Zoe Saldana is radiant in red on the cover of Siempre Mujer magazine’s April/May 2010 issue!

Here’s what the 31-year-old Avatar actress had to share…

On her roots:

“I’m just Zoe. Not a little bit Dominican, not a little bit Puerto Rican, none of that silliness…I am what you want me to be if that’s what it takes for you to overcome your insecurities. As a Latina, I think we should be very proud of our heritage. We tend to look for European roots and reject the indigenous and the African, and that is disgusting. Being Latin is a mix of everything. I want my people to not be as insecure, and to adore what we are because it’s beautiful.”

On her masculine side:

“I have too much of one! People have sometimes told my grandmother, ‘Your niece has a bit of lesbianism in her.’ It’s that my sisters and I spent all our time amongst men. We were very popular with them. Our way of thinking is very masculine.”

But what about her feminine side?:

“If you want to punish me, send me to get a manicure or pedicure, or dress me in a skirt or shorts, and I would die. But if you dress me in jeans and a button down blouse I feel very sexy, feminine and powerful. It has to do with my personality. That’s why I think I’m very attracted to men who are masculine but in tune with their feminine side. I’ve been with my partner for 10 years!”

Her view on life:

“Life is much more and less than what we imagine. Life for me is very simple. When I wake up in my bed I always think, ‘If I’m fortunate enough to die in a bed, I’m not going to take with me material things, or money, or jewelry, or fame – nothing except the profound moments I experienced.”

Where her outlook on life comes from:

“At 31 years old, 100% of my 150% self esteem comes from my upbringing. The other 50% comes from my life experiences…The only thing I’ve asked of life is to be happy. I know that if I’m rich or poor, I’m going to be happy. Because I know what it’s like to be poor and happy when I had nothing, but I still felt like the richest woman in Babylon.”

On her definition of happiness:

“I like to work. I don’t have any preconceived notions on fame. Everything else is the price I pay for being happy with my work. Everything I’ve done has been for the love of art, and I try not to focus on the things that can distract me.”

Yup seems like my type of lady, down to earth and not all about materialistc side of things, and she seems real intelligent too :) and no I do not think she has to get her teeth whitened @Cmoore (or maybe my eyes are not as detailed as yours), but I do hate it when people are forced to follow everyone else because …its a bandwagon or so called stylish thing to do:)

I wouldnt say we “reject” the African, I think it comes from black people whose ancestry doesnt lie on the continent of Africa. As black people we saw Roots and even though Roots was based on the ancestry of Alex Haley we tend to look at Roots and automatically think Africa is where we came from. There are plenty of dark skin people who came from places other than the continent of Africa and I personally know black people whose ancestors dont come from Africa and dont like to be called “African American”. Just like not all white people came from Europe, not all black people came from Africa.

This goes out to (Unique019) actually people of color all did originate from AFRICA to see what Im talking about just click on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_dispora and that will explain to you the reason why there are people of color in the Caribbean,Europe,Asia,South/Central America,North America,Oceania,Sub-Saharan Africa which is why as you put it that there are people who are darkskin in other Countries besides Africa like Mexico for Example its just that this is not taught in History as everything is meant to be white-washed. Peace

I understand what shes saying about being around men..Glad she explained that..I have a perfect balance of my dad and mom….It makes you well rounded and gives you a better perspective and understanding of the opposite sex..Spending time around your uncles and dad gives you that masculine thinking but spending time around your mom and aunts gives you all that you need as a woman.Perfect balance.Better to take care of yourself too..

ps..I hope she doesnt go overboard with the teeth whitening..Its not good for your teeth at all…Stay away from the artificial means of beauty as much as possible.Smart, intelligent, beautiful woman..

This is the first that I’ve read an interview with Zoe, where every other word out of her mouth was NOT a curse word. I did not even know that Zoe was capable of exchanging dialogue without the inordinate use of inappropriate profane language. She is either using unnecessary expletives, or she is discussing personal wanton, lascivious sexual acts that she enjoys engaging in with men. In my opinion, her sexual appetite is her business and is not for public consumption. Her inability to communicate without peppering her sentences with the use of obscenities and sex, demonstrates that she is ill-equipped to engage in intelligent conversation.

She is reminiscent of LisaRaye. They are both limited in their intellectual abilities and capabilities – all fluff, and no substance.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Cmoore_78/ Cmoore_78

She does not sound as bad as LisaRaye. LisaRaye is unpolished reminiscent of Beyonce in the early days. Bey sound like an ex-slave as back as Jada and Allen in Jason’s Lyric.

