‘The Blind Side’ may have earned several Academy Award nominations and a Best Actress win for Sandra Bullock this past weekend, but Vanessa Williams is clearly no fan of the movie. Williams said on ‘The View’ that the film, which depicts a homeless African-American youngster who is adopted by an affluent white family, does little to improve race relations.

Williams argued that film only reinforces the notion that African-Americans need whites in order to succeed.

Do YOU agree?

I love how the other ladies on the panel didnt even HEAR Vanessa Williams and totally downplayed her points just to make their own.

I heard that fool vanessa say that and was shocked until I realized, damn near every negro in black hollywood is there because of WHITE HELP. She was the FIRST Ms. America because she is BLACK. The academy overlooked her SLEAZY reputation because they needed a BLACK for political reasons.

Sorry Affirmative Action babies like herself are DOING NOTHING TO HELP THE NEXT GENERATION OF BLACKS. If they were doing there jobs helping their own community, we wouldn’t need whites, but these negroes will walk by a homeless black man, woman or child with their nose in the air and not offer them one dollar. American Idol is responsible for creating the next generation of black stars. Stupid oprah finally reached out to an unknown star but made sure that she found someone unqualified to be taken seriously in the entertainment community (sibide). The only person serious about creating new stars and new millionaires is Tyler Perry.

White folks expected these affirmative action negroes to create jobs in the black community with the billions they entrusted them with, but I don’t believe that ALL of them put together has created 5000 jobs. They do nothing but give to WHITE charities FOR TAX BREAKS, start foundations as a TAX SHELTER and solicit WHITE corporate america for donations, and live high on the hogg.

That’s why white liberals and conservatives are fed up with them, and are finding excuses to get back the wealth through tax audits, bogus court cases, etc etc.

Since white taxpayers are still responsible for the welfare of the black community they should TAKE ALL THE MONEY BACK.

She should have applauded that white family for taking in that child, but since this b8tch is only interested in what jobs/money White folks can give to her and her family, she didn’t appreciate the movie. White folks making her sorry selfish azz look bad. What a jerk.

If in the true-ness of the story (Hollyweird liberties aside), a “white” family adopted, took in, supported, etc. a young “black” man in need, and because of that home/support being available to him he did not become another “urban” statistic of wasted life and wasted talent, then why should this bring up a “theme for black folks” of anything? It was what it was. So I guess I agree with Barbara that as a film, the point was that this was a family with the means and desire to help one youngster who needed their help. Period.

I agree with Vanessa. Finally some real critical analysis of white propaganda in films. And we have seen this countless times, whites saving the day, and Blacks gleefelly happy because they did. It is utter BS. If we don’t go to films and begin critiquing them for what they really are, we are just sheeple being led to the fire. The energy it takes for Hollywood to promote skewed ideas for the promotion of white supremacy in subtle kindness, keeps us from overstanding the purpose of Hollywood and their tired films. …. I will never go to a Hollywood film again. ONLY NOLLYWOOD BABY!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DreamKeeper46/ DreamKeeper46

    @rdawta
it is obvious U R an african who is only interested in AMERICANS giving all of their charity to you, instead of going to your own wealthy people and govt and demand HELP, and free public schools, etc. you talked about movies promoting white supremacy but you’d rather do a greencard marriage to come to america, than LIVE UNDER YOUR BLACK PRESIDENTS AND GOVT.

black africans and caribbeans begging WHITE america for help every time they have a disaster, instead of going to their fellow black africans, and fellow black caribbean nations IS WHAT IS REALLY PROMOTING WHITE SUPREMACY U FOOL. You’d rather ride a sharks back to come to america to feed off the crumbs off of white and black america’s plate than live in your BLACK COUNTRIES UNDER YOUR BLACK GOVTS.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DreamKeeper46/ DreamKeeper46

FOREIGN BLACKS COMMITTING GREENCARD MARRIAGE FRAUD, AND RIDING A SHARKS BACK TO GET TO RASCIST AMERICA RATHER THAN LIVE IN THEIR BLACK COUNTRIES, IS REALLY WHAT IS PROMOTING WHITE SUPREMACY, AND MANY OF THESE FOOLS COME TO AMERICA AND WORK WITH THE KKK ALL THE WHILE CLAIMING TO BE IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE BLACK COMMUNITY. THAT’S THE TRUTH.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Rdawta/ Rdawta

dreamkeeper or whatever you call urself. Yes I am an African, but i was born in amerikkka dear, so all that immigrant backlash you reaking here don’t have anything to do with the subject at hand. so your observation is irrelevant of immigrants coming to amerikkka, there would be no “amerikkka” if it weren’t for the immigrants. next time you go eat out see if that’s true.
lastly this discussion was on V.Williams’s statement regarding “whites saving the day” in their films, and how tired this theme continues to be in Hollywood films….and she’s not lying and that’s the truth. lastly, i would much rather live in a Black African country than in amerikkka any day sweets –so kiss my black african continent.

