Awwwww, how sweet. Of all the roles she could have played and won for, she had to win it for acting a fukkin fool…..YAYY!! Hollywood gave a black person an award for acting like they see us anyway…. Somebody break out the ‘Sham-Pain’…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chuckyluv/ chuckyluv

I guess since they have an “open marriage”, her husband can celebrate by banging somebody else tonight, while she’s home in her housecoat, eating a gallon of Rocky Road ice cream.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

you guys wannna know something so sad though…my sister in law is a TEACHER and her school is ‘high risk’ and in jeopardy and she’s on this other forum so excited about this crap of a movie and the fact that she won……but i’m not surprised she won…hell this movie will probably win for best picture…the more negative they can portray african-americans the more they (hollyweird) celebrate..it…what positive black picture or actor has ever won an oscar for something positive… *****crickets…crickets****** yeah i thought so…

@ chuckyluv and califemme LMAO!!!! that’s how they see us though!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/immealbymyself/ immealbymyself

wow really!?! u want to congratulate someone who pertrade black people again as ignorate and acting foolish. it was an interestin movie but i dont think she deserve and oscar for it .

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

yeah jacked up isn’t it? i just chalk it up as they have a ‘special’ take on it! LOL!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chuckyluv/ chuckyluv

@ immealbymyself and Gail_Brooks… You know that’s the formula to get a Black movie any kind of “critical acclaim”. You got the have the ignorant, down-trodden, “woe is me” Black person on drugs, orphaned or on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Enter the philanthropic White hero who “sees something in you worth saving”, and then dedicate their time and resources toward rehabilitating you and getting you on the road to social acceptance.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

@ chuckyluv…you are right…i just got off the phone with my mom about it…the difference in the roles…one was stereotypical and abusive woman and the other was the ‘save the black child’ strong woman role…that’s why i don’t watch it or feed into it…my thing is i just don’t support movies like that…really sad….and people don’t see it…they feed into the negativity….and i’m being so serious when i say this…all joking..and b.s. aside….now what someone should really encourage the actor that played ‘precious’ is to lose weight seriously….just for health reasons alone…diabetes and hypertension is havoc in our community…seriously!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Deletha_J/ Deletha_J

not surprised and best actress went to sandra bullock. an awful black mother and a heroic white woman that saved a black boy from the streez wins. i clearly see the message behind the oscars. stereotyping bastards.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

I’M HAPPY FOR HER AND YES SHE PLAYED A ROLE AS AN ABUSIVE MOTHER ON WELFARE IN THE MOVIE BUT SOME OF YOU ARE MISSING THE MESSAGE BEHIND THE MOVIE…STOP LOOKING AT THE MOVIE AS JUST A “BLACK THING” BECAUSE BAD PARENT’S WHO SEXUALLY, MENTALLY ABUSE THEIR CHILDREN, AND NEGLECT THEM COME FROM ALL DIFFERENT ETHNICITIES AND BACKGROUNDS AND THE SAME GOES FOR THE CHILDREN WHO FALLS VICTIM TO A PARENT’S NEGLECT. SOMETIMES I WONDER DO WE DO MORE HARM THEN GOOD WHEN LIKE WE ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO SHED SUCH A NEGATIVE LIGHT ON A SUBJECT THAT DOESN’T JUST AFFECTS US..IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING BLACK IT’S ABOUT TAKING SOMETHING BAD AND TURNING IT INTO SOMETHING GOOD. I PERSONALLY LIKE THE MOVIE…SHE DESERVES THAT AWARD…AND HOW COME NOBODY WASN’T TALKING CRAP ABOUT WHEN DENZEL WASHINGTON WON AN OSCAR FOR “TRAINING DAY” BECAUSE EVERYBODY WAS HAPPY HE WON THAT AWARD…THAT WAS A NEGATIVE PORTRAYAL BEING PLAYED BY A BLACK MAN. SMH!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

Deletha_J, *APPLAUSE*…I agree. And I also wonder would Mo’Nique have won if she had been in the ‘blind side’ and sandra bullock was in a ‘precious’ type of role….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

Oh and what does Gabourey weight and health problems has to do with the character Precious…am i missing something here…was the character plus size in the book or what?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

    @ tyelisha2

no i’m not missing the point…i tell you what though….if you can tell me what black film or actor has ever won an oscar that was positive and not stereotypical then i’ll say that hollyweird deosn’t hold a bias against african americans! name just one movie or actor that won an oscar that didn’t have a negative con nation to it?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

and i am aware there are millions of children that are poor, hungry, and abused…but all of us don’t live this way…which how the media and even the black media wants to portray…you never see the positivity in our communities….take for instance people overseas that know nothing of the african-american culture and movies like this are always portrayed…that’s why people outside the u.s. have such negative views of african-americans as well…so no i don’t think anyone is missing the point…’the message’ subliminal or otherwise is right in front of your face!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chuckyluv/ chuckyluv

@ CaliFemme23 and Deletha_J… They would never have greenlit the movie if ‘Blind Side’ was about a Black family adopting a boy and nurturing into his young manhood. So no, Mo’Nique or any other Black actress would have gotten an award for that.

