As I got  opinions on the topic, I couldn’t help but wonder why such a debate was so hard to answer in the first place? Why is it so hard to define the two?

Why do they even exist in the first place? What are the implications in being “thick” and those in being “fat”?

One person said that if your stomach pokes out more than your breast, congrats your fat! But what about those people who are apart of the itty-bitty titty committee? Fat by default?

Another said if a person is sloppy and have flab that hangs in all the wrong places.

One even dared to say, “fat” is a person who is self-conscious, and, overall, has zero flavor, they’re fat versus “thick” as well kept, clean, confident, and exudes copious amounts of flavor.

So if you’re 800 lbs., but hey you can dress, you’re thick?

Generally, people had a very hard time answering a question that I assumed we all knew the answers to. Responses got so complex that sub-levels of thick and fat began to show up.

I never knew there was a “big girl” thick, a “fat girl” thick, and a “skinny girl” thick. What happened to the good old days when you were either skinny or fat?

And why do we consider being thick (which, I was told, is just a happy meal away from fat) to be ideal?And why is fat just not hot?

Take this scenario into thought. Ladies, have you ever been out and about, and a guy attempt to talk to you and give you compliments? If  he calls you “thick” are you offended? Are you ready to curse him out? Do you take off your earrings and pull out the vaseline? Of course not! You’d feel good.

But think back to when Forever 21 launched their sister collection, Faith 21, for plus size women. They indirectly linked Kim K to their plus-size collection, which caused Kim to have a bit of a temper tantrum. Let’s be real, Kim is not really a “big girl”  but does have a whole lot of “big girl” assets.

Are thick and fat the same?

Where does thickness  end and fatness begin? And why is “fat” such a horrible thing?

And really what’s the big damn deal?

Rarely have I had the honor or privilege to meet someone that only stands for something amazing and powerful, but does so with such grace and kindness as with Gwen Devoe.

If you have not heard of this intriguing woman, than certainly you have heard of the many things she’s doing and has done for the plus-size community. Last year she produced and launched one of the most talked events in the plus-size  industry since the leggings made a comeback. The event better known as Full Figured Fashion Week. Check out the interview HelloBeautiful’s, Alyssa Manners had with Gwen as she discusses the hardship of the fashion industry, and why she finally said “enough was enough.”

Alyssa Manners: What made you decide to get into the fashion industry?

Gwen Devoe: Well, there were a lot of reasons. The first official reason is, I began as a freelance plus-size model myself. I began modeling with my best friend, Sharon Quinn. Sharon and I were very, very different. Our mannerisms are different. We look different, and it just became obvious to me that, though I was a great runway walker, back then, and even now, you only made money doing print work for plus-sizes because no one was really ready to see big girls on the runway. Even on the local circuit, I realized was going to make any money at it. I photograph okay, but I need some Photoshop! (laughs) On the other hand, my girlfriend was just flawless. Even in photo booths, she always looked like she had on make-up and was just amazingly flawless. And this is the one thing I teach aspiring plus-size models. You have to know your role, and where you fit in. You must be honest with yourself. Don’t let someone discourage you, but you have to be honest with yourself first. The second reason was I got “taken” by a “manager” for several thousand dollars, and it really hurt me because the information that she gave me was information I could have found out on my own. So I came up with my own conclusion. I could still be apart of the fashion industry, but doing something I was better equipped to do, but I just don’t want to be a model. So I stopped modeling, started producing and representing plus-size [models]. And I didn’t start with just plus-sizes, I just produced regular fashion shows.

Alyssa Manners- You also produced Full-Figure Fashion Week (FFFW). What was the final push that told you, ‘Ok, I need to do this”?

Gwen Devoe- I actually came up with the concept four years ago. The issue was trying to get sponsorship. Everyone I spoke with was like, ‘Yea, this is a great idea,” but no one was willing to take the chance to do it. I wanted it to rival ‘Seventh on Sixth.’ I wanted it to be just like a regular Fashion Week, not a booty show or just a local show. I wanted it to be huge! But with that, comes money, and no one was willing to back me. So I had to save for it and put out my own money. And that’s exactly what I did. Two years before [the launch of FFFW], I got two major sponsors. But the ceiling fell, and we were on the verge of going into a recession, and they pulled out. So here I am with the concept, everything ready with no money. So I held off for a year, saved up my money, until some people were willing to aid in the cause, and gain sponsoring.

