or every day of the previous month.

Given the overall picture in Table 2, sample size limitations, and the fact that the sample is random and representative, all values in Table 2 that are clearly greater than 1.00 but not statistically significant can be considered as genuinely reflecting increased likelihood of health/behavior problems among mixed-race adolescents, and this also applies to Table 3.

Now, it may be that adverse outcomes vary by race combinations. To examine this issue, Table 3 compares various mixed-race combos with their single-race counterparts on health/behavior issues. The general pattern seen in Table 2 is also seen in Table 3, i.e., irrespective of which races are combined, there is an overall increase in health/behavior problems among mixed-race adolescents.

Let us address one confound in interpreting the data in Tables 2 and 3. It is commonly observed that a disproportionate number of white women who end up with black men are obese. Obese women tend to have elevated testosterone levels. [2, 3] Some portion of testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which amplifies the effect of testosterone at certain targets. [4] DHT is also one of the culprits in the genesis of acne. [5] Therefore, a higher incidence of, say, acne in black/white-mixed offspring with a white mother could simply reflect inheritance of the genetics of elevated androgens from the obese white mother rather than an effect of race mixing.

The point above needs to be considered in a more general scenario. When the races occupying the same geographic region differ in status, as in present-day Western societies, members of the high-status race who marry those of a lower-status race tend to have low status within their group. There are, of course, many examples to the contrary: Carmen Electra (mostly white) with Dennis Rodman (black), Heidi Klum (white) with Seal (black), and David Bowie (white) with Iman (Somali), among others. However, the aforementioned trend is clear, which raises the possibility that the negative correlates of race mixing are largely related to the unhealthiness of one or both parents rather than the deleterious effects of race mixing. This potential confound can be addressed by statistically controlling for demographic variables.

The authors controlled for age, sex, verbal IQ, grade point average, family structure (living with one or both parents), and family education; education can act as a proxy for socioeconomic status, and given an inverse relation between socioeconomic status and obesity in white women, [6] education can also act as a proxy for obesity in the white mothers of the mixed-race adolescents. Controlling for all these factors left the general picture seen in Tables 2 and 3 unchanged; some statistically significant odds ratios lost statistical significance, but the ones greater than 1.00 can still be considered significant for the reasons addressed above, and there were very few instances of greater-than-1.00 odds ratios diminishing to less than 1.00. Therefore, one can conclude that the negative health/behavior consequences of race mixing are related to race mixing per se rather than the variables controlled for.

The authors mention that the most common explanation of their find, which has also been reported by others using non-random samples, is that stress associated with identity conflict or struggle with identity formation is the culprit, but they also note that there is no proof in this regard. [1] Indeed, it is difficult to believe that struggle with identity formation is responsible for an across-the-board increase in health/behavior problems in mixed-race adolescents. How does struggle with identity formation lead to a higher incidence of skin problems?

An across-the-board increase in health problems should be evaluated in light of the basic architecture of physiological control, wherein the brain and the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are especially relevant. As is seen in the figure below, the ANS is involved in the autonomic (involuntary; automatic) regulation of organs, and its abnormalities could easily be behind Udry’s data.

ANS abnormalities are implicated in behavior problems such as excessive aggression, [7-11] atopy (a group of diseases such as asthma, skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis, allergies, runny nose, sinusitis, migraine), [12-16] headaches, [17-22] and a variety of health problems (see any textbook of medical physiology). Further, damaging some portions of the brain in rats increases the likelihood of cocaine or stimulant dependence, [23, 24] and something similar undoubtedly applies to humans, too. Besides, a number of brain abnormalities are common to both depression and drug dependence, [25] and substance use is more prevalent among mentally ill individuals. [26]

Therefore, to the extent that race mixing may increase the likelihood of non-optimal genetic correlation structures, it may be expected to adversely affect organism-level physiological control, which may very well account for Udry’s data.

