When celebrating Black History Month, people tend to look back, instead of forward. And we don’t blame them. After all, it’s in the title – “history,” meaning all things memorable about the past. Here at HelloBeautiful we’d like to take the time to celebrate the amazing Black women who are making history as we speak.

JANELLE MONAE

She hasn’t yet released a debut album, but Janelle Monae is already a Grammy-nominated singer. If her name sounds familiar, you may have first heard it during an episode of “I Want To Work For Diddy,” where competing contestants were asked to plan a showcase for the emerging artist – after all, she signed to his Bad Boy Records in 2007. However, that wasn’t her original plan.

She had originally planned to release her first solo album, entitled “Metropolis,” as a concept album, made up of four parts and only available through her website and digital downloads. These plans were altered upon her signing with Diddy. The label gave an official and material release to “Metropolis: The Chase Suite” in August 2008 which, with only 7 songs, garnered her enough acclaim and attention to receive a 2009 Grammy nomination in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her song “Many Moons,” as well as opening spots for No Doubt, Erykah Badu, and Raphael Saadiq.

GALLERY: The “Black Girls ROCK” Awards

Now, she’s rocking a pompadour, saddle shoes, and a suit and tie, all while singing about robot revolutions and takeovers. She could be Andre 3000′s female counterpart – just as funky, not at all gimmicky, and understatedly talented. And yes, maybe a little weird. But weird people are genius. And what did he have to say about her?

“Ms. Monáe has one of the most enchanting voices of our generation. She’s a living, singing babydoll. Darling … just darling.”

After a series of sci-fi-soul EPs, the funk futurist says her debut album, The ArchAndroid, which is due out May 18, is not merely another collection of songs but an “EMOTION PICTURE.” Her influences include James Brown, Elvis, Judy Garland, Fiona Apple, Björk and Rodgers and Hammerstein, and she skillfully blends those respective genres, while emitting a message of hope and empowerment. She’s also a tiny but explosive ball of energy – a truly entertaining performer that can put on a show of indie rock, R&B, new wave, and show tunes.

“I wouldn’t know rock was rock, or R&B was R&B, until someone said that’s what it is. I just merely create the music and lyrics that feel good, and that move me.”

ZOE KRAVITZ

Most children with famous parents are very grateful that they’ve got an easy, immediate “in” to the industry, especially if they themselves want to be stars. But, at a certain point, you want to break away and create a name all your own.

Zoe Kravitz is on her way to doing just that. And she was able to do so without it being solely based on her looks because, let’s face it, she’s gorgeous. And that’s no shocker; after all, her parents are the equally beautiful Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz. But this girl’s actually got talent. Multiple ones. Call her a triple-threat (of some sort).

At just 21, the actress has completed and released five films, acting alongside acclaimed stars Terrence Howard and Catherine Zeta Jones.

She’s also the lead singer to Philadelphia-based band Elevator Fight. They’re slowly gaining recognition; a high point being playing the mainstage at Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic in June 2009, along with The Roots, themselves. Watch them perform their song, “Paloma”:

And, take our word for it, she’s a trendsetting fashionista. We wouldn’t be surprised if she started her own clothing line down the road, collaborated with a major fashion house, or became the next big designer’s muse.

Keep an eye out! (She’ll be appearing in four different films in 2010 alone - one of which features another “Woman To Watch For,” Gabourey Sidibe.)

She even won Jay-Z over. Here, she stars in his music video for “I Know”

Aaliyah’s music was surely what she was known for, but her trendsetting style was hard to ignore. No singer was able to strike a balance between two opposites quite like she could. She was all-woman while dressed fully in men’s attire. She was cute with a clean-cut image, but sexy and always sophisticated. Her fashion sense matured with her music, but we can’t forget those few trademark looks she wore so well (and that we tried to emulate).

Ten years ago, Aaliyah died in a tragic plane crash. Today is her birthday–we honor her effortless style:

1. Side-swept bangs. Aaliyah’s hair, long and layered, was one of her most prominent features, and rarely was she seen without her bangs in place. Swept across the side of her face, she gave us just a peak of her eyes. Female fans copied the beloved style as best they could.

2. Sunglasses. As she got older, her shyness faltered, and the shades came off, but for years – from the era of “Back N Forth” to the days of “One in a Million,” Aaliyah kept a pair of sunglasses on standby. The accessory only contributed to her being the epitome of cool.

3. Baggy Jeans. Aaliyah proved that boxers and baggy jeans were not just for rappers and thugs. She donned her denim just like the rest of the them, if not better. Low and slung below her waist, Aaliyah proved that she could run with the boys, but still be a lady.

4. Midriff-Baring. Seeing the singer with a full-length shirt on was a rarity. Bikini-style tops, and those that hit just above the belly-button were her preference from red carpets to music videos. With a flat stomach and trim waist, we couldn’t blame her, and we didn’t mind.

5. Bandana. No amount of cloth, bejeweled or not, could distract us from Aaliyah’s cascading locks, but she rocked a bandana, just as casually and comfortably as us non-celebrities would.

Check out Aaliyah’s fashion transformation over the years:

When the two married 6 years ago, all anybody could talk about was their 16-year age difference, but after chronicling their coupledom on Twitter for all their fans to see with cutesy messages back and forth, we all ate our words, assuming that they were solid.

However, when rumors of Ashton’s infidelity hit the net in October, it was clear that everything that glittered on the red carpet wasn’t gold. Sure enough, less than month after the reports surfaced, Demi decided to file for divorce this week. Could their age difference have had something to do with it, too?

Here are 5 other “cougar” relationships that have failed!

She bragged about their love on camera, but less than a year after their happy announcement, Slimm confirmed their split, blaming “negativity.”

They traveled the world together and were photographed showing passionate PDA everywhere from Italy to Brazil to London. But in February 2010, Luz reportedly dumped Madge; though she wasted no time scooping up another boytoy later that year, French dancer Brahim Zaibat – also 28 years her junior.