Zoe is foul mouth but more like sailor. She has substance and it showed in this interview.

WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT UNIQUE019?!!!! Whether it’s Brazil, Belize, Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico, ALL of their BLACK ancestors came from Africa at one point! PERIOD!! Read a book sometime….and for those latinos that are in the dark, expose them to THE TRUTH!!! My family came from Jamaica, but I still know that my ancestors came from AFRICA!!!

That is true. I’m Black. But I am also Panamanian. I speak spanish but I don’t identify with “Spain” because I am NOT spanish. But a lot of “hispanics” and “latinos” and whatever else you want to call them do. My peeps from NYC know. When you Boricuas and Dominicans refer to themselves as “spanish”,lol! I know it’s just slang but it sounds silly. I’ve been to spain and I’ve met some of those “sangre azul” and you ain’t them. Lol! I can’t and will never identify with a conquistador. Because of them people like me,Zoe,Rosie Perez (whether she admits it or not) Sammy Sosa,ANY Afro-Latino person are here. Through rape, subjugation and extermination. That’s one of the reasons why I RARELY go to migente anymore,I can’t identify with that bulls**t! Lol! Panama mi orgullo!

I see that more in Florida as oppose to back home (NYC) then anything!!! And its sad,I never had to be standoffish towards most latinos (mostly men) until I moved here?? But its funny how at the end of the day, they mimic our style (urban/hip hop) but yet try to play us like they better then us,you guys can’t have your cake and eat it too!

It’s a disgrace in DR, for sure. I hate going back there, just backwards azz people on the ground. It’s doesn’t matter if you’re hick or hip, way too many have a light is right mentality. That’s why, if I do go back, I head straight for Haina or San Ped de Macoris and CHILL. The most sense would most likely be there. Chicks would rather mate with a chinese to get “good hair” if they can’t find a white skinned man. I know 2 women, back in Santiago, doing that right now, and 24/7 keep talking about their damn kids’ hair being so straight! lol If there is a crime in the area, all people have to say to cops, to deflect the blame, is throw “oh it was that Haitian over there” and that Haitian is getting a beatdown and arrested, FOR NO REASON AT ALL! I’ve watched this 3 times, personally, and when I stepped in they threatened to throw me in jail. Just straight idiots that I leave alone and haven’t gone back since that incident.

@Pknyght Zoe Saldana is a stick because she’s a dancer. Like a ballet dancer. Thats where she started, so of course she’s skinny as hell. Doesn’t make her any less beautiful. Get ur facts together before you go callin people crackheads. And I agree w/ what she is sayin, good for her. People need to find out who they are and embrace it.

Does she even like black men? I’ve never seen her with a brotha in a movie. Its more like she’s rejecting the African American men to me.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/morenoluv2004/ morenoluv2004

What it all boils down to is ….the disdain for their African heritage. Dominican or Puerto Rican is not a race…. It’s a culture…or better yet a place. As and African American/Puerto Rican/Cuban…i identify with just being a African American man. My skin is Black and it is what it is… and I’m very proud of it. There is no greater skin color or stronger history of survival than and African American Man. People can claim they are not Black when their skin is darker than mine…all I do is look and laugh. Then i say to them…”you sound like a buffoon”. To make a statement like that…when you have Black skin is a disgrace. I love Don Omar and Tego Calderon they call themselves proud black men. Some Latinos …not all have identity issues…they know they are Black, but just don’t want to come to terms with it. Because they need someone to look down on. And because the people in their own country told them that being Black is Ugly. Over on Puerto Rico and in the Dominican the Black like Zoe is treated like Blacks over here in the USA. Don’t let anyone tell you that is not true…I know it for a fact. Some of my family lives there and they have experienced it as well. But the sad part is….for most people if not all people… If it were not for the Black man…they would not be alive today. What Zoe was saying was that Latinos look at their African heritage as a negative. But what I say should be done is…if they don’t like claiming their Black heritage …ten don’t hire them for Black roles in films… Just that simple… We Black people have so much power…but we don’t use it. We hate on each other instead of supporting each other.