@ Tyelisha2… I beg to differ with you. It IS a Black thing. You have to understand that there are certain images of White people that will NEVER be seen in a major movie, and if they are seen they certainly won’t be up for an award. Take Halle Berry in Monster’s Ball. She gets an award for her “performance” with Billy Bob Thornton. Do you think you would EVER see Sandra Bullock playing a role that calls for her to have her legs on Michael Clark Duncan’s shoulders or Terry Crew’s shoulders, or even Denzel’s shoulders, taking pipe for all the world to see. Can you see them playing that clip while she gives her acceptance speech???

White folks like to see themselves in the role of saviors or heros. That’s why plots like this are always applauded. And even though you do see them in roles the depict them as dysfunctional, they have diversity. Almost all of our roles are either tragic (Precious) or buffonish (take your pick of any Tyler Perry movie). It’s just a sad fact as of late.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

    @ califemme

No!!! Then they would have said that she is the ‘overbearing black woman’! LOL! but what they don’t get….is that role that sandra bullock played is what we do naturally… :)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

@Gail_brooks of course, i will and thanks for understanding where i’m coming from. There has been a long history of African-American men and women nominated. I’m going to go down the list from the very beginning.

In 1939–Hattie Mcdaniel won Best supporting role for ‘Gone with the win’

Ehtal Walters was Nominated for ‘Pinky’ in 1949

Juanita Moore for imitation of life

Dorothy Dandridge nominated for ‘carmen Jones’

Beah Richards nominated for ‘who’s coming to dinner’ which is the remake of Guess Who, i think..lol

Dianna Ross ‘lady sings the blues’

imma skip ahead because its a lot of names

I would mention halle berry but that had some negativity that was geared towards racism so i’m not going to go there.

Ok what about Jennifer Hudson in Dream Girls, she won and oscar, but damn in that movie she was on welfare…smh, so you said one actor right well what about…’Gone with the wind’ Hattie Mcdaniel. (fingers crossed)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

not nominated….but actually ‘won’ the oscar…i like dreamgirls though…she was cheated out of royalties…but again…she was welfare…(not being judgmental) because it’s millions of children and elderly that should be on it who slip through the cracks…all i’m saying is look at the difference in the roles that blacks win compared to the roles of whites who win…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

@Chucky Luv and @ Gail Brooks… Everybody likes to be portrayed a certain way and no one wants to be sterotype, but there is a looonnnng ass history of African-Americans being nominated for positve roles back then when racism was in its heyday so no matter how much of a positive role a black man or black woman played in a movie IT was over shadowed because they only viewed them as ‘N***ers’, but if you don’t do your research you wont know that because your simply basing your opinions on what is being projected in front of your eyes NOW TODAY…ain’t nothing subliminal if you know how to read between the lines. What about QUEEN LATIFAH IN THE MUSICAL ‘CHICAGO’, WHAT ABOUT TARIJI P. HENSON FOR ‘THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJIMAN BUTTON’, OR WHEN DIANA ROSS AND MICHEAL JACKSON REMADE THE WIZZARD OF OZ ‘THE WIZ’…EDDIE MURPHY WHEN HE DID IMAGINE THAT,’ MEET DAVE, THE HAUNTED MANSON AND SO FOURTH AND WHAT ABOUT MORGAN FREEMAN, SYDNEY POITIER, AND WHOOPI GOLDBERG WHO WON AN OSCAR FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN THE MOVIE ‘GHOST’…UGH..WE ARE GETTING BETTER WITH THE TIMES AND YES WE STILL BEING PORTRAYED IN NEGATIVE WAYS, BUT RACISM WON’T EVER STOP…WE NEED TO STOP FEEDING INTO IT. I MEAN DO YOUR RESEARCH AND YOU’LL SEE WE CAME A LOOONNNNNGGGG WAY…WE WILL GET THERE ONE DAY WHEN THERE IS THIS REALLY OUTGOING POSITIVE ROLE THAT’S BEING PLAYED BY A BLACK ACTOR THAT TAKES HOME THE BEST ACTOR NOD RAHTER THAN HALLE BERRY. AND OH THE REASON WHY MADEA IS SOO BIG IS THAT WE AS AFRICANS-AMERICAN FLOCK OUT TO SEE THAT MOVIE…IT’S LIKE WE ARE OUR OWN WORST ENEMY SOMETIMES AND STOP BLAMING WHITE PEOPLE FOR EVERYTHING AND START WORKING ON OURSELVES AS A WHOLE.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

@ Gail_Brooks, i know and i said Hattie Mcdaniel for ‘Gone in the wind’ and Whoopi Goldberg too for ‘Ghost.’

