Dreamkeeper…you may have a point there…definately something to think about cause I sure as heck dont understand why black women only get nominated or given an oscar when we are depicting negative. I find it isulting.

Although I hated the movie Precious, mainly because I think it embodied every stereotype black women have had to endure for the last sixty years, and even threw in a new one, pedophelia. We’ve been accused of being lazy, uneducated, unambitious, dirty, etc. But child molestation was a new one for me. I didn’t think that added anything to an already depressing movie and would not have been missed if omitted.

However, I do like Gaboray Sidobe, we forget that she is not Precious, that’s just a role she played and played very well. It was a stunning performance for a first timer. I think she’s cute and kind of whimsical. Why does size have to play a part in a person’s value like all skinny people are trustworthy and upfront. I hope she continues to get parts because she definately showed us that she can act, but I hope based on her complexion and size, they won’t always be negative roles.

Oprah chooses to play Aunt Jemima in everything she does which infuriates me. She is possibly the most accomplished black woman in America but never chooses to play roles that exemplify her success. It was one thing when we had to play maids and mammys, Oprah has a choice and still prefers to always play the downtrodden black woman. I haven’t liked her in anything since Brewster Place and she was a mammy in that too. Just like The Color Purple and Beloved.

Try portraying the successful black woman you are Oprah. Give young black women something to aspire to other than mistreatment and mammydome. Show them that they too can rise up from unfortunate backgrounds and realize their dreams and successfully accomplish their goals.
