Get Well! Gabby Douglas Updates Fans After Health Scare
If you were worried when news of Gabby Douglas‘ hospitalization broke, you’re not alone. But stop worrying, she will be fine.
The three-time Olympic gold medalist recently updated her fans about her health, revealing on Instagram that she had surgery to remove a cyst in her mouth, a complication from a prior injury, the New York Daily News reported.
Sitting in a dentist chair, she wrote, “Got it removed and feeling much better now. Thanks for all your concerns and prayers and HUGE thank you to the doctors that have taken care of me these last four days!”

The 20-year-old still has to get her wisdom teeth pulled. But, because of her oral issues, Douglas missed out on joining her teammates, Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian, and Aly Raisman, in presenting a “Moonman” to Beyoncé during Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. Her health comes first, though.

Leaked 2015 Memo Told Dems: ‘Don’t Offer Support’ For Black Lives Matter Policy Positions
Democratic campaign officials advised House candidates to limit the number of Black Lives Matter activists at public events and promise no support for “concrete policy positions,” newly leaked documents say.
According to Politico, internal memos from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which were hacked by Guccifer 2.0, warned legislatures on how to be prepared when confronted by activists and how to avoid potentially embarrassing interactions.
“Be a partner and lead from behind,” reads the memo to DCCC staff, dated Nov. 19, 2015. “BLM activists don’t want their movement co-opted by the Democratic Party. They are leary [sic] of politicians who hijack their message to win campaigns.”
“If approached by BLM activists, campaign staff should offer to meet with local activists. Invited BLM attendees should be limited,” they later wrote.
In response, the group’s spokeswoman, Meredith Kelly, said, “The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee highly respects and values the leadership of the Black Lives Matter movement. In less than two years, BLM has evolved from three words into a political force that is changing and waking our nation. At the DCCC, we highly encourage our candidates to not only embrace the importance of this movement, but to meet with and listen to community activists to partner social change.”
Uh huh.
Well, BLM leaders definitely had something to say and released the following statement on their Facebook page:
“We are disappointed at the DCCC’s placating response to our demand to value all Black life. Black communities deserve to be heard, not handled. People are dying.
Whether Republican, Democrat or otherwise, our elected officials have an ethical and democratic responsibility to make legislation that reflects the needs of their constituents. That includes Black people facing life-threatening challenges because of racist, failed policies.
We demand, and are fighting every day for, a radical transformation of American democracy where all Black lives are valued. We expect that our elected officials will stop pacifying and take us seriously.
We encourage all policymakers and elected officials to read the Movement for Black Lives policy platform and commit to legislation in the first 100 days that ensures that #BlackLivesMatter.”
Yaaaaas! Elle Canada Pays Tribute To Black Natural Hair
Elle Canada has done something incredible for their September issue: They’ve included an entire spread dedicated to Black natural hair.
The “Natural Anthem” beauty shoot showcases six women of color rocking a collection of natural styles including Afro puffs, sculpted baby hair, and braids with the models hailing from Kenya, Burundi, and Canada, Clutch wrote. The article highlights the models favorite hair-care products, their day-to-day makeup routines, their own special relationship with their own hair and why this shoot mattered to them.
The magazine’s beauty director, Vanessa Craft, is thrilled that the publication could honor Black hair and beauty in this way.
“I have wanted to do a shoot like this for a long, long time — a visual love letter to the girls I grew up with and the women we all have become. Hair is such a hugely important part of our world and I wanted to celebrate it authentically. (P.S. I have worn every hairstyle in this shoot at some point in my life. Bantu knots is a personal fave). Shoutout to the amazing team who worked with us,” she wrote on her Instagram page.
The models echo Craft’s sentiments.
“It’s amazing. We are getting there; diversity is what we’re fighting for. [We need to do] more things like this,” Milly, one of the model’s, said.
“I’ve never been in a photo shoot where it’s all black people. Usually there is one black person and seven Caucasian women. We all come from different backgrounds and we can share stories together. And I kind of feel at peace because at other shoots, nobody would talk to each other,” another shared with the mag.
