I was at the Step Off at the Civic Center. And I think the ladies that won the competition did an amazing job and were very much on point and well coordinated. With that being said, they should not have beat the AKAs. Those ladies were amazing, creative and the steps were very very difficult. (I am not a sorority member so I am far from biased). I do think that some of it was the novelty of white women who could really step their a$$ off and bring it as well or better than some of the historically black sororities, but just because it was a unique thing to see doess not at all mean they deserved to win. Just my opinion.

I think the white girls won just because they were the anomally in the tradition….They won on merit of having the guts to try…you know..the classic ‘under dog’ story…The AKA’s looked better…

I have seen some amazing stepshows of the past decade and I am not greek, however, these ladies should have won second or third place, but not one, I am sorry, just because they are white does not make it right. I am not saying they were whack, but their movies were a bit from 2001-2003, lol. However, Alpha Phi Alpha, AKA, or Delta Sigma Theta should have won that from what I saw on YouTube seriously. Wow, I think that’s amazing and I applaud the young ladies for winning. If they were that good then I def think they deserved a standing ovation. Those girls killed it! Plain and simple. They won hands down. I never saw nothing like it in a step competition and was well executed. You have to give credit where it’s due. The standing ovation was just for an outstanding performance. Don’t worry though…the next competition will be one by a black fraternity and sorority…even if not–who cares? ! This is a competition and the best group won.

This story reminds me of an episode of MTV’s “True Life” when they did a show on black frats and sorors stepping and they featured a latina (mainly puerto rican) soror that ended up winning the competition. Those sistas were blown. LOL!!!!! But I thought their performance was just the same as the other sorors but I guess they wanted to show love and respect to them since they were an anomally. I haven’t had a chance to read all of the comments, so I am not responding to anyone in particular, but I find it real funny that the ENTIRE routine for the white team was posted and only HALF of the routine for the others. As someone who was there, the AKAs routine blew the others out of the water. So before others say that the other routines were trashy or they didn’t do anything special, please understand that EACH team had an 8-10 minute routine so what you are watching is a Snippet of the Deltas, Alphas, and AKAs. Just saying, if we are going to go that route lets be fair.

The crowd appeared to be very entertained (which the majority were black), so they obviously did their thing on that stage…and I ain’t mad at all……..Learn to love yourself and be proud of the things “you” do well, and applaud those who do good as well.

Wows it’s something about black folks always welcoming everybody with open arms but funny nobody wants to be associated with us. Well it can’t be said that White people don’t have rhythym anymore, because them White girls shut that step show down. The Matrix theme is not new, but it was better than the others especially that old Janet Jackson rythym nation intro, shoot we was doing that back in 1990. They’re steps were more intricate especially that move they did where they held each others legs and were alternating and clapping each others hands=dope. They’re outro stroll was tight too. They were just good and the others were kinda tired and not very creative.

If a white step team had not entered the contest would this even be an issue…I’m so over the racist shyt. Black, white, blue, green, purple….I was at the regionals when these girls beat out the other step teams….they did an awesome job. Congrats to them. Maybe we as a people are too comfortable when we tend to dominate ONE PARTICULAR THING….like Wayne said…don’t ever get TOO COMFORTABLE….its always somebody out there looking to take your shine…

Zeta Tau Alpha did very well. However, I dont think they should have won. I personally think the Delta’s had a better theme and a overall better performance. I watch alot of step shows at Florida A&M University and if one of our greeks did the Zeta Tau routine we would have expected alot more. We have high standards for our greeks and for everyone who is stepping. NO matter black or white they could have done better!!!

These females won for what ever reason I don’t know. Of course it only shows that the talents and skills of Black is coveted by many. They might have gotten the moves down but they couldn’t begin to understand the historic implications of the moves. This is what makes their winning so absolutley obsurd.

Its unfortunate that many Blacks don’t have such imformation at hand either. These same Blacks have been undereducated on their own history. As a result they are unable to look at the big picture and see the meaning on why this might be BS. Why would whites want to participate in venues created for and by Blacks? We were systematically excluded from all things created for and by whites.

Yet when we go on our own and devise things for ourselves they still feel the need to ingratiate themselves into our world. Why can’t we have shyt to ourselves? All the numbers of major universities created for and by whites that worked overtime to keep Blacks out lead to the creation of Historically Black universites.

Yes we eventually were allowed in these white schools but it took some people to get beat, jailed, and killed in many civil rights protests as a whole for it to happen. Yet we still have whites enrolling in Historically Black universities. I have nothing against some whites. But again can’t we have shyt to ourselves.

Come on people! I never saw a white sorority stepping in a step show in my life. African American sororities and fraternities are unique for their traditional African steps. Why now out of the blue did a white sorority wanted to anticipate in all black step contest. Come On People! It sound like money to me. I’m not saying that the white sorority wasn’t great but its the principal.