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

But all those ‘positive’ roles that you mentioned did not win and oscar or was never nominated for one…no…tyler perry DEFINITELY SHOULD win an oscar now all of his stories have a positive message….there’s always a character that is headed for ‘dooms day’ but there is always a positive message behind his movies…IN EVERY SINGLE ONE! and Madea is what is missing, especially in the youth of today…i did a paper on that in school ‘big mama is gone’…in every story there is a character that comes from the same type of background that precious came from…but there was always someone there that took charge in the character’s life…not every which way this girl or boy turned there was just another idiot standing there….because i have yet to figure out…how a social worker could leave her office from a case that ‘she can’t handle’ that was funny to me…because in reality…she would have gotten her license revoked…and not one teacher (with whatever lifestyle) stepped in after noticing precious was pregnant ‘twice’ without a boyfriend? so i think we can agree to disagree…because i believe what i believe….

ALOT OF PEOPLE IS TALKING ABOUT HOW MO’NIQUE WON AN OSCAR… THROUGH AN NEGATIVE ROLE… I SAY IF YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH IT… WHY HAVEN’T NO-ONE BLACK WITH MONEY… CREATED THEIR OWN AWARD SHOW??? SO THAT BLACKS CAN GET THEIR RIGHTFUL RECOGNITION… WHY DO YOU ALWAYS WAIT ON THE WHITE MAN TO DO THE RIGHT THING… DON’T YOU REALIZE NOW THAT THERE IS NO RIGHT IN THAT DEVIL SEED…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Black_Queen09/ Black_Queen09

Congratulations to Monique. It was good to see her play a serious role, instead of just low budget comedy movies.Maybe with the Oscar win she will have more opportunities to showcase her acting in dramatic roles. It seems that the Oscars are finally giving our African American actors, actresses some respect, because they didn’t seem all that black friendly to me in the past. They must have some new people on the Board of the Academy. We have so many wonderful & talented actresses (Cicely Tyson, Angela Basset, Queen Latifah among others who have yet to win the award, although they deserve it.) Hopefully things will continue to get better in Hollywood for black actresses.

YAY Congratulations 2 MONIQUE.!!!! …. And It Is True We Only Win Awards for Negative Roles LOL why should A An African American Have 2 create their own award show so we can win 4 Positive Roles???? That’s Makes No kind Of Since Specially Since We Dont Have As Many Films.

Yes! Yes! Yes! And I love how Mo started her speech….You have to seperate the politics from the performance. And her PERFORMANCE was deserving. Bottom line. This woman should not have been deprived of an award she deserved because people did not like the type of movie it was in or the type of role.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GORGEOUSLOVELY/ GORGEOUSLOVELY

It’s sad so many of u miss the point! It’s not about the movie it’s about her acting abilities. She played the part! Sqndra Bullock played the hell out her part also.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/voluptuos_beauty69/ voluptuos_beauty69

some of you people are so narrow minded and ignorant. she won because of her talent, because she switched her whole genre of acting and made us all cringe. we all felt the emotion in her performance, and that is why she won. im tired of people saying this movie is stereotypical when it is just talking about one family, not ALL families. abuse is prevalent in every race.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

