The problem with statistics…and the misinterpretation of them… this is a selected test group. I cannot begin to go into how alarmist and inflated this one is. I do not detract from the overall point of staying safe, and tested, but the blatantly erroneous pseudo-stats are starting to raise my ire.

I work in a hospital and no, these numbers are so not true. We get the same exact study read outs for the entire country once a year and these numbers are FAR off from the truth. Now what I do wonder is does HB/NewsOne take the time out to actually check to see if these things are true or not before they take so much pride and joy in slamming black people…It is AMAZING how these news sites put so much energy into promoting interracial relationships and what we can learn from kardashians and gay males about ourselves BUT they REFUSE to display ANYTHING positive in the name of black people alone. doing_me74, Actually, no one ‘runs’ to get tested all the time…Hence the reason why people shouldnt be so quick to sleep with any and everybody. If you have one great person to deal with, then you should stick with that. The two of you get tested that ONE time and you’re good if both of you believe in not bangin multiple people. Its only a hastle to be tested when youre switching people every other day/week/month.

While I think the title is too much, the numbers of stds among the black demographic is “high.” The “Wrap It Up” campaign is a farce. Like others have stated, condoms are ineffective with protecting against many stds. As herpes and HPV are transmitted by skin to skin contact, which means the area that the condom covers isn’t the only area where these viruses are on the genitals.

Not to mention oral sex…people get so “excited” about oral sex that many ADULTS disregard protection. There is NO such thing as SAFE SEX..point blank. If you do a search on condoms sales over the last 10-20 years, you will that just as they have gone up so has the numbers of STDs/STIs.

Again this title is misleading but there are too many things that we just don’t want to face, discuss or own up to among us and this is why when America has a cold the Black community has pneumonia. Too many of us do not have the right conversations with our “partners” and too many are too lonely to bring up the real stuff like stds and getting tested. To tell the honest truth, Emily… I personally would never be with a Jamaican man…. Most of them who come here from Jamaica are looking for someone to use and take advantage if not infect them with HIV/AIDS. My girlfriend was with someone who is Jamaican, and he messed her over BAD. He messed up her credit by getting her involved in a scam (She didn’t know it was a scam til it was too late). He always acted like he was mad at the world. I REPEAT, I am not saying ALL Jamaican men are like this, but A LOT of them are.

I am not even going to lie—I won’t mess with a west indian man to save my life and I am west indian! I have had to deal with (on top of everyday relationship problems) being drug in the middle of scams and also physical abuse. The last straw was when my last boyfriend was behind my back getting stolen items sent to my house. The police came to my door and he was sitting right on the couch and denied everything even though they said they would put ME in jail!

I also think I had one boyfriend who tried to use witchcraft on me because of some strange stuff I found out about.

I cant see how its possible that half of all black women have genital herpes…unless they are getting these statistics from a national Medical database???? I know the last time i heard the statistics for herpes was that it affected some 60-70 million Americans. The bad thing is their are no ways to really test for Herpes and some other STD’s. And many people are carriers (meaning they pass it along their whole life without ever knowing they even have it).

I guess they couldn’t get all the people they wanted with the fake Swine Flu story. People should be really aware of these studies/polls that reveal skewed results. They are so easy to rig. Hell, if a specific group put a questionnaire in the office of a doc who specialized treating STDs, and had the doc have his patients fill it out anonymously, but truthfully. Guess what, I could then turn around and say “A ‘study’ shows that 75% of African American women have an STD”. I don’t have to say that I did the study in the damn clinic. People will get all freaked out and the distrust, skepticism and stereotyping is reinforced.

These statistics are skewed because who exactly do they have data on? People who have been tested for it. Who gets tested for it? Generally people who have shown symptoms or who believe they are at risk. They of course, have not tested the entire population. It is just bad research to draw such a broad conclusion from such a small sample group.

There is a blood test for Herpes, one can know if they have HSV-1 or HSV-2. The problem is that need to be sure to ask what they are being tested for. I have heard people say stuff like “I got tested for everything” but they can’t verify or say what exactly they were tested for.