I WAS JUST ON THE OTHER MESSAGE BOARD THE OTHER DAY WHEN SOMEBODY SAID THEY RELATED MORE TO THE “BLIND SIDE” TYPE OF FAMILY THEN PRECIOUS AND I DON’T WAN’T TO COMPARE MYSELF TO EITHER MOVIE; ALTHOUGH BOTH OF THEM WERE TRYING TO GET ACROSS A POSITIVE MESSAGE THAT PEOPLE CAN ESCAPE FROM ROUGH CIRC**STANCES, I STILL FELL AS THOUGH THERE IS A BIAS IN HOLLYWOOD AMONGST OTHER THINGS, BUT ALL I KNOW IS THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE IS HEATED OVER BOTH OF THESE MOVIES. MO’NIQUE WON SUPPORTING ACTRESS FOR PRECIOUS AND SANDRA BULLOCK WON BEST ACTRESS FOR BLIND SIDE. SMH!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/RayAlonzo/ RayAlonzo

Vanessa makes it sounds like the film was based on fiction. This films is not propaganda, the fact is this family cared enough about Oher to help him. How can people co-sign that “The Blindside” is propaganda when the movie is based on true events? I get it, some of y’all do not like white people but don’t let that blind you to the facts of what this family done for this man.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Rdawta/ Rdawta

Even if the film is based on truth, the propaganda of it is what fits so well in the Hollywood paradigm of stereo typing Blacks one way or another. I’m not saying there aren’t good-hearted white folks out there, sure there are (counting fingers), but Hollywood is vested in such dramas whether we agree with them or not. They need us, yes us, and the rest of the sheeple to continue to believe in that dynamic. What Vanessa said is true, and we’ve seen it in countless films over and over. What we don’t see is Black ppl being independent thinkers and doers in H-Wood films, i forgot, H-Wood doesn’t green light that.

Society is a mess the fact that they sen someone in need everyone thinks back! When they were thinking forward and no looking at color they were looking at a child! If a black family was to take in a white kid that turned into a success what would the story be then!

Im black and it infuriates me when so many black people cry foul over stupid things like this but don’t get out there and try to make it better. the movie wasn’t about being black or white it was about a woman seeing that this “child” needed help and offering what she had to help him. It’s comments like the one Vanessa Williams made that make both races think that people in the story don’t exist. It’s comments like that stop black and whites from helping each other and keeps the stereotypes and racism alive. For god’s sake our president is black and white don’t yall think it’s time to stop comparing the races. Nothing’s ever going to change with attitudes like that. If you have a problem with the way hollywood’s doing things get out there and make it better stop sitting on you butt and complaining. Give them more stories to talk about more movies to make but don’t crucify this family because they’re wealthy and took in a black child. That’s not what the story was about and I’m sure that’s not why they did it.

She is absolutely right. That movie is just like Dangerous Minds and all the other “Nice white lady saves the downtrodden negro” movies. What’s even funnier is that they took liberties with the book and elevated the Sandra Bullock character even more in the forefront for the movie to establish that point.

But that’s okay. I suppose these self-righteous sorts would rather see a fairy tale movie like this than see a movie that deals with the harsh realities of our world.

THANK YOU MS. WILLIAMS!! It’s about time someone in black hollywood stepped up and make this statement. Even though Sandra Bullock did a great job in the movie, but it still portrayed the same old tired theme in Hollywood. The “white family saving the black (and inner city kids)” movie seems “touching” to an audience that’s mostly white. What’s dangerous about this theme is that it makes it seem like black people are helpless, hopeless and that we can’t take of ourselves without whites being evolved. In a way, it kind of ignites the “house negro” mentality and applauds dependency. If Monique said that Precious could be a white, latino, etc., then when is that movie coming out? LOL My point is that black images should be somewhat balanced and praised when it’s not always negative. Why didn’t movies like Malcolm X or What’s Love Gotta Do With It win an Oscar for Best Actor/Actress BUT Monster’s Ball, Training Day and now Precious (negative images of black) won Oscars? Make you wonder huh?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/odoggz/ odoggz

Hey, if the whites save the say so much, pretty soon people will actually believe it. By the way things are with many “up and coming” people today, these smart people with great jobs and such, they’re going the white way, so someone’s believing the hype.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Cgard79/ Cgard79

I agree with Vanessa Williams. The legacy of Hollywood is based entirely of racism and shutting the door on other minorities. Movies that showcase the versa vice scenario do not get made in Hollywood. Just ask such actors as Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee. When making Malcolm X the production company pulled out off financing the film. Thus he went to his African-America friends in Hollywood to finish the movie. Denzel Washington when producing Antwan Fisher had to cast himself in the role and take a pay-cut to get the move made. Will Smith said on Oprah “they can’t put him with a black actress in a film they still need a white face”. Despite what you believe go watch those old black and white movies and you will see the roles African-American people were given. Please read an Ossie Davis or Ruby Dee (still has not one an Oscar has been in the business for over 35 years) interview and how they were treated while shooting films. Yes we have a black President but did you not see the Swastikas and the Obama is Hitler posters being held at rallies or Harry Reid calling him colored in a book. Nonetheless yes it is a good move but the sentiment is one that is notoriously reflective in Hollywood “the great white hype”. Finally yes we all need to contribute more to our community go volunteer, be a mentor, become an adoptive or foster parent. SN: More gay and lesbian couples adopt African-American children than heterosexual white couples. More white couples are adopting children of Asian descent.