Alyssa Manners- How did you finally get organizations to sponsor you?

Gwen Devoe- People would just go to my website, and fill out sponsorship packages. There are steps and stages to everything I do. People are so quick to judge and criticize. Like, “Oh it should’ve been this or that way.” It was EXACTLY how it should’ve been for the launch. But you watch! 2010, they aren’t ready! I’m comfortable now, and I know that the concept is ripe and it should be done well. The issue is how many people are willing to invest and make it happen in a big way? And unfortunately, I realizing that for this year, I am going to have to go far beyond the limits of the plus industry to get adequate sponsorship. There are so many businesses in the plus industry that are suffering. They don’t always have the resources to invest in something a major as this.

Alyssa Manners- And what can FFFW offer the “big ticket” sponsors?

Gwen Devoe- The fact that you and I, as thick women already know, plus-size women are loyal. A woman like me, five feet, eleven inches, wearing between a size 16 and 18 depending on the cut. When we go shopping, we know our brands, we know what works for us, and we become patrons of those brands. So if I can get businesses that want to offer services to the full-figured community, I think that would be a great opportunity to show them that these consumers are loyal and your brand will do well.

Alyssa Manners- What are your favorite plus-size lines and designers?

Gwen Devoe- I don’t have any, isn’t that sad? In terms of shopping, since I use to model, I still have clothes with tags on them. My style is classic with a little funk. Honey, I’ll throw on a piece that’s ten years old, and you’ll think it’s so fresh. No, it’s just been hanging out in my closet. Special occasion clothing, I have designers that I’ve worked with for a long time, and I’ll go to them, and get something custom made. Stores like Lane Bryant, sorry not feeling you ever! Ashley Stewart, Torrid, Fashion to Figure, they’re doing the best that they can. But I want to talk to the people who are designing the pieces, and one thing to the credit of Ashley Stewart is that they’re working hard. The actually debuted they Fall 2009 Collection at FFFW, and their stuff was amazing! Now you see all these women with liquid leggings and Ashley Stewart deserves the credit for bringing that to us.

Alyssa Manners- How do you feel about mainstream, typically skinnier sized stores like, Forever 21, and their “Faith 21” Lines that cater to plus-size women?

Gwen Devoe- I think it’s a plus, and I can tell you straight out of the gate that I’ve heard some things about it in regard to the fashions not being as “fashionable” as the regular store. One thing I’m sorry to see in terms of the consumers is that we have b*&@h-ed, moaned, and complained so much that it’s become almost impossible to please us. I just wish we were more accepting. And there are some who are like, ‘I’m not going to be grateful for things I don’t like.” And ok, I understand that, but I still feel when you have a store like Forever 21 who is acknowledging that they need to open the parameters up, in the end, it just makes good business sense. I don’t understand. I just think that, going back to your article, we’ve complained so much that opportunities are arising where we have more fashion choices, that now we’re becoming picky. And that’s good, but we have to become careful because it could go back to the way things were, and we all know we don’t want that. We need to be gracious and not as complaining. What appeals to one person, may not appeal to another, and that’s okay.

Alyssa Manners- Will there ever be a place for plus-size women on the haute couture runways?

Gwen Devoe- Most definitely! Are you kidding me?! (chuckles) Definitely, but again, what are we talking about here? Are we talking about fashion shows or real life? Can we get just a few stores [to start with] that we can walk into, NOT GO ONLINE, and find, for example, ten stores that carry a simple black dress in our sizes? After we start with that, how about a business suit? A party dress? A nice pair of jeans? We have time for couture. My job is to provide additional fashion choices for the real, street fashionistas. The couture divas are a little bit later. I wish we could go to the stores, go through a sea of racks, and say, ‘Oh, I come back later.’ We don’t do that! We’ve got to get our stuff right now, then pay an additional 20 to 25 dollars in alterations. That’s how we do it.

Alyssa Manners- So aside from FFFW, I know you also manage models and run a bootcamp.