Most clinics test for HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia (Claps), Gonorrhea and Hep C. However, many only test for 3. As for HPV, Human Papilloma Virus, women cells are tested when they get the pap. Now what I don’t like with this HPV vaccination and the advertisement for its vaccine which is only quadrivalent (treats the four common strains found in patients with cervical cancer)… on the surface this looks like a WOMAN’s issue but HPV (high risk-cancer causing) can cause Penile, anal, vulvar, cervical, now found to also cause mouth and throat which makes sense. This STD is not just a “woman’s” issue, though cervical cancer is more common than penile cancer.

If people get the right information, STOP acting like condoms somehow makes SUPER P Enis, many people not all will make some better decisions. Now I know people are headhunters but no head is worth getting mouth or throat cancer.

Bottom the article is too much but it doesn’t hurt to be proactive and just ask for the HSV test when one goes in to get tested. It is hard to say for certain, “I don’t have anything” when you haven’t been test for everything. Most STDs are asymptomatic when is also a problem.

Lord, help us…we have gone too far to the left and but if we really love ourselves, then we have to be proactive and ensure that we are in good health.

If a random study was done on this site alone and the results showed 48% of men on here can’t compose complete and comprehensible sentences, I’m sure the same “brothers” saying they won’t be dating Black women anymore will be the first to try and defend their literacy skills.

If you, as a man, will down an entire group of women because of a biased study, then you’re probably doing us a great favor by removing yourself from our options.

I don’t believe the study. It implies that Black women are irresponsible compared to white women…
I don’t believe the sexual behaviors in Black women are that much different compared to White women in America.

Also, for this number to be true, one can make a reasonable assumption that a large percentage of Black men are infected with Herpes as compared to there male counterparts, and I don’t believe that either.

I’ve read, at least, 3 newly released study results in the last week pertaining to the grim health state of Black/African-Americans. The institutions, individuals conducting these studies and releasing these results need to be heavily prodded.

I think that we’re all smart enough to know propaganda when we see it. But we have to realize that very websites that some of read or utilize (i.e. BlackPlanet, Mediatakeout,.. etc) are the very ones who are promoting the bullshyt. And when somebody snaps photos of her, guess which these websites will have plastered up the next day, as if that represents all of us. And believe me, we as Blacks are NOT the only one visiting these sites on a regular basis. And ignorance like this is how much of the rest of the world draws its conclusions about Black people. And all people need is a few pics to point to in order to justify their biases. That’s why we have to pretty much take pride in how we present ourselves at all times. I worked in the investment industry for a number of years and saw countless white girls come out of college and get into the workplace for the first time acting like complete hoes. But after a few years of partying, the settle down, get engaged, married and people treat them like they was Princess Di. I’m thinking, “You the same bytch that was swinging upside down from the pole in the club, sucking three guys dicks, now you acting like a suburban soccer mom”. Black women don’t have that luxury. Once society labels you, it’s hard to shake it. 95% of those white girls acting a fool in the ‘Girls Gone Wild’ videos, can turn around, get married and never look back. Regardless of race…and those are only reported cases. So the stats reported here for black women don’t really surprise me, although I doubt it’s actually that high (it only depends on reported cases). However, 1 in 4 is still pretty high. I think the mature approach is to remove the taboo and stigma fro this disease. This way, people will be more open about sharing their status and have safer sex.

I’ll try to shed a little ligh on this topic if I can. I’m a public health major, I have worked in clincal research for 10 years. The thing you must realize about statistics, is its just that statistics. No, not every single black woman in America was tested in this study but, there is something to learn from this. Because poverty follows health disparities, many African Americans as well as all minorites don’t get the proper healthcare they need or ability to get the proper semi-annual and annual screenings. With Herpes, as many of you know, is not even checked for in some check-ups with physicians. Combine that with the fact that in women, herpes can lay dormant for several years without any outbreaks.