Tameka Foster & Usher (7-year age difference)

The singer and his stylist got hitched in August 2007, much to the chagrin of his loyal (and mostly female) fans. Just 3 months later, their son Usher Raymond V (aka “Cinco”) was born and in December 2008, their second son Naviyd arrived. But the kids couldn’t keep them together; in June 2009, Usher filed for divorce from Foster after claiming they lived separately for nearly a year. Following the announcement, Tameka made sure to stay in headlines through magazine interviews and Twitter rants.

Eva Longoria & Tony Parker (7-year age difference)

The actress and French basketball player met in the San Antonio Spurs locker room in 2003 and tied the knot on the (not so) lucky date of 7/7/2007. Just three years later, in November 2010, the couple announced their divorce following Tony Parker’s sexting scandal with a teammate’s wife. Eva quickly rebounded, however, with actress Penelope Cruz’s brother Eduardo – 10 years younger – and is now rumored to be dating another NBA baller, Matt Barnes, the ex-fiance of “Basketball Wives” cast mate Gloria Govan.

When my Senior Editor sent me a text late one night that only read “URGENT!!!” (preceded by two phone calls back to back), I was worried. Then when I responded and she only casually asked me about my plans for the next day, I was confused (and annoyed). It was only then she said, “No, you’re interviewing Beyonce.” And then I was happy. Like drug-induced happy. But that was quickly replaced by skepticism because I’m a jaded journalist and artists cancel all the time. ALL THE TIME. Minutes before. Hours later. Often with apologies that don’t matter. So, I refused to believe this news until I actually saw Beyonce in front of me, likely towering over me in heels I’d never be able to walk in and sporting the wavy hair I’ve been trying to perfect to no avail.

For the same reason (skepticism), I didn’t tell anybody either – hid it from my friends, family & co-workers – which I discovered is a lot like trying to hide the fact that you’re…well, pregnant. (Oh, me and Bey, one and the same! Not.) But that’s how it went down. I spent the rest of the night treating the interview as if it were a date, trying on clothes and tearing them off. Things I’d had for years suddenly didn’t fit. Things that once complemented each other were now clashing. Your mind really starts to unravel once it finds out it’s going to meet Beyonce. Just completely deteriorates. You become convinced (convinced, I tell you!) that if you dress just well enough, she’ll be so impressed, she’ll make you her stylist. And that if you ask the right question – one she hasn’t heard in her 15 years in the business – she’ll be so dazzled, she’ll make you her publicist. All current position-holders will be fired. You and Beyonce are now best friends. Now, try going to sleep knowing that your life’s about to change. TRY!

The Downtown Dream hotel did a very good job of pretending that one of most famous people in the world wasn’t inside of it, stories up in the Presidential Suite. But they did an even better job of acting like I didn’t belong there. There’s always an issue with “the list.” The damn list. Are you on it? Who are you with? Is that ‘cheese’ like mouse? Or ‘chess’ like the game? Finally, I was escorted to a floor that could only be accessed with a key you can’t touch. And brought to an all-white room (naturally) where I, and other journalists, were told to wait because Beyonce was taking a break. Which might as well have translated to “she’s resting” because nobody spoke over a whisper for the next 40 minutes. Nobody ate the cookies that were brought in and handed to (of course) a waiter on a dome-covered silver serving dish. Nobody sat. And the few that did, tip-toed over to the seat in their stilettos and slowly lowered themselves onto it, hoping to momentarily become weightless so as not to make a sound. And everybody wore black. Ha! So I would stand out.

We were all there to interview Beyonce about her third fragrance, Pulse. We could take no pictures and ask two questions each, none of which could be “personal.” Fun times. Julius the bodyguard poked his head out of the secret room her handlers had only gestured towards up until that point, but I didn’t take this warning seriously. Bright blue orchids accentuated the room, placed on tables alongside the same-color samples of the fragrance; the bottle, a uniquely-designed, upside-down structure topped (or bottomed?) with an asymmetrical chrome cap. Citrus notes in the front, vanilla in the back, and all around sexy. I doused myself in that s***. I was going to get something out of this, dammit! (Again, not believing any of this to be true.)

And then, it happened. After a lot of standing, and shifting weight, and checking the recorder to see if it was, indeed, still working and double-checking the notebook to make sure, ya know, the questions hadn’t disappeared off the page, we were summoned. And a chick cuts in front of me, making me second in line. I curse her under my breath. I walk in and Beyonce’s sitting there – all smiles, actually glowing – on a couch draped with a white fur throw, playing up the all-white room in a rich purple Catherine Malandrino maxi dress (with ruching around the belly of course) and yes, the hair. I introduce myself and mindlessly shake her hand. And then I curse myself under my breath because nobody respects or remembers a weak handshake, Danielle. Nobody. A missed opportunity if there ever was one. BFF mission aborted. [Follow me on Twitter at @DanielleSaid]

HB: Other than performing, what makes your pulse race?
Whenever I do a movie, I’m very nervous because it’s like my college. I’m never around new people for longer than a day unless maybe we’re touring. Because it’s something I do outside of my main job, I still feel like I have so much to learn. I get so inspired when I do a film and really learn about myself. A lot of it is psychological, you don’t judge the characters and it brings out things in you. So every time I do a movie, the first day when we have that table reading, I’m like, “Oh my God. What am I doing here?” [laughs] But I think that any beautiful moment in your life makes your pulse race. Even the scary pulse race is necessary for anything important because there is something, fear and anxiety, that makes you want to go and jump and just trust yourself and go to that next level. You always have the most personal growth when it’s something a bit scary.

HB: The faintest smell can bring back the most forgotten memory, what will you always remember about your surroundings from the moment you found out you were expecting?
That’s a good question! I can say right now, one of my favorite scents – before I wore fragrances, I wore baby lotion and baby powder. I think they smell so good…I just can’t wait to have an excuse to smell that way as an adult! [laughs]

Are you craving anything special now?
I don’t really have any different cravings from the ones that I had before. I’ve always liked food that is not good for you, and I still do. But I think I’ve been really good with eating healthy. I think probably the biggest thing is french fries, but that’s nothing new. Right now, I’m trying to force myself to drink water with lemon. Bo-ring.

Do you wear the same perfume every day?
I do. I’m really loyal and I’m really busy, so I have my fragrance in my bag, and every couple of hours, I go somewhere different and I [motions spraying her neck] ‘psst, psst, psst’ [laughs]. I like the idea of walking past and my husband saying, “My wife was here.” I like that idea.