@prettyeyes_1982, i’m not going to lie ‘The Blind Side’ is a good movie with a positive message about a Republican family helping out this homeless kid and creating a home for him in which he never had before, but i think, well i know why everybody is feeling some type of way when it comes down to how this movie was portrayed. It’s gives the image of a white family coming to the rescue of young African-American Boy in which people believe it gives out this notion that the only way a black person can be rescued is by a white person in which we all know is not true, but that is the image that is being played before our eyes. However, I agree to disagree, while that may be true that Hollywood is bias against black people, sometimes we have to learn how to seperate Performance from Politics. And i know that’s going to be hard for our community when everytime i turn on the t.v there is some white person adopting a poor homeless black child from an undeveloped country when there are plenty homeless white children out here in the United States. At first I was like whatever let them adopt the child if they want too but it was becoming a trend, everytime you turn around there was this different white actor or actress or even singer adopting a black child. Don’t get me wrong i love all races and i like white people as well so i’m not coming from a standpoint in which i don’t like white people at all but it does get to you when your are constantly being shown this imagery of a black person being “rescued” by a white person. But i’m going to seperate politics from performance and go with performance because this movie does have an overall positive message in it. But i want to know this and this has nothing to do with this movie but from what i see on t.v and on the internet. How would they feel if they saw a bunch of black people adopting only white children!

Ha! Vanessa won’t be invited back…..
    She was telling the truth.
P.S. that boy was not homeless when the family decided to “take him in”. He was living with a man in Memphis who wasn’t rich but provided for him. Now what that family saw was an opportunity. The boy was a killer football player in high school and they recognized that. Now this whole benevolent white family storyline is old and tired and is used to reinforce exactly what Mrs. Williams stated.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TheresNoneLikeMe/ TheresNoneLikeMe

I don’t agree with what Vanessa had to say. This was a movie based on a true story. It’s not about white people saving the day. It’s about God sending people to help you in your time of need whether they’re white or black. Some of yall are reading too much into this sh*t. Ask yourselves this, would the movie had been anymore interesting if a black family stepped up to the plate? I don’t think so, because it’s rare that something like that would happen. I’m not saying I wouldn’t like for it to happen. This is just a story based on true events that I think was a great idea to share with the world.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blknall/ blknall

    @TheresNoneLikeMe
This movie did to you what it was suspose to do. It “Blind Sided” you cuz if u can’t see the message it’s sending then u’ve been blind sided. Blacks help other blacks all the time but u never see them makin movies bout it. Instead, we get the impression that we can’t trust our own ppl from movies like this. Tyler Perry once said everything he’s achieved he achieved from the help of black ppl and he gives back with his movies. Amen to Vennessa for being one of the few black celebrities to tell the truth bout white hollywoods need to feel needed

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

Those other three made valid points, but totally missed what Ms. Williams was saying. The fact is, we know this story happens in all races, but do you think that film would have gotten the accolades that it did, if the family was made up of Morgan Freeman, Angela Basset, and the child was (insert any white child actor here)? The story would not have been believed. I find it EXTREMELY interesting though, that Precious was an all white play in the UK, but when brought to the US they turned the cast all black. I wonder if this has ever happened in the reverse? Try and get an all black cast to star in a movie with a positive message, that was originally written for whites, and I contend, that it NEVER hits the silver screen. Hollywood has been the biggest culprit portraying blacks in a negative light for the past 100 years!!

@Deejo. I give you credit for the Wiz, except the movies were drastically different in their meaning and message. The original Wiz was a commentary on the economic system and the history of money. The Wiz was essentially, singers, dancers and comedians shuffling and cooning. You will have to come with more than one example in 100 years to make a convincing argument against the point.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

Meant to say, the Original, Wizard of Oz.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

@itsmeChrissy901…yes he was homeless when they took him in…i know he was being cared for at the beginning by that man and that he was forced to let him go because he couldn’t afford to take care of him anymore so that’s why he became homeless. Remember in the movie when he was carrying around that little sack full of clothes and he was hanging around the laundrymat so he can get his clothes washed well that was because he was living on the streets and he had no home. So when i said he was homeless well he was homeless because that’s where i’m starting from as far as the story line goes. Did you watch the movie closely because that was the main reason why they took him in because he didn’t have a home; plus they son knew him because they went to the same school together if i’m not mistaken and what really grab their attention was when they saw him picking up trash from the bleeches after the schools basketball game and saw him walking in the pouring rain. So sweetheart i saw the movie just like you did but i was starting from that point in which the story line started to tie all together and how he became apart of their family.

Thank you RedBoneLibra19. I can see if it was a made up story all along. Naw, it’s a true freakin story dang! I agree somewhat with you blknall, but you’re missing the point of what I’m saying. I know that black people help other black people, but a lot of it is not unconditional. We as black we sho nuff bring that sh** back up one way or another! LMAO! You gots to agree with me on that. • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

i agree with her…and although i love sandra bullock’s movies…nothing against her at all…and the movie was great…but….what vanessa williams is talking about…is the same political subliminal messages that are still around…and probably more so because we have a black president…and you guys know it’s true!!! but what she is saying is that if you look at oscar night…and i promise i’m not gonna comment on it again…because it makes my brain hurt…really…but…if you look at oscar night…monique wins an oscar for.the ignorant welfare recipient who is abusing her child and letting her child be abused only with an award later the ‘white woman’ comes and saves the day…and we wonder why there are so many celebrities coming out making ‘racial’ statements even calling the first lady out as a damn chimp!!! and then you want to get offended and shocked? look at how we are portrayed and continued to be portrayed in the media…you haven’t seen anything yet! we never hear about the the positives of the black family and particularly the black male….monique is another black actor who we will say…out of all the roles that she has done in her career…they chose another stereotypical role to ‘praise’…so i’m with vanessa williams on that….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

and just to add…yeah the ‘the blind side’ was based off of a book…but so was ‘precious’…15 years ago…it’s just that one is positive and uplifting and the other is highly degrading and stereotypical…

i completely agree with Vanessa Williams and I wish they had let her finish making her point. But I feel like as black people we help each other everyday. There are some great stories of us reaching out and picking up the next struggling brother or sister yet those stories will never see the light of day on film. Because Hollywood only makes films about us if a white person is the hero. It paints a false picture and ignores the true heroes in our own community.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ladymizvee/ ladymizvee