Yes, these statistics are high. Rather than blame society and the media for things that go on in our culture. We need to do a better job of education. Which doesn’t start by teaching kids about sex. It starts by policing ourselves. How many of us go on blackplanet, myspace, facebook, and other websites and meet people? How many of us have had sex with people we met at a club? If you think of all the scenarios in our lives where we have had sex and not even known the sexual history of the person we slept with prior to doing it, you may be surprised at how u look at statistics.

The general rule is if you don’t like a statistic, don’t become one. The reason why they didn’t come out with a survey on black men is because to do a study you have to have a certain # of participants. Black men have a history of not going to the doctor, case in point why prostate cancer is so deadly in black men cuz its detected too late. So, I will guarantee that if a study was done in African American men…it’d be twice as high of herpes ratio than African American women.

I am one of those people in the med field that have these same exact case studies in my mailbox at work…And I also ‘cry foul’ on the numbers because they dont show the ENTIRE race of black women…How do I prove it? People can skew numbers anyway they want. Anyone who has taken statistics or a quantative analysis course knows this. Just like the misconception that more Black people are on Welfare assistance. If we look at the frequencies instead of the percentages the truth comes out that the numbers given are not accurate reflections. Even if you look at the percentages, everytime a woman goes to her GYN they don’t report information unless it is something alarming so what about all of the women who go their GYN and do not get counted because of their lack of a disease? Selection bias.

If your an educated writer you would know that these numbers come from medical facilities that are required to report whats going on in their clinics. Which clinics are those???? Private clinics arent forced to reveal this type of info and so you will never know what is going on in the upper class, as far as medical info goes! This is bulls**t. Lol. I’m currently in med school at UAB and I participate in studies at least once every 2 months. These percentile rates that they throw out at you are a FAR cry from the actual truth. They pick there study participants according to health, age and race. They really narrow down how many ppl can be in a study because there are usually 3 phases in studies and that costs money for them. So, don’t take this 2 heart. If half of all black women in the world had herpes, then most of the world would have it as well! Come on now, look at the math.

Ok now, study’s are showing that 50% of black women have “Herpes”? So that’s pretty much 1 out of every 2 “black women” have herpes, right? Ok now, that being said. Are all these “herpes cases” coming from black women having black male counter partners? So if this is the case, where are the stats for non black women ,that contract this disease? Where are the study’s for them since they also have sex with “black men”. So are you telling black women that only the “std “carrying men only date us? And the healthy black men only date non black women? Why do these incompetent scientist’s come up with these non realistic theories instead of actually facts! In order to obtain factual information on this study they would have to test every single “black woman”. I wonder is it just that the media is unhappy with how more “black women” are striving to reach to the top in this error? Is this just their way to make “black women” fall back and look down upon by the world and their own race of men? The thing we have to realize is that some of these forums are DESIGNED to get us bickering with each other. If they post a topic that says, “Study shows that light-skinned sistas are more likely to have a college degree” all the sudden we have a light vs dark debate. If they say “New York rappers say they are determined to take back rap music”, they can divide us into a North vs South debate. They could post that “85 percent of NBA players date non-Black women”, all the sudden it’s Black men vs Black women. If we fall for the okey doke, we’re could be agreeing with somebody on one forum and insulting them in the next. Truth is, most of us have more in common than things in which we differ. I knew this would be a topic that united most of the sistas because the claim is so stupid that it would really bring into question the credibility of the editor that allowed it to be posted. But as we’re starting to see, BP isn’t concerned with accurate reports, they are on their divide and conquer s**t… We just have to be able to see through it.