What must-have beauty product would you give to your best friend?
All of my friends already have Pulse, so I would give them…what would I give them? What would I give them? I’m the worst! My friends always give me the products because I’m so behind, but I use a really good moisturizer called Diamond Creme by Natura Bisse. It’s really light. I’ve given it a lot, I always turn my friends onto it.

They say there’s a message in every bottle. What does Pulse say?
Electricity. Hopefully, this will bring out the electricity in every woman. Something you just can’t help but feel. I know the strength and confidence that I feel on stage was really put into the packaging and all of the passion behind the fragrance. And I hope that it’ll be very similar to the commercial, that everything you touch becomes lightning! [laughs]

There’s a lot of controversy over the messages kids are getting from pop culture. Will you let your child be exposed to it?
Of course! You can’t escape pop culture. I think it’s really important for your parents to be your parents and to communicate with their children and to lead by example and not preach. Then, your kids will respect and admire you. They won’t make certain decisions because they want to be like you and that’s hopefully the type of relationship I’ll have with my child. I know that’s how I was with my mother. When my friends’ parents told them things, they wouldn’t listen because they didn’t want to be like them, but I wanted to be like my mother. I believed what she said. There were certain things that just made sense because she lived it. And I think that’s how you raise your kids. You can’t blame another adult and their life choices on the choices that your children make.

What’s the best advice you got on confidence that you would tell little girls that look up to you?
My mother always taught me that beauty comes from within and you have to have more to you than outer beauty because it’s gonna fade. And I’ve noticed how many beautiful people are in the world. I mean, especially now! You have to have more than that and you have to really focus on personal growth and who you are and what you want to leave. What is your legacy?

What kind of woman wears Pulse?
A woman that wants to stand out. A woman that is powerful. A woman that is confident and sexy and strong. And a woman that wants to leave a lasting impression.

If you were to write for a book for mothers-to-be, what would the advice on the first page say?
I would want them to really think about how amazing they are and how lucky they are to be a woman. And how powerful they are. And I’d tell them to love every day of it because it’s the biggest miracle and a woman that’s able to give birth is the most important, lucky, fortunate woman in the world.

Pulse seems to be extension of your artistic work, how did you approach this new endeavor?
I think about Elizabeth Taylor who is one of the most beautiful icons and I think about her White Diamonds fragrance. She lives forever in the fragrance. I know she’s done incredible movies and she’s an icon for a lot of reasons but one of the things that is still so relevant right now, that kids and teenagers know her because of, is her fragrance. And for me to have the opportunity to have my statement fragrance and leave my legacy is really a huge accomplishment for me. I’ve endorsed other fragrances before this, but they weren’t mine. And for someone to ask you: ‘If you had a fragrance or a potion, what would it be?’ I had to really think about that. I have different emotions like every women, so every fragrance is a little bit different. It’s just a different experience and it teaches me about how I feel because the first thing we talk about when we develop the fragrance is, ‘What do you want to say?’ And I’m all about empowerment and enhancing inner beauty. All the product images have a glow coming from behind me because it’s all from here [points to chest] and this hopefully will bring it out and make you a little bit more confident when you walk into a room or go on a date or for a job or go on stage.

Are you looking forward to motherhood?
I am so looking forward to it. I made sure I had a strong foundation before I became pregnant and I think that’s the most important thing. There were a lot of things that I wanted to do personally so that when the time came, I really knew who I was and could be the best mother.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I just started my production company and I’ve been managing myself and I want to develop new artists and I want to do a maternity line. I want to get into health and fitness just because I did a song and choreography for kids to encourage them to move around and take cake of themselves because of child obesity. Before I was 9, I was a little chubby and my mom put me in dance classes and I fell in love. It gave me so much confidence. I just feel like music is great but being a singer or a celebrity or on magazines is not the only thing that my life is about, so figuring out ways to continue to encourage women and kids that admire me to leave a really good stamp on the world.

I hear you’re working on the remake of “A Star Is Born” with Clint Eastwood. Are you worried about the comparisons to Barbra Streisand?
If you’re comparing me to Barbra, that’s the biggest compliment! Please compare me to Barbra Stresiand [laughs]. I think she is incredible and I’ve learned a lot from her. She wasn’t afraid of taking risks and taking control. She directed. She has one of the most beautiful voices and can sell out a tour whenever she wants to. She’s an incredible mother. She has an Oscar and is a respected actress, as well as a respected singer. I just think she took control and that’s the way a woman is supposed to be. So it’s a lot of pressure, but it makes my pulse race! [laughs]

Vogue Italia’s recent “slave earrings” fashion feature has made heads turn. The same magazine that debuted it’s all-black model issue three years ago has just taken several steps way back.

Oh, tell me fashion bible, what exactly is a slave earring? Are there ships and sickles involved? No? Then how can, as you’ve written, a “circular shape” recall the greatest violation of human rights in history?

Yup, that’s right folks. Vogue Italia seems to believe hoop earrings are so vintage, they’re “slave”-like. Simple, oversized hoop earrings. The ones all kinds of women wear. But, at 70 words long, let’s just assume this article is void of research.

And to make matters worse, as if they anticipated the backlash, Vogue included a disclaimer in the article, giving reason to why us readers would be so wrong if we, ya know, actually thought that by “slave”…they meant “slave.” They wrote: ”If the name brings to the mind the decorative traditions of the women of colour who were brought to the southern Unites States during the late 18th century” – it does -”[then] the latest interpretation is pure freedom.”

Riiight. Freedom. From an earring. Shut up, Vogue, you’re not chronicling a women’s movement.

Backpedaling as best they could, Vogue has since changed the title to “Ethnic Earrings” because it seems they believe those words to be synonymous, which is even more sad.

I don’t do creamy liquor. I barely do fruity cocktails. If you hand me a Kahlua-infused drink or Bahama Mama, I honestly won’t know what to do with it. I’m a vodka-seltzer kind of girl, simple and to the point. It gets me where I need to be without a sugar rush, headache or stomachache.