Oh. My. Goodness. The Blind Side was based on a true story. So if the foster care system was failing you and you were a teenager with no place to go, and a family took you in and gave you a caring home, with nurturing and support, and you grew up and told your story, and it was made into a movie, would you want to see people tearing it down just because the family that took you in was of another race? Maybe it was another story of the good white family helping a poor black person, but so what? Would you have rather they treated him badly so you could have another reason to stay mad at white people?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Esoteric_Dredz/ Esoteric_Dredz

I do agree with some of the commenters…..Read the book…So you can see how the movie producers totally took Lee Ann Tuhoy’s role and elevated it way beyond the true story to 1) Get Sandra an Oscar and 2) Fit the movie into the Hollywood format of the virtuous white lady saving the savage dark youth

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NYGIRL4EVER/ NYGIRL4EVER

I can understand what Vanessa is saying. We all know that Hollywood always adds their spin to it. Micheal Oher himself was upset that they made it seem like he knew nothing about football at all. What I chose to make sure my child takes away from this movie is that no matter who is not in your corner or around sometime if at all you can be somebody because there is always someone else there to pick up where that missing person left you. Always just because life is not so kind to you does not mean you have to let that be how you treat others. Micheal had no one to really take care of him but he was big on protecting everyone else.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mal111111/ mal111111

I guess what makes it so disturbing is, there are white people that get help like this from other white people every day. What makes this story note worthy. What makes this story an academy award winning flick. What makes the true story of a white family helping an African American male ten times different than the story of a white family helping one of their own kind. Other than whites trying to celebrate and make themselves feel good about themselves, or bring to the attention of the American Public “See, we aren’t all stereotypical like you think”, then I have to agree with the majority. There are plenty of other African American athletes with more tragic stories of making it big and we don’t celebrate their accomplishments with a movie. The last one I remember was Brian’s Song. Make a doc**entary of Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, or Venus Williams. What about the athletes from Africa who escaped apartheid to come to America and make it big in the NBA. I guess it’s not interesting and noteworthy unless a white family helps them along the way.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/freelancepimp/ freelancepimp

Coming from a half white woman, I guess she has more right to speak on it than anybody. Also, you guys should read up on the controversy over how they actually “helped” him and were investigated by the NCAA. The help they so called gave them was so they could get something in return and not just the joys of being benevolent.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/flyfisher_20750/ flyfisher_20750

I really don’t know. Which side do want to take? Do you adopt Vanessa’s take (and one I’m sure has broad support), or is there a case for saying it really shouldn’t be about black and white. Can it just be about a family in a position to assist someone in need, who do so and the individual who succeeds on his own merits? The Tuohy’s in Blind Side gave Michael Oher a base from which to make his way? They certainly didn’t turn him into a little imitation white man. I’ve only seen about half of the movie, but that’s the impression I’ve gotten so far. There are the two sides and I can understand both of them. For me personally, I’ve gotten more help in my life from black folks than I ever have gotten from whites. Most of my mentors have been black males (deans of my college, my basketball coach, several of my senior commanders in the Army), perhaps because I’ve always found acceptance among blacks, far more so than among whites. I know Oher while still close to the family that adopted him, wanted little to do with the film once it had been gone out to the general public. I believe he told the Baltimore Sun reporter something to the affect that he’d rather be known for his football, than for those hard times before the Tuohy’s came into his life. Remember, for him this is all very recent. This was his rookie year with The Ravens. So the trauma isn’t that far in the past. The only issue I take with Vanessa is that this is a true story. It’s not the fiction of some Hollywood screenwriter. Do we not do thes sorts of films? This isn’t an only case, nor is this subject one sided. My daughter’s principal (African and Islamic) has taken in a number of troubled youth in, black, white, and latino, and raised them as his own. Just because he never got a movie deal shouldn’t make his contributions irrelevant to our community. I’d like to believe that this movie won awards because this message got through, that the performances were genuine and that’s all, but I realize it’s about the money as well and the issues Vanessa raises. Maybe I’m still naive, even at my age. I have great respect for Vanessa and for her work. I’m just not sure she has the stronger argument here. I think we should make films or doc**entaries of our heroes, whether they’re athletes, politicians, teachers, doctors, teachers, astronauts, whatever and show them to all our kids, especially the ones who need to see what the posibilities are, what they can aspire to, what they can dream of. We seemed to have singled out Oher, but there are many other cases of people overcoming adversity through hard work and with or without a helping hand. These stories should emphasize the accomplishments and they should come from every background, so everyone can relate. Then who cares about what color or culture is involved. The message to our young should be you CAN succeed, you CAN make it, dream high, help is available, here are real life examples.

