It’s long been a myth that African-Americans can soak up all the sun they want and not have to worry about skin cancer. The truth is that people with darker complexions need to protect themselves from those UV rays just as much as people with lighter skin.

Here’s some info on skin cancer in African-Americans from SkinCancerInfoOnline.com:

Although the rates of occurrence of various types of skin cancer are lower in African Americans, they are not zero. African-Americans can develop skin cancer, and when they do, the outcome is often more serious than it is for other Americans.

One reason why the outcome of skin cancer is often poorer in African-Americans is that the disease is often diagnosed at a more advanced stage, when treatment is more difficult. Also, the type of melanoma most frequently found in African Americans is acral lentiginous melanoma, which is more dangerous than the types of melanoma that predominate in white Americans.

Shocking isn’t it? Here’s some tips on how to spot skin cancer:

Among African Americans, melanomas occur mainly on body sites that are not pigmented, such as the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, and the skin beneath the nails. Other sites at which melanomas occur relatively often in African Americans are the mucous membranes of the mouth, nasal passages, and genitals.

Like people of other heritages, African Americans should develop an awareness of the moles on their bodies and be alert for new or changing moles. In addition, African Americans should examine their fingernails and toenails for suspicious changes, which may include brown or black colored stripes under the nail or a spot that extends beyond the edge of the nail. Anyone who notices such changes should see a doctor promptly because they may be signs of melanoma. Melanoma that is detected and treated early can usually be cured.

Go get that sunblock and a stylish hat and protect yourself this summer! For more info on skin cancer among African-Americans click here.

Thank you for this article. This subject has been touched on but not detailed.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/solsa_7/ solsa_7

This article is a MYTH and MISINFORMATION. Where is your worldwide medical and scientific Proof findings on this subject??? People of color even in the hottest regions around the world don’t suffer from melanoma LOL. That is what the melanin in their skin is for! Its all over the body from head to toe even in their eyes melanin is found. The real danger is in the use of that unnatural SUNBLOCK..it is one of the reason some people of color get skin cancer.. some sunblocks are filled with harmful chemicals that weakens or even destroy the amount of melanin they have in their skin. Instead of attacking the Most High’s gift of melanin to his children with this BS article, you should be educating yourself and the people about this precious GIFT called Melanin!

DEAD on SOLSA_7…down here in the Bahamas, guess how much sun block we use??? I have NEVER heard of anyone getting skin cancer….ridiculous article..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Deekang3/ Deekang3

Had no clue article on skin cancer could bring out ignorance. It’s not about deny a gift of melanin, it’s about protecting yourself. No one said skin cancer is rampant in places like Bahamas but try talking to some of the black dermatologist if you want proof. Just because you don’t know someone personally doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Our skin has been mixed w/other cultures, especially in the US, and that makes us more susceptible skin cancer. Don’t put others lives at risk to push some radical extremist point.

Melanin is a beautiful thing, but Black people can get skin cancer. I hope people go and get the proper information and don’t let ignorance get the better of them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/supamanluva4eva/ supamanluva4eva

SKin cancer comes from lack of melanin and toxins in the body cooking in the sun through the skin. More adverse affect on people who lack melanin than those who have a more abundant supply.

LMAO ” REAL ” BLACK SKIN CANNOT GET SKIN CANCER LMAO!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Pirate-X/ Pirate-X

Please family, understand it CAN happen but doesn’t happen OFTEN. Don’t be ignorant and think you sit in the sun everywhere, that’s stupid.

As a PROUDLY DARK-SKINNED Black man born in raised in America, I believed I never could be effected by the sun. And my family is from the Caribbean/south America, so you couldn’t tell me jack.

But when I visited the Dominican Republic and Brazil, my strong powerful dark skin started peeling. Not this isn’t cancer but it is a warning about the the sun’s effects. And I was recommended low grade sunblock which worked and protected my skin.

Family (especially from the US), don’t believe that your darker skin or ethnic background will protect you everywhere. Know that if you are not accustomed to the sun certain areas, you will be effected. Whites and paler people born in tropical areas grow more used to that sunny environment that a dark-skinned person raised in the US (Philly for me). Do the knowledge and observe you surroundings. This ain’t theory, it’s my first hand experience. Don’t get burned by ignorance. Peace!

its actually true, black ppl can get skin cancer and a lot die every year from it. it just doesnt get as much pub as white ppl do. the article is actually 100% true. for everyone who doesnt think so, look up what happened to Bob Marley, he died from a lesion that started under his toenail. He died because of his belief that he shouldnt have his toe amputated to help save his life. he had acral lentiginous melanoma. learn the ABCDE’s of melanoma ppl and dont believe the hype that cuz ur black, u CANT get skin cancer. if u have skin, you CAN have a rapid uncontrolled growth of skins cells, which is all cancer really is… geez…

bob marley was mixed….his father was european….he didnt get the cancer from standing in the sun….he got it because he had an infectious toe from playing soccer that he didnt wanna get checked out by da doctor….it spread….and killed him….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/kaikai7/ kaikai7

Anyone can get skin cancer, although it occurs more in people of European ancestry aka white folks. People with little to no pigmentation are also at an increased risk. Sunblock and avoiding long periods in direct sun can decrease the risk.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jahsyn/ jahsyn

he may have been mixed but ive never seen an infection turn into melanoma lol.. cancer can do a lot of things but it doesnt transform like that lol…. cancers mimic infection. problem in the pathways that mimic the inflammation process never turn off, hence the rapid expansion of metastatic cells throughout the body. He died of melanoma, maybe that made him more susceptible to other opportunistic infections but the underlying cause was melanoma. Black people, dont think you cant get skin cancer, is it lower than our fairer skinned cohorts, yes… do we get it, yes! if u have skin, you can get skin cancer…. no one said it was ALL environmental, your genetics can also make u more prone to melanoma. you might just be genetically predisposed to getting melanoma. ive seen patients at the hospital i work with that have stage 4 metastatic melanoma, black, white , hispanic and asian that are all under 18, no one has had enough exposure to sun for it to be environmental at that age from normal exposure so uhm, ya, you CAN get it. is it likely, no… possible, yes….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/digg_it_up/ digg_it_up

bob marley died of a cancerous brain tumor….not melonoma….no where in my statement did i say melonoma spread from his toe to his brain…..follow the link below

You live their life, you value their values, you do what they do, you get what they get. Do you think the browned skins of people in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Sierra Leone or any place the sun shines 300 days of the year (which by the way are BILLIONS of people) spend the crap time slathering themselves with SUN BLOCK to protect them from the sun? They wear clothes and handle their lives. Only the pink ones and the brown ones that think they are pink (SMDH) do that crazy ish. Get a passport and go someplace that does not have a 5 star hotel. The poisons in sun block probably cause alot more damage than the sun does. Stop being naked in the direct sun and your behind wont have any thing to worry about.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/duncan69/ duncan69

the african and arab gets dressed when the sun/son comes out but the pale man takes his/her clothes off and dies because of it.keep in mind the son/sun gave life and it can also take it away because its not hateful but it wont be disrespected the way th pale man likes to treat things it comes across.

    ABSOLUTELY! Great post!

Duh. No matter how dark you are, you can STILL get sun damage. I knew this already. It’s a myth when people say they are dark so they cannot get sun damage. They may not BURN as easily, but the damage is there.