Don’t give up or lose your African American traditions to anyone. If we continue lose our traditions as African American people we begin to lose our substances of who we are. Trust me its principle behind this comment. Take a few minutes to ask a African American greek about their history and the tremendous struggles, trials and tribulations their ancestors sisters and brothers had to go through to establish their organizations, trust me after hearing African American students weren’t allowed to join any Caucasain sororities or fraternities you might be surprise to hear that.

Therefore I have the upmost respect for all greeks. This isn’t about the color of the anticipates, its about the struggle to say am greek. Frankly am surprise and shock that Sprite allowed these young ladies to compete.

Personally I’m offended that a company would go this low to not give the money to any African American Sorority or Fraternity even through Sprite were promoting a Step show which has been known as historical African American tradition.

For years African American greeks has given out scholarships to young African American high school students to attend college and donated to non profit organization within the African American communities. Especially the AKA sororities.

They’re pretty good, but honestly I’ve seen better. This kind of reminds me of amateur night at the Apollo. Whenever someone white sings and sound soulful, they get a standing ovation AND mostly likely win the whole competition. Uh…HELLO!! We have been doing the same damn thing for years and get no recognition for it. Whether it’s singing, dancing, or simply having a big ass or full lips, it’s praised with other races doing it but not the originators. People wake up why are we so impressed when someone else does the same damn thing we’ve been doing for years? C’mon son!!

I’m with WezB37. I found nothing extraordinary about that routine. I’ve stepped before, and all they were doing was some simple, basic stuff. If that had been a black sorority w/the same routine, they would not have won. Because they’re white, it’s supposed to be extraordinary, because no one expects white people to be able to do that. It’s expected of us, so it ends up not being a big deal, and in the end, we’re the ones who lose. It’s ridiculous.

Let me first say that ZTA(white girls) were hype and that was good! They stepped pretty well not flawless but good nonetheless. The steps though were NOT ORIGINAL!!!!! Steps that were featured in the show were from, but no limited to: Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Beta Sigma and Alpha Kappa Alpha.
The reason they won is 1.They gained a lot of points for crowd participation. People cheered for the fact that they were white girls, that looked half decent, not the fact that they stepped great. 2. The judges were celebrity judges, none of which were greek or had an idea of what a GOOD step show should or would look like. so the judges scores were swayed by the crowd reaction. 3. We hold the Black Organizations to a higher standard becuase we see them more frequently and like with all things you see repeatedly we down play how good it was because of who it was.
Those who saw the other step shows or watched the videos can see that the Delta and AKA shows were clearly better. The steps were more precise and more technical than those of ZTA. Some will say i’m hatin and some will agree but thats life. They were good but not 1st place good.

you have to give it to them they went into a competition where they were not welcome and danced there asses off, was it the cleanest…. no, did they make mistakes?…. yes, but so did all the other teams no one is perfect no team is perfect, but i tell you what they took the stage age owned it they had attitude and swagger they were confident that they can compete. Now i know all you black ladies are hating life right now saying they can never do what we do they can never be as good as me and as far as i am concerned that is reverse discrimination, white say that about us all the time and when they do we call the NAACP crying foul so lets not reverse the roles, I doubt they all woke up one morning and said to each other ” hey lets piss off black people by entering in the sprite step competition, hehe let call chris brown to be our dance teacher” get real, these ladies obviously these ladies had soul before they took the stage maybe they all have black boy friends i dont know. But I know this the minute we stop looking down at people who enjoy our culture and the beautiful things we do as black people the happier you will be because as far as i am concerned sharing and exercising other cultures is the only way hatred and bigotry will end, grow the f**k up!

THEY DID THE DAMN THING! BUT I DON’T REMEMBER SKITS LASTING ALMOST TEN MINUTES. (and I am not old for those ready to say something!)

but no I do not think it was a 1st place routine, they better get a lot stronger if they want to have a shot next year but congrats none the less

they were very HIGH ENERGY!! AND kept the routine going with hardly any pauses….the other performers, didnt keep my attention and were cut short but those white girls were the only routine I wanted to see, they kept my attention…. they commanded attention from beginning to end

Ok I watched their performance and all I can say is that did alright. 1st place? Heck no. Honrable mention sure. This was their first time competing? They clearly need more time and preparation. But like the young lady stated earlier this was judged by people who are not familiar with stepping or step competitions. So based on that I can see why they won. All I have to say if you are going to host a greek step show judge it accordingly and not give extra points just because it was an all white team stepping. When I was in college which was back in the mid 90s there was always one white person on at least one of the teams. It was different but they were all judged equally and fairly. This is just my opinion.

I took the time to watch all of the videos from the bottom up. Therefore, the last video I watched was the Zeta Tau Alpha group. Honestly, all I saw was a bunch of white girls doing what I see black queens doing all the time, stepping with high energy. It’s nothing new. As a matter of fact, it’s so unoriginal until it looks like the black sororities decided to “finesse” their performances, which is not that original in itself, but it is less unoriginal than the moving fast as hell and stomping hard as f*ck. Seriously, how many times have we seen that?