@Black_queen09, you said it best, i am sick and tired of us black people pointing the finger when we are just as capable creating something just as big as the oscars. and as far as@Gail_brooks believe what you want to believe but Know one thing, sometimes we need to start supporting each other rather bringing someone down….NOBODY WASN’T TALKING S**T WHEN DENZEL WASHINGTON WON HIS OSCAR FOR ‘TRAINING DAY’ AND THAT WAS NEGATIVE PORTRAYAL PLAYED BY A BLACK MAN. AGAIN I KNOW I GAVE YOU THE RUNDOWN, BUT I GAVE TWO PEOPLE WHO DID WON OSCARS FOR TWO INSPIRATIONAL MOVIES…ONE Hattie Mcdaniel ‘Gone with win and Whoopi goldberg for ‘GHOST.’ AND YES TYLER PERRY HAVE NEGATIVE IMAGES IN HIS MOVIES…EITHER SOMEONE IS GETTING THEIR ASS WHOOP, ON CRACK, AND MADEAS CARRYING A GUN. THE REASON WHY I GAVE YOU ALL THOSE EXAMPLES BEFORE RATHER THAN GETTING TO STRAIGHT THE POINT IS YOU GOT TO LOOK AT OUR HISTORY AND YOU WILL SEE ‘THAT WE CAME ALONG WAY…WE HAVE TO GO OUT AND SUPPORT THOSE POSITIVE ROLES…BUT MOST OF OUR PEOPLE AND LETS BE HONEST RATHER GO OUT TO THE MOVIES AND SEE SOME IGNORANT S**T RATHER THAN GOING OUT AND CREATING BUZZ AROUND A POSITVE MOVIE. YESSSSSSS, MO’NIQUE’S CHARACTER IN PRECIOUS WAS NASTY, BUT SHE’S A HELL OF AN ARTIST…I JUST WISH WE STOP POINTING THE FINGER AT EVERYBODY AND GET UP AND DO SOMETHING. SHE’S AN HELL OF AN ACTRESS SHE DESERVES IT AND YES YOUR RIGHT WE DO GET PICK WHEN WE PLAYED NEGATIVE ROLES. BUT IF YOU KNOWS THAT’S TRUE THAN WHY EVERYTIME A MOVIE WITH BLACK PERSON PLAYING NEGATIVE ROLE COMES OUT, WE GO OUT AND SEE IT. LIKE I SAID SOMETIMES WE ARE OUR OWN WORST ENEMY. AND OH I LIKE TYLER PERRY AND HIS MOVIES TOO AND YES HE MOVIES HAVE A INSPIRATIONAL MESSGAE BUT THE SAMETHING GOES ‘PRECIOUS.’ TYLER PERRY MOVIES HAVE HARSH IMAGES TOO AND SO DID ‘PRECIOUS’ BUT BOTH OF THEM HAVE AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE AT THE END IT’S JUST THAT TYLER’S IS MUCH CLEARER, BUT IF YOU SAW ‘PRECIOUS’ SHE FINALLY BREAKES FREE…U HAVE TO SEE THE MOVIE.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

yes…we were talking about denzel’s role to!!! where were you? take him for instance all the roles that he has done…john q malcolm x, mo’ better blues…i mean the list goes on…but he wins an award for being a dirty cop turned drug dealer…another stereotypical role…no i’m not downing monique at all because she has done a lot of roles that she could have won…to each his/her own…you are right we should support each other…but know that every ‘black woman’ or ‘black person’ doesn’t live that way…tyler perry said it best after congratulating monique…’ i probably won’t be back to the oscars’… wink….and i don’t blame him!!! i mean i’ll say it again…first the media had a tendency to degrade black men…now they’re starting in on black women…he started a studio here in atlanta….maybe he’ll start an awards show here as well… oh yeah and i forgot about the actress that won an oscar back in day for the ‘gone with the wind’……………as the maid.

What some people don’t seem to realize is that award is NOT based on performance. It based on what make the old WHITE folks who make up the Academy feel good. For instance, you tell me what was more remarkable, Angela Bassett’s stunning portrayal of Tina Turner or Holly Hunter in ‘The Piano’??? I know some of you are saying “Holly Hunter? Isn’t she a porn actress?’ No, that’s Heather Hunter. Holly Hunter played in ‘The Piano’. (Nothing else of not, before that or since). She played a handicapped woman (another favorite of the Academy panel) in the New Zealand in the 1850′s, whose husband gave away her piano. Now, I didn’t see it, but you can’t possibly tell me that she was better than Angela Bassett, who a lot of people thought WAS Tina Turner for a while.

Anyone who has seen both movies, please compare Halle Berry’s role ‘Losing Isaiah’ versus her perfomance in ‘Monster’s Ball’. Tell me what on earth was remarkable about the character beside the fact that she got banged on screen by Billie Bob Thornton. I’m glad that Angela Bassett had the dignity and self-respect to turn that role down before it was offered to Halle.

We all think that ‘Training Day’ was entertaining, but does anyone seriously think that Denzel was better in that role than he was in Malcolm X???? But no matter how great the performance modern Hollywood couldn’t reward him for a role that had started to inspire young Black people to self-awareness. They had to squash that movement REAL QUICK. After all, if Black people were off trying to get educated and raise their consciousness, we would have lost a generation of gang-bangers, wannabe pimps, and booty-shakers.

So the Academy makes up with Denzel by rewarding him for his role as a psychotic, manipulative, evidence planting crooked Black cop, when everybody who knows the history of the LAPD knows that all the stuff Denzel’s character ‘Alonzo’ did in the movie, was done in REAL LIFE by White officers.