BUT, when we, here at the HB offices, heard about Pharrell’s Qream liqueur launch party last month (to which we weren’t invited, but all is forgiven, and you’ll see why!), our interest peaked.

After all, we’d heard good things. Really good things. First, that it was catered to women which, let’s be honest, is what HB is all about. Second, it was low in calories, lower than those found in a glass of red wine. Wine, people! That’s everyone’s guiltless go-to drink! Third (and this is more personal), it was dairy-free; a plus for me since I’m lactose-intolerant. And finally, not only was it dessert-inspired, but it could literally be baked, poured and cooked into sweets. Into them. Cupcakes, cream puffs, parfaits…

So, after we picked our salivating mouths up from off the floor, we got ourselves a bottle. And though the vodka can in fact be mixed into a cocktail, we opted for having it on the rocks: just Qream, ice and some styrofoam cups (don’t judge). The reactions were unanimous.

It was light. Silky, even. A not-too-thick type of consistency. It didn’t coat our tongues and overwhelm our taste buds. The Peach flavor was so subtly sweet, we likened it to a Creamsicle. Even a hesitant male co-worker begrudgingly admitted through his teeth, “Not bad.” We immediately started looking up pastry recipes and picturing all the scenarios a sip would be perfect in – hello, girls’ night in! And soon after the last pour, we wanted to get the Strawberry-flavored version.

If you need further convincing, the 750ml bottle is less than $30. So both your body and your wallet won’t feel guilty afterward. Go!

If you haven’t heard of Lady Emmy, get familiar. She’s a beauty & lifestyle expert, with a niche for women, family and relationship counseling. In other words, HelloBeautiful personified! We got the chance to catch up with the sometime model and TV personality to talk about how to improve your self-esteem, her favorite beauty products and, of course – as conversation always ends up – men!

What are the top 3 must-have beauty products for African-American women this summer?
Sunblock! Many African-American women are not wearing a good sunblock every day. Everyone needs it for all body parts that will be exposed to the sun – especially the face, neck, hands, and lips! It should have an SPF of 30 or higher and be oil-free. It helps to prevent skin cancer as well as prevent sun damage which causes premature aging of the skin. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sunblock SPF 70! It is light, non-greasy, and layers invisibly under make-up.

Hair Polish or Gloss: The sun and heat of the summer can really dry out the hair. Use an alcohol free, hair polish or gloss to give your hair moisture and great shine without weighing down the hair. Rub On Shine by Influance or Power Gloss by Straight Request is perfect!

Brown Sugar Scrub: Exfoliate your entire body to remove dead skin cells that cause your skin to appear dull, dry, and rough. A good brown sugar scrub will give you soft, smooth, glowing skin without irritating or being too rough on the skin. Using the scrub on your legs before waxing or shaving, will also give you an even smoother result. Brown Sugar Polish by Fresh or you can make your own at home
with brown sugar, honey, and olive oil.

For Lady Emmy’s words of wisdom on improving your inner (and outer) self, and what to do when your relationship is at a standstill, head over to our sister site Elev8!

You can catch Lady Emmy this summer at the HBA Global Beauty Expo in New York City (June 28-30), the Image Expo in Houston (July 10-11) or the Black Women’s expo in Chicago (August 6-7).

Beyonce’s song “Girls (Who Run The World)” is finally here in it’s entirety. Largely sampling Major Lazer’s “Pon de Floor,” Bey does what she does best: encourages her fellow femmes with empowerment anthems.

This is certainly not the album version – unless she’s citing Lil’ Jon as a featured guest – but you can expect drumline effects, popping and electro elements.

Now that you’ve heard it, here’s our take. Our honest first impression: “This is annoying.” And why? Here’s our analysis.

First, we understand that repetition is needed when attempting to make something catchy, but this is “girl” overload. Hearing the same phrase said a thousand times over within the first 45 seconds of a song makes us want to press “skip” unless we hear something new – like, soon!

Second, the lyrics, while perfect for a call-and-repeat chant for all her stans & followers, are structured in a way that completely lack melody. Her voice just doesn’t sound as pretty as we know it could. There’s a way to sound in control without being monotone, Bey.

Lastly, the arrangement is all over the place. As soon as we finally catch up with her speedy verse, she’s onto the bridge (we think) and then back to finishing part two of the verse (we think?). We’re not even sure what the chorus is. Or when the song will finally be over.

Our honest final impression? This track is gonna have to grow on us. And by that we mean: next single, please.

She was all-woman, but dressed fully in men’s attire. She was cute with a clean-cut image, but sexy and always sophisticated. Her fashion sense matured with her music, but we can’t forget those few trademark looks she wore so well, and we so tried to emulate.

The bowler hat has long been associated with the London mobster look. It adds a sense of edge and sometimes a hint of danger.

Floppy 70′s Hats
Floppy hats, reminiscent of the 70s, add a bohemian flair to any look. They work well on the beach, in a maxi dress, with sandals, and so on.

Turban
The turban is glamourous, demure and surprisingly versatile. Wear it on your worst hair day and you’ll still look amazing, without even trying.

NNEKA

Nneka’s come a long way since performing as the opening act for Sean Paul. In fact, we can’t sense even a hint of empty lyrics about booty-shaking and windin’ up in her songs. There is a bit of reggae in the backdrop, though. Along with hip-hop, rock, soul, and Afro-beats, all working together to create one hell of an eargasm.

Singing mostly in English, with occasional riffs in her traditional Nigerian language of Igbo, Nneka delivers rich vocals and tons of emotion — all while looking tough as hell, but still approachable. Compare her to Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu if you must, but labeling her the leader of the 2010 pack won’t hurt either. And it wouldn’t go without reason.

She recently toured across the country, finishing up in Chicago on Valentine’s Day, in support of her first U.S. release, “Concrete Jungle,” which is actually a compilation of her first two critically acclaimed European albums. (Much of her music heard in the U.S. has already been released in Europe and Africa, where Nneka is already a star, so it’s time the rest of us caught up.)

“Concrete Jungle” showcases Nneka as unafraid of bearing witness to hypocrisy and social and political injustice (source). The 2009 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Award winner says,

“Nigeria is a tough place to grow up. Tribal wars, oil company exploitation, corrupt political leaders … I never really thought about becoming somebody; it was more about waking up with no pressure in a peaceful surrounding. But growing up like that has made me who I am.”