Gwen Devoe- I only manage a select group of models because honestly, models don’t need managers. I am currently managing these eight models because during FFW I wanted to marry aspiring models who were struggling with agency-contracted models to prove there was no disparity between the two, and prove that these aspiring models had the talent to be hired as agency models as well. So I told them that if they worked with me, and listened to what I told them, that within a year they could be in my show, and get paid the same rate as the agency girls. But that’s not really what I do. Again, models don’t need managers, they need a great booking agent that has your best interests at heart.

Alyssa Manners- What’s your bootcamp consist of? How do you become involved in the bootcamp?

Gwen Devoe- Well the “Ready To Runway” workshop is a bootcamp that was founded through my Plus Academy. The Plus Academy is a full service training program for aspiring plus-size models and young women. Because we’re based in New York, we kept having people email and contacting us from other parts of the country who wanted to be apart of “The Plus Academy.” So we developed “Ready To Runway,” which is a four hour “how-to” training program with notable plus-size model trainers in the industry. We also created “Project Curves,” a day-long workshop that is a condensed version of what we provide in the Plus Academy. We talk to you about what it takes to be in the industry, and they are looking for right now. Cause honey, we always have our finger on the pulse of this business. That’s the key to a successful; knowing exactly what’s going on and now, and more importantly what’s to come.

Glamour To Feature More “Real-Size” Models

Tired of all the hype of R&B’s superstars? Do you love real music? Wish for the old days when singers didn’t need 808′s and Heartbreaks, and could sing identical to their records?

Enter Ms. K.Michelle. The no non-sense, hard-hitting, vocal powerhouse reigning from Memphis, TN, has been killing R.Kelly fans as she tours the country with R&B King himself, owning her place among the select few singers who can, well, actually sing. Take a look at HB’s, Alyssa Manners, as the singer, songwriter, and in our opinion superhero, answers questions the same way she sings her songs: Honest, funny, and damn real.

AM: What made you want to be a singer?

K. Michelle: I just think it was something God put me here to do. It was a calling for me and I think, with everything I’ve been through, that He wants me to preach and talk to people through certain things. This is my calling.

AM: I went to your Myspace, and I read your description of your music, and each serves as very strong and declarative statements about your passion for music, and one really stuck out to me. You said you’re “the biggest advocate for being yourself.” What sets you apart from the rest of the R&B singers in the game right now?

K. Michelle: I feel a lot of R&B acts out right now are great, and I respect all of them highly, I just think I’m different. I call my music “honest music,” and I am the biggest advocate of being yourself regardless of what people say that you can’t do this or you can’t do that. You can’t say this or that. I’m just me, and I’m not afraid to go there with my music, and say things that other artists may not dare to say. I don’t shy away from controversy. I tell the truth, and what needs to be said.

AM: Do you think there are a lot of phonies in the industry? What would you say about the industry right now?

K. Michelle: I really don’t mess with the industry right now. I’m here to do what I’m here to do. I’m here to sing. You know, the whole “hoop” and “holler,” the gossip and all of that, I’m not with it. I am in the industry, but I’m not ‘of the industry.”

AM: Can you explain what’s the difference between the two?

K. Michelle: I’m in the industry because I have no other choice. This is the way I get my music out there, and I need it to get to the masses. So in order for me to get [my music] out there, I have to be in the industry. Being of the industry, people get caught up in the industry life. Caught up in the hype, caught up in not just the music, but the money, and being all about the fame. I’m not with that. I just love to sing, and to be able to have people tell me I helped them through the day.  I just love music. That’s me. So I’m in the industry because that’s my vessel to get to other people and help them. But I’m not of the industry because I’m not big on the hype of it.

AM: After listening to some of your songs, there’s this really strong message in each song, and each song is really different from one another. How would you say your music is different from everyone elses?

K. Michelle: It’s a breath of fresh air. There’s no gimmick behind it, it’s just whatever I felt that day or in that moment. I went in there and sang it. I brought in writers to write with me, but the songs that you hear aren’t songs that other people wrote for me or asked me to sing. It’s my actual writing, and I think that’s different.

AM: YES!!! Like the songs you have with Trina and Missy Elliott, “Fakin’ It.” It’s just so funny, and so real. It’s such a testament to all women. Do you think you’re music is specifically for women? How do you distinguish your music?

