Bessie Coleman was amazing.!! I thought she was also the first African American man or woman to earn her international pilot license. Fearless… and first American woman to earn her pilots license.I WROTE ABOUT HER IN SCHOOL.To bad im afraid of heights but was marveled growing up about this amazing woman….

Bessie Coleman was the first American of any race or gender to earn an international pilot’s license and she was the first person of African descent to obtain a license.

BESSIE COLEMAN EARNED HER LICENSE ON JUNE 15 1921

AMELIA EARHART received her pilot license from the National .Aeronautic Association, the U.S. chapter of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, on May 15, 1923.

Oh,dont forget about FLORENCE GRIFFITH JOYNER better known as FLO JO.I believe to this day no other woman has come close to beating her record in the 100 meters of 10 49.but watch out for Shelly Ann Fraser. If anyone can beat Flo jo,she may have a chance.

Thanks for including Madam C. J. Walker. I hope your readers will visit our website at http://www.madamcjwalker.com.

  • jmack

    Hey everyone,

great to hear you enjoyed the article and a huge shout out to A’Lelia Bundles. Thank you for your words.

Cerebalblax, Wilma Rudolph actually overcame infantile paralysis and scarlet fever. I think she earns her spot with a formidable spirit like no other young woman in her position, having fought against near physical disability.

    Warm regards to all.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/alishakel/ alishakel

Speak for yourself! Ive never hated myself and never will. None of the black females in my family and close relatives and friends have never displayed any self hatred! and as you can see from the 30 black women above, if they hated themself they would’nt have reached where they are today. I dont know what kind of black women you’ve encountered in your lifetime. Having said that, this is a great article, these women are a great rolemodel, and should be represented more often.

I like how an article that actually matters hardly has any comments that should tell you a fundamental problem with our society. This isn’t what people value it’s not something we long to see or care about learning. Instead we’re flaming articles about Kat Stacks and Mel Gibson. Either Thanks for a good article seems you guys can actually use your position for something positive !

I’m a little surprised at HB here with posting such a positive article.
Nonetheless, I have always admired the strong Black woman. We need more of these women today to help light the path for many young women who have been led astray.
Not asking much, but it would also be nice to see some Black Male role models. Doesn’t have to be historical, but some recent because I know as far as positivity, it is lacking and that needs to be changed.

We need to build and grow not go backwards with our goals.

I’d first like to say bravo to jmack for writing an excellent article on some truly astounding black women. HB needs more articles of this nature.
Secondly I can’t stress enough how disappointed I am to see so very few comments for this article. As of now there are what, 48 comments? On a POSITIVE BLACK ARTICLE, yet it’s a ghost town. We should be in here going back and forth about the different things they accomplished and how more of us should strive to follow such positive behavior and attitudes.

I come in looking for the “so called pro-blacks” that flood EVERY negative article about blacks, yet they are no where to be found. Not one positive word from these hypocrites and loud mouths.

Instead, an HB article about something negative garners countless comments, with nothing but venom and self hating, racist comments. Now I see why the editors let those articles through, they are more likely to get more foot traffic for advertising money from the latter.

Next time HB post some BS article blame yourselves, it’s what you want and what you like. Drama and Misery, I think some of you thrive off of that BS, and you folks know who I’m talking to and about…

GREAT QUEENS OF KMT (ANCIENT EGYPT)

Queen Ahmose-Nefertari, participated actively in the expulsion from Kmt of the Hyksos–Kmt’s first invaders and occupiers. Ahmose-Nefertari was born royal heiress and became one of Africa’s most brilliant queens. After the twenty-five year reign of Ahmose I, Nefertari governed jointly with her son Amenhotep I. The veneration of Ahmose-Nefertari continued for more than six-hundred years after her death. To her memory was attached a special priesthood, who recited in her honor a prayer only used in addressing the gods.

Ahmose-Nefertari was given considerable authority in the cult of the King of the Gods when she was made “God’s Wife of Amen,” a position that held a chief role as a priestess in the national religious center, and was provided with goods and property legally doc**ented and published for all to see on a monumental stela set up in the Temple of Amen at Karnak. Her royal titles included the exceptional “Female Chieftain of Upper and Lower Kmt.”