Nneka’s music is raw and sensual, as evidenced on lead single “The Uncomfortable Truth” (an iTunes Single of the Week).

As you know, HelloBeautiful is all about women: uplifting and inspiring, legendary and up-and-coming.

And we were granted access to seeing some promising acts take stage, thanks to the Hennessy Artistry events going down in New York City. Don’t be surprised if you hear these names for years to come: Wynter Gordon, Erin Christine, and Maluca.

Just as Hennessy mixes the finest eaux-de-vie in the world to create each product, Hennessy Artistry embodies this philosophy by mixing unique musical talent and providing the finest mixed drinks to create an exceptional blend of music, style, culture and people.

On September 29 at S.O.B’s, WYNTER GORDON‘s voice was heard, before she was even seen.

From the shadows, she requested her music be turned up. She approached the stage nothing but a leotard and blazer, her hair as big as Leela James. But she won’t be crooning soul and sad songs for the next half hour. In fact, she prances around, playfully teasing her two male dancers (and the audience) as she solidifies her title as “Dance Party Diva.” If you haven’t yet heard her debut single “Dirty Talk,” download it now, set a strobe light up in your room, throw some glitter in the air and do your best not to dance. We dare you. Gordon isn’t all show, though. She’s not just a hype woman. She closes her set singing a cappella – and sure it was about a man become her “Toy Friend,” but the subject matter didn’t make her voice any less impressive.

_

On October 5 at the Canal Room, ERIN CHRISTINE sauntered onto the stage to Kanye West’s “Coldest Winter.”

She stared down the audience to prove she wasn’t shy. She begins to play the piano – always an added bonus for a new starlet showcasing her talent. The start is slow, but strong, and this is when we realize that her unassuming presence and stature does not match her voice at all. (Christina Aguilera, anyone?) Notes are held, loud and long. There are no dancers, no obnoxious light show to blind us, just Erin Christine giving a completely stripped down version of herself, as well as her song “Say.” She gets so emotional, she forgets to sing into the mic, her hands begin shaking and, as cliche as it sounds, I get goosebumps.

_

On September 22 at the Brooklyn Bowl, MALUCA entered the room.

And she did so in a manner that only a confident woman could pull off; after all she was wearing a silver cat suit that bounced light off of it at every angle, and black platform motorcycle boots. We weren’t sure if we should be scared, but the 28-year-old wasted no time making a statement. Maluca, meaning “crazy girl” in Portuguese has stated before: she doesn’t “do your typical Latina pop music,” but that doesn’t mean her work won’t 1) be culturally-inspired and 2) be popular. Her first single, “El Tigeraso,” was Latin electro at it’s best. And by the end of the second song she had already dumped a glass of cold water over herself. Her moves were animated and erratic, and even if they appeared to be seizure-induced, you couldn’t help but move, too.

Blackface, despite all its negative connotation and proven degradation, has appeared on the pages of Numero magazine’s latest issue.

But this isn’t the first time. Blackface has become the latest (and most disturbing) of all fashion editorial trends. If it meant never having to see it again, we’d willingly put our better judgment aside and indulge in the extremely questionable Fall fads of faux fur coats and latex dresses.

French model Constance Jablonski is the latest to turn from model to minstrel act.

But she takes her black power to another level; after all, black power is nothing without an afro and a black baby to match. (And a field to sit them in because civility and black culture can’t go hand-in-hand. That’s absurd!)

Though Jablonski’s artificial “Mommy and Me” photo spread is far from the first in the Blackface Blow-Out Sale, it doesn’t take the sting out of seeing it.

First, it was Lara Stone in French Vogue, then Sasha Pivovarova in V magazine, then Tyra Banks, in all her ground-breaking, history-making glory, felt the need to have her “America’s Next Top Model” contestants don face paint during a “challenge.” What was the challenge, TyTy? The Plight of A Black Woman?

Claudia Schiffer (see: another supermodel that should’ve known better) followed suit in a Stern Fotografie magazine spread of Karl Lagerfeld’s work.

We wish these magazines would’ve come to us if they we’re having trouble finding and booking a black model.

We’ve seen (and profiled) plenty: Chanel Iman, Jeneil Williams, Joan Smalls, Jourdan Dunn, Kelly Moreira, Ayan Elmi, Sedene Blake, and Fatima Siad.

Take your pick, idiots.

Gabourey Sidibe appears on the cover of the October 2010 issue of Elle magazine. The feature regards her as one of the mag’s favorite 25-something entertainers. But while the title is something to be proud of, it seems the cover isn’t.

Elle magazine is under fire for allegedly lightening the skin of the actress.

Of course, they are denying this, saying:

“We have four separate covers this month and Gabby’s cover was not retouched any more or less than the others.”

Editor-in-chief Robbie Myers said,

“It sort of boils down to this: at a photo shoot, in a studio, that is a fashion shoot, that’s glamorous, the lighting is different. The photography is different than a red carpet shot from a paparazzi.”

But here Gabourey is in Harper’s BAZAAR (below), another high-fashion, “glamourous” magazine, and her skin color looks as it naturally would.

The other three covers that Myers speaks of feature actresses Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, and reality show star, author and fashion designer Lauren Conrad – all white women with, as expected, petite bodies.

It should be noted as well that while the other three girls received a full body shot for their cover photos (see below), Gabourey scored only a close-up – from her bosom to her hairline (which, by the way, may be rocking the worst-looking weave known to man).

While the other three ladies strike a sassy pose – frail arms, tiny waists, and trendy outfits center stage – Gabourey is awkwardly squeezed into her frame, shortchanging the rest of her curves.

What should we complain about first?

That she didn’t receive the same treatment in terms of hair, styling or make-up?

That her skin has, without a doubt, been lightened despite Elle’s denial?

Or that her body type didn’t receive as much shine as the rest?

And lastly, it’s obvious that we should be disappointed, but should we really be surprised?