She is just every other race on earth asian, east indian, hispanics who all come from african lineage and turn around and hate blacks, won’t date or mix because of all the negative it has unfortunatle become in media, inner cities, it is terrible because we are not all this way, it has just been brainwash that has polluted our exsistnce. I am cuban west indian(ocho rios, jamaicia) african and I am proud of it, I embrace it cause it is who GOD made me to be. I applaud morenoluv2004 I stand with you!!!

well, when she stops doing movies that are meant for black women like, “Guess Who” which was a slap in the face to the original Sidney Portier starred movie back in the day where a black man visited his significant other’s white parents for dinner. The black and white race was ignored in the remake and one reason it wasn’t as successful as it could have been..What Zoe’s saying..this and that is fine and dandy but playing a black woman’s role does not warrant the identification of being a black woman when you go home and you not looking at black parents but those of latino decent.

I believe that this interview with Mujer magazine was carefully calculated by Zoe’s spin doctors in response to the negative backlash Zoe received from previous interviews — where Zoe consistently used obscene profanity, talked graphically about her personal sex life, and attempted to distance herself from the Africana that obviously permeates and dominates her genetic pool. Zoe and her PR team realize that she is NOT going to get roles portraying a Latina because she looks black, and she looks black because she is black. When Hollywood is looking for a Latina, they will book a Hispanic who looks like Jennifer Lopez – NOT Zoe Saldana. Because Zoe realizes that her only hope in making it in Hollywood is by (ostensibly) embracing her blackness, she had to change her tune – and change it quickly! Now all of sudden, she fully comprehends her African roots. Unless she woke up overnight and had an enlightened revelation, she is being phony… This is NOT what she has said in previous interviews.

Overnight-epiphanies aside, Zoe is getting roles that were originally slated for Black American actresses. Someone mentioned the role in the re-make of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, but the role that she scored as Star Trek’s Lieutenant Uhura was a huge slap in the face to African American actresses. When Nichelle Nichols won the role as Uhura in the late ‘60s, it was a major, ground-breaking coup. When it was re-cast, the role should have gone to an African-American actress – someone who is black 24/7 — not only when it is detrimental to getting a role, or convenient to them and their success.

This interview – and subsequent interviews – are merely a means of pacifying Zoe’s critics for distasteful comments that she has made in earlier interviews. You can’t have it both ways. In one interview, Zoe recognizes and embraces her AFRICANA, and then, in another interview, her verbiage is skillfully formulated to distance herself from anything that speaks to her African culture, and to cling desperately and exclusively to her Latina heritage. People who look like Zoe are ostracized in Puerto Rico, Dominica Republic, Cuba, etc. They are considered too “black”. In my opinion, she is hypocritical! Either you are black, or you’re not…
Black Americans are so quick to fall for the Okey-Doke. If an African-American was given a role that was originally portrayed by a Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican, Cuban – or any Hispanic – there would be hell to pay. They would be boycotting and lobbying by the thousands to have that black actress replaced by a Latina. (Even when J.Lo was cast in the role of Serena, Mexicans boycotted by the thousands. They did not want a Puerto Rican to play a role of a Mexican). In my opinion, the female starring roles in “Guess Who” and “Star Trek” should have been awarded to black actresses who acknowledge and live their blackness — authentically and genuinely. Then we wonder why talented and beautiful African American actresses like Sanaa Latham, Gabriel Union, Angela Bassett, Nia Long, Kerry Washington and Regina King cannot get decent roles? Hmm! I’m just saying…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/morenoluv2004/ morenoluv2004