Makare Hatshepsut’s twenty-one year reign occurred near the zenith of Kmt’s second golden age. This was an era marked by great internal stability and international prestige. One of the Hatshepsut’s proudest achievements was a highly successful expedition to the African land of Punt–regarded by the Kamites as “God’s land.” Hatshepsut’s royal titles included: “King of the North and South, Son of the Sun, The Heru of Gold, Bestower of Years, Goddess of Risings, Conqueror of all Lands, Lady of both Lands, Vivifier of Years, Chief Spouse of Amen, the Mighty One.”

Queen Tiye was the beloved wife of Nebmare Amenhotep III, and the mother of Akhenaten and Tutankhamen. Tiye is one of the most interesting figures in history. Amenhotep and Tiye married while quite young and shared one of the great love affairs of the ages. That she was of great ability and powerful influence is proved by association with her husband in all of his ceremonial records. She was such an integral part of Kamite affairs that on more than one occasion foreign sovereigns appealed to her directly in matters of international significance. The surviving portraits of Tiye show her with distinct African features.

Queen Nefertari was “The Beautiful Companion” of Ramses II. Her two major titles were “King’s Great Wife and “Mistress of the Two Lands.” After her death, Nefertari was worshipped as a divine Osirian, or a soul which has become deified. Under the attributes of Asr (Osiris), Kmt’s lorder of the dead, she was adored as a goddess. Queen Nefertari’s body was housed in a 5,200 square foot tomb decorated with vivid wall paintings–the most splendid in the Valley of the Queens–”The Place of Beauty.” Her tomb paintings and inscriptions depict Nefertari as a woman of great charm and exquisite taste, adorned with magnificent jewelry and wearing fashionable gowns.

Queen Istnofret, another distinguished African woman, was a contemporary of Nefertari, and was elevated to the position of Great Royal Wife upon Nefertari’s death. Queen Istnofret was the mother of Prince Ramses (Senior King’s Son). Prince Khaemwaset (one of the most brilliant men of the Ramesside era) and Prince Merneptah–who eventually succeeded his father as King. Queen Istnofret died in approximately year 24 of Ramses II’s reign.

    FREEDOM FIGHTERS AND RESISTANCE LEADERS

Although it was was extremely prominent, Kmt (Ancient Egypt) was only one of many great African nations where women held high positions. Makeda, for example, the semi-legendary Queen of Sheba (Saba), is thought to have lived during the tenth century B.C.E. This woman had all the qualities of an exceptional monarch, and appears to have ruled over a wealthy domain encompassing parts of both Africa and Arabia. She is called Makeda in the Ethiopian text known as the Kebra Negast, Bilqis in the Koran, and the Queen of Sheba in the Bible. The three of these doc**ents provide a relatively clear picture of a highly developed state distinguished by the pronounced overall status of women. Makeda was not an isolated phenomenon. Many times, in fact, do we hear of important women in African and Arabian history; the doc**ents they are mentioned in providing no commentary on husbands, consorts or male relatives. Either their deeds or inheritance, perhaps both, enabled them to stand out quite singularly.

Dahia al-Kahina of Mauritania was especially active in the North African resistance to the Arab invasions that occurred at the end of the seventh century. About 690 she assumed personal command of the African forces, and under her aggressive leadership the Arabs were briefly forced to retreat. The Arab invaders of Africa were relentless, however, and as the African plight deteriorated, the dauntless Kahina ordered a scorched earth policy. The effects of the devastation can still be seen in the North African countryside. According to tradition, Kahina eventually took her own life rather than admit defeat to the Arabs. With her death ended a magnificent attempt to preserve Africa for the Africans.

Queen Nzingha, also known as Ann Nzingha, was overlord of portions of both Angola and Zaire. She has been called the “greatest military strategist that ever confronted the armed forces of Portugal.” Nzingha’s military campaigns kept the Portuguese in Africa at bay for more than four decades. Her objective was nothing less than the complete and total destruction of the African slave trade. Nzingha sent ambassadors throughout West and Central Africa with the intent of enlisting a huge coalition of African armies to eject the Portuguese. Queen Nzingha died fighting for her people in 1663 at the ripe old age of eighty-one. Africa has known no greater patriot.

