La La Vazquez perfectly fits the description of an independent woman, even if she shares her bed with her multimillionaire baller fiancé Carmelo Anthony. “I don’t think people understand how hard I’ve worked to achieve the things I have,” she tells Latina.

She tells us in the April 2010 issue of Latina magazine,

“Even with all that I’ve accomplished on my own, I know the story out there about me: ‘[Carmelo] ain’t gonna marry her. She got that ring but now he’s making her wait. He don’t really love her…’ For once…I’d like to tell the story as it is. Not as it’s told.”

What does her fiance have to say?

“I wasn’t making her wait. If anything, I was waiting for her to slow down. She was doing her own thing, handling her business and we were happy. When it was time to take it to the next step we did. Period.”

So has he ever doubted for a minute that La La Vazquez is Mrs. Right, one with life, mindset (and bank account) of her own? Melo speaks slowly, but surely:

“I wouldn’t be with her if it was any other way.” “Understood?”

Lala Vasquez and Carmelo Anthony Set Wedding Date!

LaLa Loses Her Cool At NBA Game

On her early hustle:
“I would get off the air at 6, take a shower, and go straight to school,” recalls La La of her early radio days as a 16-year-old on-air personality during the overnight shift in Atlanta. When Ludacris got his own show, La La had to hold her own as his sidekick. “They didn’t want me there,” she told Latina. “We joke about it now. But I had to fight to hang on to my spot.

And on her black Puerto Rican roots:
“The essay,” she says solemnly. “The responses hurt.” She’s speaking of a first person piece she recently wrote for Latina.com on being Puerto Rican, in which she explained that, since childhood, people have often assumed that she is black. “Which I am!” she says, almost yelling. “But I am also 100 percent Puerto Rican and I’m proud of that. People got it twisted and thought I was saying, I’’m Puerto Rican. I’m not black. That isn’t what I was saying. It’s just that when I tell someone I’m Puerto Rican, I don’t want to hear someone say, ‘You ain’t Puerto Rican. You black.’ As if I can only be one or the other. Do I look like Jennifer Lopez? No. Clearly, I’m a black woman. However you want to define that, that’s what I am. And I’m also a Spanish-speaking Puerto Rican woman. Period.”

I think Lala explained it the best…your culture is one thing and how you speak and act is another. She is a Puerto Rican woman but she appears black and that is what people classify her as. Basically, Puerto Ricans are of African descent; point blank.

the last time i checked, africans were kidnapped and taken to the island of puerto rico, so she is an african woman. most of as black ppl in america hold our slave masters last names….we don’t know our original names or tongues, we are what they told us to be. So she is puerto rican because that’s where she was born and her parent’s lineage is from. I’m glad she acknowledges she is Black, when a lot of “us” are very confused about who we are, and claim otherwise.

She is African Puerto Rican. Just like when we use the term African American. Just be cause a person is from Puerto Rico does not mean they are black. Along with Africans who were brought to the island as slaves, the French, German, Spaniards, and Chinese also migrated there. And there was also native inhabitants already living on the island when it was “discovered”. So to say that all Puerto Ricans are African is incorrect.

Born2winn…if an Asian or Italian moves to Puerto Rico and has a family…what race is their family?

I mean if she says she’s 100% rican that’s like me saying I’m a 100% cuban or dominican or trinidadian. I could still be “black” though. Skin color wise she’s black…racially she may be mixed

Do your thing La La and don’t explain nothing to nobody about your relationship that is your business and need no explanation. You seem to have things together and so count it as a blessing and go on and live your life to the fullest. If people cannot understand or appreciate that then they need to deal with it because there is something wrong with them.

I don’t think reducing being a Black woman to just skin color works, IMO. If she is Puerto Rican, then she is Puerto Rican. Pero, just because she LOOKS Black wouldn’t make her a Black woman. yea yea, I know the whole Africans dropped off in Caribbean mixing, blahsy blah blah. My point is when she said “look at me” I’m obviously a Black woman. That sounded like she thinks being a Black woman is merely a skin color. There is much more to my being a Black woman that the skin I’m in. I like La La and her attitude is great. I just think she is oversimplifying our race by reducing us to skin color only.

I’ve been listening to Lala on the radio for years, since I was like wow, 13! I remember her from her humble beginnings, when she was on the radio with Julio G., Pj Butta and Theo.. Anyway, she has come a long way, and I congradulate her for holding down her own.. Her relationship with Carmelo is none of our business.. She’s with the man, which says alot.. These chickens are just haters!!! As far as the Puerto Rican thing.. It’s not a race, it’s an ethnicity (the country the person is from).. She still of African descent (A black women) just her people are from Puerto Rico, who speaks spanish.. She’s not denying being Black.. She’s representing her heritage.. Nothing wrong with that!
I see you Lala.. Do your thing mamita!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Perionne27/ Perionne27

Mstjaye…technically not really. Puerto Rican is a nationality…not a race. If you met her…would you not identify and/or treat her as a black woman? Actually..you say black is much more than a skin color…the black power movement indicates that. But culture and skin color can be mutually exclusive