Like Denzel said in ‘Training Day’, “the s**t is chess, not checkers”. The Hollywood game is not nearly as simple “he/she was good, so we gave them an Oscar”. You have to dig deeper into the WHY certain movies are made, WHY certain movies are promoted, WHY certain movies and roles get rewarded. It’s far deeper than you might imagine.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

    @chuckyluv…

i co-sign that…that’s the only thing i was trying to say…and my thing is we wonder why other cultures and countries ( who know nothing about our culture) don’t respect us or think we aspire to or are drug dealers, dirty cops, hoes, crack-heads, thieves, welfare recipients, and even a new twist with the ‘educated thugs’ and ‘abusive welfare recipients now!!! I don’t think it should be celebrated at all….

    just my opinion!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chuckyluv/ chuckyluv

Not to belabor the point, but let me just give a few examples. Does anyone think that it was a mere coincidence that Hollywood had ‘Scarface’ ready to be released right at the start of the crack epidemic??? Does anyone think ‘Menace II Society’ and ‘Juice’ were released on the heels of ‘Malcolm X’, and suddenly Black kids went from wearing ‘X’ hats, to talking about ‘my hood this, and my hood that’, was not planned??? How people in NY in the early 1990′s, couldn’t wrap their mind around LA’s gang problem because so many were “Afro-Centric”, not a half-generation later, NY (and the whole East Coast for that matter) is flooded with fake Bloods, who quote lines from Menace II Society and Monster Kody’s book, like it’s Scripture??? And it’s not just movies. How did we go from Public Enemy political message to 2 Live Crew and NWA in the blink of an eye??? Because Black people were waking up, that’s why. Don’t be fooled people. The present state of Black people is far from accidental, and entertainment plays a major role in it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chuckyluv/ chuckyluv

@ Gail_Brooks… I hear you. And that’s why when people come from all over the world to the country that most of us were BORN IN, they treat us like we’re the immigrants. That’s why Asians can open up stores in Black areas and make it known that they don’t have to respect you. That’s why a Middle Eastern man at the local 7/11 has his gun READY when you walk into the store at 2am to get some ice cream. Or why they won’t bother to pick you up in a cab at any time of the day. It’s because of the images of Black people that have been exported through “entertainment” for years and years.

Please entertainment can only influence people who allow it to. Parents need to get back to monitoring what they allow their children to listen to, dance to, and entertain them. When you see grown azz folks laughing at toddlers doing adult dance moves that when it becomes a problem, when allow your children to view adult subject matter programs without viewing it with them that where the problem comes in. We as adults need to get back to being just that adults in charge and none of that best friend shat with the kids let them know whose the adult/boss.

As for foreigners some of us AA can’t even talk we have negative opinions of them as well and I seen it post many times over online and said offline we need to embrace our African, Carribean brothers and sister and come together or be left behind look around and see whose the new minority because its not us any more.

@ soveu34 I couldnt agree with you more about parenting and mentoring. My children are native american who know and practice their indian language and rituals. But so many times my son will come at me with…… ‘WE NEED TO TAKE OUR LAND BACK FROM WHITE PEOPLE’ and how this country is ‘INDIAN LAND’. I want him to be proud and educated about his heritage and culture and embrace it, but I want him to be realistic about the world he was born in and use the positive role models (no matter what race or color) he has in his life to gain self confidence as a MAN growing up in 2010 and beyond. I always tell him, ‘the world is his oyster’ not because he is INDIAN and deserves a pass because of history, but because he can do whatever he wants to do in this life.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chuckyluv/ chuckyluv

@ souveau34… I know what you mean, and I agree in theory. Unfortunately, many parents to seem to take on that responsibility. Personally, I with my sons would tell me that they looked up to some role model as their main influence, other than me. And I would imagine, based on your response, that you feel the same way. Sadly though, a lot of parents run from responsibilty at every turn and don’t care WHO influences their kids, in real life or on TV. Prior to moving to LA, I taught self-defense classes in Philly. The Saturday morning class was for underpriviledged kids. I couldn’t tell you how many parents just pulled up to the community center, let their kids out the car and rolled. They didn’t come in to make sure that myself or the other instructor was there. They didn’t offer to sit in on the class from time to time, to make sure they approved of what their children were learning. In many cases, we had to keep the kids 45 or 60 minutes after the class because parents didn’t come back on schedule. I find it hard to believe that parents, who showed a lack of concern in those circ**stances, would be vigilant about what their kids watched in the comfort of their own homes.

    I agree with chcukyluv.
I WOULD LIKE tosee Blackartress/actorswin awards for playing people in universal roles and not the sterotypical roles.

Precious-which I did not see, won’t see it,is a hard movie.Open your city newspaper and you will read that many White Americans are sexually abused,in poverty, downtrodden.

I am Black American but I cannot identify with Precious. I can indentify more with the White upperclass family in The Blind Side. I do not know of any family friends who are like Precious. Or any who are like the character Denzel won for Training Day. Or the character Halle won for in Monster’s Ball.

I can indentify with Denzel’s character from Phildelphia, which he should have won Best Supporting Actor for.

I want to see Black actors/actresses in movies like Ordianry People(D.Sutherland,Mary Tyler Moore,T.Hutton).