K. Michelle: I hate to leave out the guys, but I honestly feel like the situations in my life have made me women’s advocate basically. And I think it’s more for women and more healing for them. I feel like women are very strong creatures, but it doesn’t hurt to have someone to continually big them up. I want to big up my women. I want to tell them that, if no one tells you today, that you’re strong and you’re great. And my music is definitely for the ladies.

AM: So is that where you drew the the name of your album, “Pain Medicine” from?

K. Michelle: Yes it is. That title is so important to me because I wanted it to heal. I could never fully heal someone, but I can help their healing process begin because no one can heal you but yourself. I want my music, whether it’s a funny song, like “Self-Made” which is again just big-upping the women and it’s for the club. It’s funny, but it’s the truth. When you get to the core of the album, and how deep the album is, there are some real life issues on that album.

AM: And when can we expect the drop date for “Pain Medicine” so the ladies can bum rush the CD aisles?

K. Michelle: (Laughs) I don’t have one yet. The label is great at building my fanbase and introducing me. So the album will come out when I have a strong following, and I’m cool with that.

AM: And we’ve talked about the “healer songs,” but I know you also made it a point not to have any love songs on there since you’re not in love right now. Is every song based on reality?

K. Michelle: An experience. (laughs) I don’t want to say anything that I don’t mean. When you meet me, my feelings are written across my face, and I’m trying to work on that. If I’m not feeling you, you can really see it. I’m so emotional, and I’m so in touch with them that I can’t sing something that I’m not really happy with.

AM: Aside from the album, you’re on the R. Kelly Tour. How’s tour life treating you?

K. Michelle: AMAZING! Such a blessing, such a great performer. Like can you imagine growing up listening to somebody who had so many hits, and you meet them one day and he tells you, ‘you got next.’  If you focus, you can win. Then you go from that meeting to the night before the tour kick-off, and you get a phone call that you’re going to open up for him. That was amazing. And then while we’re on the tour, he comes up to you and is like ‘I heard you’re killing it every night, and I’m very proud of you.’ That is so amazing especially for that to come from him, and watching him every night, with all these people that love him so much that they follow him from city to city. I want that kind of following.

AM: What kind of tips has R. Kelly given you for the album?

K. Michelle: He told me, and I say it every night, as long as you write life and not music, I’ll always have a job. That was the best advice he gave me.

AM: Any love interests right now to spark some love songs?

K. Michelle: Oh honey I’ve been in love and fell out so many times. I’m so scared of love right now after my last relationship. It was awful. It was beyond awful. There wasn’t any cheating or anything like that, but I honestly went through a bad relationship where someone put there hands on me. That was my last situation. I don’t know, maybe God didn’t put me here to be with someone. Maybe He put me here to go through things and to show others what not to do. Maybe I’m a self-help pamphlet.

AM: How long ago did this happen?

K. Michelle: This actually happened like four months ago. But I don’t take back anything that has happened to me, and I’m not going to cry about it. I accept the things that have happened to me, and keep it moving.

AM: You’re also a single mom, and I have to commend you for that. Are there influences from being a single mother that are on the album as well?

K. Michelle: Yes, just from being a fighter. My son gives me strength. Some things that I’ve been through, like what happened to me four months ago, but I still go through life and you would never know because I fight for him. And my music, and being a single mother, I take the energy he gives me, and I put it in my music. And I think my wounds heal quicker because of him.

AM: What can you tell women from this experience?

K. Michelle: Run like hell! The first signs of something, go. You know, we always ask God to give us signs, but when He sends us a billboard, we ignore it. When you get that sign, you need to hit the road. And you need to love yourself before you can love anyone else.

Sometimes I wonder about mankind. We’re suppose to be born with common sense, but like my mother always says, “common sense isn’t so common.”

As is the case with 24-year-old Texan, Trista Joy Lathern.

Lathern lied to friends and family to make them believe she had breast cancer, and raised a hefty $10,000 at a benefit for it. What was the money really for? She wanted to get breast implants!

The reason? To save her dying seven-month marriage.

Not only did Lathern lie about using to the money for chemotherapy, but she also shaved her head in order to look like a cancer patient.

Lathern was arrested on Wednesday for lying to the police about her condition, taking the charity money and spending it on the surgery.