Well this is how i feel, he was left with NOTHING, wandering the streets, having NO place to go or sleep ONLY the clothes on his back, eating food off the bleachers (ok whether or not that was true) and a caring family took him in because NO ONE else would and pretty much left abandoned and folks have a problem. Ok fine, yes movies can take the whole story out of context no doubt, i will agree with that. I doubt when they saw him in the rain or at the gym the first thing that ran through their mind was “oh lets take him cause he gonna be a great football player” I doubt that. I think they looked at him as a child who is left homeless and parentless. Why get mad when obviously no one else wanted him or could put him up. It’s blunt to say but its the truth, who else was there to help him? Only himself and the family know really the true story of it all and i don’t see him complaining about it now. Maybe that the story was off just a bit. Seriously though for everyone who wants to make it a black white thing, WOULD YOU have taken him in? There are plenty of children, of all races left homesless, would anyone assist them or offer them a warm plate of food, a new pair of shoes, school supplies or shyt even a damn hug! I mean what would anyone else up in here do? Would you stop like her and ask him while he is standing in pouring ran if he had a place to go for the night……..i bet ya you wouldn’t! Why is it that folks can’t do a humane thing without getting yelled at cause i see it like this, white folks do something nice towards another human being regardless of color its a problem, and if they don’t then its a problem. You can’t ever win! Do folks ever think for once that YES there are kind folks out there who actually care about people period, no matter what color they are.

As true as the story was, it was geared to assuage White guilt by showing a virtuous act. Michael Oher might as well have been Shrek, for as much dialogue as they gave him…PEACE.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/grambulance/ grambulance

Personally, I liked the film. However, I can see how the film comes off as a “white guilt” film. However, the fact remains that “The Blind Side” was based on a true story. I wish more people of ALL colors were open to fostering or adopting children who need loving homes.

On another note; when will someone put a muzzle on Hasselbeck? Really, she was a contestant on Survivor before her gig on The View. What can she tell us about anything? She’s truly a pitbull in lipstick.

look ppl yall missing her point… no matter how true the story is the fact still remains that its always the same s**t. black person doing bad and need to be saved by a white person or family. how many movies do you see about white people down bad and being saved by another race??? I’ll wait……. very few if any. just becuz its true doesnt mean that all you show. its a million stories of black people being on their s**t and staying on they s**t. but how many of them are made into movies??? I’ll wait again… very few. get real out here. REAL TALK white people get the point of view of black people from the s**t they see on t.v. so when you see movies like this all the time, what you think their point of view is??? helpless. like we cant do s**t without them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Lifeiswutumakit/ Lifeiswutumakit

Vanessa Williams makes a great point. This concept is as old as dirt. It started from the story of white Jesus and a thousand more stories have been created since then. And yes I’m a follower of the Bible, but some white dude walking around a continent that the sun shines the hardest on is just not something I choose to believe. But I’m a check out this movie to see what kind of vibe I get. This is definitely an old concept. Whites love stories like this, Jews create them in Hollywood, and black folks play the bud of an ongoing joke. And I doubt within the next 40 years, the same amount of time in which whites will be the minority in this country, that we will see a change in Hollywood. Until there is a change in power, nothing is ever really going to change. Don’t expect the same type of people to do different things…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lavenderga/ lavenderga

I saw the film. I liked it. I like football. It was the story of Michael Oher. He said 98%of the story was true.He had to sign on for the movie to be made as well. Enough said. I error on his side. And I agree with a fellow post. Who would’ve taken this child from the streets and helped him?And why didn’t ANYONE in his blood family do the same? How many babies/children are languishing in adoption hell? Why are there billboards calling black babies “Endangered Species”? If someone loves and cares for a child that’s not your own, they answered God’s charge for them to do as such.Stop hating. More Power to them.

“The Blind Side” fits perfectly into Hollywood’s format of “The White People Savior” films like Avatar, Dangerous Minds, Gran Torino, Half Nelson, Wildcats, Freedom Writers, and the list goes on and on and on. The difference between “The Blind Side” vs. the rest of the bunch is “The Blind Side” is creative non-fiction. I grow increasingly fatigued of these kinds of movies; and if I know about a movie beforehand that meets this format, I won’t watch it. It’s degrading. If a person continuously watches movies that send a message that people like him are worthless, then where would that leave that person. I think it can cause an individual to self destruct. So, Mrs. Williams hit on a significant point about this movie; however, I must ask these questions, “Why do we watch movies that degrade us? Why do we asked Hollywood to tell our stories, to put our lives on the big screen from their point-of-view?” Our most educated ask for more blacks on television, and then Flavor Flav swings into the room on a rope with a gigantic clock attached to his chest screaming, “What’s up, boy?” Then they put blacks in token roles with goofy dialogue, and every decision the black character makes is the wrong one. It’s tired. I’m tired, but to asked Hollywood to make these changes ain’t in the context of “Do The Right Thing.”
I’ll be damned before I asked any man, especially the white man, to write my story or trust him with my image or to tell my history. Why would I do that? Why would you do that? Have you seen the images of black people Hollywood has embraced over the last seventy-five years? Every last person on this thread has the ability to tell wonderful stories that make us laugh, cry, and scream at the television. We all need to be working on books that tell all kinds of amusing tales about our lives living in America. But if we ask Hollywood and its band of chumps to do it for us, we’d have a bunch of crap that doesn’t humanize us, that treats us like a bunch of Monkeys, and that continues to degrade us. The reason we are having this discussion is that we aren’t telling our stories. All of you have stories to tell, have failures, and triumphs that would make good books, and possibly good movies, but you’re not putting pen to paper. That’s ashame. “Do The Right Thing.” Write your own story.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mzzladyd/ mzzladyd

