KielyFolks were going in on Cheetah Girl Kiely Williams after watching her trashy video “Spectacular.” Now Keily is speaking out and defending her “grown up” image she’s portraying in the video.

Listen to Kiely below:

The singer released an additional statement explaining her message behind the song/video for her critics:

I am an actor and performer. I have been so since my first role in a television pilot at five years old. I played a character when I was a “Cheetah Girl.” I am playing a character in the music video for the song “Spectacular,” as I did in the “Cheetah Girl” movies. The fact is, that sometimes women get intoxicated and have unprotected sex. My video puts this issue front and center. It is absurd to infer or suggest that I am condoning this behavior. Are Lady Gaga and Beyonce advocating murder with the “Telephone” video? Of, course not. Was Rihanna encouraging suicide with “Russian Roulette?” No. Was Madonna suggesting that young unmarried girls get pregnant with “Papa Don’t Preach?” I don’t think so. Is Academy Award winner Monique a proponent of incest because of her portrayal of Mary in the movie “Precious.” Clearly, the answer is no. I wrote “Spectacular” and made the video to bring attention to a serious women’s health and safety issue. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Did she just compare herself to Madonna & Monique??? I’m not buying this one Kiely!

The song and video is still on the top of the list of whackest ever lol ;)

I am sorry, but that was a lame excuse. Say what you want miss keily. But ur stupid. First off, we adults know that this is acting, but we also know that sometimes art imitates life. But to the eyes of a young naive teenager, all they see is their favorite cheetah girl talking about a one night stand with unprotected sex. Are you understanding what i am saying?..

Her comparison is actually kind of dead on. I mean, I can see where people think the subject matter is tasteless, but it’s no worse than a lot of the stuff Madonna put out, and no one said she was “promoting” bad behavior. They just looked at it as a song…as entertainment. And she is right, this happens every weekend, in nightclubs in every city. A lot of abortions and a lot of unwed mothers arise from just this type of thing. Its happening whether or not a song comes out about it.

Girlfriend is confused and talking out both sides of her mouth. She is saying it’s an ‘issue’ yet in her video she IS ‘condoning’ it.

Listen to the words of the song! She’s basically saying ‘I kissed a girl and I liked it!’ except she’s saying ‘I had drunken sex and it was spectacular!’

Where in there does it ‘address an issue?’ It doesn’t.

I agree with you @diva…. she can’t play both ends. Yes the video gets people talking, but listening to the lyrics she is condoning what took place. She is not saying “I got drunk, had unprotected sex, and now I am worried about the consequences that might bring”..she is saying “i got drunk, had sex, it was awesome and I would do it again in a heartbeat”…how is that making it into an issue. That doesn’t make it an issue, it glorifies the practice. Kiely and I need to be friends so I can talk some sense into her :-)

She may, personally, state that she does not condone said behavior. But the work, itself, condones it by the way the lifestyle is portrayed with nothing to challenge/oppose it in the visually and lyrically. Since she’s the author of the work, to me, it says she advocates, and is perpetuating this lifestyle. If not, there would have been some artistic clue or nuance within the lyrics, and/or video, that would have contradicted the overall glamorization of the lifestyle. Other artists have done this in their work. On the surface, it seems that they are advocating one thing, but if you look/listen closer to their work they actually are not. They don’t have to come out with public statements because everything is explained in their work. Kiely does not offer this in her ‘art’, her creative expression. It’s very one sided.

In Papa Don’t Preach we see the negative aspects of unwed pregnancy – parental disappointment, non-mature relationships… We see the uncertainty of life; the situation is not glamorized or made light of. The storyline clearly challenges the viewer to think twice about the situation.

In Precious, again we see the negative consequences of incest, and the situation is not glamorized. The storyline clearly leaves not doubt in the viewers mind the ravaging effects of incest.

Rihanna’s “Russian Roulette” doesn’t outright endorse/promote murder/suicide, but it does offer a mixed message as there is no clear message in that song that opposes what the main lyrics/chorus suggest. Thus, the song/work is dubious. and veiled, and not appropriate for young, highly impressionable, listener.

The same thing goes for Lady Ga Ga’s and Beyonce’s “Telephone”. Criminality and sexual promiscuity is glamorized, and there is no consequence portrayed for living that sort of lifestyle.

The same thing goes for Kiely’s video for “Spectacular”. Sure, she may be playing a hooker, and she may be portraying a lifestyle that is, and has been, common for many women; but she does not portray any consequence to the lifestyle. She brings attention to sexual promiscuity and irresponsibility, but the video says nothing in regards to “how it relates to womens’ empowerment”, and neither to the lyrics. Thus, the lifestyle is glamorized and made light of, and nothing else in both lyric and video form.

People simply don’t want to be held accountable for what they perpetuate. They just want to make money, and that’s it.

I think it is soooo sad to read articles like this. Not because of what the young woman said, but the
comment at the end was so inappropriate. Is she comparing herself to Madonna or Monique. No, she’s not, don’t take her words out of context. She is simply stating the truth. I hate when pple have to take things and turn them around. Let this young lady be herself. What, is she gonna forever portray a Cheetah Girl, hell no. She has to grow up at some time and let her do so. The things people should be speaking about are the things no one acknowledges. This is a bunch of bull and this young lady doesn’t deseve to be came at like this. Get a life.

I don’t think she was comparing herself to Madonna or Monique or any of the other names she mentioned she was just giving some examples. Well like she said you don’t have to like her video. Opinions are like ass holes everyone has one so whatever.