Who does this damn test? How can you even determine this du mbas ses, first off, Not everybody gets tested to be sure of this, IT’S NOT LIKE THE CENSUS. I know I don’t have it or people in my circle. I recently underwent a full battery of std testing as I was getting married… before I went through with this process I studied up on it and I found that in most cases they do not give you the test for herpes…and most health care facilities are unable to test for herpes unless you are showing signs(i.e. have an outbreak).
So to me that suggest that the people who were tested were showing symptoms of herpes and therefore tested for what they already knew to be true.As far at the 48% ratio…I submit this… I grew up in South Carolina,and a city that was like a suburb of the city I grew up in was Timmonsville SC. There was a headline in the local newspaper that read “80% of people tested for hiv in Timmonsville have it”… Now based on that headline and my youth and ignorance at the time…I automatcily assumed that 8 of 10 people I met from Tville had Hiv…but the truth to the story is there was an outbreak and it was localized between a small group of people who were sleeping together and they all got tested and most had it…those 14 people didn’t represent the other 8000 people in that area. This headline is much of the same…shame on “Hello Beautiful”

According to statistics, sixty percent of black women have HIV or Aids. Now forty percent of black women have Herpes? We have to remember that these are white statistics, done by white scientists and white doctors. To let them tell it, white women are disease free which is absolute rediculous. The only thing they seem to get is Breast Cancer. And although our statistics in Breast Cancer are high too, where are the funds to educate us about breast exams? The difference is that they have enough respect for white women to keep their stats confidential. They’re probably way higher than ours for sexually transmitted diseases.

White women have always been more promiscuous than us just based on the fact that they consider themselves superior and desirable to everyone. When the average young boy sees his first Playboy, Penthouse or Hustler Magazine, it is not one of us spread eagle. They always downplay their own weaknesses and inflate ours. Black women get a bad rap no matter what. The average white woman would do sexually perverse things that most of us would never consider, yet we still have all the diseases. Supposedly we catch HIV from men who are on the downlow. Is that to say that men who have downlow lifestyles don’t sleep with white women? Because they seem to lay claim to our men like we shouldn’t be expected to have a black man of our own.

Could it be that only black women were tested and forty percent of those women in that study group tested positive for Herpes Simplex? I’d like to know what the white stats are. And also to their advantage are the practitioners who give these exams. Would a white doctor be as quick to get one of us diagnosed and on medication as they would one of their own? I don’t believe any of it. What about all of the elderly women who haven’t had sex literally in years, what about the women who choose to be celibate. Are these women factored into these statistics. People can throw any number they want out there and we have no way of verifying their claims because these studies are done confidentially.

In my opinion, these numbers aren’t thrown out there to inform us, but rather to deflate us further as women. To make us look unclean and indifferent about our health. As if we don’t have enough to worry about concerning our children, environments, education, and the defection of so many of our men to white woman. Nothing positive about us is ever thown out there for the world to digest but there is always something negative to be said about black women. The average white person treats their dogs better than they treat us, why should we trust anything they have to say. If what they say is true, what is the Centers for Disease Control doing to make sure black women are treated and taught preventative measures?

Won’t even speak to the statistics, let’s just be careful out there and get yourselves tested regularly.

HOWEVER, People you have to remember that like with most studies this is an ESTIMATE…key word estimate. There’s no exact science to this, and since we’re dealing with stds this can potentially be way off.

For example…just because you have sex with someone with an std doesn’t automatically mean you’ll contract it. It’s possible this number might be true…and it’s possible this number might be false. Either way idc…it won’t stop me from dating black women

Especially with stds it’s a tricky and potentially VERY flawed estimate. Let’s say 5 guys have sex with 1 girl that has herpes for example…not all 5 guys may get the virus. The truth is it’s a hard number to tell…can be widely criticized…and in the end all it does is hurt an entire group of ppl in terms of perception. In all studies like this THEY SHOULD ALWAYS highlight the margin for error, methods used, and risk of flawed numbers. This is more about awareness than anything else…but it’s not an exact fact or science, and can potentially be wrong, which is why they had to throw in the word “estimate”

As for whites, Whites occupy 80% of the country. If 48% of them was the problem it would be way worse

Okay, I am officially confused. Black women have more herpes but no one dates them. I don’t know how this could be. I don’t have herpes and I am a black woman and young. As I stated earlier, how can black women have more STD’s but according to the media, no one dates, marry or even look our way. Most black women I know have degrees, and are married but most of the white girls I know don’t really have a goal, and they are not married.