I agree with some of the comments as many blacks who complain about the “white savior” syndrome, would they have helped out this kid? The fact they are white does not take away from the fact that they used their resources to help this kid. They could have ignored him and he could have still been on the streets or dead. I think that we as the black community have to turn back to God and put forth more of an effort to help our own rather than complaining about the “white savior” issue. There are alot of white families adopting hatian orphans after this earthquake, are there any black families/communites doing this? How many of us are helping the Michael Oher’s of the world? or are we to busy critcizing families like this one that the movie was based on? I get tired of these movies too, but it will not change until WE change how we care for our own and perhaps make movies that reflect that we can truly overcome with God’s help. There is a book out right now I think it is called ‘The Bond” about 3 young black men from broken homes who make a pact to hold each other accountable as they worked to become doctors. They succeeded against the odds and there are many other stories out there like this and if we dont start telling these stories, our stories (instead of wasting our money on buffonery movies like soul plane and friday) we will continue to have our stories told through the eyes of “white saviors”.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shenandoahOK/ shenandoahOK

I actually read through every post in this thread for some strange and ominous reason, and one question stuck with me, “Would you have adopted this kid?” Honestly, I have to come out with an emphatic, I don’t know. Seriously, I don’t know. If my hypothetical son knew the kid, it’s more likely than not that I would have adopted him; but if I just saw some poor kid on the street, I’d probably just drive by and pretend he’s invisible. That’s the reality of it. I don’t mind white people adopting kids from other races. Family is what it is, but blacks adopting little Haitian children don’t make the news. The business of news is to make money, and black people adopting black people isn’t something the media can sell in my humble opinion. Black man knocks over a convenience store, now that’s something the news media can use.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/infinite_question/ infinite_question

very true statement. we are seeing black culture evolve before our very eyes. in order to move past racist hollywoods idea of us, we need to ask these types of questions and answer them 4 ourselves and independantly evaluate what types of films cast us in a positive versus the normal negative backdrop. at that point, we can vote with our debit cards and decide which movies to support. as long as we continue to finance these racist film companies (by buying tickets) while quietly complaining about the sterotypical formula, they will keep making these mockeries of black culture, demonizing any type of dissenting voices that antagonize their racist opinions. lets vow to stop black exploitation in all forms of media.

@ ShenandoahOK……I have to agree with you on most of your comments. I also have to admit that after seeing this movie and hearing all the controversy about the movie I asked the same question…..Would you have adopted this kid? However after reading other comments I had to admit that there was more to it than the adoption question.
@ Cgard79…..you made some very valid points a lot of which I was not even aware of.

What is so sad is this is a country full of couch potatoes who are continuously waiting on the latest movies and shows to come out. I guess if you dont like who you are then you would expect somebody else to be responsible about how you view yourself and/or get mad when what is shone negates who you are as a person. There is no law that says you have to watch movies and watch tv. There are plenty of other things in life to do besides that.

the problem between race relations is not going to end until we truly stop seeing the color on each others skin and appreciate every person and every situation for what it is and not automatically see only the white and black part of it….it continues to be such a touchy subject because the first thing people see when they see anything in the media or on tv is the color of someone’s skin. segregation is still very apparent and its due to all races, all races are to blame because we just cant get ourselves to see past the physical. it was a true story about a young man who was left alone and without guidance, a woman seen an opportunity where she had the ability to help and she did…that is a great thing..period…i think the biggest point of this young man’s story is that there are so many young children in the U.S. who literally don’t have a place to go and who live in limbo within our terrible foster system. it is always a great thing when a family can open up their home and provide a safe and loving place to take in any child who is in need of that. that is what this story is really about…not about the color on their skin.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LadyZeta/ LadyZeta

I think Vanessa is right. Hollywood has a habit of making the “White people riding in on a white stallion to save the day” movies. Just look at the movie Amistad. The movie should have been about the slaves pursuing their freedom, but it was about the struggles of their white attorney. or movies about a young white teacher “saving” a gang infested group of African Americans and Latinos. I teach, and I see African American teachers and Latino teachers going above and beyond for their students. But, I never see it in a movie. Yes The Blind Side was a true story and yes it was a great story, however, there are thousands of stories of the same thing happening in African American families. Yes, stats say we don’t adopt enough of our children. Those stats are deceiving. African Americans tend to adopt their own, just not formally. How many kids do you know that live with grandmother, aunt, great aunt, cousin, brother, sister, neighbor etc? We as a people take care of our own. It’s sad that images of us are always negatively put into media. What’s sadder is that many of us take these images and run with them. Instead of working to fix them, we complain out “ignorant Black people” or “White devils”. We have people screaming America is evil. Quite frankly, while America has its problems I would much prefer to be in America than in a 3rd world country where I could be killed or imprisoned for just writing this. If you really want to fix race relations, then go out and volunteer in a school. Coach a basketball team in an inner city neighborhood. Start a youth center so kids have some place to go after school. Write a grant to do job training for families who are struggling. Get you minister involved and see about getting him (or her) to expand family and youth programs. But, most importantly, EITHER GET UP AND DO SOMETHING, STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE NOT DOING.

How about showcasing the black family that actually adopted or foster black/brown children and raised above the obstacles in life? She is an A List celeb so nothing stopping her to get all this off the ground. Since her show Ugly Betty soon run it course maybe she should sit down, hit up online and find enlightening stories of black family to make into movies. Action speak louder than words.

OMG! First, some people here need to learn to use words correctly and learn the difference between words : ad and add – they are pronounced the same, yet have two different meanings, here and hear, their and there and last you should say now AND then NOT now in then.