    IthinkMonique looked great.
I thought her speech was racist.
Everything in thew world is not about race.
Her performance was strong and a good one in Precious.
She won and Oscar, and though Ididnot agree with the movie, like thatkind ofmovie,Monque won for her performance. Iwish she was more gracious. Thankful. Bringing up Hattie McDaniel and other racist bs,come on.We can’t play the race card for anything, everything.

If interested in seeing a gracious, classy speech, check out HattieMcDaniel’s speech.

@Gail_Brooks….where was I…I was in school getting my education, that’s where i was at for your information and Yes Hattie Mcdaniel played a maid, but atleast she wasn’t some crack head or abusive ignorant black woman in a movie, AND SHE WAS ALL CLASS! @AztecGoddess, let them know girl!!!! YESSS, I’M GOING TO TALK ABOUT PERFORMANCE BECAUSE WITHOUT GREAT PERFORMANCES THERE WILL BE NO RECOGNITION AND WITHOUT NO RECOGNITION THERE WILL BE NO AWARDS (THERE ARE AWARDS GIVEN OUT BY BLACK PEOPLE TOO, NOT JUST BY WHITE PEOPLE). I’M NOT GOING TO GIVE A RUNDOWN OF IGNORANT ASS MOVIES THAT WE ALL KNOW WE FLOCK OUT TO THE MOVIES TO GO SEE. STOP BLAMING WHITE PEOPLE FOR EVERYTHING BECAUSE TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH IF EVERYBODY IS SO MAD WITH HOLLYWOOD COMING UP WITH THESE NEGATIVE ROLES THAT PORTRAY OUR COMMUNITY IN SUCH A NEGATIVE LIGHT THEN WHY ARE OUR BLACKS ACTORS AND ACTRESSES GOING OUT AND AUDITIONING FOR THOSE ROLES. HALLE BERRY, DENZEL, MO’NIQUE, ETC. ALL KNEW WHAT THOSE ROLES STAND FOR AND HOW THEY COULD AFFECT OUR COMMUNTIY, BUT THEY DIDN’T AND YES I FELT AS THOUGH MO’NIQUE SPEECH WAS A LITTLE RACIST TOO @BreBuffalo. THAT’S WHY I SAID SOMETIMES WE CAN BE OUR OWN WORST ENEMY. FURTHERMORE, WE ALL KNOW THE OSCARS IS A ORGANIZATION STARTED BY WHITE PEOPLE SO WHY SHOULD WE EVEN WASTE OUR BREATH ON THE OBVIOUS WHEN WE KNOW THERE’S ALWAYS GOING TO BE A BIAS AGAINST US BLACK PEOPLE. FOR EXAMPLE,WHEN MTV AND OTHER MUSIC STATIONS WASN’T RECOGNIZING ANY OF OUR MUSIC OR MUSIC VIDEOS BY AFRICAN-AMERICAN ARTISTS, ROBERT L. JOHNSON CREATED B.E.T (BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION), WHEN WE WASNT GETTING THE RECOGNITION WE DESERVE IN MAGAZINES, JOHN H. JOHNSON CREATED EBONY AND EBONY JET WAS THE SPIN OFF FOR BLACK WOMEN, SOUL TRAIN AND SOUL TRAIN AWARDS, NAACP AWARDS, NEWS ONE AND SO FOURTH…THOSE PEOPLE WERE ABOUT ACTION…THEY WASN’T GOING TO SIT AROUND AND JUST STATE THE OBVIOUS ABOUT WE WEREN’T BEING TREATING UNFAIRLY, THEY WENT OUT AND CREATED SOMETHING MUCH MORE ASTOUNDING! DAMN IF YOU DO AND DAMN IF YOU DON’T THAT ‘S WHY RACISM IS SUCH A HARD TOPIC AND I’M NOT EXPECTING PEOPLE TO AGREE WITH ME BUT IF THEY CAN CREATE THE OSCARS, WE CAN CREATE SOMETHING JUST AS IMPORTANT! SMH…BUT I STILL LIKE MO’NIQUE’S PERFORMANCE.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

