If I’m not mistaken, Essence Magazine is now controlled by a white (or non black) organization now, so this should not come as a surprise, and may not even be newsworthy since fashion is supposed to be color blind (or so we hope).

Sure a talented individual can successfully coordinate the fashion orientation. But face it, white-based mags, e.g. Redbook, Seventeen, etc. don’t have much to offer by way of Sistas. They CATER TO the euro-clowns.

Hit Time Warner and Essence magazine where it hurts: in their bloody pockets. When they are unable to generate revenue from subscription sales and Internet hits, their CPM rates will have to be lowered, and they will subsequently lose advertisers and profitability. Couple your benign boycott, with a few carefully crafted malignant words. Write a letter to the C-Suite of Time Warner (CEO, COO, CMO), and the publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Essence magazine. Let them know how you feel. If they owned a Hispanic, Arab or Asian magazine, I can guarantee you; they would not commission a white woman as the Fashion Director because they know that those communities would absolutely NOT tolerate it.

If you don’t mind having a white Fashion Director for your magazine, then continue to patronage Essence. If you do mind, take a stand: DON’T BUY ANOTHER ISSUE UNTIL THIS SITUATION IS RECITFIED. I was just reading this month’s issue of Essence with Janet Jackson on it, the first issue of my new subscription to Essence Magazine after over ten years. I did see prominent full page ads featuring Caucasians.

Yeah, integration is great, but not so great when all the other major main stream mags don’t feature blacks or African-descendants, especially those of us in the darker, broader and kinkier end of the ‘black’ spectrum. And God forbid a combination of all three. And they don’t hire African-descendants as directors and chiefs of their departments. Take Vogue Magazine for example, they’d rather feature Black barbies, or Black faced white models.

American culture is WESTERN culture. Anyone who comes at me on an Afro-centric fashion tip, that is the minority, not the majority fashion choice in the USA. I’ve lived in Atlanta, Los Angeles, ‘Nawlins, Toronto etc and have seen with my own choice people’s preferences for westernized fashions.

There are different types of fashion which are predominant within certain cultures. My mother has been reading Essence from as far back as I can remember. If this new director is doing a bad job, the viewership at Essence will obviously go down and therefore, those who run the magazine will have to assess the cause for the decline in readers. If they determine that it’s because the new director is not doing a good enough job to address the needs of the readers/viewers, then the director will be replaced.

It’s time that individuals start looking beyond pigments and start looking at content. After all, it’s how we want to be treated. What I will do is wish this new director luck and hope that they will maintain the standards of Essence Magazine. If they do a bad job, I’m sure my mom will let me here all about it.

It’s not the fact that Essence is white-owned ‘now’ than it is the disappointment of Black business people who sell-out valuable assets to these white corporations…And the list goes on: Johnson Hair Products, Black Entertainment Television (BET), Essence Magazine, Def Jam Records…How many of these former owners think to look back and realize the hard work, sweat and sacrifice they put into these brands? White people will never give you credit for the true value of your business, intellectual properties, talents, inventions, whatever, until they can own and control it for profit for themselves. This is what’s so depressing, to “give” something of value to the very people who made your life a living hell in the first place, and prompted you to go into business for yourself in the first place. Magazines like Essence had a distinctive market value because of the void it filled in promoting the business of beauty and health for Black women. Before this, there were such publications. “This” is what made the difference for Essence.

Be prepared to see millions of “Letters To The Editor” to Essence, starting in September…The editorial board will be flipping the script and turning out content that will totally contradict the concerns and issues facing “Black” women (its initial mission). Let the “De-Blacking” begin…(lol!)…

To be perfectly honest many people could careless about the fashion in this magazine most people actually read the articles…If she wasn’t announced as being White in this article no one would have probably known….Most people pick up Instyle or Vogue to see the new True Religions..Chloe….Louis ….or Gucci ….they are dedicated to fashion. Another thing if the magazine is owned by a corporation like Time Warner why the hell do you feel the staff will remain Black? I really wish that I had the time to read through the comments so that my comment would not be repetitious. Since I don’t, here is my opinion. I have been purchasing the Essence Mag for about 20 years. I’ve seen changes, more so when it was purchased by a white owner, but I had complaints before then. What I don’t particularly care for NOW is that within the magazine, there is too much emphasis put on “why black women CAN’T find a good black man, Yada, yada, yada. There are way too many articles mentioning this when there are way too many, more important, life issues that concern the black woman. Now, in regards to hiring a white fashion director, my problem with this is not that she’s WHITE. Because essence seemed to be getting the picture that ALL women are not shaped/built alike, they were showing clothing that somewhat catered to the “thick in the butt” black woman, and some of the articles were geared towards providing the heavier black woman with information on being healthier than we’ve been in the past. What concerns me is, I really don’t believe that the person that’s been hired will in any way consider the way most black women are built and the clothing that is flattering on our bodies. Why? Because that’s not her issue. She doesn’t have that dilemma. I really don’t think that would concern her when preparing fashion info or clothing to be viewed by the readers.

The answers in these posts are VERY INTERESTING, because they reveal how WE as individuals look at ourselves as a COLLECTIVE, & it also displays the TRUE COLORS of others. Now there’s this mad rush for “equality”…why can’t we have out own media.

But on the flip side, BET, Vibe, Ebony & Jet are owned by Whitey…sad.

In this day and age of people yearning and praying to get their foot in the door I dont knock anyone for succeeding. But in this particular case of a white woman being employed by essence, I’m sure our black culture was going to make an uproar but we have to remember that this is nothing new in our culture. In some historically black universities and colleges, there have been white people who have attended and even been bold enough to join fraternities. We as a people need to be holding & claiming our own as Malcolm X once said and not getting blinded by dollar bills, thats our biggest problem. Why would you post something of this magnitude. I think it’s very unimportant to mention a white director being hired for a black magazine. You should know why they did this. It’s all about the money so race played no part in the hiring decision. Put more emphasis on the midterm election in less than 100 days so we can keep Obama in the office for the next election. What is all the noise about. Essence has never been a black magazine from the day of its inception. It has always featured Light-skinned people of color. It catered to a particular economic sector of African American society. It has never been a mainstream magazine dealing with the issues faced by the so called average African American. We need to stop crying about the loss of a publication that represents the perspective of its Eurocentric owners. If anyone is so offended; in this country, you have the right to start your own magazine.

Ok but we are about %12 of the population plus partially due to how our ancestors came to be in this country we as a whole do not control that much wealth compared to those in the majority. So all that put together means that there will be less jobs available for us and the jobs that are available for us will be lower paid jobs and comparatively have less opportunity for growth. Also there is no longer the chance for an African American president since we are not the majority. i was a ESSENCE reader and subscriber since 1977 and @wrtelit u must have been reading another magazine becuz before TW the range of complexions covered ALL the hues of black women. i left ESSENCE. i won’t even browse thru on the net don’t even glance on the newstand. i knew the purchase was to whitewash us into GLAMOUR or COSMO. in short “BLACK WOMEN NO LONGER COME FIRST” and why is O pushing all her friends into black supported businesses ex: Gail King Show is gossip based and uninformative but we have lost one hour each of two strong shows in ATLANTA @ WAOK-1380; Powertalk and Warren B. to give Gail a try and she so every week day at 9am and call the VP of urban programming at CBS to tell him i dont like the changes and then i change the dial and leave just like i left ESSENCE

The Fashion Director is white and there will still be super skinny models with straight hair doing the modeling. You won’t even notice the change.