Now that I’ve said that, let me say this. We can criticize this film for its portrayal of a white family as the rescuers of a black person, but there is one thing that overrides any criticism we may have – this is a true story. This really happened. Now are we upset that a white family cared enough to help or are we upset that there are not a lot of movies about blacks doing the same? If we are really upset about not seeing movies like The Blind Side featuring black families doing this, then we need to create movies that showcase that instead of creating movies like ATL, Brooklyn’s Finest, Training Day, etc. There is nothing stopping young black filmmakers from showcasing things differently. We can’t get upset when a movie comes out that is about a true story! That is ridiculous. Instead, we should all be grateful that there are people who are willing to look beyond color and help someone who needs help. Now, for those of us who do not make films, I want you to ask yourself this question. When is the last time you took your time or used your money to help someone you didn’t know? When is the last time you cared enough to go to a nursing home and volunteer some time or mentor a child or feed the homeless? We spend a lot of time passing judgement instead of doing something productive with our time and money. Instead of criticizing others who help us, lets get out there and help ourselves. Right now, we aren’t doing a great job of doing that.

bulls**t, bulls**t, it just like every other story in hollywood since the beginning of time. every movie has to have some white protagonist come along ans save the day. Just like avatar, there was that tree who was suppposed to hear and be the natives deity, and yet the deity only heard the white boy, he had the warrior heart, what you mean the black cant have a warrior heart? We are the original warrior, it is all the jewish white hollywod bulls**t they always push out that whites are demi gods, more beautiful, more maketable, blah blah blah, blacks come up with something they take it, we started rapping they give the white boy the oscar, then they passified us by giving it to 3,6 mafia the next time when they did not deserve to win it. They push justin timbaerlake, george micheal beffore him when they tried to sing black, knowing both dont care about black folks LOL now they have that little s**t justin beaver, beater, whatever he name is. gimme a break! but the thing that really is a thorn is all theses beautiful black women going for the white boy, and dont give that bs love is love because sisters hate it when black men date white woman, i do too!!! The princess and the frog s**t, avatar and zoe zaldana white boy ass kissing ass, every show you see bad girls club, mercy, movies, something new, all this s**t with the white man as the leading man saving the beautiful black girl. thenwhen they make films for black men, the role: thugs, rison in mate, ex con, no love interest, coon. So yes Vanessa you are right, and more jewish hollywood bulls**t.

The people that agree aren’t saying that The Blind Side and the story itself are the problem….. it’s just that movies of the “white savior” are too much of the norm. If it wasn’t then nobody would have much to say about this movie. This is more of an observation than a cry of racism. I’d prefer to see a doc**entary on him than this movie, but that’s just me and what I tend to enjoy over Hollywood movies. Let’s be real…. if the roles were reversed would this movie have even come about? There are “individual” whites that have helped “individual” blacks but their overall community has never given Black America much of anything without them having to fight, die, etc. for it. How about a movie about someone like Khadijah Williams? I know, I know….. too much to ask.

She’s right! I agree with her and am surprised that she would even be the type to say anything thing, interesting. But yes, The Blind Side is just another “white savior” movie and I am not interested: no matter how good the acting is and even if the is based on a true story-who gives a ish? Same thing for Precious, got people walking around her thinking this movie is based on a true story when it isn’t, it was an adapted screenplay from a fictional book by author Sapphire (research) people, research. What does it have in that movie ? All the dark-skinned people are bad and the light-skinned people are good…they have Monique in the Mammie role and they have the father as the “bad black man who rapes on his daughter”, They wanted to put that movie out so everyone would forget about Mackienzie Phillips(A white girl who confessed that her father raped her for several years). Now I am not saying that the scenarios in the blind side and precious don’t happen and are non-existent in our community but they need to stop putting these f’d up movies out trying to make it seem as if this is a fad in the black community. It pisses me off and WE need to stop supporting this bulls**t for-real.

I stand in agreement with Ms.Williams.

This is just…sign…a “repeat” of other “white” shows that, through “careful” television programming depict: “Father” in the face of a euro-clown running up in there to “save a black kid!” So yes, I agree with Vanessa. If a euro-clown is not in the midst? Surely, it will FAIL.

For example, the little Nigerian girl that Angelina/Brad adopted one day. It’s a given that she WILL experience “culture shock” one day, although more than likely she will be kept “insulated.”

Many, not all BLACK Psychologists, have long noted and agreed that placement of a BLACK child in a situation such as this can prove to be detrimental to the psyche of the child. Many have grown up filled with self-hate, resentment and rejection of our race or worse, perceive white culture and dictims as “absolute.”

Vanessa did not sugar-coat it and for this, she gets props.

Regina King To Black Women: “Date Outside Your Race”

REGINA KING IS SAYING THAT BECAUSE SHE IS A VERY FILTHY BLACK WOMAN WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO HER BODY (in other words she is a hoe and those hoes will just about sleep around with anything just like some of you black men will) SAME ON YOU BLACK RACE OF PEOPLE WHEN IT COMES TO HAVING SEX “SEX IS A DISEASE”.

    THE TRUTH IS:

YOU BLACK PEOPLE SEEMS TO NOT BE AFRAID OF CATCHING THOSE INFECTIOUS VIRUSES AND DISEASES THAT ARE OUT THEIR THAT THOSE OTHER RACE OF PEOPLE CARRY THAT YA’LL SHOULDN’T HAVE (in other words you black people are prone to catching many different kind of diseases because of ya’ll sexual preferences)

VIDEO: Black Men Seek White Women Because We’re Angry

    @sophinal40

THOSE WHITE WOMEN BREATH DON’T SMELL LIKE PUPPY DOG BREATH BECAUSE PUPPY DOG BREATH DON’T SMELL LIKE DOG SH!T.

