In her last interview as the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama sat down with Oprah Winfrey for “First Lady Michelle Obama Says Farewell to the White House – An Oprah Winfrey Special” that will first air Dec. 19 on CBS, with an encore showing Dec. 21 on Oprah’s network OWN.
Ideally, the interview would be joyous. Two of the most intelligent, beautiful and captivating black women in the world in one room— waxing poetic about the first black first family’s two terms in the White House. But instead, the harsh reality of going into a new presidency with America’s most controversial, unqualified and contemptuous president in history, made the conversation sobering.
“Yes. I do,” she responded to Oprah asking her about the importance of President Barack Obama’s 2008 “Hope” campaign slogan.
“Because we feel the difference now. See, now we’re feeling what not having hope feels like. You know. Hope is necessary. It’s a necessary concept. And Barack didn’t just talk about hope because he thought it was a nice slogan to get votes. He and I, and so many believe: What else do you have if you don’t have hope? What can you give your kids if you can’t give them hope? Our children respond to crisis, the way they see us respond.”
The ladies also talk about the current divide in this country. “Color, wealth— these things that don’t matter still play too much of a role in how we see one another,” says Obama. “And it’s sad, because the thing that least defines us as people, is the color of our skin..”
We will definitely be watching to get more of FLOTUS thoughts on what her husband was able to accomplish and predictions for the future of this country.