And while this was all for the sake of saving her family and marriage, her husband William has since filed for an annulment. According to the Waco Tribune-Herald, William Lathern claims Trista “induced him to get married ‘by fraud.’”

The annulment petition says that William was unaware of the fact his wife was cancer-free when they married or when the fundraiser was held.

Oh love, where would we be without it?

Are plus-size women finally be taken seriously?

It appears so!

In September, Glamour Magazine debuted a very provocative feature, “What Everyone But You Sees About Your Body,” which commented on self-image and how to gain respect for you body. It wasn’t the content that shook up Glamour readers, but the plus-size model they used for the spread.

20-year-old plus-size model Lizzie Miller changed the face of fashion by posing nude for the story, which received immense amounts of positive feedback. The reaction was so profound, that Glamour decided to follow up their plus-size love in their November issue, again having plus-size models pose nude in the name of confidence.

The love for “real-size” women has become so overwhelming that Glamour pledged to, moving forward, use more plus-size women in their issues than ever before:

“Enthusiastic support for any designer who manufactures chic clothes we can photograph on full-bodied models. Isn’t it time for changes like these? Reality, after all, is everywhere. On Twitter, Demi Moore tweets matter-of-factly about her body: “I still have excess skin & stretch marks!” And then, “Comes with having a few kids 4 some of us!” Scott Schuman, a.k.a. the Sartorialist, has attracted a cult following by photographing real people with great style — and quirks.”

Plus-Size Women Are Too Whiny!

And it looks like they’ll be keep their promises.  Glamour Editor Cindi Leive, discussed the December issue that has First Lady Obama as one of its five covers, and the steps taken to make sure “real” women are represented:

“We’ve shot stories for every issue from now through February using fabulous plus-size models, and not just in our feature shoots, but also in fashion and beauty,” she said. “One of the plus-size models who was featured in our original story is in one of our two major fashion features in December, and looks amazing,” she added. So going forward, the models are finally clothed, Leive told us. “It only seemed fair, much to my husband’s chagrin.”

We’ll see if Lieve and Glamour will keep their promises!

Complain, complain, complain. That’s all plus-size women do. It’s bad enough they want to share clubs with us, but they take up opportune shopping space in our stores and squeeze into the tightest seats on the bus. And aren’t there enough specialty stores, magazines, and even runways for them? They’ve got it all!

Will plus-size women ever stop complaining?

With all of the progression women of different sizes and shapes have made in the name of “self-confidence” and “self-love,” plus-size women have been stepping their game up and giving skinnier women a run for their money. Stores like Ashley Stewart and Manik Magazine cater to the “little more to love” crowd, and stores like Forever 21 have created lines like “Faith 21” with the size 12 and above in mind. But are they thankful? Of course not.

Why should people who are bigger have their own exclusive clothing and fashion shows instead of being of one accord with the general population?

Fat Acceptance Activists Push For Plus-Size Nightclubs

Why do you ask? Well, to put it simply, plus-size women are always the “butt” of jokes, (i.e., Mo’Nique, who uses jokes about herself as a defense mechanism), and don’t receive the same caliber of clothing, treatment, or respect as everyone else.

The average American woman is not a 6 or 8, but a 16! And yes, there are stores that satiate the “thicker than a snicker” fashionistas, they are so few and far between, that it’s hard to avoid looking like carbon copy. And the ratio of “big girl” stores to “slender” women’s boutiques are drastically low.

Yet stores insist on “dumbing down” styles like skinny jeans and leggings and slap the “plus-size” sticker across it and call it “plus-size fashion.” Think about the last time you went to store with a “plus-size” or “women’s” section. Notice how cute and fitted the “petite” section’s clothes are. How flattering and unique every garment is. Then step into the big girls’ area, typically all the way in the back of the store. The very store that carries the cutesy clothes for skinny women, offer bigger women “tent-inspired” garments with the nerve to make them in the same fabrics as the skinny stuff like they can’t tell the difference!

And there are no haute couture designers that make double digit sizes, except if they lines for H&M or Target. Otherwise, forget it!

In fact, people like Chanel designer Karl Lagerfield, insist that

“Fat mummies sit there in front of the television with their chip packets and say skinny models are ugly.”

Very hypocritical Karl! We remember when you were a happy meal away from a heart attack!