As i sit here and read all of these very interesting comments i notice there are not many responses from other Latinos. There are a few comments from a few mixed brothers and sisters on her. One being AWV68…big ups to you my brother…just stay aware. The problem with not just Zoe but other Latinos as well….is…denial. It is easier to deny part of you than it is to accept all of you. And what i mean by that is…when you come from Poor countries and your government doesn’t support you…then what do you have. But not only that in some Latin countries they tell you if you’re Black you’re not worthy. And it resonate in their psychic…they believe it. They spend most of their lives trying to fit in a society that don’t want them. Just like here in the USA Blacks have struggled and will continue to struggle no matter how far we have come. I see Latinos in the USA and i see the ones lets say from Spain. Latinos cling to Spain as if everyone there look White… NOT TRUE!!! I was in Spain last year for a month… There are people that look like me and there are some that look like J-Ho. There are some that are very fair skin… but the majority of the people that i came across in Spain looks like every other Latino. Latinos claim Spain why? Well because they in slaved their people…is that why they love them… You see what I’m saying is…it is easy to accept what is so called good when it is really bad. But what is really good that looks bad to the world…they hate. When i was in Spain i saw this group that i love…to female singers Azucar Moreno…they sung a song that says “Solo SE Vivie Una vez” which means “you only live once”. And think about it like this…you only live once and you hate part of who you are… Some say Zoe is being real and acknowledging her roots. Come she is trying to further her career…she is no different than Rosario Dawnson. They both are cut from the same cloth. She’s always talking about how Latina she is…and her father is a Black man… But you hardly hear anything about that! Now as for Black Folks… i love you all but you kill me. We are such an accepting group people to a fault! We embrace everyone…and they turn around and screw us. We want to prove to the world that we are open minded…that we try so hard to assimilate…into society. Accepting people is all cool and good but when are we going to learn…that others don’t give a d–n about us?? When are we going to stop letting others hold our minds in their hands? We try to look so well to the White man…that we look like fools. We let others dictate how we feel and we don’t even see it. Think about it…most of what you like is because the world has told you what to like. Down to who we think is beautiful…they have that and you don’t even see it. They say our names are just so…so…ethnic.. hell we are ethnic…what is wrong with that. Others came with names that they had from their country of origin….but that’s OK. They say our hair is so…nappy…what the hell is wrong with that! But what we do is..try to fit in so we go get our hair straighten. Now i understand that we have to do what we have to do to get in the door…don’t get me wrong. People like Zoe is only out for Zoe and don’t give a – - – n about Black people. And as i said before….Puerto Rican. Dominican or Cuban is not a race…it’s a place a culture. Oh one more thing….Black people you think you’re so smart sometime that WE’RE dumb! And what i mean by that is…WAKE UP!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lmayo1984/ lmayo1984

I don’t like to get into these types of topics because of the non sense and hypocritical thinking. However I hate how some blacks hold a double standard towards people embracing anything other than black, but always want to call some one a sell out or “not accepting their heritage”.For one thing none of you know how these people were raised so what they are is who they have always been since childhood.I am proud to be black, but recognize that the world does not revolve around blacks and our culture.Regardless of what people say we are individuals and have the right to date whoever we choose and embrace any culture we so choose. One thing that’s ironic is that the same people who complain about being stereotyped attack other blacks for not fitting a stereotype and for being their own person.People are always trying to call some one white washed, but that same person is the one who is hurting other black people. When will you people realize that their is more to a person than their skin color? I call it reverse bigotry.some blacks act like the whites they hate so much.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tia_de_la_bahia/ tia_de_la_bahia

In Latin American countries Blacks and Indians are ignored or rejected. People prefer to identify with their enslavers rather than their actual ancestors. People deny their african and native ancestry all the time.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Kingdom_Knight/ Kingdom_Knight

Its true and i respect what she’s saying…but no offence this is all coming from a person that only dates “White people” maybe in my eyes that’s like asking a white person who’s picky about race what do they think about Afro-american woman?
Like is said, Afro-american males get mostly the bad rep in movies and in stereotype and in alot of cases alot of people do deny their backgrounds; and yes talking about it does help but someone in her caliber needs to back it up in action. This is a big world and yes its understandable to embrace whatever culture and there’s nothing wrong with it i guess in the end it really depends on the person’s Knowledge in wanting to know about their past and there background…that’s just my two cents.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mallymizzle/ mallymizzle

When the you wind up in court or in front of a hiring manager, they see you as black. It’s ok to uplift both culture that you are mixed with, but you can’t deny either one. While you see yourself as mixed and celebrate that, the world sees you as black and holds you back because of that. It is a wonderful thing to be of the Latin persuasion. And it is also very true, WE have NO Color. We as a race will range from the very fair complexioned to a dark satiny smooth black. What I find disgusting is that My Black brothers and sister have looked at me as suspect. Tough T***y said the Kitty. It as so goes to my light and dark African sisters and brothers. Sometime that just will not accept you or better yet Think MORE of themselves. P.S. I spent 23 of the best years of my life with an Italian husband, and as we all know they are just as much BLACK as we are. So race isn’t Jack.

