Lyrics are being put back to the forefront, because Toronto has never been tainted with the business of hiphop. Labels here are too busy pushing Rock and Country Music. For those of you who don’t know, Toronto’s hip hop scene is more than 20yrs deep, we share a large west indian community with family ties. KRS-ONE and Boogie Down Productions (RIP Scott La Rock)did there first few shows, battling Rumble & Strong (Toronto MC’s) here back in 85, 86. There is not a lot of places in the US that have a deeper connection or history for that matter. Because it has been over looked for so many years as far as Hip Hop is concerned, it’s backpacker haven. Drake is only a representative, but I guarantee you you can find MC’s just as nice if not nicer… search JD ERA, or Tona… we got real MC’s here. Our taxes is up to 13% on almost everything you buy, and our income is taxed when we work. Compare that to many states that charge less that 6% taxes if they charge tax at all. We have so much different type of taxes, i could probably pay for my own health care if I didn’t have to pay them. S**t there are still medical procedures that is not covered by our health care system, and for the most part they are the most expensive.

Hip Hop is a culture started by one of the founding fathers Kool Herc a Jamaican who just happened to migrate to the US, he took what Jamaicans were already doing in dance hall and applied it to what the scene was at the street parties in New York. He was just doing what Jamaicans were all ready doing in reggae parties in Jamaica, England US and Canada for that matter, only he wasn’t using reggae records. So while I’ll agree with you that it’s a culture thing, Kool Herc could of easily migrated anywhere else and maybe Hip Hop would of still started in New York, maybe it would of just stayed Disco. But to quote my favorite rapper, “It ain’t where your from it’s where your at”