See other photos from the shoot here: Elle Names Janelle Monae & Gabourey Sidibe It’s “Favorite 25-Something” Stars

It’s been almost a decade since the September 11 terrorist attack on New York City’s World Trade Center. Over the last few years, celebrities have banded together to sing songs, both uplifting and straightforward, that pay tribute to the victims and families of the tragedy. Here, we picked our top 5 musical tributes to 9/11.

5.

“What More Can I Give?” – Michael Jackson, Mya, Mariah Carey, Usher, Brian McKnight, Ziggy Marley, Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, Beyonce, and Luther Vandross
Recorded as a charity single by Michael Jackson and more than 35 other artists, the goal was to raise $50 million for numerous charities in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks. The single was never released due to a conflict between Jackson and Sony Music. However, on October 21, 2001, the song was performed at another 9/11 benefit concert called United We Stand: What More Can I Give?.

“How many times can we turn our heads / And pretend we cannot see / Healing the wounds of our broken earth / We are one global family / Just sending your prayers / Is something you feel / Helping one heal / What have I got that I can give”

4.

The “9/11 Freestyle” – Jay-Z
This freestyle was said to have debuted at the Blueprint Live Tour and on DJ Clue’s Stadium Series Part 3 mixtape. Jay-Z’s sixth studio album “The Blueprint” was released on the day of the terrorist attack, a week earlier than planned, to combat bootlegging. Despite being overshadowed by the 9/11 tragedy, the album sold over 426,000 copies in its opening week, and was certified two times platinum.

“Bootleggers, bombers, Bin Laden / I’m still crackin’ / I will not lose / I simply refuse / I dropped the same day as the twin towers / I show power / Still, I show compassion for others / Send money and flowers / Devote hours”

3.

“Never Too Far / Hero” Medley – Mariah Carey
Mariah sang this at America: A Tribute to Heroes, a benefit concert broadcast by the four major United States television networks in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Done in the style of a telethon, it aired September 21, 2001, uninterrupted and commercial-free, and featured a number of national and international entertainers performing to raise money for the victims and their families.

“Never too far away / I won’t let time erase / One bit of yesterday / Cause I have learned that / Nobody can take your place / Though we can never be / I’ll keep you close to me / When I remember”

“And then a hero comes along / With the strength to carry on / And you cast your fears aside / And you know you can survive / So when you feel like hope is gone / Look inside you and be strong / And you’ll finally see the truth / That a hero lies in you”

2.

In October 2001, an album was released by a group of popular recording artists under the name “Artists Against AIDS Worldwide.” On it were multiple versions of Marvin Gaye’s 1971 hit “What’s Going On” intended to benefit AIDS programs in Africa. However, the song was recorded shortly before the September, 11, 2001 attacks, and it was decided that a portion of the song’s proceeds would benefit the American Red Cross’ September 11 fund, as well.

Welcome to our third HelloHandsome post, where we profile deserving young men – men on the rise and men on our radar!

Not many artists can say that they were signed after a single session. Much less have the opportunity to say that said management company was founded by the anomaly that is Jay-Z. And even after confessing that feat, it isn’t likely that that same artist would’ve spent his pre-teen years learning the alto-sax at the Hartford Conservatory and years later be accepting an ASCAP award for writing one of the top-played songs of 2009. But RocNation’s newest signee RANGE is just that, and has done all that.

Of his immediate signing, the Philadelphia-born 24-year-old singer/songwriter/producer says, “There was a bit of shock to it, but it’s what I’d been working for.”

The diligence did not go unnoticed. Coming out from behind the shadows of Jamie Foxx, T-Pain, and Ludacris (who he penned the winning “One More Drink” tune with), Range is working on his debut album, No Strings. And you can expect just that: no extra noise, no bells and whistles. While his first song “Ghetto Dance” may feature a collabo with Rick Ross, Range says that, for now, the album will be “just me, so I can let the fans get to know me, and appreciate me.” We’re ready.

__

The word “ghetto” has a certain stigma attached to it. Were you nervous about naming your very first single that and, ultimately, being introduced to the public that way?
No. It doesn’t mean anything negative to me. It was just about all the different places in the world and the creative energy that comes from these places and the type of dances that they make up – the ones you see from New Orleans and Florida to New York and Connecticut. I’m just talking about that. It’s a fun song. We shot it in Miami. [SEE THE VIDEO BELOW!]

It’s been said that your mother played the cello and at the age of 12, you enrolled in the Hartford Conservatory.
I listened to everything because of that reason. I remember my mother had me watching classical things – Amadeus Wolfgang, that movie on him. I liked pop music; that was the only thing that was really allowed in my house anyway, the Mariahs and Whitneys. [My house] wasn’t strict, but my mother watched the content of things. But then I had my own personal music and that’s where I had all my Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.

Can we expect any live music on the album?
I mean, you can hear my tracking, my programming! I co-produced “Ghetto Dance” with Stargate, but as far as live piano playing and guitar, no. Not yet.

Why did you choose to major in business instead of music in college?
Because I know it should be called “business music” instead of “music business.” I know how much the business runs it, so I kinda wanted to be aware of things I should look out for and just pay attention. It helped to teach me what to pay attention to because I went there for business administration, but my entrepreneurship classes, I took a lot from those to create my own businesses as well.

On the mixtape with DJ Drama, you have song called “Baby,” in which you make a pretty bold request. Is it safe to say you don’t mind being a sex symbol?
Nah, I’ll be a sex symbol! I’m cool with that.

What do you want to achieve within the next five years, as well as with this album?
Five years? I wanna have successful albums by that point, meaning units sold and the fans that I’m reaching, to the point that I’m considered a top entertainer and respected by my peers and my fans. But with this album, I want to show that I’m talented, that I’m passionate, and…I’m a ladies man! [Laughs] Right now, it’s just me. We can have fun. I’m not gonna hurt you. I love, I’ve got my heart broken, I’ve gone through those things.

Three tangible things you can’t live without?
Hmm. I’ma keep away from family. I’ma say sneakers, iPod, video games.

What secret urge do you get often, but never act on?
Calling up a girl that I was with in the past that’s no good for me. I stop myself. It’s definitely a drunk-dial feeling, but I’m not drunk.

If you had to do karaoke, what one song would you sing?
“I Can’t Sleep,” R. Kelly. That’s my joint.

