As a person from a diverse background, I can understand where she’s coming – from for the most part. We live in a very culturally and socially complex world. The way race, culture, identity is defined differs per person, region, culture, nation, etc…

One of the parts of this interview that I’m ‘troubled’ with is at 1:00 when Keke says that the Essence.com interviewer tried to make it seem as if she said:

“Black people can’t help that they have big noses, or nappy hair”. Then Keke asks the interviewer, “Is my hair nappy; is my nose big?” Then she answers herself, “No.”

What was the point of that? I don’t understand that.

Broad noses can be found in every social, and anthropological, race of people. The same goes for hair texture. There are plenty narrow nosed, straight or curly haired people who are Black, come from two black parents, or from generations of Black/Negro identified people. There are White/Caucasian ethnic groups with curly hair types that nap, tangle, or ‘fro’ easily. It’s not JUST one’s physical traits that attribute to whether or not a person is Black. Watching the interview, I felt that this is what she was suggesting which I feel is not accurate.

Then she, again, refers to Black people as ‘they’. I just can’t make out if she’s simply quoting the context in which ‘erroneous’ Essence.com article was written, or is she really referring to Blacks as ‘they’. Then she also includes herself when referencing Black people, “Black people, we are a rainbow.”

I can totally understand identifying as all three, or whatever number race heritages one may have. No one has the right to impose on the next person how to identify, or what about themselves they should/should not embrace. That’s each individual person’s business, something that we should all respect of each other.

I’m just confused whether or not she sees blacks as ‘they’, and not ‘us’. Does she include or exclude herself; or both? When she excludes herself, IMO, that’s when people are like “Oh, she thinks she’s better than US because she’s light-skinned/biracial/whatever…”

If you exclude yourself from any aspect of your heritage when referring to it, is that not indicating that you don’t embrace or see yourself part of that aspect of your heritage? Wouldn’t that mean that you deny that heritage if you refer to it as separate from yourself? I’m just asking.

When she talks about her mother, who was raised in an African-American household (her step-father was Black) in addition to being immersed in the black community, as Keke stated, Wyatt states:

“If the black people eat fried chicken, and fried fish, and…”

She says “the black people”, as if to objectify the group and place her and her mother separate from the group. It’s interesting, though, because even though her mother is White by ancestry/the way she looks, it seems as though she is black culturally. And not just culturally Black, but cultured in authentic Black American culture – a Southern Black sub-culture. IMO – this makes Wyatt culturally, and socially, Black via both of her parents.

I’ve met plenty of Black/African ancestored people who look White. I have also met my fair share of Whites, and other non-African/Black descendants, immersed in Black culture and people who pass for black – not by looks, but simply by the way they ARE. They speak and carry themselves as such. They carried on as any other Black person (referring to those in a Rural Southern Black cultural setting) from what they wear, how they do business, the churches they attend, the foods they eat, and even the products they use in their hair. And, yes, there are some White women out here who will use a Dark & Lovely box relaxer in a hot second and rock that -ish. Seen it! But White people, that I like to refer to as, genuinely cultured ‘Black’, that I’ve met, would never dis-include themselves when referring to blacks – especially if black people and culture were basically all they knew. If they did want to refer to Blacks, or Black culture, separately they would never say “they, that, etc…”

I think that’s where some people might have the issue with Keke Wyatt claiming her other heritage, or how she’s claiming all of her heritage.

I can understand her mother’s license to use of the word “Nigga” if she does have the background she has. Even though it’s becoming more and more politically incorrect for a person of any sub-culture to use this word, this practice has been going on for a long time. It’s not, or hasn’t been, a big deal to a lot of people in the Black community, even when non-blacks assimilated to Blacks use it. Granted, they’d only use it among their intimate circle of people, who won’t necessarily admit to any random black person that they allow a non-black, white, person to call them “Nigga”. It, strangely and indeed, is a term of endearment to many.

While, I don’t use the ‘N -word’, don’t hail from people who use it, and don’t associate with people who use this word (at least, not while I’m around), I know that there indeed are circles of those within Black culture who use this word, or a variant of it. And there are indeed some people who use it all the time.

But that’s where Keke Wyatt was wrong, ALL Black people do not use the word ‘Nigga’ all the time. It’s wrong to generalize that Black people use the word, because for many of us we don’t feel this generalization to be true, and we prefer that it not be true. But I do give her the benefit of the doubt in what she says, as it’s evident that the folks she came from do use this world ALL THE TIME.

She seems more matter of fact than most public figures in declaring her heritage, which I think is what also contributes to her rubbing some people the wrong way.

But that’s where I think she’s being perceived unfairly as ignorant. It’s not ignorant to claim your ancestry/heritage, if that’s what you’re are. It’s ignorant that other people can’t respect that, and when they try to tell her what she is. That’s no one’s place. And it’s also ignorant to misconstrue words to demonize a person for expressing their ancestry, even if you disagree with the way they came across in expressing this, and if you find this clashes with your own perceptions about race.

I agree with some of the other posters that stated she should work with a publicist – maybe just for the highly politically and culturally sensitive things. At the same time, I do appreciate her for being genuine in her interviews. We don’t get that a lot these days with celebs – everything is so staged.

Nonetheless, I really hope to see her album do well. She re-sets a nice standard for upcoming singers/talent. We all have flaws, or things about use people just can’t get over, but if you can look past that you might find the real treasure in people. A lot of times we disregard and take for granted the treasures living among us, and it’s when they’re gone that we actually realize their worth. IMO – we should support great and actual talent (to drown out all this hyped nonsense), and be more analytical in our media & news consumption.

I saw nothing wrong or controversial about KeKe Wyatt’s interview; it was open and honest. Anyone, in my opinion, who couldn’t see that is shallow and has other issues with their self. In my work, I have talked to, coached, and counseled lots of young women and men like her who are
bi-racial. Factually speaking, the majority of African Americans in this country have white or some other strain of blood in their veins and DNA as a result of miscegenation–read your history.

I am a very critical person when it comes to wealthy or famous people making comments that can damage our self esteem, but in Ms. Wyatte defense, I think it is obvious that she isn’t a Rhode Scholar, and niether am I I live in the hood but I have my own small Family Crises counseling office to serve people that are poor and yet aren’t elegible for Medi-Care. I see and hear women talk like this all the time, and I have to give her credit for trying. “She really doesn’t know that there is something wrong in what she’s saying, nor should we expect to.” It is true, that she has a responsibility to learn what is wrong with her thinking, but who is taking the responsibility to tell her and teach her. Certainly not her management or agents. Some of them may very well see this bad publicity as profitable way to increase her visability. Considering what her IQ may be, (THIS IS NOT A PUT DOWN) She is doing very well for herself and she is trying, she is speaking from her heart, and as a counselor, I can see that she is proud to be African American or half African American, or whatever. gosh, this is so dissapointing, I don’t know what to say, the woman can really sing, and as dark beautiful woman, I don’t think that she meant it to come off the way that it did. However, just like the rest of the world (many african americans included) I do think she sees dark as something bad, and her view of darker persons may be distorted.