Blah blah blah. The only one speaking any truth is lmayo1984 (And a few others. But then again I didn’t go beyond page 1 so I cant speak about everyone.) The rest of you guys are speaking about pure opinion backed up by nothing by personal experience. Not many here has any facts to back up their words so let me enlighten the rest. 1. I am a proud caribena who claims both her European, African and Taino ancestry ( Yes so who ever called all Spanish speakers Latinos automatically excluded b/c of your ignorance.) 2. How dare anyone judge Zoe. So what she dates a white man? If she’s happy and in love who are you to deny her heritage b.c of someone she loves. Have we forgotten that the heart wants what it wants irregardless of the mind? 3. Ever hear of Trujillo? If not once again your ignorant as* is excluded from this arguement especially in reference to Dominicans. 4. Lastly I love being from Africa, Spain and the Dom. Rep. I wish that the rest of us could say the same. These so called “black” (once again black is a color not an ethnicity) speak so much ill will such as ” deny their roots, self hating black latina” yet which of you celebrate Qwanza or know the name of the tribe that you descend from? To all my brother, sister y todos que no entienden ingles, you are beautiful and deserving of respect, love and beauty. I want you to look and the mirror and say I am beautiful and special as are others whom share my ancestry. I deisre upliftment for my people so please educate and ibnform yourselves before spreading hatred. Blessings to Jah.

I have thought about this and decided to write something once again. When it comes to Zoe…I don’t hate her…because I don’t hate anyone. But with that being said…why deny the truth. Why deny who you are? Why deny part of who you are? And why must there always be a Black Latino….who denies being black. I get that so much that it is stupid! Zoe has the right to date as many white men as she likes. Just like I choose to only date Black women….nothing but Black. It’s what I like and it is what I find attractive. And just to keep it even more so real…I don’t give a sh_t about ZOE. Just like Zoe don’t give a sh_t about me. But when I read and article and she talks about “we tend to look for our European roots and reject the indigenous and the African, and that is disgusting”. First off I am Black first before I’m P. Rican…Cuban. Because as I said before P. Rican and Cuban is not a race!!! Get that threw your heads….. It’s a culture and an ethnicity.. I am not in any way disillusioned by whom I am and where I come from. On the island of P.Rico you can choose the race you want to be called. And do you know that more than 80 % of the island choose white! Even if they are Black…and to me that says a lot. Now let me say they use to do that…not sure if they still do…and don’t really care. I can’t say much about Cuba other than what my parents told me about it…because I’ve never been. But still having family there….i have a nice view of what is going on. When some of my family came from Cuba to Miami people told them…to be careful of Black people. I was appalled when I heard that. Black people being careful of other Black people. What they should have told them is…be careful of all unscrupulous people. Because they all come in various colors…even white!!!! Zoe basically said that we should not be denying any of us. But you know that is not the case…and it will be that way. And I don’t have to celebrate Kwanza to know where I come from and what tribe…I descend from. Now my message is not to spread hate….but shine a light on the reality of some issues. Latinos…do have issues of race…I see it in my family and I see it in some of my friends as well. But I can say for me…I’m in no way in denial of who I am. I love being Black Just as much as I love being P. Rican/Cuban. Well I do love being African American more because I love what we represent. It may not be as positive as I would like it to be. But as I said before and I will say it again!!!!!!! We come from a stock of people that has transcended the odds. We come from people who were and still are determined to succeed. And we come from PEOPLE that no matter what is thrown at us…we will overcome! So to all the people who have issues about what I wrote… I CAN SAY AND I DON’T APOLOGIZE FOR IT…IT IS WHAT IT IS. You can’t tell me what I don’t know because I’ve lived it! I see it every day… Even with all the hypocrisy in this world and from what I read….on this site i still have much love for all my people. And I will say this in closing…this dialog is good…because you learn that so many people still don’t see. And you learn that there are some with a real grasp of what is the reality of our people. Peace and love to everyone….no matter what

morenoluv, you haven’t listened to a word Zoe said. Zoe advocated that Latino’s SHOULD acknowlege and embrace their African and Indigeonous sides and not just favor the european. You accused her of saying the exact opposite of what she had actually said. You should work for Fox News.

@morenoluv2004 I really appreciate your perspective. I had a similar conversation with a “black latina” friend of mine. Her father is African-American and her mother is Puerto Rican, she identifies as both AA and PR, which I think is great, but doesn’t feel “accepted” by either community. That is the most concerning, for me at least, because Latinos and African American’s, generally, accept the status of minority, however as People of Color we are a majority. We allow colorism and self hate to drive racial issues, which in turn impacts our power. The African Diaspora/Slave Trade did not just hit the states but the Caribbean, Central and South America. Taino, Indigenous American, and African influences can be found in are of our bloodlines. Love the post, Bruh, thank you!
