Her new video, “Flip & Rewind” is an ode to the ’90s. Jones’ dresses as all three members of TLC as well as Mary J. Blige from her “Real Love” music video. She also pays homage to Boyz II Men, Keith Sweat, Brandy, Adina Howard, LL Cool J and Xscape.
On the inspiration behind the video that she co-directed, Jones told Rolling Stone, “[We were trying] to evoke the feeling of the Nineties, but not in a mocking way… It’s such an important time musically, emotionally and psychologically.”
She added, “Every part of us formed during the Nineties, and we took all of the quintessential R&B videos from the Nineties and did our best to recreate them.”
One of the comments on YouTube about the video questioned the purpose of the visuals, “I don’t know if this is suppose to be a joke or not but regardless I love this.”
The mid-tempo track almost feels like a cheesy “Saturday Night Live” sketch. While the costumes were pretty authentic, we expected the daughter of a living legend to have a more powerful presence. But with nearly half a million views on the video, we’re sure Jones’ will exceed our expectations on the next go around.
Check out “Flip & Rewind” which also includes cameos from Jermaine Dupri, Tevin Campbell and Andre Harrell.
Beauties, is Rashida Jones’ new track a hit or a miss?