The only big deal about this was seeing white girls, who usually move with no rhythm, do something that the sistas are known for. And whoever the hel* said these white broads looked good must be used to lookin’ through the trailer park lol They didn’t win on looks, they won because the judges felt compelled to vote for them because you had a house full of n*guz actin’ a fool over their crack*r ass*s. Get it? House full of n*guz…house n*guz maybe? I’ll bet a lot of the same black folks cheering these crack*rs on are probably somewhere saying “damn, they won though?” Yeah they won dumbas*! I went to this step show and in my opinion they were not that spectacular. It is great that they embrace the African tradition of stepping but their moves were old and outdated. The only reason the crowd went crazy is because they were white. Had an African American sorority entered a historically white competition they would not have won on their first try, even if they were the best. They probably would have placed second or third. The AKA’s did a much better job than this sorority. Plus the judges that they had know nothing about real stepping. This was not a step competition in the realist sense, this was about entertainment.

That is the goal. And as a result of those choosing to forget who they are, black people are seeking a standard of living that is not of our own culturally (trying to live like white america), and in turn we begin to lose not only our identity and unification as a black community, we begin to turn against each other in forms of classism and individuality that breeds self-hatred. As a collective we are strong beyond measure. Individually divided and going for self, we are vulerable, so much so to the point where even white america will take from us and claim it as if it were their own (music,fashion, certain aspects of our culture). I am not surprised when I see young white kids rockin a fro or dreads, and most black women and men now shun these natural styles, rather insisting to straighten their hair to acheive a certain look and style that is not their own! So my brothers and sistahs, when you see white people doing s**t that niggas do, dont dare get upset wanting to speak against it. Because you’ve failed to look in the mirror and see not only what you yourself is trying to be, but you’ve also fail to realize what you’ve already allowed to be taken from us because of it. It is truly amazing to see all the negative comments about this post. For one, this is not news! Two, if they didn’t win or place then people would be screaming that it was unfair. They stepped, they competed, they won…end of story. Take your frustrations up with the judges if you feel that they didn’t deserve to win. I’m pretty sure they can tell you why the won, but to jump into conversations of race debates over a step competition is absurd!! Everyone pretty much knows that African Americans have come a long way and we still have a ways to go. It is not up to Obama to change the perspective of how we as black people view ourselves or the world, that is our own responsibility. We have been having this same convo for generations and will do so for many more to come because too many people are TALKING about the problem instead of working to fix it. Congrats to ZTA! Good on them. People from all cultures perform dances form various culture and other cultures do accept us. I had met some talented women who majored in dance in college and they studied multiple dances and had the opportunity to perform them on stage. I wouldn’t say they “stole” the dance from us. be proud that people take an interest in the things we bring to the table. Some black get upset and want diversity classes done when they feel they aren’t accepted but will hate on another race when they perform something that came from us.

The white girls were good, but I watched the show, and it was REAL misleading. On the show it looked like the winners were waaaaaaay better than everybody else. That “leg on the shoulder ” thing the AKAs did was tight. Im glad yall posted the other videos.

Being an old school greek it is pretty tough for me to watch any of these performances. NOTHING in any of these performances is original and I didn’t think the winning performance was original at all. It had elements of all of the signature routines of the original elite 8 black fraternities and sororities. And they even incorporated some of the moves from the Iotas. Anyone with a little age on them would easily be able to call them out…..

They won.. so what?.. I still dont think all the standing ovation was necessary.. One thing about our people.. we are quick to accept other races in what we do but they are NOT gonna accept us.. Next, stepping is not only about how your steps sound. It is about how intricate the steps, movements, and formations are. Those of you with stepping backgrounds know exactly what I mean as well as people who have backgrounds with marching bands. From the clips I have watched, the biggest things I have noticed is that there were not many people shuffling their feet to get into a spot to correctly align themselves for the next set of movements, and if they did it wasn’t much (except one person @ 3:35 lol). Everyone individual moved as a one total unit and not adding their own style (whether it was a shake of the head, flick of the wrist, or little extra thrust in the waist movement). Might not realize it, but those little things in dancing can throw that one person off in an entire group, making the entire group look bad.

Yes, they were definitely ON POINT! I got to see them perform when they won the semis in Houston, and they had everybody on their feet. I never knew white girls could get down like that, but they did their thing! All the other step teams will definitely have to step their game up for next year.

the platform step was tight. nothing else they did was original or outstanding. they just did a bunch of steps others did and have done.

the Deltas with the car alarm and the one step was so original they should have won from shown video.

ZTA did a really nice dance routine, but no a #1 step show–the AKAs did! So based on ZTA winning, we are going to go even further to the dance routines rather than real stepping. I think that is a shame. We are always so quick to go with the flow. Who cares what color anyone is; but we need to stop leaning towards the dancing. They can dance somewhere else. Step it up!!!