If you were forced to get a tattoo at gunpoint, what would you get?
I’d probably get words that say “I was forced to get this at gunpoint.” [Laughs]

What’s your vice and where do you get it?
Oh, man. I like good food. I like hood spots. I’m a sucker for hood Chinese, Wendy’s… New York City is my favorite city. I just like the type of grind out here. I live in Queens now, but I’m gonna come to the heart of it next year, right in Manhattan.

What do you look for in a woman?
Aside from a pretty face? The ability to listen! [Laughs] To when I need consoling and when a point needs to be proven. We both need to listen. And a sense of humor because I like to laugh and she needs to laugh at my jokes. All of them.

When was the last time you cried?
Full-out cry? Probably “The Lion King,” the movie. I was a kid. Actually, I lied, I cried at “Prince Of Egypt,” too. I didn’t want to. “The Karate Kid” had me almost wanting to cry, the end of it. The pictures they had of Jada and Will and their son, it was just touching. Reminded me of my life – my great home life, and what I want to provide for my kid. [Pause] When I have them. None yet, but I’ma get it poppin’ one day.

I’ve never quite understood the lifestyle of the “label whore”:

She who spends all her savings on the latest Louis Vuitton bag only to find that, upon her exit of the mall, every woman walking by and whistling nonchalantly holds the same thing, but in variation.

She who rips the back pockets off her jeans and the tongues off her sneakers and re-sews them with a monogrammed patch of fabric, turning her average style into a customized (but entirely fake and desperate) costume.

She who will, very willingly, pay 10 times the amount worthy of a plain, short-sleeved, cotton T-shirt, simply because it exclaims “GUCCI,” but fits exactly the same as a Hanes – just “eh.”

1.

Designer John Galliano has recognized these women and their childish need of “wanting to belong,” has ignored said psychological issue, and instead decided: bank on it!

With the creation of the Christian Dior Contact Lenses, women can now sell their eye to the devil (dressed in Dior drag) because, now impacted with a sheen of gold and an iconic “CD” logo, your eyes will no longer serve as the windows to your soul, but to that of a fashion house that has no idea who you are. And now, you’ve joined the ranks of Kanye West and Nicki Minaj – all you’ve done is name-check them, and they haven’t “checked” you anything in return, not a cent.

2.

Designer Karl Lagerfeld, forever the narcissist, also jumped on the “brand-a-bobblehead” bandwagon. He sent models upon models down this year’s Paris Spring/Summer runway, each plastered with pieces from his Les Trompe-L’oeil De Chanel Tattoo set. Surely, they were temporary but, unfortunately, his desire to sell them to the masses was not. A fake tattoo doesn’t seem fake at all once it breaks your pocket for $75. And honestly, if you were truly a die-hard fan, you could get the same logo done, for about the same price in a hole-in-the-wall New York parlor. So if you’re gonna do it, really do it, you label whore.

3.

The Louis Vuitton nail designs and decals are a different story entirely. There’s nothing like tap-tap-tapping away at your desk during your graveyard shift at the job that you’ve only acquired to try and make enough money to afford the actual luxury items that are currently being poorly represented on the tips of your nails – the nails that sadly stare back at you as you, ya know, tap-tap-tap. Way to come full circle!

Urban Dictionary describes “brand whore” as:

Someone who buys and prominently displays name brand products (or products that feature large corporate logos) under the belief that such loyalty to a label or corporation is a cachet and brings prestige to their otherwise lack of taste, regardless of the actual quality or value of the products.

Say what you will about Michael Jackson, but the influence he had on the fashion industry is just as notable as his mark in music. The King of Pop understood the power of the costume, both on and off the stage. There are several looks that upon first glance will always remind us of MJ. Here, on the 1-year anniversary of his death, we honor him by reviewing his inimitable, legendary style.

10. Cropped Pants
Leave it to Michael Jackson to make highwater pants something other than the go-to gear for nerds (Remember, Urkel?). He was unapologetic in hiking them up, and made sure to give them the attention they deserved by doing a pelvic thrust every now and then.

9. White Socks
Prior to MJ, the rule for showing your socks was simple: Don’t do it. He knew better than to keep them as an undergarment though, and instead brought them to the light. Starting yet another trend, he wore them white, woolly, thick, and glittered.

8. Red Leather Jackets
The video for 1982′s “Beat It” featured a young Mike donned in a zipper-accented, crimson-colored jacket. Just a year later, Jackson appeared in “Thriller,” and debuted a single red peak-shouldered motorcycle jacket. The two items defined the decade, spawning a national craze for leather bombers. Watch below:

7. Aviators
Regardless of the reason, MJ was rarely seen without sunglasses. He rocked aviator specs for years, and whether it was to hide his latest plastic surgery or not, it helped him epitomize “cool.”

6. Military-style Jackets
Broad shoulders, a short cut, and a whole lot of embellishments gave way to the revamping of the simple blazer. Michael made sure to wear his military-style jackets with glitter, gold, tassels, and sashes. Most memorably, he rocked one – navy blue, baby blue, and glittered all over – to his visit to the White House with President Reagan in 1984.

5. Fedoras
Michael wore the popular felt hat often – creased down the crown and pinched on the sides – and he wore it well. Usually cocked slightly to the right or the left, the hat remained a simple black. But the King of Pop made sure to make a bold statement in 1988′s “Smooth Criminal” video with an all-white replacement that matched an all-white suit. Watch below:

4. Gold Lamé
Nothing draws more attention to a crotch grab, then when said crotch is adorned in gold lamé. During the 1996 – 1997 HIStory tour, audiences saw Michael in the form-fitting metallic fabric – pants, shin guards, leotards and all, we couldn’t ignore it, but we loved him regardless.

3. Black Loafers
The classic low-top penny loafer was once representative of the preppy culture. But MJ turned that idea on it’s head when he donned the shoe in a patent sheen or a wingtip hybrid, and drew our attention to them by using all the fancy footwork he could fathom.

2. Hair
Whether it was styled in an afro, a jheri curl, or a straightened blow-out, we watched Mike’s hair like we did his moves. His hair evolved with his music and sense of fashion, and though at times his choices were questionable, they were always memorable.