    TYPO..I MEANT TO SAY FAIRLY

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

I’m not blaming white people for anything…i think black actors should be accountable for the roles they pick and what they say…because whether or not they want to believe it…they are role models…i have a problem with artists and actors white and black….especially black that exploit our race…and how she got up there and made a speech about ‘it’s not about politics’ was almost comical! That crap last night was nothing but politics…the ignorant abusive welfare recipient abusing and letting her child be abused…only to have the white woman come and save the day!!! thank god for actors such as angela bassett and jada pinkett smith and gabrielle union that have all turned down stereotypical roles…i don’t know what’s up with oprah either…every movie that she has financed there are always lesbian scenes, a child being molested or raped, a woman being battered, a slave picture where the women are beat or raped or both, and a negative depiction of the black man…i don’t look at her in the same way that i once did…and how can monique..in the age of hiv/aids .get on nation wide t.v. and say that she and her husband have an open marriage…young people preteens through 24 years of age…are the highest group that are being infected with hiv…many who look up to her… i mean people do what they want to do but i just feel like some things shouldn’t be said…especially if you are in the public eye…because i think she is just straight ignorant! So no…I’m not blaming white people…hell they don’t have to do anything to us anymore…because we are inflicting all the damage to ourselves…that movie was financed, produced, and directed by blacks..we’ve become so accustomed to the negative depictions..so much to the point that there are people that think this is all our race is all about…the drug dealer, drug addict, ho, slave, maid, welfare recipient, and a grossly obese teenager!

@AztecGoddess,you handle your son’s situation well, since he has you as a parent he’ll be very well rounded and continue to keep his eyes open to all the opportunities that he will face.

Unfortunately, @chuckyluv as you mentioned that is how some parents are getting down. Leaving their children to raise theirselves out in these dangerous streets and some of us already have our hands full with our own situations and we will not take on more than we can handle.

Some in our community risk their lives everyday to turn some of these wayward kids around but we will continue to see movies that despict AA/blacks as the ones needing encouragement to thrive and see them being lead by the only hope they have while alive the non black savior.

I know in our communities there are some who do help everyday and are not given the recognition they deserve. But, I will say for those who claims its not about race or it always has to be about race i’am apalled at the awards given to black actors/actresses when they play a negative character I noticed the only time when they will win an award.

Yes, these actors/actresses are very talented but when do they get to play the mother who open her heart and home to someone elses child, or the father who raised another mans trouble child and showed him/her what love really is like from a black persons point of view

I stop watching hollywood years ago because hollywood is fos and we as people of color should invest in our entertainment industry if we want to see more positive characters for those who want thier children to look up to someone show them the Garbage man who goes to work every day, the mail man who brings your mail, the libarain who checks in your books show them real everyday people like you and me that who they can look up to.

(sorry for any typo but I havent learned how to be perfect yet)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/soveu34/ soveu34

Thank god for me having my own mind because as an individual it is my responsibilty to think for myself and no one else. As for young teens being influenced by Monique and her talk of an open marriage where are these young teens parents when they are watching these adult subject matter.

Parents need to school their own children as its their responsibilty so nope I can not blame trashy hollywood because reality always wins over fantasy.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

@Gail_Brooks…i was talking in general because your not the only one that feels that way so i wasn’t singling you out and i totally agree with you 100 percent!!!!.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/brojayx3/ brojayx3

Tyelisha2…..baby girl your so ignorant to the bigger picture its sickening, and the sad thing is that you may be some ones mother which you will teach this ”trained” of thought to your child when will this cycle of ignorance break? lets look at this word ”performance” and it definition
    1. General: Accomplishment of a given task measured against preset standards of accuracy, completeness, cost, and speed.

    2. Contracts: Successful execution of a contract, or fulfillment of an obligation, in a manner that releases the performer from all liabilities under. question? so when we
accomplish a given task or successfully execute a contract, or fulfill an obligation of these negative roles that we preform as actors how does that help our image as people? are our obligations to uplift the images of our people or to accomplishment a task that is given to us by our open enemy? we have became like pigs,we are entertained with filth and we love it and support it and we wonder why we are not respected among the civilized people all over the earth.remember Satan is thee greatest performer of all time, would you be a fan of his performance after knowing his intentions? i know this will fall on deaf ears based on your post i have read,so i understand your mental position and others like you, cause you have a slave minded sickness that you need to come out of.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chuckyluv/ chuckyluv

So many of us have to get away from the accepted notion that things are exactly as they appear to be. Believe it or not, when you really study the Hollywood thing, the political thing, and so many other things that we see day to day, very little is in definitive Black and White. Sometimes left is actually right, and up is actually down. Entertainment is just one of the mediums used to deceive us. If you take any given idea and accept it as truth simply because “they said so on the news” or “I read it in the newspaper”, you are exactly the kind of ‘sheeple’ that the powers that be want you to be. If you’re unwilling to dig beneath the surface to make sure that what is presented is actually truth, then you’re doomed to be stuck in a rut of disillusionment. Truth be told, very little in Hollywood gets down without and underlying agenda. Even if it’s nothing overt, there are almost always subliminal messages. You have to understand the signs to see the messages, but they are there. I would suggest going to Youtube and looking up videos on the Great Deception that is the entertainment industry. Many of you would be shocked at things that you’ve watched and never recognized the underlying subliminals behind them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tyelisha2/ Tyelisha2