Alternatively, since part of the ANS deals with stressors, chronic social stressors could themselves cause a number of health problems. In this regard, the data in Tables 2 and 3 do not vary as a function of whether the adolescent is living with one or two parents or as a function of family education, which can act as a proxy for socioeconomic status. Being teased/ostracized for being mixed race also requires consideration, but it cannot be argued that during the time period of the childhood years of the Americans examined, a substantial number of the mixed-race children would have experienced ostracism/discrimination due to being mixed race, especially since a number of them would have grown up in large metropolitan areas, which are known to be more diverse and tolerant. Moreover, the general preference in the African-American community is to prefer African-Americans with lighter skin, [27, 28] and lighter-skinned African-Americans also tend to have higher IQs than their darker counterparts (Table 4, [29]), which should reduce academic stress. In other words, black/white-mixed individuals, who would typically be assigned and raised as African-Americans, are not necessarily really worse off compared to their darker counterparts with respect to being ostracized/marginalized. Additionally, given white preference for Caucasian features and to the extent that Asian-Americans are envious of some of the facial features of whites, Asian/white-mixed individuals are less apt to be teased for their facial features than the less mixed Asians-Americans. And once again, there is no proof that struggle with identity formation explains Udry’s data. Also, the typical mixed-race adolescent with a white parent should have no doubts as to whether he is white; he wouldn’t look anything like a white person. Further, the data in Tables 2 and 3 do not vary as a function of age, which is relevant because the mixed-race individuals should have resolved their racial identity by their late teens.

On the other hand, there exist several examples in the animal literature where matings between more genetically distant individuals within the same species/different races result in offspring that are less healthy than the parents, on average, [30-37] and this cannot be blamed upon struggle with identity formation. There also exist examples of hybrid vigor, but nothing remotely close to hybrid vigor is seen in Udry’s data.

Consider also the fact that the genetic correlation structures manifesting as different races are so distinct that when a computer was asked to classify DNA data (326 microsatellite markers) from 3,636 individuals self-identifying as either white, East Asian, African-American, or Hispanic, into clusters, without being told which DNA sample came from which racial group, the computer clustered the DNA data into 4 groups, classifying all but 5 individuals into the correct self-identified racial group. [38]

Therefore, a parsimonious explanation of the across-the-board negative health correlates of race mixing in Udry’s data is that race mixing involving notably different races such as human races, by increasing the likelihood of non-optimal genetic correlation structures, increases the likelihood of deleterious effects.

Udry’s data are compatible with the likelihood of race mixing improving one or more parental traits in some mixed-race offspring, who may be better off than both parents on multiple counts, provided that a greater number of mixed-race offspring are overall worse off than both parents. The former possibility is surely not implausible given that the tremendous racial and species diversity out there implies that nature does not rule out equally-well functioning/better functioning novel genetic correlation structures, which could be brought about by race mixing, though the chances of improvement would typically be slim if more distant races are involved.

Further, those identifying as mixed-race in this study would generally have greater genetic admixture than those identifying as single-race. It is seen in Table 2 that those identifying as mixed race have worse health than even populations known to be highly admixed (American black, Native American, Hispanic). This could be accounted for if one assumes that first-generation hybrids who have the worst health/behavior problems would disproportionately not be very successful in reproducing, i.e., the healthier mixed offspring could, within a few generations, set up a mixed-race population that is healthier, on average, compared to the first-generation hybrids, but for this mixed-race population to approach or exceed the overall health of the original single-race populations, it would take many generations of [naturally] weeding out the unhealthy and settling toward a novel population-typical genetic correlation structure that corresponds to good health (more on this and on hybrid vigor in a subsequent post).

To conclude, it is irresponsible for any scientific organization to pretend that race mixing has no adverse health effects and it is obviously inappropriate to portray race mixing as desirable or virtuous.

Me: That sounds nice and all Sexy Butta, but if everyone was like you, no mixed person would bubble “African American” in the census. We wouldn’t allocate money to the black communities to fund our schools, and our infrastructure. When a mixed person is born, do they inherit white privilege? Do they inherit native American privilege? No, they inherit being black and all of the disadvantages of it. There is nothing wrong with being black though, we come from a great history and it’s a remarkable time with something to fight for. But formal society considers it a disadvantage to be black.

Me: African slavery often allowed more social mobility unlike white slavery, similar to indentured servitude. And even if Africans did, what institutional racist system is oppressing us today in housing, real estate, getting loans, etc? Not the African system. It is pointless to whine about (SOME) Africans being responsible for slavery, because the fates of blacks sold by Africans and the ones kidnapped by whites is ultimately the same. Our fate is linked with African anyway, because they have been conquered by European countries and subjected to the same disrespect we have.

As a mixed person coming from an inter-racial relationship, I can tell you that we are special in that we don’t see race or color as much as others. We are in the middle always no matter what.