Man I had myself a dark india/negrita (oscura) PR chick for years and yes there are issues with PR light skinned vs dark too. Tego Calderon would not have called it out so loudly in his interviews with press if that wasn’t true! Ask Don Omar if he’s black, he’ll tell you he is. So after a lot of debate back and forth, my ex chick would say she was black too, after all the crap people have put her through. Cubans get the same rap. That doesn’t mean African American, but much of latin America does see the world as black and white, fuk what these people are talking in this place about they don’t see color, bullsh1t lying fuks. I’ve a victim of it, the ex was, many of my friends were/are. Mostly, people claiming to be so proud that they have blood from Spain, those are the number 1 culprits who don’t want black features in their families and hate on blacks. If you have mostly indian features with a tint of color, you are more liked/welcomed than if you’ve African features. It’s reality and when many get here to America they get a white person if they suffer from complexes related to it, or get themselves a black mate so they can finally be comfortable in their own shoes. Most go white though, because they’ve complexes about being too black where they came from.

@corneliusgreen, how do u know what La La has done all these years? Just because she is not on the news all the time or on every cover of every magazine doesn’t mean she hasn’t done anything. Obviously she has been taking care of herself and her family. That is what is most important. Not what people like you think. What have u done? Nothing. Don’t be mad because she didn’t pick you.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DaintyJen/ DaintyJen

black americans spend so much time focusing on what to label somebody as if they even know their own REAL roots. Black isn’t a race, its a term that singles out those that don’t know any better lol. there are more important things..

    yawn

How about ramping down on the nonsense about La La and do some reading for a change.
Read about the history of Puerto Rico and the (African) influence and culture of that island, then maybe some of you will be edified instead of vomiting mindless nonsense.

There are thousands of African Americans and other blacks in this country who have Puerto Rican ancestry. Why don’t some of you sit and talk with someone who is from Puerto Rico and ask them about the history of their island and how it became a–United States territory.

Before I retired from the federal government in Washington, I was the Diversity Program Manager in a Treasury Dept. agency and recruited college students from Puerto Rico to work for my agency during the summer. They come in all hues just like African Americans. People of Puerto Rican heritage are proud of who they are; maybe some of you should take a lesson from that and be proud of who (you) are and stop trippin over someone else’s identity or how they want to
    self-identify.

PBS has been doing a doc**entary on Prominent people of color. Example Quincy Jones Has more European ancestry in him than African. Looks can be deceptive huh? As Mr. Preston said so accurately. Do your research. We are not all “pure” african. We have been taught to place labels on ourselves. We as a race need to be more unified. Kudos to La La,just because you have a seed does not mean you have to marry the planter. Just make sure you keep the garden groomed so no more weeds can sneak in. Plant no more seeds until the main gardener commits to a marital union.

Wow it’s amazing how ignorant some of you are first of all here is a history lesson Puerto Rican’s are a mix of the Spaniards that invaded Puerto Rico, African who were brought there by the Spaniards and the Taino Indians that inhabited the land, the island it self was called to Boriquen it was later changed by the Spaniards to Puerto Rico which means “Rich Port” in english. Go visit the island everything about our culture has to do with our African roots for our music to skin tone we come in all shapes, sizes and colors. I am half Puertorican and half Cuban my mother was born and raised in Puerto Rico she had blond hair and green eyes her brother and sister all are a variety of color and they had the same mother and father I have an uncle who is dark skin and he is my mother’s brother here in United States people would consider my mother being American and her brother being African American its crazy the ignorance and self haterid within our own community. There is a lot of racism within the light skin vs dark skin in our community and its said because at the end of the day we all bleed the same color. So yes she would be consider in the spanish community negrita or morrera just as a olive tone person would be called a india and light tone female be referred to as a gringa. If you would look at me you would assume I was white until I speak spanish and I still to this day get ignorant comments that I speak good spanish for a white girl. I’m happy she is standing her ground and claiming who she is and correction Telemundo would hire her. One thing that is wrong with this country if you have a tan and speak spanish are automatically a Mexican there is nothing wrong with being Mexican or Latin American by if you are hispanic or took the time to learn something you will know there are many differences in the hispanic culture depending where you are from NO we don’t all eat tacos, and we do all speak a different spanish not everything has the same meaning for example for Mexicans coche means car for me it means a baby stroller. I am extremely proud of who I am and where my family came from regardless of your color you will never find another race as proud as we Boricuas are. Ignorance is not bliss look at Hollywood you would never think they are Puerto Ricans just by their name or the way they look for example: Amaury Nolasco, Berni Williams, Micheal Stuart, Tego Cardenero, Benicio Del Torro, Jimmy Smits, Esai Morales, Mike Lowell, Hector Elizondo. For the person whom made the comment about Chinese people going to PR there are a lot of orientals whom have spanish last name but if you would do research you would know spain also invaded Asia and enslaved many so they took their master last name.. ignorance isn’t always bliss! Be Blessed..