Plus, nothing shows off clothing better than the “real curves” of a woman.

So are plus-size women, bitch, moan, and complaining a little too much? Maybe, but until the playing field is leveled, might as well invest in some ear plugs ’cause the fight will continue to wage on!

A contestant on China’s “Go! Oriental Angel,” the China’s version of “American Idol,” has become the center of controversy when she was recently attacked on the blogging circuit after becoming one of the finalists on the show.

Lou Jing, a 20-year-old theater student from Shanghai, has big dreams of becoming a singer, loves fashion, and boys, and is just your normal, everyday beauty. She joined the ranks of other Chinese singers on the show back in August.

So what is it about this young woman that has Chinese bloggers going crazy?

Is it because her mother was having an affair with her father while she was married to another man? Nope, extra-marital affairs are no shocking tale in China. Is it because she got pregnant? Negative, children born out of affairs are as common as the affairs themselves.

Apparently, all the remarks are coming out of Jing’s mother having a “Bumble Bee” affair with an African-American  man while married to her “Shanghainese” husband. “Bumble Bee Love” is a term used to symbolize “intimate/romantic relationships between persons of Asian and African descent.” Lou’s father eventually left her mother pregnant, and was divorced from her husband after Lou was born.

Never to miss an opportunity to boost their ratings, the show’s producers played her biracial bloodline, causing a widespread debate about what it means to be “Chinese” if one parent is of African heritage.

According to ClutchMagazine, one of Hong Kong’s leading columnists and cultural commentators, Chip Tsao, believes that a child of a Chinese woman and a black person hits all the buttons that cause prejudice among Chinese. “It’s an obnoxious novelty,” he said, adding that Chinese prejudice against black people was part of “prejudice against people less well-off than themselves.”

“There was”, he said, “greater acceptance of Europeans because they were viewed as successful, but mixed Chinese/white European couples frequently attracted racist comment.”

One of China’s most popular blogs, “China Smack,” was one that condemned and criticized Lou’s mixed blood heritage (translated):

Lou Jing’s mother had a husband, then had an extramarital affair with a black man,

then gave birth to Lou Jing. and then after her birth divorced.

And that black devil, after f*%king ran back to his home in Africa.

It is unimaginable how that Shanghainese man [husband], excited and anxious to see his own “daughter,”

must have felt when he saw that she was black…

How absurd is it that one oppressed culture could be insistent and accepting of this behavior? At what point do we grow out of this racial behavior?

And why do so many people dislike Africans? What did we do to them?

WTF? “ANTM” Is The Latest Victim Of The Blackface Infection!

Swine flu isn’t the only virus to be worried about! Apparently, members of the fashion world have been infected with a case of “Blackface-itis” causing them to assume blackface is beautiful and artistic without the slight recognition of its historical context. A string of blackface incidences have been plaguing the pages of Vogue, as well as the CW’s “America’s Next Top Model” cycle 13 season as seen last night.

On the episode last night, the final six models had a photoshoot in a sugar cane field in Hawaii. Because Hawaii has a large “mixed-race” community (called hapa meaning “half”), the challenge of the photo shoot was for each model to take on two ethnicities even as far as to darken their skin.

Though this is not the first time Tyra has stepped outside of herself and created photo shoots in Blackface, but this one was by far the most extreme. And considering Tyra is a Black woman, there is something very disturbing about turning majority women into “minority-looking.” She even “blackened” the only black competitor up! Was she not “black enough?”

I remember once upon a time, when all a woman had to do was show a little cleavage to get attention. Then it was being a big booty cutie that was hot. The media has cashed in big time with reality shows like MTV’s “A Shot At Love” starring openly bisexual Tila Tequila, casting openly bisexual actresses as the lead of major movies (a la “Transformers” with Megan Fox), and turning tricks video vixens into professional models.

Then there are the select few that bisexuals as just plain “greedy” and “confused” about their sexual origin. Playing both sides of the fence is having your cake and eating it too.

What is it that is so damn hot about being bi? And where does that leave those who don’t fit into the “all or nothing” box?

The American Apparel model turned designer decided to step away from modeling to focus on the art of her accessories collection. The line, which currently is full of funky rings and things, highlights Kristen’s  “vision of art and design to the world”.
