Did she not think that there was at least the possibility of indoctrination, if not abuse??? It’s just common sense. I could get into a deeper discussion as to why she promotes that agenda, but it’s not necessary. The fact is, she does, and now that there’s a criminal aspect to it, she’s trying to distance herself.

@chuckyluv… i remember the comments/complaints years ago before the school was opened. and the same subject was mentioned that a man and women should have been housed with them. Not saying that THIS incendent wouldnt/couldnt have happen either way but from their argument is one guardian would have been more obligated to watch the other and so forth.

I had a problem with this ‘school’ from the beginning…
problem 1: A publicity stunt set up for failure because due to regulations and credibility or the lack there of with FOREIGN relationships (Africa’s laws has nothing to do with US school/student regulations) there rights have nothing to do with the US constitutional rights. (you hear about on going stories about molestation/rape/abuse all the time and nothing barely gets done, its only because OPRAHs name is on the agenda that authorities took better interest to it)

problem 2: Why would you not TEST your theory/market locally first? Go and spend time thats worth millions of dollars in a foreign land and not first attempt your theory on the millions of little black girls that could have used a good role model here in the US.

problem 3: …this site has nothing to do with direct dating information, so why does ‘sexyloversg’ feel the need to run meta/tag scripts on every BP page? …i dont know about you but im starting to grow tired of the ad bites.

Your point #2 was my same thought exactly when I first heard of this ‘project’. I was equally appauled when I did a little digging on it and found this…When Oprah did a survey/study asking thousands of american kids between the junior high and high school age what they MOST wanted, they responded with..”We like iPods, Jordan’s, iPhones, The new D&G purse…” and so on…When she asked the same amount of kids in Africa what they most wanted, she PHRASED THE QUESTION A BIT DIFFERENT…It went from What do you most want…to “What kind of school’s and better living would you most like to have”? Do you see my point brotha?
Now I really don’t fully know what her reasoning was for NOT asking the american kids the same EXACT question…I think anyone would have expected our kids here to have answered the question different had it been posed in a more specific way. Sure if you ask a child what they WANT generally, they would pick the superficial…I mean if I ask my 12 yr. old daughter what she wants..she would probably say the new so and so shoe or the new such and such CD…But when I ask her what she needs particularly for school she has a different response. Bottomline, Oprah’s ‘black people’ track record is shody at BEST….
And yes I know i’ll hear something crazed form someone on this site, but folks need to wake up to Ms. Winfrey the HN (house negro)

chuckyluv, Hmmm, ok you’re making me think a lil bit here…(Yeah crazy I know rite, ME thinking!). So if a lesbian woman isnt the ‘right’ choice for an all girls school, you say that a man cant be all that trusted either…So WHO is trustworthy? There are TOO MANY hetero white women accused, arrested and convicted of child molestation all up and through the schools, male principals, gym teachers and the list goes on and on…. I mean everything is a risk for the most part. Because the lady is allegedly ,(im not versed of the entire story so I say allegedly), a lesbian does that automatically mean that she is prone to molesting children? Is it also safe to say that a grown man is prone to it as well? Isn’t that a bit unfair to people in general? If parents/society suspected everyone due to those factors then damn, who would teach children in school then?

@ CaliFemme… I’m not saying that lesbians are more likely to be a danger than a straight man in that situation. I think either could be subject to temptation, especially with kids that are vulnerable and impressionable. I think that when it comes to all-male or all-female schools, a rigorous screening should be necessary. Look at what happens in Catholic schools. I actually think they’ve barely uncovered the tip of the iceberg there. There has to be more checks and balances in place to insure that there are no trangressions. You know, “Sure So and So is in charge, but there’s someone else keeping an eye on her”. Knowing that you are not the be all end all, and that you will be accountable for ANY and ALL actions, is usually enough to keep a person in line. And no school is the place to try to push a sexual agenda. As I stated in another thread, what happen to parents being the ones to educate their children in the way that they see fit, just as they do in religious matters.

I detect some resentment on here at the fact that Oprah built a school for girls in South Africa. As a first generation American whose parents are from Africa, I know all about one not getting access to basic or even quality education in that part of the world. I have been there several times and in that part of the world education is a privilege and not a right. If you don’t have money, you are probably doomed to a life of poverty because we all know how Education can lift one out of poverty. In the United States, you are basically guaranteed a free education from elementary through high school, with the possibility of not even getting grants or loans to attend college. I have no qualms at all with her helping out some of the less unfortunate in the world.

chuckyluv, I ‘hear’ what you sayin…but again, there is no sure, absolute concrete way to be certain about any adult left in charge of children. I don’t think the woman being a lesbian has anything to do with it at all…As I stated before, there are plenty of heterosexual people in the schools having sex with the children left and right. It is always going to be an easy although disgusting act to commit because schools, church, catholic schools, private schools etc are the places that parents send their children with the utmost trust and promise of safety. But you make a great point though…What should stop a parent from providing their child the education they need if at all possible…

FodayB, I know you’re quite biased about this subject from the start but no one resents Oprah for building a learning institution for those who need it. We never once said she was wrong for doing that. She just went about it the wrong way…But you know what some folks say about the road to hell…It’s always paved with…..

It’s ok to disagree with me Califemme, although I am really looking at this issue from an objective point of view. One has to really travel to some of these countries and see some of the slums and conditions these people are living in. It makes the Ghettos in the United States look like mansions.

About time Saint Oprah have to face going to court for charge of defamation. It may just be the thing to make her wake up and smell the coffee. I hated how she did not started a school here first because regardless of what anybody said, the law of the universe would not have agree with that. Charity start at home first and if she had open a school here first she would not have been in court right now on some charge of defamation. She made her money here first in the USA so why should she not start a school here?

FodayB, I agree with you. I have been to other countries (Not Africa though I must admit). And yes the things we complain about cant even compare to the issues/’living’ conditions they endure. I just think Oprah could have gone about her quest in a different way…And a question to you personally…If there was someone in Africa that damn near the entire country admired and was a very powerful person…Wouldnt you as an african man want to see that person living and being from Africa build schools and help those that are right there with that person as opposed to flying all the way to another country to do so??? There are MANY, TOO MANY students right here in the USA that need something as profound as new books, decent chairs and desks, as well as enough room in a class to fit 35-50 students at a time…

my thing is…why not develop a school for both African boys and girls?…that’s what i didn’t understand…if she really just wanted to open up a school in Africa…isn’t that a form of discrimination? I mean if she’s trying to ‘open the doors’ for the less fortunate wouldn’t a school ‘for all’ be the right way to do it? these comments are interesting…but she should have opened up schools here in the U.S.