@Brojayx3 LMAO…FIRST OF ALL I DON’T HAVE ANY KIDS AND NEVER WILL I MISDIRECT THEM ON THEIR HERITAGE; THAT ‘S IF I HAD ANY, BUT I HAVE A BUNCH OF NEICES AND NEPHEWS WHO I ALWAYS SPEAK POSITIVE TO ALL THE TIME. I COME FROM TWO RESPECTABLE PARENTS WHO ALWAYS WORK HARD IN LIFE AND THEY TAUGHT ME AND MY BROTHERS TO BE INDEPENDENT AND STRAIGHT FORWARD. SECOND OF ALL YOU DON’T KNOW ME OR WHERE I COMING FROM SO I’M GOING TO BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU. SOMETIMES PEOPLE ARE TOO QUICK TO JUMP AT WHAT’S SO NEGATIVE ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON IN OUR COMMUNITY THAT THEY DON’T DO THEIR RESEARCH. YESSSSSSS!!! TIME AFTER TIME I’VE STATED BEFORE THAT I UNDERSTAND WHAT’S GOING ON IN HOLLYWOOD AND ITS BIAS AGAINST BLACK PEOPLE, BUT INSTEAD OF POINTING THE FINGER DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT; LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD AND DO SOMETHING UPSTANDING. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND YOU’LL SEE THAT THERE HAVE BEEN BLACK ACTORS AND ACTRESSES THAT WON AWARDS FOR POSITIVE MOVIE ROLES. I DON’T HAVE “A SLAVE MIND”…I’M WHAT YOU CALL AN EDUCATED YOUNG BLACK WOMAN WHO SEES BOTH SIDES OF EVERYBODIES OPINIONS. SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST TOO QUICK TO PULL SOMEBODY DOWN BY SAYING THE ONLY THING WE’RE GOOD AT IS GETTING OSCAR AWARDS FOR STEREOTYPICAL ROLES AND MAY THAT BE TRUE, BUT AT THE SAMETIME THERE HAVE BEEN LEGENDARY ACTORS AND ACTRESSES WHO WON AWARDS FOR POSITIVE ROLES; THAT’S THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO GET ACROSS ALL ALONG. I WILL NEVER BE TOO QUICK TO OPEN MY MOUTH AND SAY WE WAS AS BLACK PEOPLE DIDN’T GET THIS OR THAT BECAUSE OF A PARTICULAR SITUATION WHICH IN REALITY, IF YOU DIG DEEP ENOUGH YOU WILL FIND PEOPLE WHO ACCOMPLISHED THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU THOUGHT WAS NOT OBTAINABLE. HOW CRAZY IS THAT TO SAY I “HAVE A SLAVE MIND” BECAUSE I HAVE A DIFFERENCE OF AN OPINION IN WHICH I STATE THE OBVIOUS. I’M NOT GOING TO SAY WHAT’S ON MY MIND WITHOUT BACKING IT UP. ALL THESE YEARS THERE HAS BEEN POSITIVE MOVIE ROLES AFTER ANOTHER FOR BLACK PEOPLE THAT WE SHOULD OF SUPPORTED MORE THEN THE STEREOTYPICAL ROLES, BUT HONESTLY PEOPLE RATHER GO OUT AND SUPPORT ROLES THAT MAY NOT BE SO POSITIVE. WE GOT TO REALIZE THAT THERE’S ALWAYS GOING TO BE A BIAS AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH WE MAY POINT IT OUT, ITS GOING TO CONTINUE BECAUSE LIKE I SAID BEFORE. IF HOLLYWOOD IS SOOOO BAD THEN HOW COME OUR BLACK ACTORS AND ACTRESSES ARE GOING OUT AND AUDITIONING FOR ROLES THAT ARE STEREOTYPES IN WHICH SHEDS LIGHT ON OUR COMMUNITIES IN SUCH A NEGATIVE WAY. I’M DONE!!!!!! BECAUSE I FEEL AS THOUGH NOBODY KNOWS WHERE I COMING FROM AND AS FAR AS HAVING A SLAVE MIND…THAT”S B.S! NEVER WILL I GO DOWN THAT PATH!

If people wanted more positive roles for black actors to come out than the negative roles we see constantly than they have to remember this…..Action speak louder than words. Knowledge is power so is OUR money! Support new black directors trying to get more exposures with positive roles that show another side to the black communities and we may just see a change in the near future. Making a movie cost money but can be done on a small budget (it have happened many times). Who knows maybe someone would get an independent movie made with positive black role models that may just make it in the top 5 slot and Hollywood would take notices! Money talks in Hollywood.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/affropuffs/ affropuffs

Just realized that the past few blacks that got oscars were all playing negative roles. Halle Berry in Monsters Ball, Denzel Washington in Training Day and now Mo’nique in Precious. Can’t black people get commended for postive roles too? Not raining on their parade. They are all great actors that deserved an award long ago… but still…