THAT IS A LIE AND THAT IS A LAME EXCUSE FOR THE REASON THAT YOU BLACK MEN SEEK THOSE FLEA BITTEN WHITE WOMEN.

THE ONLY REASON THAT YOU BLACK MEN WILL SLEEP AROUND WITH THOSE FILTHY FLEA BITTEN MICRO WORMS AND HIV/AIDS IN THEIR BOOTY HOLE IS BECAUSE YA’LL HEARD ABOUT HOW YA’LL COULD GET SOME EASY P*SSY SINCE THOSE BLACK WOMEN WEREN’T GIVING IT UP TO YA’LL LIKE YA’LL WANTED FOR THEM TO GIVE IT UP TO YA’LL SO,STOP THE LYING YOU BUNCH OF SILLY BLACK MEN.

FOR ONE THOSE STUPID AZZ WHITE WOMEN HAD YOU BLACK MEN BELIEVING THAT THEY WERE MUCH BETTER WOMEN FOR YA’LL BUT,HOW SO WHEN THEY ARE WHITE WOMEN? YOU KNOW WOMEN OF ANOTHER RACE OF PEOPLE,WOMEN THAT DO NOT LOOK ANYTHING LIKE A BLACK WOMAN,WOMEN WHO DO NOT EVEN SMELL OF A BLACK WOMAN,WOMEN WHO DO NOT EVEN GIVE BIRTH TO A BLACK BABY,WOMEN WHO COULD NOT EVEN RAISE YA’LLS KIDS LIKE BLACK KIDS,WOMEN WHO DO NOT EVEN COOK LIKE BLACK WOMEN,WOMEN WHO DO NOT EVEN CLEAN A HOME LIKE A BLACK WOMAN AND FINALLY A WOMAN WHO IS NOT EVEN BORN A WHOLE HUMAN INSTEAD SHE IS BORN HALF HUMAN AND HALF DOG FOR THE REASON OF THE FOUL DOG ODOR OF THEIR UNHEALTHY AND NO GOOD BODY AND FOR THE REASON OF THEM GROWING THOSE BLOOD SUCKING FLEAS/TICKS AND LICE IN THEIR FILTHY DOG HAIR….NOW HOW CAN’T YOU BLACK MEN SMELL DOG SH!T WHEN THEY BE HAVING THEIR CLOTHES OFF AROUND YA’LL OR WHEN THEY BE INSIDE OF THOSE HOSPITAL DELIVERY ROOMS GIVING BIRTH TO THEIR PUPPY WHILE THEIR LEGS ARE WIDE THE HELL OPEN.

THAT IS NOT THE SCENT OF A WOMAN THAT IS THE ODOR OF A DOG.

YOU BLACK MEN THAT ACTUALLY SLEEP AROUND WITH THOSE DOGS SMELL JUST LIKE THOSE DOGS WHICH IS DEAD DOG AND A FOUL SKUNKY ODOR WHICH MEANS THAT WHEN YA’LL PULL DOWN YA’LLS PANTS AND PULL OUT YA’LLS PEN!S YA’LL STANK JUST LIKE THEY DO.

THE MAJORITY OF YOU BLACK MEN DO NOT HAVE A BRAIN CELL FOR FOR THOSE FOUL SMELLS OR OTHER WISE YA’LL WOULD HAVE BEEN RUNNING THE HELL AWAY FROM THOSE DOGS AS SOON AS THEY HAD SPREAD THEIR LEGS OPEN TO YA’LL FOR YA’LL TO HAVE THE FILTHY DOG SEX WITH THEM….SHAME ON YOU BLACK MEN FOR RUNNING UP BEHIND THOSE OTHER RACE OF FILTHY DOGS AS IF YA’LL WERE GOING TO DIE IF YA’LL DIDN’T GET ANY OF THAT SKUNK SMELLING DOG P*SSY THAT IS KEEPING YA’LL,STANKY IN YA’LLS PANTS,SICK AND KILLING YA’LL.

I CAN TRULY UNDERSTAND THAT SOME OF THOSE THINK THAT THEY KNOW EVERY GOT DARN THING BLACK WOMEN CAN GET ON YOU BLACK MEN NERVES SOMETIMES BUT,TO GO OUT AND SLEEP AROUND WITH THOSE INFECTIOUS FLEA BITTEN PARASITE CARRYING DOGS THOUGH? OH COME ON BLACK MEN YA’LL CAN DO MUCH BETTER THEN THAT

(oh my gosh they done went and jump over those gates where those parasite carrying dogs at). AND NOW SOME OF THEM CAN NOT EVEN PULL DOWN THEIR PANTS IN FRONT OF THOSE BLACK WOMEN ANYMORE WITHOUT THAT FILTHY WHITE WOMEN DOG ODOR FLOWING THROUGH THE AIR WHILE FUMING UP THE ROOM THAT THEY HAVE ON THEM.

THIS IS TO YOU BLACK MEN:

DON’T GO STANKING UP THE HOUSE FOR THE WHITE MAN AND HIS DOG SMELLING FILTHY WHITE HOE.

Williams argued that film only reinforces the notion that African-Americans need whites in order to succeed.

Agreed! Just an updated version of “Different Strokes.”