In summary, and in the words of Dr. John Henrik Clarke, “The first accomplishment of the African woman, in partnership with the man, was the creation of a functioning family unit. This major step in human development laid the foundations of the organization of all subsequent societies and institutions. In Africa the woman’s `place’ was not only with her family. She often ruled nations with unquestioned authority.”

Great job on this article. I would love to see more articles like this one. Uplifting and inspiring messages are what we need in society today.

It is articles such as this, that we should use 2 empower a younger generation of Queens that have been so disassociated from the accomplishments of the ones whom paved the road! IN ORDER FOR THEM 2 KNOW WHAT THEY’RE NOT…THEY MUST 1ST REALIZE WHAT THEY WERE!

Truly impowering at any age to see the beauty of what God created in “African Women”. We as women should be teaching our young women that with God stamina and great perceverance we can do great and might deed. Let’s pass it on!

    @brother AfrikanSpeech

Thank you for mentioning those Queens that we seem to not know nor want to know.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzpast/ jazzpast

I commend the writer for putting this article together, and showing some Queens the respect that are due. It is good that young women are able to see a different type of black women aside from the typical entertainers that has no substance.

Here’s the other argument, the women listed above are mostly pre-approved by white society. Just look at all their achievements and who they are married to. Where are the Betty Shabazz? Angela Davis? Cynthia McKinney? June Jordan? Assata Shakur? Kathleen Cleaver? Harriet Washington? Frances Cress Welsing? and others?

Where are the real sisters? The sisters that had our BLACK MEN’s back, sisters that fought side by side with our men, and sisters that proudly boast, “BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL”. Sisters that supported the natural look than straightening their hair(if a sister doesnt hair natural straight hair).

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzpast/ jazzpast

The FEMINIST MOVEMENT has championed the lie on being for the cause of black people. Yet, found a way to stand on the necks and head of black people especially on brothers. This act has catapulted themselves into international prominence, hence some of the sisters on this list.

They have raised up Black Feminist to replace the real sisters. They replace our Womans Movement with the Feminist Movement. This is what we call counterfeit. It looks like it, talks like it, but you listen close enough you know it’s a COUNTERFEIT.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MrRyanDee/ MrRyanDee

Nice article. A lot of women I admire on the list. I agree with a few others that there are many other women more than worthy of mentioning. Maybe have this become a continuing series of different women (and possibly men) being introduced and recognized regularly.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SUMMER_SO_FINE/ SUMMER_SO_FINE

This is beautiful. Despite what is happening around us in the world or in our personal lives, despite the many struggles from the past on to the present, despite the many challenges, sacrifices and losts our grandmothers and great-grandmothers had to endure, it is a privledge to be a black woman. Along with my mother, these female role models are the reason why I am so determined to finish college, and pursue my goals. They did it for themselves and have set an example for me. I just wish the youth of today’s generation had the same motivation. Our young ladies are far gone, wrapped up into society’s element of other things that are beyond significant. Thank you HB! Instead of calling the girls today, I’ve decided to go home and do my homework. (joke)

THOSE BLACK WOMEN ARE NOT OR WERE NOT LEADERS BECAUSE WHAT THEY SPOKE ABOUT DIDN’T BENEFIT THE BLACK RACE OF PEOPLE.

THOSE WOMEN AREN’T ANYONE TO THE BLACK RACE OF PEOPLE.

THE ONLY BLACK WOMAN THAT YOU BLACK PEOPLE NEED TO TRULY RECOGNIZE IS “CORETTA SCOTT KING” WHICH IS DR.MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.WIFE BECAUSE DR.MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. WAS YOU BLACK PEOPLE LEADER IN LIFE AND HIS COURAGE DID BENEFIT YOU BLACK RACE OF PEOPLE IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.

THERE IS NOT ONE BLACK WOMAN THAT HAVE EVER LEAD THE BLACK RACE OF PEOPLE IN A WAY THAT IT COULD BENEFIT THEM IN LIFE BECAUSE THOSE BLACK WOMEN ARE TO DUMB TO THINK THAT WAY.