1. White Glove
When Michael performed “Billie Jean” on 1983′s television special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, he not only premiered the moonwalk, but a little white glove that would go down history. The bejewelled outerwear embodied a bit of magic and a bit of mystery. It was auctioned off in Australia in September of last year and was expected to fetch $200,000. Watch below:

We miss you, Michael!

Radio killed the Jay-Z and Alicia Keys collabo, “Empire State Of Mind.” That much is certain. But when the anthem began to play one night, it felt like we – meaning every woman in Radio City Music Hall – hadn’t heard it in years. People snapped, swayed, threw their arms in the air and chanted along. Was this a concert? A radio station’s “throwback tune at noon”? No. It was simply the opening track to “Sex And The City 2.” The energy in the room was so overwhelming and, after an hour delay, so was the impatience-assisted anticipation, that we really couldn’t help ourselves.

Carrie enters, sashaying through swinging double doors, of course, right on beat, in golden glittered shoes that remind us she is New York City’s modern Dorothy. Shots of the entire city glisten and sparkle. Even the opening credits are bedazzled. Emerald City, indeed.

Leave it to stylist Patricia Fields to satisfy our fashion fixation, front and center, within the first five minutes. But don’t expect to be wowed throughout the entire film by Jimmy Choos and Louboutins, as was the case with the first film. Yes, the clothes play their part (and do it well – I dare you not to laugh during the 80′s flashback!), but this movie, it becomes increasingly clear, is all about the shots, the scenery, the visuals. After all, there were screams throughout the theater when nothing but a house appeared on the big screen. Granted, it was a mansion, but you get my drift.

The writers don’t fail us either. Again, within minutes, there is heavy talk about gays, marriage and, well, cheating once the first two combine. Here is where we are reminded that Sex & The City, as much as it is about fashion and decadence, is really about relationships – failed, unhealthy, loving, and lost. (P.S. If you don’t know which two gays could possibly be getting married, you are not a true fan!)

Enter the so not stereotypical presence of Liza Minnelli, and expect your first (of at least three!) supercorny cringeworthy film moments.

Another one will look like this:

And leave it to the ladies to bring out the worst at a wedding. At this supposedly “joyous” occasion, we learn that:

Carrie and Big, on the way to their two-year anniversary, have hit a rut; after all, they’re certainly out of their “honeymoon” stage, but still have not talked kids so…now what?

Steve is still playing second fiddle to Miranda‘s Blackberry. As usual, she’s all work and no play, missing her son Brady’s school events left and right.

And Charlotte and hubby Harry’s new daughter Rose is mentioned, but doesn’t yet make an appearance – and for good reason. Apparently, she’s entered the “terrible twos.” Really terrible. So terrible that Charlotte, whose only aspiration is to be “Mommy of the Year, is too embarrassed and prideful to discuss the troubles publicly.

Samantha though finds someone to have sex with at the wedding – obviously. And we believe she comes out unscathed. But lo and behold, she gets her very own storyline. Struggling to come to terms with her age, Sam does everything in her power to avoid menopause-ridden hot flashes. Everything.

Add one trip to the (cinematic charm! beautifully-shot! planning-my-next-vacay-right-now!) land of Abu Dhabi, and you’ve got a surefire film hit on your hands. Save for a few disastrous moments, like the ladies disrespectfully donning burkas as a form of disguise (why??).

But as expected, everyone’s got issues! This is one girls trip gone wrong. Samantha can’t get horny anymore (hint: police obtain her sacred pills!), Charlotte can’t get in touch with her husband (hint: he’s at home with the hot, foreign nanny) and Carrie, whose husband is currently requesting “days off” from their marriage, runs into Aidan – the one that got away. Duh. That’s gotta mean something, right? Right?

Enjoy the film, ladies!

So Chris Brown and Tyga released a mixtape last night called ‘Fan of a Fan’ and on one track Chris tries to fool us all by naming it “Ain’t Thinking About You” but he clearly IS thinking about “you” – if “you” means Rihanna.

“We done been together for a minute / now it feels funny to be doing something different / but it’s all good, me and you finished / you got a ball player but a n**** ain’t trippin’ / and I ain’t sayin’ that he don’t love you / but I don’t think he love you like I do / But it’s okay, it’s alright, my blackberry’s filled with a whole bunch of women”

But this isn’t the first time Chris Brown has attempted to get his ex back through song. We’ve heard the old adage, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” but someone on Brown’s management team should have told him that it doesn’t apply when the only thing you’re succeeding at is public humiliation. Here are four more of his failures.

AUGUST 2009 – “Changed Man”

Just six months after their much-publicized incident, Chris Brown releases his first apologetic gem. He hoped this would distract us from his probation sentencing, but instead we just shook our heads in unison, completely unaware of the fact that this track would be the first of many. Did she get your flowers, Chris?

“Ima make it up to you / And show the world / I’m a changed man / … / And everybody hates Chris / They can never understand / So can we love / Can we love again? / … / Saying I’m sorry / Doesn’t make it all right / I know, I know / But I believe that we can make it.”

Was Chris Brown Performing At A BOXING Match A Good Idea?

SEPTEMBER 2009 – “Hollow”

We get it Chris. You’re empty, you’re incomplete, you’re hollow. It’s a very clever analogy. Has Rihanna called you back yet?

“Baby I’ll admit, I made a mistake / Don’t know what I was thinking / what I had was so great / … / Only so much I can take, this love is broken down / Come rescue me, I need your arms / Gently wrapped around / Say you need me.”

OCTOBER 2009 – “So Cold”

Out of all Chris’ leaked tracks, this one actually made his “Graffiti” album. And he made sure to place it within the first 5 songs, so that when Rihanna got the signed copy he sent her through jail mail, she’d hear it before the album bored her to sleep.

“Damn I want my baby back / It’s so cold without her / cold without her, she’s gone / Now I’m alone, no one to hold on / cause she was the only one / and I know I was dead wrong”

Around the end of the year, someone decided to hand Chris Brown back his manhood. He started feeling bold again. In fact, he released this vengeful little tune declaring how much of a catch he was. But no one agreed.
