V Magazine‘s March 2010  issue features a very interesting hip-hop themed fashion spread.

Supermodels like Liya Kebede join fierce forces to recreate the aura of the throwback “ghetto fab” fashion sensibility from classic hip-hop figures like MC Lyte, Lil’ Kim, and Salt-N-Pepa. V is definitely giving us an interesting interpretation of what they call ”hip hop goddesses of yore,” complete with gelled-down sideburns and bamboo earrings.

The spread was photographed by Josh Olins and is set to hit newsstands everywhere March 2, 2010.

Sooooo, now hip-hop is synonymous with ghetto? I’m such a square, I never saw it like that! Boy I tell ya if some people just stopped and did just a little etymology at times they would be surprised…

This is what the fashion industry does…it re-appropriates fashion and trends of other cultures and sells it back to the public for insane prices. Back in the 90s when we we rocking bamboos and gelling down our baby hairs Vogue would have never featured such fashion because it would have been déclassé. Now that hip hop has is universal and lucrative it’s in the fashion best interest to jump on the band wagon. It’ really annoying and I’m thoroughly unimpressed. But, on the bright side Liya Kebede is her breathtaking as usual.
